HMD has launched the HMD Touch AI in China, a tiny, purposeful device that mixes classic Nokia Lumia vibes with some useful AI tools, all for a very reasonable price.
The phone clearly takes inspiration from the old Nokia Lumia series. It has that distinctive circular camera housing on the back and comes in a bright cyan color. You can also buy separate back cases in yellow, blue, and white if you want to switch things up.
It’s very similar to the HMD Touch 4G that launched in India last October, but this China version adds AI features tailored for the local market.
You’re looking at a compact 3.2-inch touchscreen, 2MP cameras on both sides, and a 1,950mAh battery that charges over USB-C. It supports dual-SIM 4G, Wi-Fi, and can even act as a hotspot, making it more useful than your typical basic feature phone.
There’s also a physical button on the top that you can customize. One handy option is turning it into a one-touch SOS button that quickly alerts your emergency contacts.
The real differentiator is the Doubao AI (from ByteDance). It can do Chinese-English translation, generate images from text, recognize and reorganize objects in photos, and help with studying. The phone runs a clean, distraction-free system with parental controls, which makes it a solid option for kids or anyone who needs a digital detox. Alipay support is also built in for easy payments.
It’s currently available for pre-order in China at 469 yuan (about $69). It’s clearly aimed at people who want something simple, safe, and selectively smart — without the cost or complexity of a full smartphone.
