Huawei Mate 30 is expected to ship 10 million units in the next few months

Huawei recently launched its flagship smartphones in the form of Huawei Mate 30 series, which has been very popular in its home market China. The phone went on sale last month, i.e. September and earlier this month, it was reported that the company managed to sell over a million units of the same.

Now, He Gang, President of Huawei’s Consumer Business and Mobile Product Line has said that the sale of flagship Huawei Mate 30 series is expected to reach 10 million units by the end of this year, before the Spring Festival.

Additionally, he has also revealed that the company’s total smartphone shipments are expected to be around 240-250 million for the current year. The 4G version of the Mate 30 series went on sale last month while the 5G variants are set to go on sale next month.

This seems like a major achievement for the company which has been hit by a ban by the United States, barring the company from using any technology from the US-based firms. That’s the reason Mate 30 series comes without support for Google apps and services.

While the lack of support isn’t a big deal for the Chinese market given that most Android phones in the region comes without support for Google Play services, access to Google apps and services is vital in other regions.

Despite the lack of access to Google, the company has started the international expansion of the Huawei Mate 30 series smartphones and is now being sold in some regions of Europe and in Malaysia.

He Gang has not revealed anything related to the sales forecast of the Huawei Mate X smartphone. He said that at this stage, the company is hoping to learn and understand the customer experience with the foldable smartphones.

For those who are unaware, Huawei has finally released its much-awaited Mate X foldable smartphone in China which will go on sale from 15th November. The Kirin 990 SoC powered variant of the Mate X will be launched in March next year.

Realme smartphones will be getting exclusively customized ColorOS 7

Realme started off as a sub-brand of OPPO but soon after its formation, the company split from the parent company to operate independently. Starting operations from India, Realme has now established presence in several regions.

Although it is an independent brand, Realme is using a lot of resources from OPPO to keep its operations going. One of them is ColorOS, a custom Android skin from Chinese smartphone maker OPPO, which is also being used by Realme.

Realme new logo

There were reports making rounds about Realme working on its own operating system named RealmeOS based on Android, which will look very close to the stock Android. When the company announced a closed beta testing for the Realme 3 Pro users in India, it was assumed to be for the upcoming RealmeOS.

Madhav Sheth has confirmed that the company’s smartphones will have an execlusive customized version of the ColorOS 7 that will be similar to the stock Android in terms of user interface. However, he has not shared more information about the same.

In the same AskMadhav Q&A session, he also confirmed that the company’s smartphones with quad-camera setup — Realme 5, 5 Pro, and XT will be getting video recording support with the ultra wide camera lens. He also hinted about the Realme Fitness Tracker getting launched in India pretty soon.

Coming to the upcoming ColorOS 7, there’s noting known about this custom user interface at this time. However, OPPO Vice President recently confirmed that the OPPO Reno 10X Zoom will be getting the ColorOS 7, which was also the first official confirmation from the Chinese company about the existence of ColorOS 7.

Samsung Galaxy S10 starts getting update to fix fingerprint recognition issue

A story emerged last week that the Galaxy S10 fingerprint can be unlocked by an unregistered fingerprint when a sub-standard screen protector was attached. The story rattled the headlines when it emerged last week. Apparently, the issue also affected the Galaxy Note 10 series.samsung galaxy s10 plus

Samsung promised to push a fix for the issue soon and that is already happening. The update is said to be hitting Galaxy S10 and Note 10 units in South Korea. We expect a global rollout to happen pretty soon.

The software flaw was first reported by a British woman whose Galaxy S10 unit was successfully unlocked by her husband’s thumbprint after fixing a cheap screen protector on the device. The lady had bought a £2.70 gel screen protector on eBay and then noticed her left thumbprint, which was not registered could also unlock the phone. Both of her husband’s thumbs could also unlock the phone. The same scenario played out when the screen protector was added to another relative’s phone which we believe is also a Galaxy S10.

The scanner sends ultrasounds to detect 3D ridges of fingerprints in order to recognise users. Samsung explained the problem by noting that the ultrasonic fingerprint was mistakenly “recognizing 3-dimensional patterns appearing on certain silicone screen protecting cases as users’ fingerprints.”

