Microsoft Surface Pro 8 prototype’s live images leaked

An engineering sample of a Microsoft Surface Pro 8 unit was recently spotted on via eBay. Since then, the device has been purchased by Redditor Unreliable_noob, who has even posted images of the yet to be released device.

Microsoft

According to an MSPowerUser report, the prototype device was barely distinguishable from the company’s previously launched Surface Pro 7. Although, the similarities were mostly in design as the internals received a refresh, with the new Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor, along with 32GB of RAM and 1TB of SSD storage. The Microsoft Surface Pro 8 also lacks a Thunderbolt 3 port but houses a larger 50,030mWh battery in comparison to the 45,000mWh on the Surface Pro 7.

Microsoft

While the device is still a prototype engineering sample and the company would likely still makes tweaks in its design and other aspects, it seems highly unlikely that the upcoming generation of Surface Pro will tablet will feature a new bezel less design on the front. However, since this is just a prototype one should take the specs and design with a pinch of salt for now, and wait for more officially announced details that should arrive soon. So stay tuned for more updates.

Huawei patents a complex hinge design for crease-free foldable smartphones

Recently, Huawei patented two foldable smartphone designs similar to the Galaxy Z Fold2 and Galaxy Z Flip. Now, another patent by the Chinese telecom giant imagines a complex hinge structure for foldable devices with the clamshell form factor.

Huawei Complex Hinge Design Patent Crease-Free Foldable Smartphone Featured

This newly spotted foldable smartphone hinge design patent was filed by Huawei Technologies with the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) on April 16, 2019. However, it got approved and published only on October 22, 2020. That means this patent is older than the other two foldable designs by the company.

That said, this particular patent was first unearthed by WindowsUnited. We later confirmed it via Incopat and found its number to be WO2020210987A1.

The document for this patent goes into detail about a complex hinge design. In a nutshell, this design is meant to avoid creases, which is one of the many cons of current-gen foldable handsets. It achieves this by using a modular design.

With this hinge design, the OLED panel contracts and expands when the phone is shut and opened like on the Motorola razr and razr 5G. In other words, the screen is not completely folded when the device is closed. If implemented, this hinge design can provide a crease-free foldable smartphone experience.

Having said that, Huawei’s diagrams showcase this hinge in a clamshell form factor. Hence, we don’t think the same hinge design can be implemented in foldables that unfold into a tablet.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro has limited supply in China due to high demand

Apple recently launched its much-awaited iPhone 12 series smartphones and now all four models are available for purchase. The demand for the newly launched devices is high and it seems that the company could struggle to meet the demand.

In China, it seems that the iPhone 12 Pro is the best-selling device among all the four models launched. And because of this, some of the sellers are selling the smartphone at an increased price, up to 1,000 yuan more than the original price.

EDITOR’S PICK: China Smartphone Market shipped 49.7 million 5G handsets in Q3 2020; Xiaomi was the only brand to grow

Apple’s own website in China is showing a wait time of around three to four weeks for the shipments of iPhone 12 Pro while other phones, including iPhone 12 and 12 Mini have a waiting period of just five to seven days.

Recently, it was reported that because of the increased demand, the company has increased production orders by 2 million. However, the company is also reportedly struggling to source power chips for the iPhones, and failure to procure the chips could impact the sales for this year or at least this quarter.

An estimate released by Cinda Securities projects that the demand for the iPhone 12 series will likely reach 80-85 million units. It is also estimated that Apple will likely ship around 230-240 million units of the iPhone 12 models in 2021. If this happens, the iPhone 12 series will emerge as the US company’s best-selling phones ever. Currently, that record is held by the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus with an estimated shipment of 224 million units.

HMD Global almost remade the Nokia N95; partners with YouTuber to show off prototype

HMD Global has made it a habit to remake certain classic Nokia phones, relaunching them with modern specs and a refined design. Since it began doing this a few years ago, it has remade a handful of classic phones, none of which is a smartphone. It turns out that there were plans to remake the Nokia N95, and now we get a first look at a prototype as well as design blueprints.

