    Design

There is no challenge if we talk about the design: the OPPO Reno9 is the clear winner. Its design is very original, with incredibly narrow bezels around the display and a camera module reminiscent of the one found on the OPPO Reno8 series. With a thickness of just 7.2 mm, it is one of the thinnest phones out there, and it is also very lightweight as it weighs just 174 grams. There is definitely no way for its opponent to compete. The Redmi Note 12 Pro Speed Edition is thicker, lighter, and cheaper, it has a lower screen to body ratio as well. However, it is the only one with the IP53 certification making it dust resistant and splash resistant, so you should not underestimate its build quality.

    Display

The displays of these two phones are more or less at the same level and they are very good panels, even though they do not stand a chance against the displays found on the most expensive flagship phones. The OPPO Reno9 has an AMOLED panel with one billion colors, a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2412 pixels, a 120 Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ certification, a peak brightness of 950 nits, and an in-display fingerprint reader. The Redmi Note 12 Pro Speed Edition has a 6.67-inch OLED display with one billion colors, a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a 120 Hz refresh rate, Dolby Vision support, HDR10+ certification, and a peak brightness of 900 nits, but its fingerprint reader is side-mounted. Note that the Redmi Note 12 Pro Speed Edition has stereo speakers and an audio jack, while the OPPO Reno9 has a mono speaker and it lacks the audio jack.

    Specs & Software

The OPPO Reno9 has a more advanced hardware department, at least in its most expensive memory configuration. It is fueled by the Snapdragon 778G mobile platform by Qualcomm: an octa-core chipset built with a 6 nm production process. It is composed of a Cortex A78 CPU running at a max frequency of 2.4 GHz, three Cortex A78 CPUs running at 2.2 GHz, four Cortex A55 CPUs running at 1.9 GHz, and an Adreno 642L GPU. Alongside the chipset, in the most expensive configuration, there are 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of UFS 3.1 native storage. The Redmi Note 12 Pro Speed Edition offers the same chipset and the same RAM but with an inferior 256 GB UFS 2.2 native storage instead of 512 GB and UFS 3.1. These phones run Android 13 out of the box, with highly customized interfaces on top and two guaranteed major OS updates.

    Camera

The Redmi Note 12 Pro Speed Edition provides the best rear cameras: it has a triple rear camera composed of a 108 MP main sensor, an 8 MP ultrawide shooter, and a 2 MP macro lens. With the OPPO Reno9, you get a better selfie camera, with a resolution of 32 MP instead of just 16 MP.

    Battery

The Redmi Note 12 Pro Speed Edition is equipped with a bigger battery, so it is able to guarantee a longer battery life. The OPPO Reno9 has a smaller battery, but the charging technology has the same power as its rival: 67W fast charging.

    Price

The starting price of the OPPO Reno9 in the Chinese market roughly translates to $399/€368 (8/256 GB), while you need about $250/€230 in order to purchase the base variant of Redmi Note 12 Pro Speed Edition (6/128 GB). Which one would you pick?
