Design

Xiaomi Mi 9 is one of the most stylish phones that you can actually get at a modest price. And it is also the most beautiful one of this trio. Its wonderful glass back and its high screen-to-body ratio are the main elements making it so impressive. The second place, in my opinion, goes to ZTE Axon 10 Pro for a cleaner look thanks to its in-display fingerprint reader and its narrow bezels. Even though I think LG V8 ThinQ has a more outdated design, there is to award it for the best build quality. While Xiaomi Mi 9 does not offer any kind of certification and ZTE Axon 10 Pro has just the IP68 certification, LG G8 ThinQ has both the IP68 standard and the military-grade certification, so it is fully waterproof and drop resistant.

Display

While it is not the best flagship you can find when it comes to the design, LG G8 ThinQ has one of the most outstanding displays and it is way better than Xiaomi Mi 9 and ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G. Indeed, it offers more detail and even a more accurate color reproduction with a wide color gamut and a high brightness. Some may just not like that its display is smaller: just 6.1 inches against 6.39 and 6.49 inches of its rivals (19.5:9 aspect ratio). But hey, there is always a compromise to face. LG G8 ThinQ supports an innovative air gesture system that allows controlling the phone without even touching the screen. That looks very comfortable.

Hardware/Software

It is worth focusing on connectivity while talking about the hardware side because ZTE Axon 10 Pro is one of the first 5G-enabled phones. That is why I would choose it without thinking twice. All these devices are equipped with a Snapdragon 855 chipset, but the Axon 10 Pro also has the Snapdragon X50 which enables the support to 5G networks and blazing speeds in download and upload. On the other hand, Xiaomi Mi 9 comes with more RAM in its most expensive version: up to 8 GB. But it has no expandable storage, unlike LG G8 ThinQ and ZTE Axon 10 Pro.

Camera

On the paper, Xiaomi Mi 9 seems to have the triple rear camera that will deliver the best photo quality, but we can not give a definitive verdict until we tested all of these devices thoroughly. Note that all these devices come with a triple camera composed of a main sensor, a telephoto lens, and an ultrawide lens. But LG G8 ThinQ may be able to shoot better selfies with its dual selfie camera sporting a very bright focal aperture and a TOF 3D sensor that will be used for AR appliances and authentication.

Battery

With its huge 4000 mAh battery, ZTE Axon 10 Pro should deliver a very long battery life, way longer than both Xiaomi Mi 9 and LG G8 ThinQ. It should have no problems lasting a full day even with stressed usage patterns. On the other hand, LG G8 ThinQ will not be disappointing with its above-average 3500 mAh battery. Xiaomi Mi 9 should be the less convincing one as its battery is even smaller. A great thing of all these flagships is the fact that all of them support a fast charging technology as well as Qi wireless charging, thanks to their glass backs.

Price

Unfortunately, Xiaomi Mi 9 is the only device of this trio that is already in the market. It recently debuted with a starting price tag of just €449 for the configuration with 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. Given that they did not hit the shelves yet (and do not expect the ZTE Axon 10 Pro anytime soon as it is a 5G device), we do not know how much they will cost. Without knowing the prices, I would go for the ZTE Axon 10 Pro because of its bigger battery and the support to 5G connectivity, as well as its cool camera department, stereo speakers and wide display.

Social video app TikTok, also known as Douyin in China, was launched in China in September 2016. The media app was later introduced to the overseas market in 2017 and since then, it has been one success story to the other. The latest in TikTok’s success is that the app has hit a new milestone with more than one billion downloads recorded globally. This was released in the latest  Store Intelligence estimates report published by Sensor Tower.tiktok

The report also showed that the number of new users using the app reached 71.3 million persons. Other details include that 25 percent of TikTok’s downloads to date have come from India, and the userbase is estimated to be about 250 million. In January alone, 43 percent of new users were from India, compared to 9.5 percent in the same period last year. That underscores the growing popularity of the app in India. The number of new users in the US also grew as 9% of TikTok’s January installs were from the US compared to 5.6 percent last year. The app was also the number one non-game app in the US in January. In addition, the app was ranked as the number three app globally in terms of new installs across both Apple and Google app stores in January.

Vivo IQOO Gaming Flagship launched with Monster Halo lights, Touch buttons, and High-end Hardware

Vivo has just released its first smartphone under the new IQOO lineup. In case you are wondering, IQOO stands for I Quest On and On. With this move, the company joins the likes of its Chinese counterparts like Xiaomi and OPPO who have successfully released compelling smartphones from its sub-brands in the past few months. Interestingly, the phone is being called simply as the IQOO.

