Redmi K20 and K20 Pro launch rehearsal reveals more details

Tomorrow, Redmi will be announcing the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro as its first K-series flagship killer smartphones. Apparently, Redmi just couldn’t wait to tell us more about the device first however. Xiaomi‘s very own Lei Jun has revealed more details straight from the Redmi K20 launch rehearsals. These do confirm a few of our suspicions regarding the device, so let’s take a closer look.

First off, we learn that the Redmi K20 and K20 Pro are internally called “The Big Devil”. We also learn that the small dinosaur featured prominently on marketing material is also the Big Devil. This is mainly just hilarious to us. We’ve also got confirmation that there are two variants, the Redmi K20 and K20 Pro. The normal Redmi K20 runs a Snapdragon 730 SoC, while the Redmi K20 Pro comes with the Snapdragon 855.

Both versions of the device come with a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2340×1080. As for other internals, it seems like both devices will have 8GB of RAM + 256GB of storage. Keeping everything running is a nice 4000mAh battery, though we’ve known that for quite a while now. They both also have identical designs, as expected.

We also get to see a variety of cases for the new device. The three cases are snap-on shell cases, and they’re decorated with the little Big Devil dinosaur. There are three colours available, those being red, purple and yellow. The covers are also relatively inexpensive at only 39 yuan, which roughly translates to about $6.

If you’d like to get a better idea of what’s coming up tomorrow, you can check out our Redmi K20 and K20 Pro round-up over here. As for now, all we can really do is wait for the grand launch tomorrow. Whether the device lives up to the lofty expectations we have remains to be seen. Redmi Note 7 breaks 10 million sales in 129 days

The Redmi K20 may be coming tomorrow, but Xiaomi still has other things to celebrate before that. The Redmi Note 7 series has successfully sold over 10 million units, and it managed to do it in a mere 129 days! This is a massive milestone for Xiaomi, though a key thing to note is that this is total sales across all Redmi Note 7 variants.

Xiaomi co-founder Lei Jun shared the good news on Weibo, later followed by photos sharing a celebratory cake with all the key executives of the company and its sub-brand. Jun said the milestone is a victory and a testament of “holding Xiaomi values, such as high quality and value for your money”.

There is no info yet on the number of Redmi 7 phones sold but we won’t be surprised if it is also flying off shelves. Xiaomi’s golden ratio of price, design and performance seems to be at its peak, and it’s clearly paying off. We’re curious how Redmi plans to top themselves after this with the next Redmi Note devices.

Lei Jun also took some time to remind everyone about the upcoming Redmi K20 launch tomorrow. With the Redmi Note 7 series doing so well around the world, we’re eager to see how the Redmi K20 will turn out. Will it garner the same positive reaction, and how will the higher price work out? We’ll have to wait until tomorrow’s launch event to find out.

Meizu 16Xs: Triple camera or 48MP? Why not both?

Meizu has been actively teasing their upcoming Meizu 16XS for the past week, and there’s still more that they want to show. Today’s teaser is about the device’s camera, but it doesn’t actually tease what the device actually has. Instead, it poses a question. Will the Meizu 16Xs have a 48MP camera like the Redmi Note 7S, or a triple camera setup like the OnePlus 7 Pro?

Both of these options are in vogue at the moment, with most companies going one way or the other. From the leaked specs however, we already know that device actually features both setups. The rear camera setup is a 48MP + 5MP + 8MP triple camera system, basically combining the two into one setup.

Interestingly, this would mean Meizu wants the 16Xs to go head to head with the Redmi Note 7s. Everything from the large 4000mAh battery to the 48MP + triple rear camera setup are all intended to show up the hot selling Redmi Note 7 series. So far, Meizu’s got a pretty decent showing, though we’ll have to wait until the 30th to hand out a verdict.

Meizu 16Xs Specifications

The smartphone houses a 6.2-inch AMOLED display. The notch-less display is equipped with slimmer bezels and it carries support for a tall aspect ratio of 18.5:9. The display carries support for full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2232 pixels. The AMOLED panel is embedded with an in-screen fingerprint reader.

The Meizu 16X from 2018 was fueled by the Snapdragon 710 chipset. The TENAA listing of the Meizu 16Xs reveals that it is powered by an octa-core processor that works at 2 GHz. The SoC is supported by 6 GB of RAM and it comes with a native storage of 64 GB. There is no support for expandable storage on the device.

The predecessor model came with a 3,100mAh battery. The Meizu 16Xs will arrive with a significant improvement in the battery department since it will be equipped with a 4,000mAh capacity battery. There is no confirmation on whether the phone will come with support for rapid charging technology.

