Xiaomi suspends Redmi 6, Redmi 6A and Redmi S2 Android Pie update

Xiaomi isn’t really great at updating the Android version of its phones as it mainly focuses on MIUI. In recent times it has tried to provide at least one Android version update for its lineup. All three phones launched last year with Android 8.1 Oreo with a planned upgrade to Android Pie. However, the list of Xiaomi devices getting various OS upgrades has now been updated to reflect that plans have been changed and the update to Android P has now been suspended for the three phones.

VLC lifts ban from Huawei devices, users can download the app again

If you remember, VideoLAN blacklisted Huawei devices from downloading VLC player from the Play Store due to aggressive background task management methods. It resulted in various bugs and caused instability, finally resulting in random crashes generating negative reviews on the Play Store.

huawei vlc

After Huawei’s decision to kill the aggressive optimizing app, VLC unbanned Huawei devices on the Play Store. Including various optimizations, Huawei devices are still lingering by some minor issues while using the VLC media player app. We hope with the ban lift these minor issues will also fade away on Huawei devices.

China to require all short video apps to roll out anti-addiction parental controls

With the popularity of short video apps surging, a lot of issues have also started surfacing online. In the latest move to curb the issue of addiction among users, China’s watchdog will now require all major short video platforms in China to roll out “anti-addiction” parental controls by the end of May.

TikTok

According to the reports, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) has been testing the system on popular short video apps such as Bytedance’s Douyin, Huoshan Short Video, and Tencent-backed Kuaishou. It allows parents to turn on a “youth mode” feature that restricts minors to 40 minutes of usage per day and disables activities such as gift-giving or account top-up.

The development comes as China-based regulators are becoming increasingly vigilant about the amount of screen time minors are exposed to, a topic that is bearing increasing scrutiny across the globe.

A report from Chinese state media says that the children who stay behind in rural areas while their parents work in big cities were especially obsessed with online entertainment. Apps in China can also collect personal information from minors.

In India, Madras High Court banned the TikTok app and on Monday, the Supreme Court refused to put a stay order on the ban. Now, the government of India has asked Google and Apple to take down the popular short-video mobile application TikTok from their app stores. Short video apps have come under fire not only in India but also in the US, UK, Hong Kong, and Indonesia for content that is often dangerous or inappropriate for children.

Mysterious Redmi Snapdragon 730 phone with pop-up selfie camera and triple cameras could be coming

Redmi has recently launched Redmi Note 7, Note 7 Pro and Redmi 7 smartphones in China. However, the Redmi fans are eagerly waiting for arrival of Snapdragon 855 chipset powered phone. Xiaomi executives have been recently teasing an alleged Redmi phone with pop-up selfie camera. While the rumor mill has been speculating that it could be the highly anticipated Snapdragon 855 SoC powered Redmi flagship phone, fresh speculations claim that it could be a Redmi smartphone powered by the new Snapdragon 730 chipset.

The Samsung Galaxy A80 that comes with a rotating triple camera setup is the world’s first phone to be powered by Qualcomm’s all new 8nm Snapdragon 730 mobile platform. The Galaxy A80 is expected to release in the Chinese markets. It appears that one of its major competitors could be the mysterious Snapdragon 730 driven Redmi phone.

Redmi SD730 phone leak 1

Leaked information reveals that the smartphone will be packed with a 4,000mAh battery. Since it will be an upper mid-range phone, it is very likely to carry support for rapid charging. For photography, the smartphone is likely to sport 48-megapixel + 8-megapixel + 13-megapixel triple camera setup. It remains to be seen whether the phone will feature the very same triple camera setup that is available on the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE smartphone.

The leaked image that shows the phone placed inside a protective case confirms that it will be featuring a 3.5mm audio jack and a pop-up selfie camera. This indicates that the phone will be equipped with a notch-less display. Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing had recently claimed that the upcoming Redmi phone with Snapdragon 855 SoC does not feature a pop-up selfie camera. Hence, the phone shown in the above image is a different device.

