OPPO teases a new audio product, could be Breeno smart speaker

Today, OPPO has teased the launch of its new product in its home market China. The poster confirms that the device will be unveiled on 7th April, i.e. tomorrow.

While the company has not revealed what product it plans to launch in China tomorrow, the poster shared for the announcement shows a black-colored circular device, which is similar to the Google Home Mini.

This hints that the device could be a smart speaker from OPPO, powered by Breeno which is the company’s own smart voice assistant. Another possibility is that the device is a new true-wireless earbuds from OPPO and the teaser image showcases its charging case.

OPPO Breeno Smart Speaker

However, given that the company has already launched a TWS earbuds, there’s higher possibility that the device in question is the Breeno Smart Speaker from OPPO. But there were also reports suggesting that the company could launch a new wireless earbuds with noise cancelling in mid-March.

To know for sure what the company has up its sleeves, we’ll have to wait for a few more hours for the company to make official announcement.

OPPO seems to be focusing on launching audio products from some time with an aim to expand its product offerings, apart from smartphones. The company has recently launched OPPO Enco Free TWS earbuds and OPPO Q1 wireless noise cancelling headphones.

BIS reveals Realme TV will have a 43-inch panel

Realme launched its first smartband exactly a month ago. The manufacturer is also working on its first smartwatch and first smart TV. While we already know what the watch looks like thanks to a tease by the CEO, Madhav Sheth, we have very little info on the TV. Thankfully, a BIS listing has revealed its screen size.

The image below which is from the Burea of Indian Standards (BIS) reveals the smart TV will launch as the “realme TV 43”. From the name, one can deduce the TV will have a 43-inch screen. The image also reveals the model number for the TV is JSC55LSQL.

Realme TV

We do not know if this is the only size Realme plans to launch first or if there will be other sizes too. Nevertheless, we expect more details to surface in the coming weeks since the TV is scheduled to launch this quarter.

In the past year, more phone manufacturers have entered into the smart TV industry. Huawei, Honor, and OnePlus all announced their first smart TVs last year and should follow it up with new models this year. Motorola and Nokia also partnered with the Indian e-commerce store, Flipkart, to also launch smart TVs last year.

iPhone 8 recovered from a river after two months still worked perfectly

Apple iPhones have long garnered a reputation for the fluid and secure software as well as their impressive camera. Apple added one feature that has come to be a vital one for the models and that is a water-resistant build. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models which were launched in 2016, were the first water-resistant iPhones released by Apple. Since then, we have heard amazing stories of how the waterproof build has come to the rescue in rather bizarre circumstances.

The latest of such stories is that of a British woman who accidentally dropped her phone in the Thames while feeding swans and after two months, she luckily stumbled on the phone in the river bed and it was still in prestine condition.

A woman who dropped her phone in the River Thames found it in the water two months later – and it still worked.

British Airways administrator Thayse Bussolo-Vieira, 29, was feeding the swans when her brand new iPhone 8 fell out of her pocket and into the river in early February. The loss was devastating as a result of the thousands of memorable photos inside the phone that she was yet to back up. According to the lady, she even contemplated jumping into the water but backtracked due to the inherent danger in doing so due to the high water level.

Luck smiled on Thayse two months later when she and her fiance were out on their daily permitted walk. They had walked to the spot in Staines-upon-Thames and were surprised to see the phone lying on the riverbed.

We recall a similar story of Erica Bennett who had dropped her iPhone in the Edisto River while she was out with family back in June 2018. The phone had spent 15 months inside the river before it was discovered by a YouTube star who was diving for treasures. Apart from “black erosion” hat had covered the body, the phone still worked perfectly after plugging it in a power source.

Thanks to the waterproof build, newer iPhone owners have nothing to worry about when it comes to water.

iQOO Neo 3 will have a 120Hz LCD display

The iQOO Neo 3 is an upcoming flagship phone that is expected to take on the Redmi K30 Pro. The latter is currently the most affordable Snapdragon 865 phone you can purchase but iQOO wants to challenge it for the crown with its Neo 3 which is expected later this month. Ahead of the launch of the phone, some of its key specs have leaked.

