This week, Apple announced financial results for its fiscal Q4 2026 ended on September 26, 2026, and the results were surprising. The company reported a total revenue of $114.5 billion for a September quarter — up 12% year on year despite persistent supply constraints.
iPhone revenue accounted for $57.58 billion during the period — the best September quarter in iPhone sales ever. That figure becomes even more striking when you look at how few new devices were actually on sale compared to last year’s launch cycle.
During fiscal Q4 2025, four new iPhones went up for sale: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. However, 2026’s September quarter had just two new iPhones: iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The iPhone Duo was also announced at the same time, but pre-order wasn’t live until October, so none of this revenue was included in the September 2026 quarter.
This year, Apple took a different approach by not launching the base iPhone 18. That will likely happen early next year. The company hasn’t stated why, but it doesn’t take a lot to guess the culprit: component shortages. Apple likely wanted to ensure that it had enough of the Pro units to fulfill the demand.

Even without the base model, the revenue from iPhones actually went up strongly. As 9to5Mac’s Ben Lovejoy pointed out, this unusual release timing likely steered buyer behavior in Apple’s favor.
Most iPhone buyers typically upgrade to a new model every one, two, or three years, and that phase begins with September. Without a base model on shelves, many prospective buyers may have simply upsold themselves to the Pro tier rather than waiting months for the base iPhone 18.
Of course, there were other factors at play in driving September 2026 quarterly revenue to an all-time-high. The incredibly popular iPhone 17 continued to move in volume, and the $100 price hike for the iPhone 18 Pro models has also played a key role.
Overall, the split launch strategy for the iPhone 18 lineup has proved to be successful so far. It may soften some demand for the base iPhone 18 when it arrives next year, but Apple won’t lose sleep over more customers switching to the Pro model.
