Honor X1 Smart TV series launched in three sizes with 4k resolution

Honor’s Smart Life product launch earlier today also saw the launch of the Honor  X1 Smart TV in China. Honor made its first entrance into the smart TV market last year with the launch of the Honor Smart Screen. The X1 is an entirely new series and even though the specs are trimmed down, the TV still is an impressive one that will surely compete with Xiaomi’s product line. Honor X1 Smart Screen

The Honor X1 Smart TV series is available in three sizes: 50-inch, 55-inch, and 65-inch. It uses a 4K ultra-high-definition full-screen display with a 94% screen-to-body ratio. It also features 3D streamer narrow bezels, a large  logo at the back and texture design .

The new smart TV series is said to feature a comprehensive upgrade in audio and video. In terms of image quality, it supports a wide color gamut of 92% DCI-P3 and an AI magic image quality engine. In addition, it also comes with MEMC technology which provides real-time dynamic picture compensation.Honor X1 Smart Screen

Amazfit Aeri self-disinfecting mask supports unlocking your phone with Face ID

Face masks have become a necessity for everyone since the COVID-19 pandemic. However, for those who own a phone with support for face unlock, unlocking their devices have proved difficult. The reason is that more than half of the face is covered when you put on a mask, so face unlock is impossible unless…….you have the Amazfit Aeri mask.

Amazfit Aeri Mask

Huami to the rescue!

When news of folks having difficulties unlocking their devices first began to surface, Huami announced it was working on a mask that will allow users to unlock their device using Face ID without having to pull off the mask. The Chinese manufacturer has now shared drawings of what the mask looks like.

Amazfit Aeri Design

The Amazfit Aeri has a transparent design. Huami says it will be made of an anti-fog material, making it easier to unlock your phone via Face ID. The mask will also have built-in ultraviolet lights for self-disinfection which work when you plug in a USB Type-C cable to the side.

Amazfit Aeri Mask

The mask also uses removable air-filters that can last for six weeks before replacement, thanks to the ultraviolet disinfection. N95 masks are effective for just 8 hours before replacement, so being able to use a filter for more than a month is definitely good news. It is important to mention that we do not know if Amazfit’s Ares mask will meet the N95 standard as Huami didn’t mention it.

Amazfit Aeri Mask

The Amazfit Aeri will also have a modular design that allows for adding accessories such as an eye shield or a fan so users can wear it while exercising and not worry about suffocation.

Long wait ahead

Huami says they have begun making prototypes of the Amazfit Aeri but it will not be available commercially for at least 6 months to a year. That is a pretty long time to wait but we won’t be surprised if another Chinese manufacturer beats them to it by launching a similar product.

While there is no info on the price, Huami has said that it plans to make it as affordable as its other products. We expect a price tag not less than $50 when the Aeri mask launches.

Huawei responds to new US Sanctions, says it could affect various global industries

Earlier this year, the US government had proposed actions that could potentially hamper Huawei‘s operations globally by limiting chip supplies to the Chinese tech giant. Now, the company in the Huawei Analyst Summit 2020 event officially responded to these recent sanctions, stating that it could affect various global industries apart from just Huawei.

Huawei

During the conference which was streamed online, officials stated that the company had complied with all government rules and regulations with the original trade ban back in 2019. However, the recent sanctions that are directly against the company have made Huawei actively oppose the amendments made by the US Department of Commerce. Furthermore, these sanctions could also be used to pressure other industries as well.

Huawei

Huawei officials said that the US government has proceeded with such measures despite negative feedback and concerns expressed by “many companies and industry associations.” Rather, these actions can also be used to “undermine” industries worldwide, including more than 3 billion Huawei users. According to Huawei, the actions may hamper its expansion, maintenance, and operations in more than 170 countries.

This move will seek to interrupt a network chain worth hundreds of millions of dollars and could have a serious impact on a wide range of industries across the globe. Huawei called out the United State’s bullying attitude stating they are taking advantage of their “own technological strengths in an attempt to crush industries outside its borders.” In other words, undertake discriminating policies against foreign multinational corporations.

Huawei

The US sanctions that have limited chip supply from TSMC to Huawei could have far reaching implications. The company believes that this move can damage the “trust and collaboration” with the semiconductor industry, which is an integral part of various other industries as well. They also added that in the long run, these actions might hurt the US itself by creating a distrust in foreign companies that may not deal with “US technologies or supply chains” in the future due to sanctions like these.

