Xiaomi has invested 10 billion yuan and 3,400 engineers into building its first electric car: Lei Jun

Xiaomi is setting its sights on the automotive industry, with plans to launch its first electric car in the first half of 2024. The company’s founder, Lei Jun, recently expressed his ambitious goals for the venture in an interview with Chinese state broadcaster CCTV.

“I came into the car building with an aim to win,” Lei said. He outlined two key principles guiding Xiaomi’s automotive ambitions: leveraging proven technologies from established carmakers and investing heavily in research and development.

Xiaomi isn’t taking a traditional approach to car building. Lei revealed that the company has dedicated over 10 times the resources typically invested in a first car model by a conventional automaker. This translates to a team of 3,400 engineers and an R&D budget exceeding 10 billion yuan (approximately $1.4 billion).

“We invested 3,400 engineers on the first model, and the whole R&D investment was more than RMB 10 billion. So we are making use of more than ten times the industry’s investment,” he said.

Despite his confidence, Lei acknowledges the challenges ahead. He expressed concern about potential production bottlenecks and long wait times, which could damage Xiaomi’s reputation if not managed effectively.

“I’m more worried that if everyone buys it, resulting in a long wait time, say one or two years, we’ll get a bad rap,” Lei said.

While the official unveiling of the car is still to come, some details have already been revealed. The model dubbed the SU7, is a sporty-looking four-door sedan that surpasses the size of both Tesla’s Model 3 and Nio’s ET5. It will be available with two battery options offering ranges of up to 800 kilometers on a single charge.

The electric car market is already crowded with established players and ambitious startups. Xiaomi’s success will depend on its ability to deliver a car that stands out in terms of performance, technology, and, perhaps most importantly, price.

Redmi Note 14 in works, tipped to rival the Realme 12 series

Redmi is set to launch the Redmi Note 13 series of smartphones globally on Jan. 4 India will be the first market outside China to receive the Note 13 lineup on that date. Subsequent releases are planned for other markets. As the global market prepares for the Note 13 series, a Chinese tipster has claimed that the brand is preparing to unveil the Note 14 series for the domestic market.

Realme 12 Pro vs Redmi Note 14 Pro likely to happen soon

Recent reports have revealed that Realme plans to unveil the Realme 12 series of smartphones in the first quarter of 2024. The Realme 12 lineup is likely to include multiple models, but the rumor mill hasn’t revealed significant details yet. However, reports have provided key details about the Realme 12 Pro series.

The Realme 12 Pro and 12 Pro+ are expected to feature the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset. Speculations suggest that the rear camera setup of the Realme 12 Pro will include a 32-megapixel Sony IMX709 telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom. The Realme 12 Pro+, on the other hand, is said to be equipped with a 64-megapixel OmniVision OV64B periscope telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.

According to a Chinese leaker, the Realme 12 series, particularly the Pro lineup, will face competition from the Redmi Note 14 series. The Redmi Note 13 series was unveiled in China in September, so the company will likely maintain a six-month gap before announcing the Redmi Note 14 lineup. This suggests that it could debut in the first quarter of 2024, possibly in February. The tipster claimed that the Note 14 series will have a curved-edge display, some flagship-level features, and the same price range as the Realme counterparts. The Note 14 series will also decentralize some of the camera features that are available on the company’s flagship smartphones.

Unfortunately, there is currently no information available about the Redmi Note 14 series’ specifications. With the rival brand aiming to introduce telephoto and periscope telephoto cameras on the 12 Pro series at a price of around 2,000 Yuan (~$280), it is possible that the Redmi Note 14 Pro could feature a telephoto camera, while the Note 14 Pro+ could have a periscope telephoto camera. It is too early to speculate on the specifications of the Note 14 lineup, so it is advisable to wait for further reports before making any assumptions.

Leaked information has already given us a sneak peek at the Pro and the standard Find X7. Now, tipster Digital Chat Station (DCS) has shared details about the camera specifications for all three models.

These models will also include dual-telephoto lenses, with one being a 50MP IMX890 periscope telephoto with 3X optical zoom and another 50MP periscope telephoto with 6X optical zoom. Recently, a schematic shared by tipster Ice Universe also showed us the arrangement of these dual-telephoto sensors on the Find X7 Pro.

