How Is Huawei Able to Survive Without Google

The US is a major player in the tech space, owning some of the biggest tech brands, such as Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple. It’s hard to imagine mobile devices without partnering with these brands, especially Google, but Huawei is doing it by breaking all the barriers. But how did they do it? You’ll learn everything about it in this post.

Huawei was one of the top three smartphone sellers worldwide in 2019. In fact, the company surpassed Apple’s sales in many quarterly results throughout 2018 and 2019. Huawei’s smartphone business was at its peak during this time, and then the US government gave a massive blow to this Chinese company – the restriction to work with any organisation operating in the United States.

In May 2019, the US government, led by President Donald Trump, announced that Huawei and several other Chinese companies were now on the “Entity List.” In other words, this means that new Huawei phones can no longer ship with Google-owned apps such as YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Drive. They can’t work with any other company operating in the country.

Huawei smartphone sales, after reaching record highs, experienced a sharp decline after the ban. The inability to preinstall Google-owned apps was a major blow, but restrictions on cutting-edge 5G technologies proved equally detrimental to their high-end devices.

The Rise of Huawei

Three months after the Entity List ban, Huawei publicly unveiled HarmonyOS at its inaugural developer conference in Dongguan on August 9, 2019. The company revealed that they had been working on it since 2012. Huawei didn’t position HarmonyOS as a mobile OS until September 2020, when they announced HarmonyOS 2.0.

HarmonyOS

In July 2021, the Huawei P50 series was unveiled as the first phones with HarmonyOS. This was a big success for the brand, but the phone didn’t have 5G support.

Huawei didn’t stop there and waited for US sanctions to end. Instead, it focused on building an in-house chip fabrication plant. On August 29, 2023, the company announced Kirin 9000S – Huawei’s first fully domestically fabricated chip with 5G support. This was Huawei’s answer to the US that it can develop chips on its own without Western support.

Huawei Mate 60 and Mate 60 Pro were the first phones to get the Kirin 9000S chip. These are flagship phones which have sold over 30 million units.

Huawei’s Software Growth

Although Huawei AppGallery has existed since 2011 in China, the rapid development began after the US ban to make it the best alternative to the Google Play Store. On March 1, 2021, Huawei AppGallery had over 530 million active users, which, in October 2022, jumped to 580 million.

Huawei AppGallery

During the HarmonyOS 3 event in July 2022, Huawei revealed that the HMS ecosystem had roughly 1.6 million global developers, which has now crossed 5.4 million.

HarmonyOS is not completely independent from Android. It still uses Android Open Source Project (AOSP) to some extent. To clarify, Huawei can still use AOSP since it’s open-source but it can’t use Google Mobile Services (GMS).

However, the Chinese giant is already working on the second phase of HarmonyOS development – HarmonyOS Next. It will be completely independent of the Android operating system. It won’t even allow sideloading Android apps, which is currently possible with HarmonyOS. It will force app developers to create HarmonyOS-specific versions.

Huawei’s Alternatives to Google Apps

Huawei has developed alternatives to Google apps, which has helped the company grow in the competitive smartphone market.

  • Google App: Huawei Assistant
  • Google Duo: Zoom, Skype
  • Google Photos: Huawei Gallery, Huawei Cloud
  • Gmail: Huawei’s Email app
  • Google Maps: Here We Go Maps
  • YouTube: use the YouTube website in a browser
  • Google Drive: Huawei Cloud, Deego
  • Google Chrome: Huawei Browser
  • Google Docs/Sheets/Slides: Microsoft Office
  • Google Play Store: Huawei AppGallery

In short, Huawei has done tremendous work building an in-house chip plant and HarmonyOS to survive the US ban and compete against American tech giants. HarmonyOS Next will be the next big move from Huawei, which will be interesting to compare with the Android OS.

Huawei has recently announced the Pura 70 series powered by the all-new Kirin 9010 chipset. Read more about it here.