According to Digital Chat Station, a popular Chinese blogger and leaker, the iQOO Neo 3 will have a 6.6-inch FHD+ display. However, unlike its predecessors which have an AMOLED display, the iQOO Neo 3 will come with an LCD panel. He adds that the panel has a 120Hz refresh rate and has a punch hole.

iQOO 3 Neo specs

The Redmi K30 Pro, in order to keep its low price tag, has a 60Hz AMOLED display. However, a high-refresh-rate is a feature that more buyers want in their phones, which explains why iQOO is going with a 120Hz panel. However, with it being an LCD panel they can keep the cost of production low.

Another key info revealed is the camera specs. The leaker revealed the phone will have a 48MP camera. This is definitely the primary rear camera, although we do not know if it is the same sensor as the one used in the iQOO 3 5G.

The iQOO Neo 3 will have a Snapdragon 865 processor which means it should have a 5G modem paired with it. Nevertheless, we won’t be surprised if there is a 4G version just as the iQOO 3 has a 4G version. This 4G version should even have a cheaper price tag.

What do you think about the iQOO Neo 3’s 120Hz LCD display? Let us know in the comment box below.

ADDITIONAL FEATURES Dual SIM slot, splash resistant Dual SIM slot, splash resistant Dual SIM slot, splash resistant

Design

At first glance, the vanilla Realme 6 has the most elegant design because it is more minimalistic. While the 6i comes with a notch and 6 Pro has a dual punch-hole, the vanilla version has just a single punch hole in the display. But the 6 Pro wins the design comparison because it is the only with a glass back and its rear side is way more attractive than Realme 6. The silver medal obviously goes to the vanilla version. But each of these phones has a good build quality and protection against water (they are splash resistant).

Display

The displays of Realme 6 and 6 Pro offer exactly the same specifications with the exception of the diagonal: the Pro variant has a slightly wider 6.6-inch screen (but it comes with a dual punch hole instead of a single one). In both cases, you get a Full HD+ resolution, a 90 Hz refresh rate, and a 120 Hz touch-sampling rate, as well as a high 480 nits brightness. The 6i is inferior with its 6.5-inch display sporting a lower HD+ resolution and a standard 60 Hz refresh rate. So if you need a very nice display, either go for the IPS panel of the Realme 6 or the 6 Pro without thinking twice.

Specs & Software

Despite it is mounted on a more affordable version, the Helio G90T found on the vanilla Realme 6 has actually better CPU and GPU performance than the Snapdragon 720G found on the 6 Pro. A lot of people prefer Qualcomm’s chipsets due to MediaTek’s past, but that is the truth. On the other hand, the Snapdragon 720G has a way lower energy consumption than Helio G90T as it is built with a 7 nm production process. The memory configurations in which the two handsets are offered are the same. Realme 6i is powered by an Helio G80 chipset which is inferior to both Helio G90T and Snapdragon 720G, but it is still a very nice SoC with high GPU capabilities. With the whole trio, you get Android 10 out of the box, customized by Realme UI.

Camera

Realme 6 Pro has the most advanced cameras and despite it is not a high-end camera phone, it includes a telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom. It even comes with an ultrawide dual front camera. Its camera potentialities are superior to Realme’s mid-rangers released during the last year, including the Realme X2. Currently, the only better camera phones from Realme are the X2 Pro and the X50 Pro 5G. The silver medal goes to the vanilla Realme 6 coming with a quad rear camera, but it lacks a telephoto sensor and an ultrawide front camera.

Battery

Realme 6i is able to offer the longest battery life thanks to a huge 5000 mAh battery and a display packing a lower resolution and a standard refresh rate. Right after, there is 6 Pro which achieves a better result thanks to its efficient Snapdragon 720G chipset.

Price

Realme 6 and 6i are available globally with price tags starting from €199 and €229, while 6 Pro is still an Indian exclusive with a price starting from Rs. 16,999 in the peninsula. At the end of the day, the 6 Pro wins the comparison. But if you do not care a lot about cameras, maybe Realme 6 is enough for you. The 6i boasts the longest battery life, but the other specs are inferior to both 6 and 6 Pro.

Haylou Solar Smart Watch arrives with a round dial and a 30-day battery life

Haylou (pronounced as “Hello”) is one of the first companies under Xiaomi’s ecosystem. Established in 2015, the company was originally known for its audio products including TWS earbuds. However, it wasn’t really popular until it announced its very first “smartwatch” – the Haylou LS01 – which costs just ¥99 (~$14). The Chinese company is back with another smartwatch called the Haylou Solar and this too packs some really nice features matched with an affordable price tag.

