Nokia X20 FCC certified, likely to launch on April 8

Last week, a report revealed the existence of a Nokia phone named the Nokia X20. Later, it was spotted at the Geekbench benchmarking platform. Today, the smartphone emerged in the database of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). It is speculated that HMD Global may announce the Nokia X20 smartphone through a launch event that is already set to take place on April 8.

The FCC documents reveal that the Nokia X20 (TA-1341 model number) smartphone measures 167mm diagonally, which indicates that it could be housing a display of around 6.2 inches. Since it is speculated to borrow its design from the Nokia 5.4, the handset may feature a punch-hole screen.

A schematic of the phone’s rear shell is also available in the FCC documents. It shows that the smartphone has a round-shaped camera housing. The handset does not feature a rear-facing fingerprint reader, which indicates that it could be incorporated with the power button. The FC listing has no other information on its specifications.

The Geekbench listing of the smartphone revealed that it will be equipped with Snapdragon 480 chipset, 6 GB of RAM, and Android 11 OS. The X20 is expected to offer users 128 GB of native storage, and it could be priced at 349 euros (~$412). The handset is likely to arrive in blue and sand colors.

The Nokia X10, which is expected to debut with X20 is also powered by the Snapdragon 480 chip and 6 GB of RAM. It could be priced at 299 euros (~$353) and it may come in white and green colors.

The new Samsung Galaxy S20 FE variant will be limited to 4G: NBTC

Last year, Samsung launched the Galaxy S20 FE as a toned-down version of the Galaxy S20 series. This device comes in both 4G and 5G variants. Earlier this month, a new version of this smartphone appeared on WiFi Alliance. Now, this handset has been certified by yet another bureau.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE Cloud Navy

A few days back, a new Samsung Galaxy S20 FE model was certified by WiFi Alliance. According to the agency, this smartphone will come with three model numbers – SM-G780G, SM-G780G/DS, and SM-G780G/DSM,

Going by their model numbers, this phone will have dual-SIM support. Further, the certifications also revealed that this handset will debut with Android 11 (One UI 3.x) out of the box.

Furthermore, the device’s newly spotted NBTC certification confirms it to be a 4G smartphone. Hence, we can expect Samsung to launch this phone in the countries where 5G deployment is still a work in progress.

That said, nothing else is known about this new Galaxy S20 FE apart from the above-mentioned specifics. But we can speculate it to feature a similar design and specs but with a new SoC due to chip shortage.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S20 FE variant? Do let us know in the comment section below.

Samsung Display flexible AMOLED panels sees growth in China: Report

The flexible AMOLED panels made by Samsung Display have seen a rise in sales in China in the first quarter of this year, marking an increased penetration rate in the high end segments in the region over last year.

Samsung 90Hz OLED Display for Laptop

According to a DigiTimes report, Chinese smartphone makers like Huawei, Honor, and ZTE have opted to use flexible AMOLED panels made by local display manufacturers, meanwhile, other local handset vendors like Xiaomi and Vivo are also using locally produced AMOLED displays for their mid tier models. The South Korean tech giant recently launched its E4 AMOLED panel, which arrives with an improved brightness of 1,500 nits over 1,200 nits from the previous generation.

This model is also capable of reaching a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1, which allows the display maker to continue growing in the Chinese market. Furthermore, the company has also lowered the prices of its rigid AMOLED panels that are now more affordable than the ones made from local Chinese vendors’ LTPS TFT LCD displays. Interestingly, Honor has launched the V40 series, which is its first smartphone since it was sold by its parent company Huawei.

Samsung

The Honor V40 features AMOLED panels made by BOE Technology and Visionox. Similarly, ZTE has also been supplying its AMOLED panels made by Visionox since 2017. Additionally, Xiaomi has also purchased flexible AMOLED displays from CSOT (China Star Optoelectronics Technology) on its Mi 10s model, along with E4 AMOLED panels from Samsung Display.

OnePlus and OPPO have been getting closer with their relationship and a majority of their shares are already owned by a common OPlus(Oujia Holding Limited). Earlier this year, they merged their R&D department with each other but iterated that uniqueness in software will continue.

