Samsung is reportedly bringing the under-display camera back to its book-style foldables. A tipster on X says the company will unveil a device with the technology next year.

Interestingly, Samsung has included an under-display camera in its foldables since the Z Fold 3, but it switched to a punch-hole cutout on the Z Fold 7 and Z Fold 8 series. Now, just two years after making the switch, the brand is rumored to be bringing the feature back. The timing may be significant.

Apple recently launched the iPhone Duo with an inner selfie camera under the screen, and it seems Samsung wants to show it can do the same.

The tipster says the device will also get major internal changes. However, its thickness and overall design will reportedly remain largely unchanged, measuring 3.9mm when open and 7.9mm when closed.

Why Samsung walked away from it

The Galaxy Z Fold 3 launched in 2021 with an under-display camera, and every Fold model through the Galaxy Z Fold 6 kept it. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 switched to a regular punch-hole camera in 2025, likely to improve photo quality. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8 also kept the punch-hole design this year.

Apple’s version has not escaped the same problem. The iPhone Duo’s inner camera takes weaker photos than the outer one, which is why Apple specifically calls it a “FaceTime camera.”

That’s the trade-off for Samsung, too. An under-display camera gives the inner screen a cleaner look without a cutout, but selfie quality takes a hit. The report doesn’t say whether Samsung has found a way to address the problem.
