The cyberdeck scene is full of unusual builds, but one recent project has caught attention for keeping things surprisingly practical. A modder going by “High Tech \\ Low Life” has created a clamshell cyberdeck that turns a regular smartphone into a compact, all-in-one workstation.

Shared on Reddit, the build isn’t a standalone computer. Instead, it’s a custom-made case designed to wrap around a phone and add the things phones usually lack: real speakers, a physical keyboard, extra ports, and better ergonomics. The creator summed it up simply: “This took a while to build, but it has a lot of features.”
The design takes cues from the Atari Portfolio, the early palmtop computer that famously appeared in Terminator 2. It opens flat to 180 degrees, giving it a small laptop-like feel. Old ThinkPad hinges were repurposed for durability, while custom mounts—modeled in Fusion 360—hold the phone in place using magnets, making it easy to swap devices.
Audio is one of the standout features. The cyberdeck packs dual 5W stereo speakers, connected to a Bluetooth amplifier. According to the builder, the volume and clarity are far beyond what a phone can deliver on its own, making it usable for movies, music, or casual media work.
Input comes from a compact “tactical” keyboard with an integrated touchpad, allowing full navigation without touching the phone’s screen. Power is handled by a 10,000mAh battery pack, and a built-in USB-C hub adds flexibility for accessories.
There are also thoughtful extras. Flip-out feet help stabilize the device on uneven surfaces, and a side-mounted handle makes it easier to carry around.
In a YouTube breakdown, the modder described the goal as combining a computer, keyboard, speaker system, hub, and battery into one portable unit. The project highlights what cyberdecks are really about: personalization, function, and experimentation—no single-board computer required.