Huawei’s new Kirin 9010 chip tested in real-life gaming, performs much better than expected with no overheating

Huawei‘s latest flagship smartphone, the Pura 70 Ultra with all-new Kirin 9010 SoC underwent thorough testing by reviewers at a Chinese publication. shedding light on the performance of its new chipset. The benchmarks reveal the Kirin 9010 is more of an incremental upgrade than a huge leap forward.

Huawei Kirin 9010

This isn’t entirely surprising considering the Kirin 9010 seems to be a polished version of the Kirin 9000S found in the Mate 60 series. It features a single 2.3GHz Taishan core, three 2.18GHz Taishan mid-cores, and four lower-clocked 1.55GHz Cortex-A510 cores, designed to handle less intensive tasks.

The core architecture is essentially similar to the Kirin 9000S of the Mate 60. The notable difference lies in Huawei’s adjustments to the clock speeds of the cores. Meanwhile, the graphics processing unit remains unchanged, sporting the same Mali-G78 GPU clocked at 750MHz.

Benchmarks

Starting with synthetic benchmarks, the AnTuTu score for the Pura 70 Ultra landed at 940,000 points. Whereas, in the GeekBench 6.2, the single-core scores reached 1,431 points, with multi-core scores reaching 4,430 points in a room temperature environment.

Enabling the phone’s performance mode resulted in minimal gains, pushing single-core scores to 1,440 and multi-core scores to 4,436. On paper, these scores are clearly better when compared to the Kirin 9000S.

ProcessorGeekbench Single-CoreGeekbench Multi-CoreAnTuTu Overall
Kirin 901014404436940,000
Kirin 9000s13504200700,000

Huawei has managed to achieve this even while lowering the clock speed of Kirin 9010’s high-performance core.

However, the GPU appears to be a sticking point, according to the report. 3DMark Wild Life EXTREME testing yielded scores of 1575 points at room temperature and 1577 points in cooling mode. It’s a limited improvement in graphical processing power.

Games

But the real-world testing shows that the phone can run popular games like Genshin Impact fairly well.

Running the game at the highest settings with 60fps locked and frame rate boosting features disabled, the Pura 70 Ultra managed an average frame rate of 60.2fps in a room-temperature environment.

The frame rate remained fairly stable at around 60fps for the first 10 minutes before dropping to a steady 55.7fps average over the remaining 15 minutes. The phone’s back cover reached a maximum temperature of 46.8 degrees Celsius during this test.

Another graphically demanding title, Honkai: Star Rail, pushed the Pura 70 Ultra further. Set to very high settings with 60fps locked, the phone averaged 53 frames per second over a 15-minute run.

While the frame rate dipped to around 50fps after the initial 4 minutes, it remained stable throughout the rest of the test. The back cover temperature climbed to a maximum of 49.6 degrees Celsius here.

Motorola Edge 50 Pro: 5 compelling reasons to choose this phone

Earlier this month, Motorola announced the Motorola Edge 50 Pro in India with a starting price of Rs 31,999 (~$380). This pricing allows the device to compete with some of the recent smartphones, such as the Realme 12 Pro+ 5G, Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G, iQOO Neo 9 Pro 5G, OPPO Reno 11 Pro 5G, Vivo V30 5G, Samsung Galaxy A35 5G, and so on. While some of these phones may beat the Edge 50 Pro in some areas, like the iQOO phone offering a better Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, the Edge 50 Pro packs some interesting specs that provide an “edge” over other devices. Here is a look at the five major highlights of the device.

1. Design

Motorola Edge 50 Pro
Motorola Edge 50 Pro

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro’s front features a curved-edge AMOLED display with slim bezels. For durability, the device features a metal frame and an IP68-rated chassis, which protects it from dust and water damage. It comes in three shades, such as Black Beauty, Moonlight Pearl, and Luxe Lavender. While black and lavender have silicone vegan leather back, the white variant sports a handmade design. While Motorola has not advertised it much, each color variant ships with color-matching case.