The Android 9 Pie OS will come preloaded on the device. It will be customized with the latest version of Flyme UI. The rear shell of the phone will be featuring a 48-megapixel + 5-megapixel + 8-megapixel triple camera system. For shooting selfies, it will be sporting a 16-megapixel front camera.

In other words, the X90 Twilight comes in handy for watching the moon, watching the planet, watching the city and even watching the scenery. Its main mirror comes with a larger diameter to give you a higher amount of light while offering a clearer view with better lens coating.

Moreover, it has the Prosperity (PL) eyepiece that enables you to see the sky clearly in a wide field of view. The 600mm long focal length cylinder gives the telescope a higher effective magnification, while the metal painted surface gives the lens barrel more durability. The FMC multi-layered broadband coating, on the other hand, minimizes the light loss, enabling you to see the father sky.

The XA90 Twilight would normally set you back $491.01, but you can now buy the white color version of this astronomical telescope for a dropped price of only $279.99 from Gearbest. This is a significant 43 percent drop in the telescope’s original asking price.

Regrettably, there were only 214 pieces remaining at the time of writing. It is also worth mentioning here that the promo is slated to end in just four days. You can follow this link to avail the discount.

First Snapdragon 665 phone rumored to launch on May 30

The Snapdragon 665 launched alongside the Snapdragon 730 and Snapdragon 730G. Unlike the Snapdragon 730, we are yet to see a manufacturer announce a phone with the new Snapdragon 600 series chipset. However, that may change by May 30.

Snapdragon 665

According to a tweet by Sudhanshu Ambhore (@Sudhanshu1414), the first Snapdragon 665-powered device will be unveiled on May 30 which is just a few days from now. Although he didn’t reveal the manufacturer, Meizu is the only phone maker with a launch scheduled for that day which is for the Meizu 16Xs.

The Meizu 16Xs, according to TENAA, is powered by an octa-core chipset clocked at 2.0GHz. The Snapdragon 665 is also an 8-core processor with a 2.0GHz clock speed. If the Meizu 16Xs is indeed powered by the Snapdragon 665, it is a downgrade in terms of performance from its predecessor.

The Meizu 16X is powered by the Snapdragon 710, which not only uses more powerful Kryo 360 cores compared to the SD665’s Kryo 260 cores but also has a smaller node (10nm) as against the SD665’s 11nm node.

The Snapdragon 665 comes with an Adreno 610 AIE GPU, an AI Engine with support for 3D Face Unlock and AI features that are 2x faster than that of the Snapdragon 660. It supports Bluetooth 5.0, USB 3.1, 4K video recording, slow-motion recording up to 120fps at 1080p and also Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging technology.

Xiaomi launches a Makeup Mirror that doubles as a power bank

Xiaomi has launched a portable power bank that also has the features of a makeup mirror. The product isn’t manufactured directly by Xiaomi but by one of its ecological chain companies. The power bank and mirror are combined in one and comes with a dimension of 85x76x17mm, making it portable enough to fit into a lady’s handbag. The gadget is even affordable as it is priced at 129 yuan (~$18).

The power bank is designed to deliver emergency power as it is just a 3000mAh battery with 5V/1A input and output.xiaomi portable mirror

The makeup mirror is surrounded by 12 high-brightness LED lamp beads which emit a colour temperature and light that simulates natural light, making the fill light uniform and natural. The brightness can be adjusted according to the level the user wants, which in turn is dependent on the level of illumination of the environment. The makeup mirror also has 2x magnifying glass design. Thus, despite the portable size, the objects are much clearer without any distortion.

When the button is pressed for a short time, the fill light will slowly turn on after 1 second, and the adjustment from low brightness to high brightness will be completed within 3 seconds. After releasing the hand, press the button again, and the light will slowly darken after 1 second. The adjustment from the highest brightness to the lowest brightness is completed within 3 seconds. If the mirror is closed, the fill light is automatically turned off.

When the battery power left gets to 10%, the mirror illuminating light beads automatically turns off, while the mirror turns into a portable small mirror. However, the fill light function can still be used for about 1 hour to continuously illuminate your makeup session.

Redmi K20 series reported to launch as Mi 9T series in Poland

The Redmi K20 series has been confirmed to arrive in India. However, it is still unknown if it will be arriving in other countries. A new report says it will arrive in Poland but under a different name; a name that is familiar if you have been following the news.

Redmi K20 press render

According to a Polish blog, Spiders Web, the Redmi K20 series will make its way to Poland but as Xiaomi-branded devices. The blog was specific about the names too – the Redmi K20 will launch as the Mi 9T while the Redmi K20 Pro will be sold as the Mi 9T Pro.