Samsung announces 7nm EUV Exynos 990 flagship processor

Samsung has announced a brand new mobile processor called the Exynos 990. Based on the name, this is a more powerful processor than the Exynos 980 that was announced in early September, and its specs put it in the flagship category.

Exynos 990 featured

The Exynos 990 is a 7nm EUV processor just like Huawei’s Kirin 990 5G chipset. The processor has eight cores in a 2+2+4 tri-cluster CPU configuration. There are 2x 5th-generation custom CPU cores + 2x Cortex-A76 cores + 4x Cortex-A55 cores. Samsung is keeping the clockspeed of the cores a mystery. However, it does say the custom CPU cores performance has increased by 20% compared to its predecessor.

The new processor has a Mali-G77 MP11 GPU which replaces the Mali-G76 MP12 GPU of the Exynos 9820. The new GPU provides an improvement in performance or power efficiency of up to 20% compared to its predecessor. With the new GPU, Samsung promises lag-free gaming.

The Exynos 990 also has a Dual-Core NPU, an extra core more than the Exynos 9820’s NPU. There is also an improved Digital Signal Processor (DSP) which works with the new NPU for better experiences when it comes to camera performance, virtual assistant, and extended reality. The SoC supports up to six cameras with resolutions up to 108MP.

Samsung Exynos 990 + Exynos 5123 Modem

The Exynos 990 supports LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.0 and UFS 2.1 storage, and displays with up to 4K UHD resolution. It has an Exynos Modem 5123 for hyper-fast 5G speeds. Samsung says the new modem supports up to 7.35Gbps download speeds in mmWave and 5.1Gbps in sub-6GHz setting with up to 8x carrier aggregation. The new modem which is also built on the 7nm EUV process supports E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) which “combines LTE and 5G connectivity to increase mobile download speed”.

Exynos 990 specs

Samsung’s latest processor supports 8K UHD video decoding at 30 frames per second. It also has a 120Hz refresh-rate driver display (you can clap here) alongside 10-bit video and HDR display support. Security has also been improved with a newly added integrated Security Element (iSE) layer that stores and handles personal data in a separate space from the OS.

The Exynos 990 should power Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S11 series phones scheduled for next year.

Huawei brings EMUI 10 Public Beta to Mate 20 family of devices

Earlier today we reported that the Huawei Mate 20 Pro received the latest stable version of Huawei’s EMUI based on Android 10. While it does bring with it a brand new Android version, the device is still stuck on EMUI 9, which leaves out features from EMUI 10 Public Beta like the new dark mode and all the new productivity features.

Now however, it seems like that’s no longer a problem as Huawei’s bringing the EMUI 10 Public Beta to the Huawei Mate 20 family of devices. This includes devices like the Huawei Mate 20, Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design, Huawei Mate 20 X (4G). It’s important to note that this update is only for Chinese users who signed up for the beta.

On top of this, Honor devices are also getting a public beta update. The new Honor update will bring all eligible devices and users up to Magic UI 3.0, which brings a magazine interface, dark mode and multi-screen multitasking between devices. It’s essentially the EMUI 10 update under a different name. The Honor devices that will be receiving the Magic UI 3.0 update are the Honor 20, Honor 20 PRO, Honor V20, and Honor Magic 2.

They are incredible devices not only for their specifications but also because they are phones able to take advantage of all the most recent and advanced features based on artificial intelligence. The Pixel 4 XL is the most powerful model of the series and given the impact that the new line-up had at Google’s event, we decided to compare it with the actual most advanced Android phones in the market: Huawei Mate 30 Pro and Samsung Galaxy Note 10+. Does it make sense to grab a Google device instead of a flagship from the most important smartphone brands? This comparison will clear your ideas.

Design

I am not a fan of Google Pixel 4’s design. It has a very thick bezel on the upper part without even boasting a notch, and that iPhone 11-like square camera module on the back never convinced me. I appreciate much more the aesthetics of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro which boasts a Horizon display with side touch and no physical keys, as well as an original round-shaped camera module on the back. But the most minimalistic phone here is the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ with its full borderless punch-hole display and a very clean glass back. However, the Galaxy Note 10+ is definitely too big for an average user. That is why Huawei Mate 30 Pro is more special.