2. Pantone Validated Display

The 6.7-inch P-OLED curve-edge display of the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is the world’s first and only True Color display, validated by Pantone, claims the company. It ensures real-world, true-to-life colors with Pantone skin tone validation for a wide range of human skin tones. The screen supports a 1.5K resolution, a 144Hz refresh rate, 10-bit billion colors, a peak brightness of 2000nits and HDR10+ support. Additionally, the display incorporates SGS Eye Protection technology for comfortable extended use.

3. Versatile Camera Setup

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro has a versatile camera setup comprising an OIS-assisted 50-megapixel camera with an f/1.4 aperture. Complementing this primary camera is a 13-megapixel ultrawide, which doubles up as a macro camera. Additionally, a 10-megapixel telephoto camera brings support for 3x optical zoom and a 30X hybrid zoom. On the front, the Edge 50 Pro sports a 50-megapixel selfie camera with autofocus and an improved aperture of f/1.9. The front and rear cameras support 4K video recording.

For a better photography experience, the Edge 50 Pro incorporates a couple of intelligent camera features. The AI Photo Enhancement Engine enhances image quality with advanced dynamic range, finer details, software-based bokeh, and noise reduction, all without requiring any expertise from the user. By dynamically adjusting stabilization levels to compensate for movement while filming, AI Adaptive Stabilization ensures shake-free videos. Tilt Shift Mode enables creative portraits with multiple points of focus, while Intelligent Auto Focus Tracking keeps subjects sharp and in focus, even as they move through the frame.

4. Blazing fast 125W charging

The Lenovo-owned company has confirmed that the Edge 50 Pro will receive Android 15, 16, and 17 upgrades, as well as three years of security patches. Apart from multiple apps from Google and a few Motorola apps, there are only a few third-party apps.

The new software packs Moto Gestures for controlling the device without touching the screen, Thickhead security, Moto Connect for wirelessly connecting the phone to a TV or PC for work or play, and AI-generated wallpapers.

Unlike Huawei Pura 70 Pro models, the standard Pura 70 doesn’t support Huawei NearLink

Huawei Pura 70 series phones arrived on the market yesterday and are seeing a high demand. Just like the Huawei Mate 60 series, all the models of the new phones also match “the level of 5G”. However, the Pro models such as the Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Pro+, and the Pura 70 Ultra have one networking feature as compared to the standard Pura 70. This is Huawei NearLink, a relatively new wireless technology, noted as “far ahead of Bluetooth”.

Huawei Pura 70 Ultra

Huawei NearLink integrates the advantages of both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

Last year, Huawei launched a new generation of NearLink technology, which integrates the advantages of both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and offers significantly stronger and also more efficient connectivity. It works with a set of HarmonyOS powered devices.

Compared with traditional wireless connections, Huawei NearLink has the advantages of 60% lower power consumption, 6 times higher speed, 1/30 delay, and 10 times higher number of network connections.

Huawei’s official website shows that currently Huawei Mate 60 series, Huawei Pocket 2, Pura 70 Pro, Pura 70 Pro+, and Pura 70 Ultra support this NearLink function. So the standard Pura 70 does not have the connectivity advantage here.

While answering some questions, Huawei terminal customer service also confirmed that the Huawei Pura 70 standard version mobile phone does not support this advanced connectivity feature. “HUAWEI Pura 70 does not support Star Flash; HUAWEI Pura 70 Pro, Huawei Pura 70 Pro+, and HUAWEI Pura 70 Ultra support Star Flash,” (translated from Chinese).

The standard Huawei Pura 70 is said to be powered by the Kirin 9000S1, an underclocked version of the existing Kirin 9000S chipset. Other than that, the phone offers a 6.6-inch 2760 × 1256 pixel OLED screen, which supports a 1-120Hz LTPO adaptive refresh rate. The phone has a total of three rear cameras. These include a 50MP main camera, a 12MP periscope telephoto with 5x optical zoom (both have OIS), and a 13MP ultrawide. There is also a 13MP camera for selfies.