Google Pixel 5 series to reportedly ditch Motion Sense

Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL flagship smartphones from the tech giant were launched with a Soli radar chip to offer hands-free usage capabilities. However, the feature hasn’t gained much traction and the phone’s sales are quite low.

So, as per the reports, because of the failure of this Motion Sense feature, the company will be ditching this feature altogether in the next iteration, i.e. Google Pixel 5 series which should get launched this fall.

Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL featured
Google Pixel 4 XL

Motion Sense feature which makes use of the Project Soli radar chip, enables users to make use of gesture-based control system for hands-free experience. While many smartphone brands have offered gesture-based navigation features, Google‘s is the first one to be dependent on a Soli radar chip hardware.

One of the reasons for the low sales of Google Pixel 4 series, apart from the older design and not-so-important premium features, could be the lack of availability in some regions. Because of the presence of soli radar chip which uses certain frequency range, the company needs to obtain permission for frequency usage from the company where it plans to sell the devices. Thus, the smartphone series never made it to countries like India, Japan, China, among others.

It makes total sense for the company to ditch this Motion Sense feature which is restricting itself from selling the smartphones to two of the world’s leading markets. Also, why should Google include a premium feature that no one really wants to use?

As for the upcoming Google Pixel 5 series, the company is expected to ditch the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC and could instead adopt the Snapdragon 765G chipset which is aimed at premium mid-range devices. The reason behind this could be to keep the phone’s pricing on the lower side as the SD865 is quite expensive compared to its predecessors in the same lineup.

Getting rid of the Motion Sensor will also enable Google to offer a full-screen smartphone experience. The Pixel 5 series is expected to come with a triple-camera setup on the back and this time, the company is said to include a wide-angle sensor as well. We expect more rumours, leaks, and details regarding Pixel 5 lineup to surface in the coming weeks.

Realme TV will feature MediaTek chip, 24W four speakers, Dolby Audio, and more

Realme is all set to launch its first-ever smart TV in India on May 25 along with Realme Watch. The brand has been teasing its features on official Realme Link Twitter account for a few days now. But thanks to a dedicated microsite on Flipkart, we are now aware of almost all the specifications of Realme TV.

Realme TV Specifications

Realme was supposed to unveil the Realme TV at MWC 2020 but unfortunately, that got cancelled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Anyway, it will be now finally going official next week in India and maybe also in China as the brand has revealed to launch 8 new products on the same day as the Indian launch (May 25).

Anyway, talking about the specs mentioned on Flipkart, the Realme TV will feature a modern design with a bezel-less screen. The brand claims the panel to reach 400 nits of brightness with support for Chroma Boost Picture Engine. We believe it will be similar to Xiaomi’s Vivid Picture Engine on Mi TVs that boosts the color saturation of the content.

Further, it will be powered by a MediaTek chip unlike Amlogic on Xiaomi Mi TVs, Mi Boxes, and the upcoming Mi TV Stick. This chipset will include a 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 CPU and Mali-470 MP3 GPU.

Also, the forthcoming Realme TV will come with 24W four stereo speakers with support for Dolby Audio. As usual, Realme also claims its first TV to have undergone quality tests such as -20℃ low-temperature test, 760mm drop test, 5,000 times remote button test, and 5,500 times power on/off test.

That said, the microsite does not reveal in what sizes the Realme TVs will be offered in. It also does not mention the software but that has been confirmed as Android TV by the brand on Twitter.

We expect Realme to reveal more features of its first smart TV since the product will only go official next week.

Oppo

Ex-Meizu exec Li Nan: Chinese companies should take a gamble, Recalls Blue Charm Metal without Qualcomm & Google

Amidst news of Huawei ban extension, many Chinese industrialists have shared their opinions on social media like Weibo. One of them was Li Nan, the co-founder and former senior vice president of Meizu. He said companies should not depend on globalization and free trade to succeed instead they should be self-reliant to some extent for worst-case scenarios.

Meizu VP Li Nan
Li Nan, Co-Founder and Former Senior Vice President of Meizu

Huawei’s ban was extended for another year last week by the US government. The White House is also moving ahead to cut the chip supplies to the Chinese telecom giant. In response, China is readying its own ‘Unreliable Entity List’ targeting American companies like Apple and Qualcomm.

