Apple AirPods Max shipping might get delayed up to 14 weeks for certain colors

Apple launched its first-ever over-the-ear wireless headphones, AirPods Max yesterday. It is already available for pre-order and Apple said that it will go on sale from December 15. However, it looks like the shipping will get delayed across regions.

Credit: Apple

As reported by 9to5Mac(via Gadgets360), Apple is showing a shipment period of up to 12-14 weeks for certain colors of AirPods Max. If you recall, AirPods Max comes in Space Gray, Sky Blue, Silver, Green, and Pink colorways. However, unlike the reports say, I looked upon Apple’s website and the details have changed for regions. You can look a the shipping estimate(at the time of writing this) for China, USA, UK, Australia, India below:

  • China
    • Space Gray, Sky Blue, Silver, Green- 12 to 14 weeks.
    • Pink – 5 to 6 weeks.
  • India
    • Space Gray, Sky Blue, Silver, Green- 12 to 14 weeks.
    • Pink- 2 to 3 weeks.
  • USA
    • All colors- 12 to 14 weeks.
  • UK
    • Space Gray, Sky Blue, Silver, Green- 12 to 14 weeks.
    • Pink- 3 weeks.
  • Australia
    • Space Gray – 4 to 5 weeks.
    • Sky Blue-  12 to 14 weeks.
    • Silver- 3 weeks.
    • Green- 5 to 6 weeks.
    • Pink – 5 to 6 weeks.

Do note that, except in India, other regions have Personal Engraving options like etching smileys to the headphones. Hence, their estimate might vary from this. That said, apart from Australia, where the shipping timeline is somewhat acceptable, other regions have it as high as 14 weeks. This means you might be able to get your favorite colors only by March 2021.

Apple has either failed to stock the wireless headphones well across regions due to COVID-19 or it has got overwhelming orders. Either way, Apple has placed the headphones in a premium segment with its pricing. You can take a look at the pricing below:

  • China- 4,399 yuan
  • India-₹59,900
  • USA-$549
  • UK- £549.00
  • Australia- A$899(AUD)

Also, do note that the shipping estimates mentioned above are subjected to change further according to stocks in respective regions. Nevertheless, if you are wishing to get your favorite color sooner, the only way is to hope for Apple to reduce the shipping time in your region.

AirPods Max has a unique knit mesh canopy for comfort, memory foam earcups, and stainless steel frame for strength. It has a 40mm dynamic driver, dual neodymium ring magnet motor for THD<1, H1 chip(like AirPods 2), and better software optimization. It has audio features like Adaptive EQ, ANC, Transparency Mode, Spatial Audio, 4xmicrophones.

Additionally, the wireless headphones have a battery life of up to 20hrs, support Apple’s one-tap setup, automatic pairing, wear detection, Siri, and more.

Google, OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi to launch foldable phones in 2021

The foldable smartphone market is going to get so much bigger next year if the latest report is true. So far, the key players in the foldable smartphone space have been Samsung, Motorola, Royole, and Huawei but a new leak says that more manufacturers including Google will be joining the list.

The info comes from Ross Young, the founder and lead analyst at Display Search and DSCC. In a tweet posted earlier today, he revealed that the second half of the coming year is going to be an exciting one for the foldable smartphone market. He said Samsung will announce at least three models, OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi will announce four models between them, and Google will also announce one model.

We already know Samsung will announce the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3 in the third quarter of the year from leaks from the past couple of weeks but Ross’s tweet says there will be at least three models. In the same tweet, he says there will be no Galaxy Z Fold Lite but there will be a Galaxy Z Flip Lite.

The Galaxy Z Fold Lite was reported to be scheduled for a Q1 2021 release but not only is it not launching in the first quarter but it won’t even launch at all according to Ross Young. We already heard of the lite version of the Galaxy Z Flip last month, so it is not a surprise.

Moving on from Samsung, the three big Chinese players, OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi will also launch their first foldable smartphones next year. What makes it even more exciting is that one of them will launch two models. Of all three, only Xiaomi has demonstrated a working prototype but all three of them have filed patents for various foldable smartphone designs. Recently, an OPPO patent revealed a phone with a design similar to that of the Galaxy Z Flip.

Xiaomi’s foldable prototype features a dual folding design

Google is also on the list of manufacturers announcing a foldable smartphone in 2021. More than a year ago, Google confirmed it was working on foldable smartphone prototypes and in August of this year, an internal document revealed that a foldable phone codenamed “passport” may be among the Pixel devices launching next year.