Redmi SD730 phone leak 2

The notch-less Redmi phone with SD730 onboard seems to be very the same phone that was recently revealed by Xiaomi Product Director Wang Teng Thomas. He shared an image that showed the mysterious Redmi phone with Xiaomi Co-founder and President Lin Bin.

It is difficult to speculate the name of the device. It may not be the Redmi Y3/S3 smartphone that will be unveiled in India on April 24 in India. Probably, the new Redmi SD730 fueled phone may go official before the company launches the Redmi SD855 powered smartphone. It is advisable to wait for further leaks to know more about it.

A new Weibo post from Weibing suggests that the arrival of the Redmi flagship phone may not be very far away.

In the below shown screenshot, Weibing has claimed through Weibo that fans should not be believing and circulating rumors. The “not so fast, not so slow” translated text in his Weibo post is being related by the Chinese media to the release date of Redmi SD855 flagship phone. In other words, it is now being speculated that the launch date of the smartphone may not be far away.

When the Redmi executive says, “not so fast,” it could mean that the Redmi SD855 smartphone won’t be launching in April.  The “not so slow” text could mean that the release date of the Redmi flagship phone may not exceed June. Hence, there is a possibility that the smartphone may go official in May or June.

In China, June 18 is a very important mid-year online shopping festival. Probably, the company could be aiming the launch of Redmi 855 flagship phone around 618 festival to achieve higher sales.

Various smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, Google and so on are expected to announce their flagship phones from August through the end of the year. Hence, it appears that the mid-year could be the right time for the launch of Redmi flagship phone. Some reports have claimed that it may debut in China as Redmi Pro 2. Rumors have it that the same phone may debut outside of China as Poco F2.

Redmi flagship phone

Weibing had recently confirmed that the Redmi 855 flagship phone will be equipped with a 3.5mm audio jack. Yesterday, an image showing Xiaomi co-founder and President Lin Bin along with a mysterious phone featuring a pop-up selfie camera and a 3.5mm audio jack was released by Xiaomi’s Product Director Wang Teng Thomas. It is speculated that it could be the highly anticipated Redmi 855 flagship smartphone. There are chances that it could be some other smartphone since Weibing had claimed the company’s flagship phone won’t be featuring a pop-up selfie snapper. Could it be arriving with a punch-hole display design as it was seen in a leaked video recently? It is advisable to wait for further reports before confirming on the design and features of the forthcoming Redmi flagship smartphone.

Meitu’s Goodbye letter says it’ll continue to develop imaging technology

Meitu’s phones are easily recognised through the signature design they usually adopt. Sadly, the company couldn’t stay put in the shark-infested water which the Chinese smartphone market is. The innovative start-up was consumed by one of the “Sharks”- Xiaomi. The deal which would see Xiaomi release mobile products under the Meitu brand was first unveiled in November last year. A deadline for mid-2019 was announced when the company will stop manufacturing mobile phones. Apparently, that is coming earlier than expected as Meitu mobile has released a farewell letter to its fans.

The letter recalls, obviously with some nostalgia for those who could relate, the history of Meitu’s mobile phone. The letter was addressed as “To the most beautiful Mito mobile phone users”. The article sought to clarify the terms of the agreement the brand has with Xiaomi. The letter noted that the innovation is more of a transformation of the Meitu mobile phone brand to usher in new upgrade. It also revealed that the brand will continue to develop its impressive imaging technology, tapping from Xiaomi’s R&D towards improving that aspect. The letter also hinted that the phones will be produced and distributed by Xiaomi with a comprehensive technology upgrade and large-scale development. Thus, we should expect new Meitu mobile phones to be more powerful.

Earlier this year, Meitu had already hinted that the new mobile phones will be developed, produced, sold and promoted by Xiaomi. Meitu will only enjoy the sales share proportionally. As such, we can’t say if Xiaomi plans to retain the design style or if it is interested mostly in Meitu’s imaging technology. No worries, the new Meitu phones will soon hit the market, if the post by Xiaomi’s mobile phone product marketing director on Weibo is anything to go by.