Haylou Solar

The Haylou Solar has a round dial like a regular watch and Haylou says they have adopted a minimalist design that appeals to the younger generation. The screen is a 1.28 TFT color 240 x 240 display that is sharp and bright even under direct sunlight. It is surrounded by a metal frame and attached to it are 22mm silicone breathable straps that can be comfortably worn for long.

The Haylou Solar can track a total of 12 different physical activities:

  • Outdoor running
  • Walking
  • Mountain Climbing
  • Cycling
  • Elliptical training
  • Yoga
  • Treadmill running
  • Free training
  • Gymnastics
  • Basketball
  • Soccer
  • Rowing

The watch also has sleep tracking, a pedometer, a calorie counter, and a heart rate sensor for 24-hour heart rate monitoring. There is also a sedentary reminder, a stopwatch, a phone finder, support for music playback, weather alerts, breathing training, and support for app notification alerts.

The Haylou Solar has a 30-day battery life (340mAh) but it drops by half if 24-hour heart rate monitoring is turned on. While it is called the Haylou Solar, it doesn’t charge via solar but has charging pins at the back. The watch also has an IP68 rating which means you can take it swimming or wear it in the shower.

Chip Battle: Huawei’s Kirin 820 5G vs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G

The Kirin 820 5G is the latest 5G mid-range processor. Announced last week and appearing first in the spanking new Honor 30S, this chipset is one of Huawei’s most powerful processor. For this edition of Chip Battle, we want to see how it measures up to another mid-range 5G chipset – the Snapdragon 765G.

Kirin 820 5G vs Snapdragon 765G

CPU

The Kirin 820 5G is a 7nm chipset with a prime core (Cortex-A76) clocked at 2.36GHz and three performance cores (Cortex-A76) at 2.22GHz and four efficiency cores clocked at 1.84GHz.

For the Snapdragon 765G, we have a 7nm octa-core chipset too with a Kryo 475 Prime core (Cortex-A76) clocked at 2.4GHz, a Kryo 475 Gold core (Cortex-A76) clocked at 2.2GHz and six Kryo 475 Silver cores (Cortex-A55) clocked at 1.8GHz.

Just looking at the cores, one can see the Kirin 820 5G is the more powerful processor as it has four Cortex-A76 cores whereas the Snapdragon 765G has just two. However, for more practical evidence, below are benchmark results from Geekbench.

[envira-gallery id=”314838″]

As you can see, the Kirin 820 5G has significantly higher scores compared to the Snapdragon 765G (Redmi K30 5G).

Kirin 820 5G AnTuTu

Scores from AnTuTu are no different either as the Kirin 820 5G scored 130,080 points while the Snapdragon 765G scored 104,223 points.

GPU

The GPU of the Kirin 820 5G is a Mali-G57 with six cores while that of the Snapdragon 765G is the Adreno 620. According to the AnTuTu benchmark result above, the Mali-G57 is a more powerful GPU as it scored 116,516 points in the benchmark result as against the Adreno 620 which scored 92,536 points.

[envira-gallery id=”314843″]

In another AnTuTu test, the Kirin 820 5G scored 119,839 points (GPU) which is higher than the 93,977 points scored by the Snapdragon 765G-powered OPPO Reno3 Pro.

In the above benchmark result, the Honor 30S (Kirin 820 5G) doesn’t just floor the OPPO Reno3 Pro 5G (Snapdragon 765G) in CPU and GPU performance but also outshines it in the other areas too. Yes, we know the AnTuTu version numbers are not the same but even if they were, the Kirin 820 5G will still come out on top.

Others

In terms of connectivity, both processors support SA and NSA 5G networks. There is Bluetooth 5.0 on the Snapdragon 765G while the Kirin 820 5G has Bluetooth 5.1. With respect to GPS, the Kirin 820 5G doesn’t support NavIC, unlike the Snapdragon 765G which does.

Conclusion

The Kirin 820 5G is definitely one of the most powerful processors Huawei has ever made and no Qualcomm mid-range chipset can hold its own against it. However, we won’t be surprised if Qualcomm announces a new mid-range chipset later this year that surpasses the Kirin 820 5G. The San Diego-based semiconductor company is known for churning out new SoCs pretty frequently and it most likely already has one on the horizon.