With all these devices lined up for launch, 2021 is going to be an exciting year for the foldable smartphone category and mobile tech in general

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G spotted running Android 11; will it be One UI 3.0 or 3.1?

Samsung Galaxy A52 is one of the company’s expected A-series of devices this year. A couple of days back a massive leak revealed the renders and specs of the device. Now, it appears on the HTML5 test page courtesy of the Sammobile report.

Galaxy A52 5G
Galaxy A52 renders by Onleaks

Accordingly, a Samsung device with model SM-A526B appears on the HTML5 test page. Now, if we recall, a device with a similar model number appeared on Geekbench. The device is likely to be a variant of Galaxy A52 considering Samsung’s pattern of model numbers in the past. That said, the test page shows that the device is tested on Android 11 suggesting that it will debut with the latest OS.

However, if you ask me if it would carry Samsung’s One UI 3.0, or the already in-works One UI 3.1, I will vote for the former. The reason being, Samsung has so far kept new iterations of it’s UI with the flagship launches. And considering the A52 5G is rumored to debut before the Galaxy S21 series, it is unlikely for it to have the One UI 3.1.

That said, these are our speculations, and hence, let’s wait for the official launch. Moving on, the report says that the device will also have an FHD+ display with a resolution of 2,400×1,080 pixels. If you recall, an earlier leak by @Onleaks revealed that Galaxy A52 5G will have a 6.5-inch display with an Infinity-O punch-hole at the center.

As mentioned above, the earlier benchmark indicates that it will feature a Snapdragon 750G SoC. If leaks are true, the device won’t differ much from the predecessor, Galaxy A51. And have a similar GLasstic back(with metallic frame), rectangular layout with quad-cameras, AMOLED display with in-display fingerprint sensor, and 3.5mm audio jack.

Other probable specs are a 64MP camera supplied by Samsung Electro-Mechanics, and a similar $499 price tag as the predecessor.

Earlier today, Redmi confirmed that it will launch the Redmi 9 Power in India on December 17. The teaser page on Xiaomi’s website teases the device’s power-packed battery, performance, display, camera, and more. While the device is likely a tweaked version of the Redmi Note 9 4G(China), tipster Ishan Agarwal shares an exclusive render of the device.

Redmi Note 9 4G
Redmi Note 9 4G

As reported by 91Mobiles, the tipster shares a rear image of the upcoming Redmi 9 Power. Accordingly, the image shows the rear panel of the Redmi 9 Power in Blue Color. As you can see below, the rectangular camera layout is similar to the Redmi Note 9 4G that launched in China last month.  However, it has an additional sensor, unlike the Chinese variant.

This is something we have already reported courtesy of FCC and Google Play Console listings. Consequently, the Redmi 9 Power and other versions(Redmi 9T) will have an additional 2MP macro sensor replacing the ‘AI’ logo on the Chinese variant.

Anyway, the rest of the render shows a ’48MP’, ‘SUPER QUAD CAMERA'(instead of TRIPLE) logo. Additionally, the device’s textured rear panel, LED Flashlight placement are similar to the Chinese variant. As for the rear camera specs, the device will have a 48MP main(wide), 8MP ultra-wide, two 2MP macro and depth sensors.

Redmi 9 Power Specifications

The extra sensor aside, the Redmi 9 Power will mostly be the same as the Note 9 4G in China. It will feature a 6.53-inch IPS LCD FHD+ display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 662 SoC, 4GB RAM, and 64/128GB storage.

Other specs will include an 8MP selfie shooter, 6,000mAh battery with 18W charging, MIUI 12 based on Android 10 out of the box. Also, the teaser page confirms that Redmi 9 Power will come in Orange, Black, Green colors apart from the Blue render shown above.

Purported real-life image of Mi 11 surfaces online ahead of launch

We might be just a few weeks away from the Xiaomi Mi 11 launch. Ahead of the launch, leaks are floating around on the internet and are building up to the scenario. Recently, we saw leaked images of Mi 11 and protective cases of Mi 11 Pro. Today, an alleged live image of the Mi 11 has appeared online.

