Imagine unlocking your Android phone without tapping in a PIN or scanning your fingerprint—just because your smartwatch is nearby. A new feature spotted in development could make that a reality, offering a smoother and smarter security experience for Wear OS smartwatch users.

According to Android Authority, the latest beta version of Google Play Services (25.29.31) includes early code for an update to Identity Check, a security feature introduced in Android 15. Designed to prevent phone theft, Identity Check normally requires users to authenticate with biometrics or a password when outside trusted locations like home or work. But the new strings suggest your connected smartwatch may soon act as a kind of trust signal—a way for your phone to recognize you and skip extra authentication if your watch is close and unlocked.

While this might not remove the need for a PIN or fingerprint entirely, it could reduce how often you’re asked to verify your identity, making everyday use easier while maintaining a layer of security.
The feature is still under development, and it’s unclear when or if it will roll out publicly. However, it points to a growing effort to tighten the integration between Android phones and Wear OS-powered smartwatches. Whether you’re using a Galaxy Watch or a Pixel Watch, this kind of update could make the Android ecosystem feel a lot more cohesive and user-friendly.
For now, we’ll have to wait and see if Identity Check with smartwatch integration makes it to a future release. But if it does, it could be a subtle but meaningful shift in how Android balances convenience and security—just don’t lose your phone and watch at the same time.