Display

Due to the support of the HDR10+ standard, the S Pen, very high color accuracy and a wide 6.8-inch diagonal, I would choose the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ without thinking twice, if I had to choose the best display. But the Google Pixel 4 XL is still amazing with its 90 Hz refresh rate and full DCI-P3 coverage, as well as the HDR support. Huawei Mate 30 Pro is inferior due to its Full HD+ resolution and its lower color accuracy, but it still provides a great display for a flagship.

Hardware/Software

Despite Snapdragon 855+ has been in the market for a while, Google decided to equip the Pixel 4 and the Pixel 4 XL with the older Snapdragon 855. Even the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ in its U.S. version is fueled by the Snapdragon 855. Huawei Mate 30 Pro has a more recent Kirin 990 chipset and it guarantees better performance than Snapdragon 855. Further, the Kirin 990 is the first chipset with an (optional) integrated 5G modem, so 5G connectivity guarantees better performance in case you choose the 5G variant. But it is not all about the chipset: there is also the RAM. Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ has 12 GB of RAM, while Mate 30 Pro has just 8 GB. Further, the European version has a different chipset: Exynos 9825, and up to 512 GB of internal storage, unlike the Mate 30 Pro which stops at 256 GB. So, at the end of the day, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ wins the hardware comparison. Google Pixel 4 XL is better when it comes to the software since it has Android 10 out of the box and more advanced features.

Camera

Huawei Mate 30 wins the camera comparison with a quad camera setup composed of two 40 MP sensors, a TOF camera, and a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. It provides the most astonishing camera quality with excellent and professional detail in every scene, as well as an amazing quality in low light conditions. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ has a better selfie camera. Google Pixel 4 XL is still an amazing camera phone, but not at the same level as the Huawei Mate 30 Pro.

Battery

The bigger battery, the Full HD+ display, and the Kirin 990 chipset allow the Huawei Mate 30 Pro to last more on a single charge than Google Pixel 4 XL. It lasts more or less like the Galaxy Note 10+, but the latter seems to provide a longer battery life in some important scenarios thanks to better software optimization.

Price

Google Pixel 4 XL costs €999/$899 globally, Huawei Mate 30 Pro starts from €1099/$1225, and Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ from €1129/$1099. Overall, the winner of the comparison is the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ due to its better display, long battery life and S Pen support, but we think Huawei Mate 30 Pro is a better camera phone.

Xiaomi’s new crowdfunding product is the Mi Projector Vogue Edition

Xiaomi has another new product from the depths of their crowdfunding service, and today’s new product is a projector. The Xiaomi Mi Projector Vogue Edition comes from third-party Xiaomi partner Fengmi, who specialize in the production of projectors. Pricing begins at 3699 yuan ($522), which really isn’t too bad for the features on offer.

Previously Fengmi had released the standard Mi Projector, which was a bulky, chunky box that focused mainly on quality. It had a high price tag, and wasn’t really suitable for the standard consumer, which is where the Vogue Edition comes in. It’s a smaller, weaker projector that’s intended for general audience to use.

In line with this idea, the Mi Projector Vogue Edition eschews a few of the features from its more powerful brother. 4K video projecting is gone, with 1080p projecting taking its place.  The brightness has also been toned down from a staggering 9000 ANSI lumens to a more modest 1500 ANSI lumens. It’s still brighter than most though, which is good.

The Mi Projector Vogue Edition comes with Fengmi’s own FAV (Feng AdvancedVideo) image optimizations. It helps with the brightness, color gamut, sharpness, skin color reproduction, HDR display and HDMI output quality. It can achieve brightness levels to up to 1500 ANSI lumens when in highlight mode. It comes with over 85% NTSC’s wide color gamut and the colour performance is rich and vivid.

It uses an upgraded graphics edge processing algorithm which can effectively distinguish the edge and details of the image object for processing. This also enhances the image clarity. The projector is also optimized for lower latency when bring streamed through HDMI. This represents a 50% improvement over previous products.

The Mi Projector Vogue Edition uses a high-performance T972 chip with a maximum frequency of 1.9GHz. This reduces power consumption by 55%. It also supports 8K video decoding. For software, it runs the same version of MIUI that comes on Xiaomi’s MiTVs. This means users can customize Smart Patchwall depending on their viewing habits.

