AnTuTu lists the best iOS devices in October 2020, excludes iPhone 12

AnTuTu has just released its list for the best Apple iOS devices for the month of October 2020. This list excludes the newly launched iPhone 12 series and has the iPad Pro top the ranking.

AnTuTu

The reason for the exclusion of the iPhone 12 series is apparently its launch. The 2020 flagship lineup was finally unveiled on October 13, however, it was only received by a relatively small number of users. Thus, AnTuTu decided to exclude it from its list. The iOS devices ranked in their October list is based on the user reviews and its overall reception that have been received last month.

Looking at the list, the iPad Pro (12.9 inch model) took the top spot with 99.48 percent 5 star ratings from users. The iPhone SE came in second with 98.07 percent while the iPad Pro (9.7 inch) and iPad Pro 2 (10.5 inch) came in third and fourth with 98.06 and 97.3 percent respectively. The only other iPhone that made it to the top 5 in the list is the 5 year old iPhone 6S Plus with a 97.25 percent 5 star ratings.

AnTuTu

This list is indicative of how popular Apple devices remain despite their age. Other notable older models the iPhone 7 (96.03 percent), the base iPhone 6S (96.82 percent, and a couple of other iPad models as well. We might see the iPhone 12 lineup make an appearance in the November 2020 list. So stay tuned for more updates.

Smartwatches may soon be powered by wearers, researchers aim to use energy from human movements

Researchers in the CUHK (Chinese University of Hong Kong) are studying a new method to harvest energy from human movements. The results of the study could bring about a shift in the technology used in wearable technology like smartwatches in the near future.

Apple Watch SE

According to an SCMP report, the researchers are studying a swinging metal pole that is designed to mimic the movements of the human arms. The device that is built to harvest energy from this movement utilizes a highly compact generator, which contains under 10 components. This includes a motion capture unit and a power generation unit. The primary aim of this study is to harvest energy created by human motion to power smartwatches and wristbands.

The research began earlier this year after a boom in wearable devices was observed across the globe. In recent times, the industry for smartwatches and other wearables has grown and is expected to rise even further once the market recovers from the Coronavirus pandemic. In 2019, the wearable industry had become a 20.65 billion US Dollar market, which is projected to reach 96.31 billion US Dollars by 2027.

Fitbit

Furthermore, this category has also become increasingly health centric, with OEMs offering features that help users map their blood oxygen levels, heart rate, sleep patterns, and more. With the growth of health enthusiasts, this technology will also benefit the entire consumer market as well. At the moment, the primary concern with such devices is always the battery life, but the technology might be a stepping stone to a device that can sustain itself through just human motion. Since wearables have already saved lives in the recent past, not having to remove them for charging is another positive outcome.

Apple patents next gen Touch ID, uses Infrared technology housed under the display

Apple has just recently been granted a patent for the next generation of Touch ID. The company had filed a patent application back in 2019, which was for an infrared light technology that is housed under the display.

Apple

The patent was granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office, which involved a new image sensor that is housed under the device’s screen. Looking at the patent, the primary element is the new optical imaging system that will emit a shortwave infrared light through the display, while a photosensitive element will be configured to receive a reflection from the interface surface to map the image of the users’ fingers.

In other words, it is what appears to be an in display fingerprint scanner from the Cupertino based giant. The Apple patent also places a heavy emphasis on this “Shortwave Infrared light,” which is a crucial component of what appears to be next generation Touch ID.

Apple

Unfortunately, this is just a patent, and have no way of actually knowing if the company is developing or actively working with the technology at the moment. Furthermore, Apple has also been mainly focusing on Face ID for its flagship iPhones. Although, we might see this technology implemented on iPads or even a few budget iPhones in the near future.

AnTuTu October 2020: HUAWEI Mate40 Pro tops the list but not by a high margin

AnTuTu Benchmark has released the report for the month of October. The HUAWEI Mate40 Pro now leads the list of flagship smartphones. OPPO Find X2 and Mi 10 Pro are no longer in the top 10 list.  On the other hand, the mid-range smartphone list is virtually unchanged with only one minor difference, compared to last month’s report

AnTuTu Benchmark October 2020 Featured

In case you are not aware, AnTuTu, a popular Chinese benchmarking platform publishes reports every month with lists of top-performing Android smartphones. The scores considered by the firm are average points garnered by the devices and not their highest score.