Nokia N95 remake prototype
A prototype of a modern Nokia N95

The Nokia N95 was a popular smartphone back in its days. The phone which had a slider design could be slid upwards to reveal its alphanumeric keypad or downwards to reveal a hidden set of playback controls at the top.

Popular YouTuber, Mr. Mobile, decided to revisit the icon in a special series, and when HMD Global heard about it, they decided to send him a prototype of a modern Nokia N95 that never became a final product.

The video shows that the remade Nokia N95 would have looked like the Nokia 3.4 with its cookie-shaped camera house with three cameras and a fingerprint scanner on the back. That sure doesn’t look like an interesting design until you realize that the phone can be slid sideways to the left to reveal a long speaker grille along with a wide-angle camera, an ultrawide angle camera, and an LED flash. But that’s not all.

The ring around the rear camera can also be pulled out to serve as a kickstand. The design allowed for the phone to be propped down to watch movies or make video calls or even serve as a sort of smart desk clock. Cool, right?

Chief Product Officer of HMD Global, Juho Sarvikas, also took to Twitter to reveal other designs they considered. One sketch shows the phone with a vertical sliding design that revealed a speaker at the bottom when slid upwards while another showed the device could be slid to the left to reveal the front-facing camera and a loudspeaker. Other designs that the company executive shared include a dual slider design and an angled slider design.

There is no info that the product has been completely abandoned but we believe this phone should have arrived two years ago when the mobile industry had a “slider phase” with phones such as the Mi MIX 3 and the Honor Magic 2.

What do you think about the prototype Nokia N95? Let us know in the comment box.

Samsung is the top phone vendor in Europe in Q3 2020, Xiaomi is third – Canalys

Canalys has released a couple of report showing the performance of the key smartphone manufacturers in the European market. Of particular interest is the performance of Huawei. The Chinese phone maker had shifted focus to Europe after the US shut it off the North American market. However, the recent ban which prevented the company from using Google Services seems to have continued to take its toll as the report shows Huawei recorded up to 31% decline in its annual growth even though it still maintains the fourth position in the European market ranking.

Samsung maintains its lead in the market even though it recorded a slender 3% annual growth. The Korean tech giant commands a 34% share of the European smartphone market, according to the report. U.S tech giant Apple is in the second position with an estimated market share of 19% in Q3 2020.

Xiaomi maintains the number 3 spot with an estimated 19% share of the market, the same with Apple. Canalys reports that Xiaomi’s market share represents a staggering 91% annual growth. However, the biggest growth recorded in the report is OPPO’s ascent into the top 5 European smartphone vendors with a 3% share of the market. The performance represents a 396% annual growth for the Chinese phone maker.

In Western Europe, the chart remains essentially the same with that of the entire European market but most of OPPO’s sales seem to have come from Western Europe where it recorded an annual growth of 942%.

However, Xiaomi emerges as the top smartphone vendor in Spain with a 34% share of the market. Samsung ranks second with 26% market share while Huawei’s 15% market share places it in the third position. OPPO jumps to the fourth position with an 8% market share while Apple drops to the fifth position with a 7% market share. Apple’s market share is expected to rebound post-iPhone 12 release in the fourth quarter.

Surface Hub operating system ported to the Lumia 950 XL

One activity developers like engaging in is porting a different operating system to a device it wasn’t originally designed for. For example, there are numerous reports of Android devices shown to be running on Windows.

The latest case of an operating system that has been ported to another device is that of the Surface Hub OS that was gotten to run on a Microsoft Lumia 950 XL. The incredible feat was pulled off by Gustave Monce (@gus33000), though he does admit it was a pointless project but an interesting one nonetheless.

Lumia 950 XL running Surface Hub OS

In a blog post where he detailed the steps for those who are curious as to how he pulled it off or who want to also test it on their Lumia 950 XL, he stated that the OS can also be gotten to work on the Lumia 950 but doesn’t work as smoothly as that of its bigger and more powerful sibling.