So, this means both the Find X7 Pro and Find X7 Ultra will share similar camera specifications and are rumored to feature the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. Meanwhile, the standard model will get the Dimensity 9300. An exclusive feature for the Ultra model is likely to be the satellite connectivity feature, as suggested by DCS.

iQOO Watch, and iQOO TWS 1e are set to launch alongside the iQOO Neo 9 Series on 27th December in China

Following the debut of the iQOO 12 5G last month, the firm is now ready to introduce its next lineup of devices in China.

Recently, Vivo’s sub-brand iQOO has confirmed the launch of its next-gen iQOO Neo 9 Series. The Neo 9 Series will launch in China on the 27th of December, 2023.

Now, along with the Neo 9 Series, the brand has officially confirmed the release of two additional products—the iQOO Watch and iQOO TWS 1e. Previously, folks at 91mobiles shared a leak that revealed the design and first look of both products yesterday. The leaked design and the official poster appear to be very similar.

The official posters of the impending iQOO Watch have been released which confirms that the company is entering the smartwatch market.

It is the first time the firm has built a smartwatch. The poster of the smartwatch reveals a round or circular display with a functional crown and a button. However, the iQOO Watch appears to be a rebadged version of the Vivo Watch 3. The watch face could be the only obvious difference, however, there may be other color variations available for the iQOO edition.

Similar treatment is being given to the forthcoming iQOO TWS 1e, which, like most iQOO earbuds, will be built around Vivo’s TWS 3e. The poster of TWS 1e also confirms the color variants, the TWS 1e will be available in Black and White colors. Other features like the spatial audio, 11mm dynamic drivers, an amazing 9 hours of battery life with ANC turned on, and DeepX 3.0 technology, may remain unchanged.

You may watch the live event by heading to the official Weibo account of iQOO. The launch event will be held at 4:30 pm IST.

Redmi Note 13 and 13 Pro 4G renders specs and price revealed in new leak

Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi is gearing up to launch the Redmi Note 13 series smartphone in India on January 4. The lineup, launched in China, originally brings three smartphones, all in 5G flavors. However, we have been hearing about LTE variants for quite a while now.

Now, a new leak by Appuals confirms that Xiaomi will also be launching 4G models of the Redmi Note 13 and Note 13 Pro. However, the 4G duo will only be launched in Europe. The leak also gives us our best look at the two devices in high-quality renders alongside their specs and pricing.

Redmi Note 13 4G, Note 13 Pro 4G renders and specifications

Both the devices look similar from the front with a punch-hole. And they share similar specifications as well — a  6.67-inch AMOLED panel with 2400 x 1080 pixels resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and TUV Rheinland certification for protection against blue light.

For durability, the Note 13 comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, while the Pro model gets the more scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass 5. Both phones are IP54-rated, meaning they can withstand splashes of water.

Under the hood, the Redmi Note 13 4G packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 685 processor, while the Pro version gets a MediaTek Helio G99 Ultra chip, which could be a souped-up version of the Helio G99. Both processors are paired with LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.0 storage, and they’ll run on MIUI 14, based on Android 13.

As for the cameras, the Redmi Note 13 4G features a 108MP main sensor with an f/1.65 aperture, while the Pro model gets a 200MP main camera. Both cameras benefit from Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) for sharper photos and videos. They also share an 8MP wide-angle lens and a 2MP macro lens for capturing a variety of shots. For selfies, there’s a 16MP camera on both phones.

Moreover, the Redmi Note 13 duo packs a 5000mAh battery. However, the vanilla model supports 33W fast charging, while the Pro model gets faster 67W charging.

Interestingly, the Note 13 Pro also uses Xiaomi’s proprietary Surge G1 and Surge P1 chips for faster charging and better battery management. Xiaomi started using these SoCs with their flagship Xiaomi 12 series.

As for the price, the Redmi Note 13 4G will come in two configurations: 6GB+128GB for €199 and 8GB+256GB for €249. The Redmi Note 13 Pro 4G, on the other hand, will be available in 8GB+256GB and 12GB+512GB variants, priced at €349 and €399, respectively.