Right now, the HUAWEI Mate40 Pro is the only Android smartphone in the world powered by a 5nm chipset, HiSilicon Kirin 9000 to be exact. Hence, it makes sense for it to top the list for October with 685,359 points.

But despite being based on a 7nm process, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865-equipped iQOO 5 Pro at second place scores 663,979 points. That’s because the amount of RAM and refresh rate affects scores. Both of which are higher in the iQOO device (12GB, 120Hz) compared to the Mate40 Pro (8GB, 90Hz).

Then, surprisingly, vivo X50 Pro+ (661, 342 points) overtakes the Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra (659,561 points). That’s not all, the newly launched Redmi K30S Ultra (660,133 points) aka Mi 10T also scores than Xiaomi’s 10th-anniversary flagship.

Further, the ASUS ROG Phone 3 with 630,765 points overshadows Lenovo Legion Pro, which scored 625,394 points. Whereas, as mentioned in the beginning, the Mi 10 Pro, which has been now discontinued and OPPO Find X2 don’t make it to the list.

On the other hand, the list for mid-range smartphones has only one change and that is the HUAWEI nova7 Pro (382,866 points) is now ahead of the vanilla nova7 (382,771 points).

The phone is powered by the company’s new A14 Bionic chipset and comes with support for 5G connectivity for the first time on iPhone. Also, the device has a dual-camera system that is aimed at offering better photography results.

Apple iPhone 12 Mini starts at $699 for the base model with 64GB internal storage but the company is also offering 128GB and 256GB storage models. The device will be available for pre-order in several regions from 6th November.

No Mi MIX 4 in 2020 says tipster, but foldables & 200W+ charging phones likely to launch in 2021

Xiaomi has launched a lot of smartphones this year in China, but there are fans who eagerly waiting for the arrival of the new MI MIX series phone. Last year, Xiaomi announced the Mi MIX Alpha concept phone in September. With just two months remaining for the year 2020 to end, Xiaomi is still mum on the arrival of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 4 that is expected to succeed the Mi MIX 3 5G that was announced in February 2019. Today, a reliable tipster from China claimed that Xiaomi will not be launching a new Mi MIX phone this year.

According to the tipster, there is no news about Xiaomi mass-producing a Mi MIX series smartphone this year. The Mi MIX branded phones by Xiaomi has always featured top-notch design and specs. However, it now appears that Xiaomi fans will get to see a new Mi MIX phone only in the coming year.

Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha

He added that Xiaomi has plans to mass-produce phones with technologies like under-display camera, 200W+ fast charging, and foldable phones with internal in-folding design. The flagship and high-end phones from Xiaomi only support Full HD+ resolution. It can be said based on the leak that the Chinese firm will launch more phones with Quad HD+ displays next year.

The Xiaomi Mi 10 Ultra that launched a few months ago supports 120W fast charging. The support for 200W+ on a smartphone sounds too be good to be true. Probably, it could be made available on a foldable phone that features a large capacity dual-part battery. As far as the under-display camera technology is concerned, it could be made on the Mi 20 series or even on a budget-friendly phone as ZTE did.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 details leak online weeks ahead of launch

Qualcomm Tech Summit is scheduled to start from 1st December and the company will be announcing its next-generation flagship smartphone chipset — Qualcomm Snapdragon 875. Now, just weeks before the official announcement, details about the upcoming SoC have been leaked online.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 Processor

A new report coming from China claims that the Snapdragon 875 will be manufactured using a 5nm node. It’s noteworthy that this is not new information as it had already been revealed earlier. Also, it won’t be the first chipset to be made using the 5nm process as Apple A14 Bionic and Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 9000 have already been launched.

The report reveals that the upcoming octa-core chipset will come with one oversized core clocked at 2.84GHz, three Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.42GHz, and four Cortex-A55 cores which are clocked at 1.8GHz. It is also said to pack Adreno 660 GPU for enhanced graphics performance.

As for the connectivity support, the SoC is expected to come with Snapdragon X60 5G modem but it remains to be seen if the company opts to make it an integrated modem, similar to what it did with its predecessor.

Just a couple of days ago, a prototype device powered by the Qualcomm SD875 SoC was spotted on the AnTuTu benchmarking platform, revealing that the chipset scored 899,401 points with a CPU score of 333,246 points and a GPU score of 342,225 points.