IQOO Vivo phone

IQOO is a lineup aimed at gamers and high-performance users. The phone comes with the top of the line Snapdragon 855 processor in four memory variants, 6+128GB, 8+128GB, 8+256GB, and a monster version with 12+256GB. Much of the phone’s design is standard, featuring a waterdrop screen up front with a high screen to body ratio and triple camera setup at the back with the IQOO logo placed vertically. However, Vivo does try to differentiate it from the competition by giving it a unique back design. There are two colors available for the phone, Electro-optic Blue and Lava Orange and both the variants feature Halo light strip at the back. Bengaluru-based Signalchip reveals India’s first semiconductor chips for 4G and 5G NR modems

Signalchip, India based fab-less semiconductor company which has revealed India’s first semiconductor chips for 4G and 5G modems. Today, at an event in New Delhi, Signalchip made the announcement of the new semiconductors in the presence of Telecom secretary Aruna Sundararajan. The new launch has added India into the elite category of countries who can build and design semiconductor chips. There are only 8 countries around the globe which are capable of manufacturing these kinds of chips.

signalchip

In brief, Signaltech said that the new series of chips namely SCBM34XX and SCRF34XX/45XX have been developed after deep R&D for the past 8 years. The code-named ‘Agumbe’ semiconductor chips are specially crafted for 4G and 5G modems. In total Signalchip has unveiled four chips and the details are as follow:

  1. SCBM3412: a single chip 4G/LTE modem including the baseband and transceiver sections in a single device
  2. SCBM3404: a single chip 4X4 LTE baseband modem
  3. SCRF3402: a 2X2 transceiver for LTE
  4. SCRF4502: a 2X2 transceiver for 5G NR standards

Additionally, these new chips have been embedded with NAVIC, India’s own satellite navigation system. It is built on the SCRF1401, RF transceiver chip launched in 2015 by Signalchip.

Further, speaking at the occasion, Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan, said, “This is a proud moment for India’s Digital Communications industry. I congratulate the Signalchip team for designing India’s first indigenous semiconductor chips for 4G/LTE and 5G NR modems. India aspires to take a leadership role in developing inclusive 5G technologies for economic self-sufficiency and strategic needs of the country. These chips are a significant step in this direction as they have the potential to cater to the growing digital connectivity needs of the next 5 billion users, by enabling high-performance mobile networks at lower cost.” She added, “The Signalchip team’s persistence over the 8-year R&D period and the commitment shown by Sridhar Vembu to believe in this vision is indeed commendable.”

These new chips are particularly designed to evolve new network architectures like RAN/CRAN. With the invent of these chips, companies now have the potential to design more complex chips which can directly integrate for advanced 5G NR features. Signalchip’s new high performance and cost-efficient systems are capable to enable densification of India’s vast networks.

Signalchip’s founder and CEO, Himanshu Khasnis said that until now devices manufactured in India or imported from outside use imported silicon chips. He further added that it is quite a complex and challenging activity which need deep R&D and mastery of different domains. Himanshu stressed on the pros of the indigenously developed silicon chips and quoted that, “wireless communication is central to almost all economic, strategic and domestic activities happening today, the ability to indigenously design and develop silicon chips is vital for the security and prosperity of our country.”

Well, it is a significant development, which has allowed India to enter the elite group of countries developing semiconductor chipsets.

Huawei’s CEO takes a swipe at Samsung’s Galaxy Fold, thinks the design is bad

A couple of years back, folding smartphones looked like concepts that may never see the light of day. But this year has already seen the official launch of two foldable smartphones – the Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X. Both the Mate X and Galaxy Fold were showcased at the Mobile World Congress 2019 and were unarguably the kings of MWC in Barcelona this week. Both models embody the long wait and anticipation for foldable phones. Samsung Galaxy Fold Three-App Multitasking

Although both the Mate X and Galaxy Fold are foldable, they employ different designs. Huawei’s CEO Richard Yu spoke recently about the design of both models and as would be expected, he prefers the Mate X. Now, we can’t be too surprised about that but he gave reasons why he thinks the Mate X’s design is better. Richard Yu recently revealed to Business Insider that Huawei at the same time worked on different foldable phone projects with one having a semblance to that of the Galaxy Fold. He even claims their design was even better but he personally killed its development because “it was bad”.

Read Also: Xiaomi Mi 9 vs LG G8 ThinQ vs Samsung Galaxy S10e: Specs Comparison

Richard Yu further added that; “I feel having two screens, a front screen and a back screen, makes the phone too heavy”, speaking about the Galaxy Fold. This may not be far from reality as the Mate X is thinner and may be a better reflection of what most people think a foldable phone should look like. That is a phone that you can use and instantly transform to a tablet instead of switching screens. But then, the Galaxy Fold protects the soft foldable screen better than the Mate X since the outer display is stronger.

