Lenovo has launched a hyper-focused, stripped-down mobile device called AI Student Phone in China aimed squarely at students and their parents. It is priced at just 299 yuan (roughly $44) and ditches games, web browsers, and social media entirely in favor of AI-assisted learning, location tracking, and strict parental controls.

Lenovo AI Student Phone Specifications

From a hardware perspective, it resembles a feature phone rather than a traditional smartphone. It has a small 1.83-inch touchscreen protected by impact-resistant Panda glass and supports handwriting input. Inside, it runs on a 1,850mAh battery and connects to standard 4G networks. It doesn’t require a special IoT SIM card, making it relatively easy to set up for standard voice and HD video calls.

The software is intentionally limited. The main feature is a physical AI button that activates a voice assistant. Kids can hold the button to ask general knowledge questions or get help with their homework. The phone also comes preloaded with an educational library covering math formulas and English vocabulary. The goal is to provide a reference tool for schoolwork without giving kids open access to the wider internet.

For parents, the device functions as a comprehensive tracking tool. It uses GPS for real-time location monitoring and supports geofencing, which sends an alert to a parent’s phone if the child leaves or enters a specific area, like a school or neighborhood.

Through a companion app, parents can manage the phone remotely. They can block unknown callers, schedule when the phone turns on and off, and activate a classroom mode. When this mode is turned on during school hours, the phone is restricted to just showing the time and making emergency SOS calls.

Lenovo also included a QR code-based mobile payment system. Kids can use the phone to buy things in stores, while parents can set spending limits and monitor transactions through the app to make sure the feature is used responsibly.

The phone comes with a detachable lanyard for convenient carrying and is available in orange-white, pink, and blue color options.

In related news, Lenovo has recently refreshed its GeekPro desktop with an Intel Core i7-14700F, Nvidia RTX 5060 Ti, and 24GB of DDR5 memory. The company also recently launched an affordable full-size gaming keyboard with RGB lighting.