Samsung Galaxy S21 series launch and pre-order dates revealed

There have been reports that the Galaxy S21 series will be arriving earlier than the Galaxy S20 did. If you are wondering how early it is, a new leak has revealed the dates the phones will be announced as well as pre-order and launch dates.

Galaxy S21 Ultra
Galaxy S21 Ultra render

The source of the leak is Jon Prosser, and in a tweet posted just a short while ago, he has confirmed the names of Samsung’s next Galaxy S flagships, revealed their announcement, pre-order, and launch dates, as well as the colors they will be available in.

The next Galaxy S series will arrive as the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra. This naming makes sense as it goes with the year the phone will be launched. So if you are among the few that want the phones to launch as the Galaxy S30 series, you will have to wait until the year 2030.

The Galaxy Unpacked event will hold on January 14, 2021, according to the leaker while pre-order will begin the same day. Roughly two weeks later, on January 29 to be precise, the Galaxy S21 series will go on sale.

The leaker also revealed that the phones will come in Black, White, Grey, Silver, Violet, and Pink. It appears Samsung has dropped blue and red colorways but we won’t be surprised if more colors are announced later in the year or for select regions. It is important to state that there is no assurance that all three phones will come in all of the aforementioned colors. A leak from a few days ago already revealed the colors each Galaxy S21 phone will be available in.

With respect to specs, all three phones will come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 875 processor/Exynos 2100 depending on the market and Infinity-O displays with centered punch holes. The Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus will have three rear cameras while the Ultra model will have four rear cameras.

New info says Galaxy Z Flip 2 launch now scheduled for Summer 2021

The Galaxy Z Fip launched early this year as Samsung’s first vertically folding smartphone. Some six months later, Samsung announced a 5G version that also swapped the Snapdragon 855+ processor for the more powerful Snapdragon 865+. Rumors of a successor have been flying around for a while now and the latest says that the Galaxy Z Flip 2 will be arriving much later.

galaxy z flip

According to Ross Young, the founder and lead analyst of DisplaySearch, the 2nd generation Galaxy Z Flip will not arrive until the summer of next year. Just a few days ago, he had reported that the phone will be announced in spring.

According to the latest tweet, the launch was moved back to the summer but there is no reason attached to the decision.

In the replies, he confirmed that the Galaxy Z Flip 2 will come with a larger cover display than that of the 1st-gen model but which will still be smaller than that of the Motorola Razr. The Z Flip has a 1.1-inch cover screen while the Motorola Razr has a 2.7-inch cover screen.

There is still a lot we do not know about the upcoming phone but it should come with Qualcomm’s top-end processor. However, an Exynos-powered version will be a surprise. It has also been reported that the phone will have a bigger battery and upgraded hinges.

Mi 10 Pro 5G discontinued in China; removed from site and official stores

The Mi 10 Pro 5G was one of two flagships that Xiaomi announced in the first half of the year. The phone packed better cameras and a faster charging technology than the standard model. Eight months after its release, it appears Xiaomi has discontinued the flagship.

Mi 10 Pro 5G

If you check the official Xiaomi China website now, the Mi 10 Pro is no longer listed among the Mi phones for sale. The current lineup of phones includes the Mi 10 Ultra, the Mi 10 5G, the Mi 10 Youth Edition, and the Mi MIX Alpha. The absence of the Mi 10 Pro leads us to believe that Xiaomi has discontinued the phone in China.

Chinese blog, ITHome, also reports that the phone is listed as “Out of Stock” on Xiaomi’s official stores on Tmall and Jingdong. We also checked the Youpin store and found that the phone is no longer available there too. However, the phone is still available for purchase in other countries where it was launched.

The Mi 10 Pro 5G was announced in mid-February. It packed a 6.67-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and a hole in the top left corner of the screen for a selfie camera. Powered by the Snapdragon 865 processor, the phone was made available in multiple variants with the highest configuration having 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Design

The iPhone 12 lineup comes with exactly the same design with the exception of the camera module, the dimensions and the weight. The iPhone 12 Mini is the most beautiful because it is the most compact and even the lightest Apple phone of the lineup. But it is not for everyone due to its very small display. Despite the different dimensions and battery capacities, the four iPhones come with exactly the same thickness: 7.4 mm. What changes is the weight. All of them are waterproof up to 6 meters deep for max 30 minutes with the IP68 certification.