[UPDATE: Xiaomi clarifies] Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro box inscription alludes to Huawei’s inability to use Google Services

UPDATE: A spokesperson for Xiaomi has released an official statement regarding the retail box inscription which has now generated lots of discussions both in China and even overseas. The statement hints that the inscription is actually one of the promotional requirements of its partner (Google) in the latest partnership agreement. The statement revealed that it is similar to the “Powered by Android” booth message and “Intel Inside” stickers that are stamped on Intel-powered laptops.

The reason why it appeared on Xiaomi’s smartphones first is that the Chinese company’s license recently expired and it had to renew the same with the partner which is no doubt Google. The Mi 10 Pro happened to be the first model to be released after the requirement went into effect, the statement hinted.

xiaomi clarification regarding mi 10 pro box
Official Clarification by Xiaomi in Chinese

The original story continues……..

Rival smartphone OEMs have several ways of trolling each other, especially when promoting their smartphones. We’ve seen Huawei take on Samsung or Apple but in recent times Xiaomi seems to have upped its game in trolling rival smartphone OEMs.  Xiaomi Mi 10 pro

The Chinese giant recently launched the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro model for the global market in Europe. While the models are already in the market, what many didn’t take note of is an inscription on the retail box of the Mi 10 Pro global version. The inscription just under the Mi 10 Pro branding reads, “with easy access to the Google apps you use most”. This is seen as a direct marketing strategy, taking a dig at Huawei whose smartphones which are very popular in Europe.Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro 5G

Of course, Huawei recently launched the P40 series which is a flagship model like the Mi 10 Pro. Sadly, the P40 series doesn’t come with Google services which would affect its market performance. Xiaomi is looking to improve on its growing popularity in Europe and it is no surprise the company will fight dirty in a bid to see that happen.

The Mi 10 Pro and Huawei P40 Pro seems to have similar starting prices of 999 Euros. So, both models are rivals in several aspects so, one can see where Xiaomi is looking at when drawing up the retail box campaign. In China, it doesn’t matter but in Europe, the presence of Google services will influence the sales of Xiaomi’s flagship.

Samsung: Exynos 990 is as powerful as Snapdragon 865

Samsung is one of the few smartphone makers to develop their own processors. Additionally, it is the only one to sell its premium flagship smartphones with two different processors – in-house Exynos and Qualcomm. However, there has always been a performance difference between the two. Now, as Galaxy S20 series is out, various media publications have confirmed the Exynos 990 to lag behind the Snapdragon 865 variant, however, Samsung says otherwise. In a statement to SamMobile, the South Korean tech giant reassures both the versions of their latest high-end smartphones to perform equally.

Samsung Exynos 990 featured

Samsung has been making Exynos chips for a very long time but they have mostly performed inferior to counterparts from Qualcomm. It becomes even more complicated as the company sells its flagship smartphones with both the chips in different regions although the device is priced similarly.

This has now led to tensions among fans as the latest Galaxy S20 series cost higher than the previous generations and only the US, China, and South Korea get the Snapdragon 865 variant, which is better than the Exynos 990 version sold in other markets.

Despite there being proofs all over the internet with reviews from reputed media that confirm the Exynos 990 to throttle performance while also being less power efficient, Samsung has released a statement saying both the variants of Galaxy S20 series have undergone the same rigorous tests and perform equally in real life.

Foldables may get Cheaper as Samsung Electronics plans to make its own Foldable Glass

In order to lower the price of foldable smartphones, Samsung Electronics is looking to manufacture foldable glass on its own. Until now, the company has been sourcing supplies from its sister company Samsung Display. If this plan goes as expected, the price of foldables may drop gradually making them affordable than ever before.

galaxy z flip

The current cheapest foldable smartphone by Samsung, the Galaxy Z Flip costs $1,400, which is not affordable in any way and even the company feels the same. The foldable glass used on this device has a thickness of 30 micrometers and costs $40 to make, compared to $2 for flat glass on normal phones.

The foldable glass, known as UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass), used in the Galaxy Z Flip is manufactured by DOWOO INSYS whose biggest shareholder is Samsung Display, who then incorporates its OLED panel with the glass and supplies the final product to Samsung Electronics. But if the phone maker can manufacture its own foldable glass, Samsung Electronics can compete directly with its sister company. This could lead to competition between other folding glass manufacturers over the years, eventually bringing down the cost.

In fact, Samsung Electronics is already in talks with multiple foldable glass manufacturers. However, it is not certain if the company will succeed in signing a deal but if it does, we can expect foldable smartphones to get cheaper in the coming years.