The blog refused to mention the source of the information but claimed it is a very credible one. They also mentioned that a release date is currently unknown but did say their prices will be similar to that of the Mi 9 SE and the Mi 9. We do not think this means they will have the same prices but rather share the same price difference.

The Mi 9T name isn’t new as it was spotted last week at Thailand’s certification agency as well as Taiwan and Singapore’s agencies too. This is an indication that Poland will not be the only country where the Redmi K20 will launch as the Mi 9T.

The Redmi K20 will come with a Snapdragon 730 processor while the Redmi K20 Pro will have the Snapdragon 855. Both phones will have a pop-up selfie camera, triple rear cameras, a 4000mAh battery with support for fast-charging, an audio jack, Hi-Res audio, dual-frequency GPS, NFC, and a notch-free AMOLED display with a 7th-gen in-display fingerprint scanner.

Did OnePlus lie about the OnePlus 7 Pro 3x optical zoom?

OnePlus has allegedly been caught exaggerating the 3x optical zoom on its latest flagship, the OnePlus 7 Pro, which was proven to be closer to a 2.2x zoom. Android Police reports that the triple camera set up actually crops the 2.2x zoom to bring it to the three-fold zoom promised in the product specs, though that means the focal length is not the same.

A couple of users have discovered that the OnePlus 7 Pro has a wider field of view in portrait mode than in 3X zoom mode. The smartphone uses only the telephoto lens to shoot in portrait mode. So if it truly does 3X optical zoom, there shouldn’t be any difference in the field of view for both modes. You can see the effect in real time over here.

The OnePlus 7 Pro telephoto camera is a 13MP sensor (SK53M5). But OnePlus advertises the telephoto camera as offering 8MP 3x optical zoom. In other words, OnePlus is using the sensor’s native 2.2x zoom factor for portraits but cropping the sensor’s output for 3x zoom. In a statement to Android Central, the company steered clear of calling it “3x optical zoom,” saying it achieves 3x zoom with “no digital zoom or loss of detail.”

The OnePlus 7 Pro has 3x zoom with no digital zoom or loss of detail. The telephoto camera serves two main purposes: 3x zoom and portrait mode photography. It will switch the field of view depending on the camera mode. With 3x zoom, the telephoto camera delivers the advertised lossless 8 megapixels images. Portrait mode utilizes all 13 megapixels from the sensor in the telephoto camera.

So what’s going on here? According to Digital Camera World, OnePlus appears to be using a “composite of image data” from the 48MP sensor and the optical zoom lens to create its digital shots. We have no way to test this at the moment, but it seems fairly accurate. This sets it apart from technologies like Hybrid Zoom, which use superresolution and upscaling techniques that are very different from OnePlus’ crop.

The results are clearly pretty good, even Dx0mark agrees, but it’s debatable whether OnePlus should be advertising the phone with 3x optical zoom or a 3x telephoto camera. Huawei generally avoids this for its phones, promoting the native zoom factor (3x or 5x) and using “hybrid zoom” branding otherwise.

It is worth pointing out that this isn’t the first time OnePlus has messed up its camera claims. The OnePlus 5 was initially perceived to be doing 2X optical zoom but it was later clarified that the device was doing 1.6X optical zoom and the remaining 0.4X was done through smart capture multi-frame technology.

OnePlus is adamant that there’s no dishonesty on its part and that the 3x zoom provides full lossless quality. The quality part is true — there’s no digital zoom or quality degradation going on. Do you think OnePlus is still able to claim 3X Optical Zoom because it has no loss of detail? Let us know in the comments below.

Huawei still has a year’s worth of chips stockpiled

Things are extremely hectic between the US and China, and Huawei is still stuck in the epicenter of all of it. While the US ban has had fairly harrowing effects on the company, they’ve also been prepared for it and have take countermeasures against it. One of these countermeasures apparently was to buy enough chip stocks to last them an entire year.

Huawei

Huawei had informed its global suppliers six months ago that it wanted to build up a stock of crucial components that would last for up to a year, in preparation for trade war uncertainties. The Chinese giant was also making moves to secure new sources that wouldn’t be affected by a US embargo. Another option in the works is to ramp up efforts at becoming more self-reliant, which may bear fruit fairly soon.

Plans cut across several key components, extending beyond chips to include passive components and optical parts. For some components that are subject to higher risks of export controls, Huawei has stockpiled six months’ to more than a year’s worth of supply, while holding at least three months’ worth of less crucial ones, the sources said.

Analysts claim that the impact of Huawei’s absence from the chip market will be harder to estimate after this quarter. That is because the company could find itself doing business as usual if the U.S. and China agree to a new trade pact; just the other day, President Donald Trump said that the U.S. might use the “dangerous” Huawei as a bargaining chip to extract better terms from China during future trade negotiations.