Display

The best display belongs to the 12 Pro Max. It is wider than the other phones (6.7 inches) and it contains more pixels. But the differences between the display of the Pro Max and the other variants are marginal, at least if we compare it with iPhone 12 and 12 Pro. These two handsets come with exactly the same panel, while the iPhone 12 Mini has an inferior and smaller display with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels (instead of 1170 x 2532 pixels of the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro). These devices do not rely on an in-display fingerprint reader, but they got Face ID thanks to the sensors found in the notch.

Hardware/Software

iPhone 12, 12 Pro, 12 Mini, and 12 Pro Max are powered by the same chipset: the Apple A14 Bionic built at 5 nm with 5G support thanks to an external modem. What changes are the memory configurations: the 12 Pro and Pro Max are actually better because they pack 6 GB of RAM, while you get just 4 GB with iPhone 12 and 12 Mini. Further, with the Pro variants, you can get up to 512 GB of internal storage instead of 256 GB. This may be relevant on a phone without expandable storage.

Camera

Besides packing more RAM, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max have a better camera department. They include two more sensors in their camera modules: a 12 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and OIS, and a LiDAR scanner to calculate depth info for AR appliances. With the iPhone 12 and 12 Mini, you get the same main camera and the same ultrawide camera as the Pro variants, but they lack the LiDAR scanner and the telephoto lens. There are no differences when it comes to the front cameras.

Battery

With its bigger 3687 mAh battery, 12 Pro Max is the battery life champion. Right after, we got iPhone 12 and 12 Pro with 2815 mAh, while the iPhone 12 Mini takes the last place with its 2227 mAh battery.

Price

Which iPhone should you go for? It depends on your needs. The 12 Pro Max is naturally the best, but it is costlier. You do not need it if you are not a productivity user and, if you are ok with smaller dimensions and you do not need the best cameras, the iPhone 12 Mini can be enough for you. The iPhone 12 is an iPhone 12 Mini with bigger dimensions, a bigger battery, and a slightly better display, while the 12 Pro is just a smaller Pro Max with a smaller battery. The vanilla version starts at $799/€939, 12 Pro begins at $999/€1189, iPhone 12 Mini costs $699/€839 in its base variant, and the 12 Pro Max starts from $1099/€1289 (note that prices vary depending on the market). Which one would you pick?

Global Tablet Shipments rose 10.5%QoQ in Q3 2020; will hit an 13-Quarter high in Q4: Digitimes

The latest Digitimes Research says that Global Tablet shipments will peak in Q4 2020. To be precise, it is reportedly going to hit a 13-quarter high towards the end of the year(Q4 2020).

The report predicts that Tablet shipments will rise 7.3% QoQ(Quarter-over-Quarter) in Q4 2020 globally. Such a result will reportedly be due to a steady rise in orders from SEA(South East Asia), India. And Latin America(LA) for educational purposes. Total tablet shipments globally in Q3 was about 43.83 million units with 10.5%QoQ and 0.4%YoY(Year-on-Year) rise. In this, non-Apple vendors dominated with aggressive pricing.

However, Apple leads the pack that has Samsung, Huawei, Amazon, and Lenovo in the next 4 places of Top vendors. Besides, Lenovo will likely topple Huawei, and Amazon to capture the third spot by expanding shipments in Q4. Back in Q2, Lenovo and Huawei were the fastest-growing tablet brands. However, Huawei is now hit by the US-sanctions which might bit it more at least in the near future.

Further, the report says that 10.1-inch and above-sized tablets shipped below 80% in Q3 as demands for lower sizes rose. However, when the pandemic was at peak, higher sized-tablets were in great demand for education, and media purposes. That said, If the report is true, this will further fall below 65% in Q4 due to new attractive offerings from Samsung, Microsoft(8x-11x size).

Additionally, shipments of ODMs(Original Design Manufacturers) in Taiwan like Compal Electronics rose to 40% as they clinched onto the new iPad Air 4. However, Foxconn slipped in Q3 albeit hovering just above 50%. iPad Air 3‘s shipments will reportedly die down more meaning Foxconn might fall below the said percent in Q4. Besides, rivals like Quanta and Pegatron will sore up in Q4 thanks to the new Microsoft Surface series of Tablets.