Just a few months later, they u-turned and officially announced the transition from HydrogenOS to ColorOS in China. Anyway, at the event, OnePlus said that the following devices can be upgraded to the ColorOS 11.2 via update:

That said, OnePlus said that till they receive this, it will continue to keep the HydrogenOS updated. However, it hasn’t specified a specific rollout timeline yet so we will have to wait for the official word.

OnePlus recently released a flashable ColorOS beta build for the OnePlus 8 users so I guess it might get the stable update sooner than others.

Apple Glass may feature holograms to create 3D virtual objects

The long rumored Apple Glass might arrive with holograms to offer 3D objects in a virtual environment. This technology will be used to make the virtual objects seem more natural.

Apple

According an AppleInsider report, the Cupertino based giant has filed another new patent for its upcoming “Apple Glass.” In the patent, it is clear that the company is looking into 3D way of displaying information to the wearer along with realistic audio effects as well. While the brand has filed for various patents over the last couple of months, the latest one places an emphasis for improving the 3D experience offered by the device.

As per the patent, the company aims to make the user feel “as if they were physically in that environment,” through the use of “Scene camera,” by UK-based inventors Richard J. Topliss and Michael David Simmonds. The patent further states that the “virtual reality systems may display stereoscopic scenes to users in order to create an illusion of depth, and a computer may adjust the scene content in real-time to provide the illusion of the user moving within the scene.”

Apple

It further adds that “When the user views images through a virtual reality system, the user may thus feel as if they are moving within the scenes from a first-person point of view.” The glasses capture the real world as seen by the user and then presents information based on the scene being observed in the real world. So when the user moves, the scene camera also changes to better adapt its 3D environment. Furthermore, a large part of the patent is also based around solving potential issues caused by having projectors and other devices mounted at the side of the glasses.

Apple patents a unique Apple Watch design, features Wrap Around Display

Apple has just patented a new design for a future Apple Watch, which features a unique wrap around flexible display. This means that the wearable would also arrive with a digitally customizable band.

Apple

According to a MacRumors report, the Cupertino based giant filed a new patent titled “Display Module and System Applications,” which was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. In this document, the company outlines the design for a unique flexible display that would span the entire length of the band of its smartwatch. This display would have to be flexible enough to contour to the shape of the users’ arm to fit like a regular watch’s band.

The iPhone maker also explained the design, which would include a display with a “plurality of interconnects” that extends “through the display substrate from the front surface to the back surface, and an array of LEDs are in the display area and electrically connected with the plurality of interconnects.” Furthermore, the wearable’s battery, processor, ambient light sensor, and other crucial components can be fixed with an enclosure on the rear of the large display panel.

Apple

The patent also points out that the OLED display might be sensitive to air and moisture degradation without a protective glass cover along with other “problematic” issues due to the use of “interconnects.” On the other hand, the design would enable the company to offer “minimized” bezels around the display for a more appealing design, or even possibly “eliminate” the bezel entirely. Unfortunately, it is unknown if the company is actually working on such a product or covering all bases.

Intel seeks to make ARM processors and 5G chips for Apple

Apple had made a major shift away from Intel and its processors for its Mac series of computers, in favor of its self designed ARM based chips. But despite losing Apple as a major customer, the chip maker is apparently planning on reentering the iPhone makers supply chain.

Intel

Rather than simply supply its Intel Core processors again, the company aims on getting Apple back through its new foundry business that is called Intel Foundry Services or IFS, as per a PhoneArena report. The IFS will be run by the company’s Senior Vice President Randhir Thakur and will compete with other tech giants like Apple, Google, Microsoft, and even Qualcomm. These four brands design their own chips but do not produce them and contract other firms like TSMC and Samsung.

Team Blue will be spending about 20 billion US Dollars to open two new fabs in Chandler, Arizona. Notably, the move from the company also arrives as the world suffers a major shortage of semiconductors, which has affected various companies and industries across the globe. The company’s CEO Pat Gelsinger stated that the foundry business will be a part of a market that is estimated to reach a 100 billion US Dollars in value by 2025.