Xiaomi Mi 11 render by Benjamin Geskin

As noted by Tipster Abhishek Yadav, a user (@毒舌数码 ) on Weibo has posted what he claims to be the real-life version of the Xiaomi Mi 11. As I write this, the image seems to be removed on the page but the post is still intact. However, thanks to early birds we have the image. Speaking of which, the supposed Mi 11 on the shot is Black in Color.

But it could just be a covering for a prototype or a test model as well. Anyway, the camera module is the elephant in the room. The image shows a similar squircle design with horizontally stacked triple-cameras. There are two big cut-outs and a small one above the LED flashlight. Having said that, let’s reserve our verdict on the authenticity of the Mi 11’s real-life shot till the official launch.

Although we are devoid of concrete info, leaks say that the camera sensors would be 108MP main, 13MP ultra-wide, and 5MP macro. That said, the Mi 11 is not the only device on the radar of leaks. Xiaomi is likely to follow the predecessor’s trend by launching Mi 11, Mi 11 Pro as a part of the series.

According to Xiaomi, it will be the first to use Snapdragon 888 SoC. The Mi 11 non-Pro is expected to feature an AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 4,780mAh battery with 55W charging. Considering the device is strongly rumored to go on sale this month with sufficient stocks we wouldn’t have to wait that long to know the official pricing.

Redmi GM speaks on the future of in-display fingerprint, faster charging tech, and more

Redmi general manager Lu Weibing insists that the demand for small phones has been on the increase in recent years. He also said battery technology needs to advance to deliver the same battery size in a smaller form factor.

Redmi 7

Weibing also made some mention of the future of fast charging and LCD-based in-display fingerprint sensors.

Fast-rising Chinese phone maker, Xiaomi has released various competitive devices this year, but smaller phones are not among the devices released so far. Weibing had previously said that the firm wants to build a small phone but that battery capacity will be sacrificed because the technology is yet to achieve longer-lasting batteries for such small phones.

In an interview session with Android Authority, Weibing acknowledged that indeed there is a growing demand for smaller phones. In his comments, he stated that extended battery life is a fundamental requirement for all Redmi smartphones, stressing that the challenge is developing a physically smaller battery with the same capacity as the larger one requires a tremendous breakthrough in battery technology.

In 2017, the Redmi 4X was released with a 4,100mAh battery while the phone was just 5 inches long. However, a greater challenge awaits the firm in this age 5G, with key components and multiple cameras taking up vital space, while 5G and high refresh rate screens require larger batteries too.

A bigger battery usually requires faster-charging speeds to maintain standard fast charging times. Xiaomi indeed launched 120W charging in 2020. But is there a limit to charging speeds? Improved battery technology holds the key, in the words of the Redmi Executive.
Inevitably, with recent tech advancements, low-end phones will soon have fast charging capabilities.

Although Weibing was silent on the kind of charging speeds Xiaomi is expecting for sub-$300 phones in 2021, the company has already revealed several low-budget phones with 30W or higher speeds in 2020, including the Redmi Note 9 Pro series. So it should be expected that fast charging technology may be more prevalent by 2021.

Of course, super-fast charging was not the only technology Weibing has touted in 2020. He also demonstrated in-display fingerprint sensors using LCD screens earlier this year. However, the implementation of technology seems to be stalled at the moment.

OPPO Reno5 5G and Reno5 Pro 5G launched in China with Snapdragon and MediaTek processors respectively

OPPO’s Reno series has gotten a refresh six months after the Reno4 series was announced in China. The new Reno5 series was announced in China today and it comes along with a pro model.

OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G

Reno5 Series Design

The Reno5 series comes with an upgraded design language. OPPO says the new patented process uses a pyramid-like crystal structure for the glass back panel that gives it an extra shine. They have also added an oleophobic coating to reduce smudges. The Galaxy Dream version of the two phones has a color-shifting feature as a result of the different refractive indexes of the thousands of nano-film coating used. OPPO has also added a fluorescent coating to the top of the phone and the camera housing which absorbs light and then glows in the dark.

Reno5 glow

Both phones are also light and thin. The Reno5 is 172 grams with a thickness of 7.9mm while the pro model is 173 grams but is thinner at 7.6mm. The Reno5 and Reno5 Pro will be available in Galaxy Dream, Aurora Blue, and Moonlit Night color variants.

Reno5 5G Specs

The Reno5 has a flat 6.43-inch OLED screen with a 2400 x 1080 resolution. The display has a 90Hz refresh rate and a 180Hz touch sampling rate. It has a pixel density of 410 PPI and a peak brightness of 750 nits. There is a hole at the top left corner of the screen for the front-facing camera.