The Surface Hub is a digital whiteboard designed for workplaces. It has a touch-display, support for stylus input, and comes with programs such as Microsoft Teams and Office 365 that makes it easy for users to collaborate on work.

The Lumia 950 XL was released in 2015 as a smartphone running Windows 10 Mobile. The Snapdragon 810-powered smartphone packs 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It also had a 5.71-inch QHD display, a 20MP PureView rear camera, an iris scanner, and a 3340mAh battery.

AGM announces its first 5G phone – AGM X5, expected to launch soon

The 5G era is fast gaining ground as we have seen not just flagship models but also mid-range and affordable models having a 5G chip onboard. Rugged phone maker AGM is set to launch its first 5G phone. The company has released a few details of the smartphone including live images showing the front and rear aspects.AGM X5

The AGM X5 as it would be called, is expected to sport a 6.5-inch display amidst a rugged build. The phone will be launched exclusively in China this year but AGM has promised to push it to the global market in 2021.

In terms of the design, the device retains the rugged look AGM smartphones are known for. but this looks kind of cool. The phone features a metal frame wrapped with plastic for protection. The back panel is also made from metal manufactured using injection mould process. The phone packs a quad camera setup stacked vertically at the top left corner of the back panel. There is equally a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The display utilises a waterdrop notch which houses the rear camera.

Although the specifications pof the model is yet to be revealed, there are rumours that it could be powered by a Dimensity 1000 or Ivy 510 processors, both of which support SA and NSA networking. There are also speculations of the phone being available in up to 12GB RAM version as well as packing a 100MP sensor.

Leak reveals Galaxy S21 Ultra camera details: New 108MP sensor, ToF sensor removed

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra comes with four rear cameras. The primary sensor is a 108MP camera and among the other three is a Time of Flight (ToF) camera. For the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Samsung will be taking a different direction.

We already know that the flagship phone, which has been reported to launch on January 14, will have four rear cameras, thanks to an early look at its design. The popular leaker, Ice Universe, has revealed that there’s no ToF camera in the setup.

In a tweet posted a few days ago, he disclosed that the Galaxy S21 Ultra will come with an ISOCELL HM3 sensor. The 108MP camera will have a pixel size of 0.8µm and the setup will have a laser focus module. However, there will be no ToF sensor.

The ToF sensor on the Galaxy S20 Ultra is a 0.3MP sensor with an f/1.0 aperture. Its job is to help with depth details when taking portrait photos or recording live focus videos. If Samsung is removing it from the S21 Ultra, it is safe to say that it has another way of capturing the depth of field details.

Nevertheless, the phone still has four rear cameras and we know that asides from the 108MP primary camera, there will also be an ultrawide angle camera and a periscope telephoto camera. Our guess is that the fourth sensor is another telephoto camera.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra launches early next year alongside the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21 Plus. It will have a centered punch hole and be powered by the Snapdragon 875 processor or Exynos 2100 processor depending on the market.

OnePlus reported to skip Wear OS for its watch

The OnePlus Watch has been in the news a lot lately. Thanks to leaks, there is a lot we already know about the watch such as its design and the fact that it will have a CyberPunk 2077 Limited Edition.

One question that has been on our minds is the operating system that will power the OnePlus Watch. While that question still remains unanswered, we now know what operating system will not be powering it.

According to Max Jambor, the German blogger and leaker, the OnePlus Watch doesn’t run Google’s Wear OS designed for wearables. Depending on how you feel about Wear OS, this is either good news or bad news.

Nevertheless, we are not too surprised, as a lot of manufacturers, especially those based in China, are launching their smartwatches with proprietary operating systems that they can have better control over. Manufacturers skipping Wear OS is also expected based on how the operating system is being handled by Google.

It is safe to say that OnePlus will also follow a similar path and launch its smartwatch with its own proprietary operating system. However, we won’t bank on it having support for apps to be installed on to the watch.

There is still no info regarding when the OnePlus Watch will launch by Max Jambor does confirm it will be released, he just doesn’t know when it will be. Our guess is that the watch will be announced alongside the OnePlus 9 series which is expected to arrive in just a few months.
