Meta is starting to push deeper into paid subscriptions across its apps, introducing new “Plus” plans for Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp as the company looks beyond its traditional ad-driven business model.

The new subscriptions are priced at $3.99 per month for Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus, while WhatsApp Plus starts slightly lower at $2.99 monthly. After quietly testing the plans in select regions earlier this year, Meta is now beginning a broader rollout.
For Instagram and Facebook, most of the extra features revolve around Stories and profile customization. Subscribers can reportedly keep Stories visible for longer than the usual 24-hour limit, access more detailed viewer analytics, react with exclusive “Super Hearts,” and even view Stories anonymously in some cases. There are also options for posting content without heavily pushing it into followers’ feeds.
WhatsApp Plus takes a slightly different approach. The paid tier focuses more on personalization, adding things like custom themes, extra stickers, exclusive notification sounds, and additional pinned chats.
Importantly, Meta is not locking core features behind a paywall. The free versions of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp are all staying as they are. These subscriptions are more about extra tools and customization for users who spend a lot of time inside the apps.
The company also plans to group these new services under a broader “Meta One” subscription strategy, which is also expected to include paid AI features, creator tools, and business-focused plans in the future. Meta has already been testing premium AI capabilities with usage limits tied to higher-priced subscriptions.
The timing makes sense. Meta is investing heavily in AI infrastructure right now, and relying almost entirely on advertising revenue has become increasingly difficult as operating costs continue climbing. Paid subscriptions give the company another revenue stream while also helping it compete with platforms that already offer premium memberships and creator-focused tools.
Whether regular users will actually pay monthly fees for extra Story controls and app customization is another question entirely. But after years of keeping its apps almost completely free outside of ads, Meta does seem serious about building a larger subscription ecosystem this time around.