The standard model comes with the same Snapdragon 765G processor as its predecessors – the Reno4 5G and the Reno4 Pro 5G. Buyers will be able to pick up the phone in two configurations – an 8GB RAM version with 128GB of storage and a 12GB RAM version with 256GB of storage. The storage type is UFS 2.1 (dual lane) and there is no support for expansion.

Reno5 cameras

There are four rear cameras on the back of the phone, though we are sure only two of them will get much use. The primary camera is a 64MP f/1.7 sensor with 6P Lens and it comes along with an 8MP f/2.2 ultrawide angle camera, a 2MP f/2.4 macro camera, and another 2MP f/2.4 camera for capturing depth details. The selfie camera is a 32MP f/2.4 sensor. There is no OIS but OPPO claims its electronic image stabilization does a good job.

There are a number of interesting camera features bundled with the phone. You can record from both the front and rear cameras at the same time; live HDR for videos even when recording at night; bokeh videos; and a professional portrait photo tool.

Reno5 5G all colors

The Reno5 5G has a 4300mAh battery and supports 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging. It is also backward compatible with SuperVOOC and VOOC 3.0 and has support for 18W power delivery and Quick Charge.

Other features are an in-display fingerprint scanner, support for face unlock, dual SIM card (nano only), Bluetooth 5.1, USB-C, and an audio jack. OPPO ships it with ColorOS 11 based on Android 11.

EDITOR’S PICK: OPPO patents its own version of the Galaxy Z Flip but it lacks a cover screen

Reno5 Pro 5G

The Reno5 Pro 5G has a slightly bigger display. It is a 6.55-inch curved OLED panel with the same resolution as the standard variant. It also has a punch hole, a 90Hz refresh rate, and a 120Hz touch sampling rate. Its peak brightness is also much higher at 1100 nits.

OPPO specifically states on the website that the Reno5 phones use displays sourced from different manufacturers, so there may be a difference in the displays of different units due to the varying manufacturing technology. The display supplier is stated on the retail box of the phone.

Reno5 Pro 5G all colors

Unlike the Reno4 Pro 5G that has a Snapdragon 765G processor, the Reno5 Pro 5G is powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000+ processor. It comes in the same configuration as the standard model.

For cameras, OPPO has carried over the exact configuration from the standard model but the 32MP camera has a slightly lower field of view. You also get practically the same camera features.

The Reno5 Pro has multifunctional NFC, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, and a USB-C port but skips the audio jack. It has dual SIM support and runs Android 11 out of the box. Its battery capacity is 4350mAh with 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 fast wired charging along with support for the other charging protocols as the standard model.

Price and Availability

The standard model is ¥2699 (~$413) for the 8+128GB version but if you want more RAM and storage, you can pick up the 12+256GB version for ¥2999 (~$458). The Reno5 Pro 5G is priced at ¥3399 (~$519) for the 8+128GB version while the 12+256GB version is ¥3799 (~$580). Both phones will be available for purchase starting December 18 but they can be pre-ordered now.

Reno5 Pro 5G New Year's Edition

There is a New Year’s Edition of the Reno5 Pro 5G that has 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage but it will go on sale on December 29.

LG to develop auto doors that use transparent OLED displays

Earlier this week, LG Electronics announced that it will collaborate with Assa Abloy to launch new variant of automatic doors that will use transparent OLED display panels. These would likely be used in the commercial sectors.

LG

For those unaware, Ass Abloy is a Sweden based company that makes doors, mechanical door locks, digital door locks and automatic doors as well. The company has supplied its automatic doors across the globe, including airports in London, Spain, and South Korea. So, the partnership with the South Korean tech giant would have it expand on its existing lineup, as per TheElec report.

The 55 inch LG OLED display panels will be used on these automatic doors. This will allow the doors to display various different messages, building information and even advertisements as well. In other words, this could open a whole new stream of revenue for airports and open another area for companies to advertise their products on.

Since the transparent OLED panels do not require a backlight like an LCD (liquid crystal display) display does, it offers higher transmittance or transparency. Thus, keep on the look out as we may soon see such automated doors with transparent OLED displays around us soon. Currently, no finer details regarding its development is known, neither has the company offered any specifics or roadmaps.