In addition, Huawei which is currently the world’s second-largest smartphone vendor reportedly started certifying more chips, optical components, camera-related technologies and other parts suppliers based outside the US at the beginning of this year. The US may also try to get allies to get companies domiciled in their countries to ban sales of components to Huawei.

What Huawei has to be concerned with is what it will do in the future after using up all of the components it has stockpiled. If the ban doesn’t get lifted, Huawei WILL eventually run out of parts to use, and when that happens, things will be pretty grim for the company. This is just another battlefield in the lingering US-China Trade war, though we hope Huawei comes out of this one OK.

OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T will get updated to Android Q; Fnatic Mode, RAM Boost and more coming too

The OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T are the latest devices to get updated to Android Pie. This update is the third major OS update for both phones. Technically, they are the only two Android phones to have received three major OS updates. Yesterday, OnePlus confirmed the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T will also receive three OS updates in total.

OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T

The OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T were announced in 2017, though months apart. Both phones ran Android Nougat out of the box and then got updated to Android Oreo and Android Pie. Now OnePlus says they will also get an update to Android Q. The announcement was made in a forum post that listed the software features of the OnePlus 7 series coming to older OnePlus devices.

The post revealed that the OnePlus 5 series and the OnePlus 6 series will get Fnatic Mode, Zen Mode and Screen recorder (already available via sideloading), Quick Reply in Landscape, DC Dimming, and RAM Boost. OnePlus then added that the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T will also get Android Q. However, there are no ETAs yet.

For those wondering, rest assured: Android Q will also make its way to the OnePlus 5 and 5T – OnePlus

This is definitely exciting news for owners of the OnePlus 5 series. Both phones mark the end and the beginning of two design eras. The OP5 was the last OnePlus phone with a 16:9 aspect ratio while the OP5T was the first with an 18:9 aspect ratio and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. They are both powered by the Snapdragon 835, have dual rear cameras, pack 3300mAh batteries and support 20W fast-charging.

Redmi Go may get a new storage variant in India

The Redmi Go is the first Android Go device from Redmi/Xiaomi. The phone launched a few months ago and has made its way to various markets. Like most Android Go phones, it has just 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. However, there is a dedicated MicroSD card slot and support for adoptable storage.

Nevertheless, it appears Redmi may launch a new variant with more storage, according to a new teaser. Earlier today, the official Redmi Twitter account shared a teaser hinting at a new variant with more storage.

A translation of the tweet says “More space = More photos”. The tweet also uses the same hashtag #ApkiNayiDuniya as the one used when the Redmi Go was about to launch, hence the deduction that the Redmi Go will be getting a new storage variant. We are not sure what the new storage capacity will be but we presume it will likely be 16GB. We hope Redmi launches a new color variant too since the phone only comes in two colors.

The Redmi Go has a 5-inch HD display. It is powered by the Snapdragon 425 processor, supports storage expansion (up to 128GB) via a MicroSD card, has an 8MP rear camera, and a 5MP front-facing camera. There is a 3000mAh battery under the hood, a MicroUSB port, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Poster reveals Redmi K20 is powered by Snapdragon 730, shows off Blue variant

The Redmi K20 series arrives on Tuesday, May 28, and we are pretty excited here at Gizmochina. The flagship killer will come with tons of features which will be matched with an affordable price tag.

We already know there will be two phones – the Redmi K20 and the Redmi K20 Pro. While it has already been confirmed that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor will power the flagship killer, Redmi itself hasn’t been specific if it is both phones or just one of them. It is a no-brainer that the K20 Pro will be the one with the flagship chipset, and now a poster has revealed the chipset in the non-pro model.

According to the poster which was seen at a Mi store, the Redmi K20 will be powered by the Snapdragon 730 processor just like Samsung’s Galaxy A80. The 8nm chipset was announced by Qualcomm in April alongside the Snapdragon 665 and Snapdragon 730G. The Snapdragon 730 is an octa-core chipset with a 2+6 Kryo 460 core arrangement. It also has Qualcomm’s Hexagon Tensor accelerator, a Hexagon 688 DSP, Adreno 618 GPU, and a computer vision ISP that allows you to record 4K HDR videos with bokeh effect.

The poster also confirms the Redmi K20 will come with a full-screen display with a pop-up selfie camera and a 48MP triple rear camera setup. It also confirms it will have a 7th-gen in-display fingerprint scanner and a 4000mAh battery.

Other than key specs, we now know the Redmi K20 will come in two color variants – red and blue. We already saw an official image of the red variant earlier this week but do you know the photo isn’t a render? We didn’t too. Not until today thanks to a tweet by Donovan Sung, the director of product management at Xiaomi.
