MediaTek is gearing up to compete with Qualcomm in the high-performance chipset market with the Dimensity 9500. Following a recent leak about the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, new details have emerged about MediaTek’s plans for next-generation smartphones.

As per details shared by Digital Chat Station, the Dimensity 9500 features a 2+6 CPU configuration, replacing the all-big-core architecture of its predecessors. It includes two Cortex-X930 “Travis” cores and six Cortex-A730 “Gelas” cores. This design mirrors Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite, focusing on a balance between performance and efficiency.

The chip’s prime cores are expected to reach a clock speed of 4GHz, a 10% increase over the Dimensity 9400’s 3.62GHz. As for the GPU, the Dimensity 9500, built on TSMC’s N3P 3nm process, will emphasize better power efficiency and thermal management. It will include ARM’s Scalable Matrix Extension (SME) to boost multi-threaded performance, making it ideal for AI and gaming applications.

The Dimensity 9500 is expected to launch in mid-2025, well ahead of its Qualcomm rival, with the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 reportedly set for release in October 2024. Whether the improved performance of the Dimensity 9500 will come at a higher price remains uncertain. The Dimensity 9400 is approximately 19% cheaper than the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor. With reports suggesting the 8 Elite 2 could be even pricier than its predecessor, MediaTek has an opportunity to attract new customers if it can keep the Dimensity 9500’s pricing competitive.