Xiaomi’s Smart Rubik’s Cube helps you solve the cube, also controls smart home gadgets

Xiaomi has launched a smart Rubik’s Cube under crowdfunding on Mi Mall. Rubik’s Cube is a 3-D combination puzzle invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. Originally called the Magic Cube, the puzzle was licensed by Rubik to be sold by Ideal Toy Corp. The new Xiaomi smart Rubik’s cube comes with some smart features and adopts a crowdfunding price of just 79 yuan ($11). Mi Smart Rubik's Cube
In term of appearance, itis similar to the ordinary Rubik’s cube in terms of appearance but has a more concave feel than the ordinary Rubik’s cube. That is because it uses a magnetic positioning design on the interior as well as a smooth body structure which makes it neither get stuck nor fall apart.Mi Smart Rubik's Cube

The most spectacular aspect which differentiates the Mi Rubik’s cube from the regular ones is that it has a six-axis sensing system which aids in the automatic capture of every rotation and color change. Real-time data synchronization can be realized by connecting the device to a mobile phone via Bluetooth. Of course, there is a dedicated Rubik’s Cube app which we believe is compatible with Android and iOS. The app can calculate the process to solve the cube and also guide users through the process. Even in cases when you make a mistake, the smart app can re-plan the path to solving the cube for you. The Smart Rubik’s Cube app is equipped with 9 different gaming levels with varying degree of difficulty. This helps in a way to challenge the spatial thinking and skills of the user.Mi Smart Rubik's Cube

At the same time, the app also has a timing function, which records the time, steps and speed from the start of the rotation to the completion of the solution.

The Mi Smart Rubik’s Cube gets its power from a replaceable button battery which supports pairing the device with the app for up to 1 hour daily. That is because it has a low power design. The button battery can last up to 1 year.

Another interesting feature of the Mi Rubik’s Cube is that it can be paired with the MIJIA app and connected with any smart home gadget via Bluetooth. When it is paired, you can control your smart home products as you like by turning the Rubik’s Cube. This will be fun if paired with the Yeelight Smart bulb so the bulb changes colour with each move.

We expect the product to become available outside China soon.

Can’t get the Microsoft Duo? LG G8X is your next best bet for dual screens

You might have your eyes on the Microsoft Duo, but that’s not coming anytime soon. So what if you really want a brand new dual screen device, and you want it now? LG has you covered with their latest device, the LG G8X ThinQ. It’s essentially just a slightly changed version of the LG G8, but this time it comes with a Dual Screen case.

The G8X ThinQ is a unique take on a dual-screen phone. Instead of using a foldable screen, like Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, or attaching an entire second screen with a hinge, like Microsoft’s upcoming Surface Duo, LG just made a normal phone with one screen. The second screen is based entirely within a case that the G8X slips into.

The phone itself has a 6.4-inch 1080p OLED display. The Dual Screen case adds a second 6.4-inch 1080p OLED, as well as a 2.1-inch monochrome display on the outside. It’s plenty powerful, too, with a Snapdragon 855 chipset, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 4,000mAh battery. Even though it’s launching in November, it will come with Android 9 Pie out of the box instead of the newer Android 10.

Available in the US starting November 1st, the G8X ThinQ will arrive as a bundle with the LG Dual Screen accessory, starting at the price of $699. Using a USB-C connector, the combo offers up a number of different dual-screen experiences, including a standard two screen, a game pad and a keyboard, working as a sort of mini-laptop.

The phone has a 12MP f/1.8 primary rear camera while a 13MP f/2.4 super wide-angle camera is the second sensor. Its selfie camera is a 32MP f/1.9 sensor. The LG G8 ThinQ has features such as Night View, 4K Time Lapse, AI Action Shot, Cine Shot, and Studio Mode.

Other features are an in-display fingerprint scanner, 2.4W stereo speaker, dedicated Google Assistant button, DTS:X Surround Sound, IP68 water and dust resistance, and a 4000mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 3.0.

In the following weeks LG will then bring the LG G 8X ThinQ to more key markets, including Brazil, Japan, Germany, Mexico, Spain and Turkey. A full list of countries has yet to be revealed, so stay tuned for that.