Apple

Apple has relied on TSMC, the world’s largest contract chip maker, for its chips, so it will be difficult for Intel and the IFS to get some orders from the smartphone maker. At the moment, Intel uses a 10nm and 14nm process nodes for the chips it designs and manufactures. The company is also on track for 7nm chips during the second quarter of this year. While it already makes its own chips, the company also plans on increasing the use of third party chip makers like TSMC, Samsung and others.

Rooting the ColorOS-powered OnePlus 9 series will not void the 2-year warranty in China

OnePlus launched the OnePlus 9 series in China today. Unlike the global variants, the models sold in the home market run ColorOS 11 as confirmed by the company ahead of the official announcement. But they come with one exception that is not applicable to OPPO smartphones running the same software.

OnePlus 9 Series All Colors Featured

The OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro for China ship with ColorOS 11.2 based on Android 11. The brand calls it ColorOS for OnePlus, just like MIUI for POCO. This version of ColorOS comes with some tweaks like realme UI.

It is a known fact that OnePlus started its journey as an enthusiast brand. The company is known for its community. All of its products are popular in the custom ROM community, thanks to the firm’s commitment towards releasing proper kernel source code on time.

In fact, OnePlus even sends out its devices to potential developers for third-party software development. Similar to Xiaomi, the warranty of the company’s phones do not void on rooting.

Continuing its legacy, at the OnePlus 9 series China launch conference, the brand confirmed that users need not worry about their smartphone’s warranty on rooting though they now run ColorOS. OnePlus had to specifically clarify it since OPPO and realme (realme UI) handsets running the same OS do not have this exception.

Also, it is worth noting that the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro are not only cheaper in China but also come with a 2-year warranty. That said, do you think OnePlus should use ColorOS globally? Do let us know in the comment section below.

OnePlus 9 Pro flagship smartphone passes JerryRigEverything’s durability test

OnePlus recently launched its next-generation flagship lineup, the OnePlus 9 series and the top-end device in the series is the OnePlus 9 Pro. Soon after the announcement, JerryRigEverything shared a video showcasing the phone’s durability test.

To protect it from scratches, the phone comes with a screen protector pre-installed. After removing the film from the top, it started scratching from level 6 while deeper grooves started forming at level 7, which is pretty standard.

The device also comes with an optical in-display fingerprint sensor and even after scratching the screen at level 7, the sensor works fine without any issues, which is impressive but not surprising for a flagship device.

The OnePlus 9 Pro has a metal build and the buttons on the phone are also made up of metal, making the device more durable than the plastic body. Further, the phone is rated IP68, making it water and dust-resistant.

The highlight of the device is the camera module for which the company has partnered with Hasselblad this time. There are four sensors on the back, along with an LED flash, and it’s good to see that scratching the camera module doesn’t affect the phone.

The final test performed on the device was the bend test to check the phone’s durability. It was tested by trying to bend the smartphone both inwards and outways. The device survived both tests without any issues, not even a crack.

Apple to compensate Samsung Display over order shortfalls: Report

Apple is expected to offer compensation to Samsung Display, the former’s supplier of OLED panels, over a shortfall in orders for displays, as per industry sources close to the matter.

Apple

Previously, we had reported on Samsung Display’s shipments for the month of January 2021, which fell by 9 percent month on month to 45 million units. One of the primary reasons for this decline was the lackluster sales of the Cupertino based giant’s iPhone 12 mini. Due to this, Apple had adjusted its production of its iPhone 12 series, with overall production falling by about 20 percent in the first half of this year as iPhone 12 mini units being responsible for the majority of these cuts.

At the moment, the South Korean display maker is the company’s sole supplier of 5.4 inch OLED panels for the iPhone 12 minis, which is the smallest variant of the latest lineup. One source stated that “It is uncertain whether Apple would pay a penalty to Samsung Display, but considering its contract history and sluggish sales of the iPhone 12 mini, it is likely that Apple will compensate Samsung Display.”
