Apple has bumped up the prices on a bunch of current iPhone models right after launching its newest ones, which is the opposite of what smartphone brands usually do.
The increases hit the iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone Air, and iPhone 16. Each one is now $100 more expensive than it was before. In the US, that puts the base iPhone 17 at $899, the iPhone 17e at $699, the iPhone Air at $1,099, and the 128GB iPhone 16 at $799. The new prices are rolling out everywhere these models are still being sold.
This is unusual because Apple typically drops the price of last year’s phones once the fresh ones arrive. The current hikes are being tied to an ongoing shortage of memory chips, driven by heavy demand from AI data centers. Apple has already done similar price increases on other products like Macs, iPads, and HomePods because of the same rising component costs.
In India the new starting prices are ₹99,900 for the iPhone 17, ₹1,49,900 for the iPhone Air, ₹79,900 for the iPhone 17e, and ₹89,900 for the iPhone 16. The changes came after Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro series and the new foldable iPhone Duo, at which point it also pulled the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max from its direct lineup.
The timing shows how tightly supply-chain issues are still squeezing consumer prices, even on phones that have been out for a while. Carrier deals and trade-in offers might still soften the blow for some buyers, but the official list prices going up is a clear break from Apple’s usual playbook and a sign that component costs continue to ripple through the whole smartphone market.