To this, Li Nan recalled Meizu’s Blue Charm Metal smartphone, which did not feature any US-made technology. This device was powered by MediaTek X10 SoC and ran YunOS (based on AOSP) developed by the Alibaba Group. This handset was a successful product selling millions of units.

He also added that Meizu has been using Qualcomm chipsets merely for the last 3 years. He cited the company’s growth rate was much better when it didn’t use them. Further, Mr Nan said that it is time to gamble again to be self-reliant since we never know when anti-globalization and anti-free trade will creep in.

The Chinese government is yet to officially announce its move against the US. When it does, we expect the trade war to become more extreme than ever affecting a large number of companies.

MediaTek announces Dimensity 820 chipset for affordable 5G devices

MediaTek has just revealed its new processor earlier today (18th May 2020). The Dimensity 820 SoC is the latest entry in the company’s Dimensity 800 series, which was announced back at CES. The new processor feature 5G support and will be housed in smartphones that will launch later this year.

Smartphones with 5G networking have become more common in recent times. When they had originally launched, only the most expensive flagship models feature the newer and faster bandwidth. But with MediaTek announcing the new Dimensity 820 SoC, more 5G enabled handsets may soon arrive in lower and more affordable smartphone segments as well.

MediaTek

According to Dr. Yenchi Lee, Assistant General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Communications Business Unit, “Our Dimensity 1000 is already powering impressive flagship 5G devices in a number of markets. With the new Dimensity 820, we’re now making 5G much more accessible. The Dimensity 820 stands out beyond competitors by offering four high-performance Arm Cortex-A76 cores at 2.6GHz within its octa-core CPU, delivering superb performance and responsiveness, among its incredible AI, gaming and photography experiences.

Talking about the new processor’s capabilities, the Dimensity 820 supports MediaTek’s APU 3.0 that helps in providing more powerful camera features. Thanks to Imagiq 5.0, the processor’s ISP, smartphones that ship with this chip can house up to 4 cameras with sensors size as high as 80 megapixels. This chipset also supports Multiframe 4K video HDR and is optimized for gaming as well.

MediaTek Dimensity 800

In terms of networking, the Dimensity 820 supports global sub-6GHz 5G networks in Asia, North America, and Europe. According to MediaTek, the new chip also offers “higher average speeds and a seamless handover between two 5G connection areas for the most reliable connectivity on the go.” While the chipset seems quite impressive right now, we will have to wait for the launch to see how it actually stacks up against its primary competition, Qualcomm, and its Snapdragon 765G and 768G processors.

OPPO pushes for the European market aggressively after Vodafone deal

OPPO is apparently pushing more aggressively towards the European market, especially after a partnership with telecom giant Vodafone. This move is an expansion of the Chinese company’s presence in the region and may even hamper Huawei‘s performance as well.

After losing Google support and services, Huawei has had to launch its Android smartphones with its own services and app ecosystem, like AppGallery. However, many popular major apps like YouTube, Facebook, and more are missing, which is likely to be a major hindrance to its overseas users, especially in Europe. While this puts pressure on the Chinese tech giant, it also opens up opportunities for other players like OPPO to step up.

In a recent announcement, OPPO had revealed that it is partnering up with Vodafone to brings its smartphones to the European market. The deal begins later this month and will have OPPO aggressively launching and promoting its 5G enables handsets. These devices will likely arrive with the value for money philosophy the company practices and offer affordable 5G smartphones in the growing European 5G market.

The UK, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Romania, and Turkey are the first nations where OPPO is aiming at right now. Notably, Vodafone had pulled Huawei handsets from its UK 5G network last year after the company had been banned by the US. But now, the telecom operator has found another Chinese vendor to replace the growing demand for 5G smartphones. The partnership will have the companies jointly look into online sales aggressively, considering that physical stores are still closed under the coronavirus lockdown.

These options clearly hint at the TWS nature of the upcoming earbuds and those interested in the poll can definitely participate in the naming of the device. The poll is currently live and will take in entries till the next 22 hours, or about 10 am (IST). Interestingly, a few users noted that an option to call it just the POCO Buds would also be appreciated. However, it is unknown if outside entries are also being considered.

The move from POCO signifies a new shift for smartphone OEMs that in recent years have been moving to include more products in their electronic ecosystem. This is something Apple has been doing for years and, now, more vendors are taking up the same philosophy. Unfortunately, we don’t really know a lot regarding the company’s upcoming TWS earbuds, so stay tuned for more details that should arrive soon.