GC Daily: We go hands on with Huawei Pura, HMD has a ‘Boring’ phone

Yesterday, Huawei released its new Pura series lineup, and we had to rush to the stores to ensure that we got hold of a unit. After visiting 5 different stores, we managed to buy a Huawei Pura 70 Ultra for review.

The Ultra variant costs around $1400 in China, and it was officially sold out in a minute once it went on sale. The unit we got is the new color, featuring a leather like back cover with starburst patterns. The camera module is of course, the biggest selling point of the device, and is definitely a conversation starter.

One of the reasons why the module is so huge is because the main camera features a huge 1-inch sensor with retractable lens! Yes, you heard it right, the lens retracts according to need, and you also get variable aperture with this, making the Pura 70 Ultra one of the most advanced camera smartphones in the market right now.

Our initial hands on showed that the Kirin 9010 chip is a slightly upgraded version of the 9000s from last year. So no significant upgrades in that department. But overall, we like the device and you can watch our initial impressions and hands-on experience in this video.

Nothing announced the Ear and Ear (a) TWS earphones in the global markets yesterday. The Ear is a premium offering whereas the Ear (a) is a stripped-down affordable version, just like the Phone (2a).

It is worth adding that Nothing has changed its naming strategy by ditching the numbers on its new products. More details about the earbuds here.

We previously told you that the Xiaomi 14 Ultra used 5.5G technology to achieve 5 Gbps mobile data speeds. However, 5.5G was only available in limited commercial usage. In terms of design, the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro will have a curved-edge OLED panel on the front, a metal middle frame, and a glass back. What’s interesting is that the new leak claims that it will have a different rear design as compared to existing OnePlus flagships.

OnePlus Ace 3 Pro specifications (rumored)

DCS revealed that the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro will have a 1.5K resolution OLED panel. Under the hood, the device will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, 16 GB of RAM, 1 TB of storage, and a big battery. On the back, it will have a 50-megapixel primary snapper, but there’s no clarity on whether the camera setup will include a 2x telephoto camera. The primary lens could be the same IMX890 camera sensor that’s available on the OnePlus Ace 3 / 12R.

In a previous Weibo post, DCS claimed that the Ace 3 Pro may also have a 24 GB LPDDR5x RAM variant. Reports suggest that the device could include a 6,000mAh dual-cell battery capable of 100W fast charging.

Apple’s Upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Air might Feature a Mini-LED Display, Rumors State

It seems like Apple is all set to equip the upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Air with a significant display upgrade, according to display analyst Ross Young. This move brings the iPad Air closer to the high-end 12.9-inch iPad Pro in terms of display technology.

The current 10.9-inch iPad Air has an LCD panel

Currently, the standard 10.9-inch iPad Air uses a traditional LCD panel. The new model is expected to adopt Mini-LED technology, boasting increased brightness for HDR content, deeper blacks for improved contrast, and lower power consumption for enhanced battery life. This mirrors the technology currently used in Apple’s top-tier 12.9-inch iPad Pro models and MacBook Pro laptops.

Apple iPad lineup refresh 2024

Specific details on the 12.9-inch iPad Air’s display haven’t been confirmed, but it could potentially match the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro’s specs: a 2D backlight system with full-array local dimming zones, a resolution of 2732 x 2048 (264 ppi), support for ProMotion adaptive refresh rate technology, and a peak brightness of 1,600 nits for HDR content.

While the iPad Air gets a Mini-LED upgrade, rumors suggest Apple might be reserving the next-generation OLED display technology for the upcoming iPad Pro. These new iPad Pro models are also expected to be powered by the M3 chip and potentially accompanied by a new Apple Pencil 3.

Apple is reportedly planning a quiet launch for these new tablets, likely in the second week of May, without a dedicated press conference.