Blackberry sues Twitter, accuses it of patent infringement

Most of us will definitely remember the era when BlackBerry held sway and everyone wants to own a Blackberry smartphone. All that changed with the advent of Android phones and the fluidity it brought in terms of user interface. Well, Blackberry still controls a lot of patents to date and even though the company is out contention in the industry, it holds a number of patents. Blackberry has accused Twitter of infringing on six of its patents.BLACKBERRY KEY2 LE

Both companies are locked in a legal tussle, instituted by Blackberry which accused Twitter of infringing on some of its patents covering things like push notifications, silencing notifications for a message thread and mobile advertising techniques. In the suit, the Canadian company which referred to itself as a pioneer in mobile messaging,  alleged that Twitter “created mobile messaging applications that co-opt BlackBerry’s innovations, using a number of the innovative user interface and functionality enhancing features that made BlackBerry’s products such a critical and commercial success in the first place.”

This lawsuit is similar to the one Blackberry filed against Facebook last year. In the case of Facebook, BlackBerry cited seven patents that relate to security, user interface features, battery-efficient status updates, mobile messaging in games and, similarly to its issue with Twitter, silencing notifications. Facebook was later to file a countersuit where it alleged that Blackberry infringed on five of its patents. The two suits are still in litigation and so, we don’t expect a resolution to emerge from this new suit anytime soon.

Xiaomi Redmi 7 global launch could be nearing

The Xiaomi Redmi 7 has been approved by multiple certification bodies in the recent past. Today, the smartphone has been certified by NBTC in Thailand and TKDN in Indonesia. Now that the phone has bagged approval from multiple bodies, it appears that its global launch is close at hand.

The NBTC and TKDN listings of the M180F6LG model number have not revealed any information on its specifications. As Singapore’s IMDA body had certified the M180F6LG as Redmi 7, the NBTC certification also confirms the same moniker. In the previous, the FCC body in the U.S. had also certified by the M180F6LG smartphone.

Through the FCC listing it was revealed that the handset could be arriving with a display of around 6.2 inches. The dimensions of the handset are 157 x 76mm. The MIUI 10 based Android OS will be available preinstalled on the handset. The FCC documents have revealed that the Redmi 7 has three modes like 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage, 3 GB RAM + 64 GB storage and 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage.

The 3C authority of China had three model numbers of the smartphone such as M180F6LE, M180F6LC and M180F6LT. It also confirmed that the phone will be shipped with a 10W charger. It indicated that the phone could be packed with modest specs.

Redmi is yet to confirm on the existence of the Redmi 7 series. The company has recently launched the Redmi Note 7 Pro smartphone in India. In China, the handset will be announced on March 18. Samsung Galaxy S10 phones to ship with pre-applied screen protector

As smartphones are getting more advanced, the use of screen protectors is reducing due to technical constraints. Samsung’s recently launched flagship device, Galaxy S10 is an excellent example of this which carries Ultrasonic Fingerprint Sensor. These sensors tend to be faster and efficient than the optical sensors, but comes with some disadvantages also. UFS sensors don’t work correctly if some third layer is present in between your finger and the sensor. Eventually, it posed a big challenge for the users who would like to use screen protectors on the device.

OnePlus 3 and 3T will eventually receive Android Pie update soon

OnePlus is a fast-growing smartphone manufacturer which have established its roots within a few years. They have launched various flagship devices packing high-end specs and fully furnished software. OnePlus is always known for its responsive software support which always keeps on bringing new features without compensating its software accuracy. Now, it seems that OnePlus is changing a bit due to its increasing product portfolio.

OnePlus 3 and 3T Android Pie

It’s been a long time since OnePlus has promised Android Pie update for OnePlus 3 and 3T devices. In actual, OnePlus has confirmed about the update on 2016 flagship devices about seven months ago. Despite a fake benchmark listing of OnePlus 3T running Android Pie leaked a few months ago, nothing has been seen on the ground level. Eventually, the users have started complaining about the same. In a similar question asked by a user at community forums,  OnePlus manager replied that the company is working on to bring one last Oreo-based update after which the Android Pie update will roll out.

Still, there are no precise or exact details about when the OnePlus 3 series devices will start receiving the update. In order to settle down the users’ queries, OnePlus Manager David Y has made an official statement. The reply from the manager is even not complete, and it is missing actual details like an exact date or any other reliable information. In a David Y statement, it has been confirmed that OnePlus will surely provide an update, but before that, another Oreo-based update will roll out first.

Further, there’s no other information like when it might release as said above. Well, it’s a respite for the users who have stopped waiting for the update due to extensive delay. Users were bit frustrated, but we hope the official statement would have given them some respite.

Although, OnePlus 3 has already received two major updates including Android Nougat and Oreo. The latest Android Pie update will be the third consecutive big update for a 3-year-old device. Earlier, OnePlus denied the Android Pie update and termed the Android Oreo as the last update for the device. But due to increasing competition from rivals, OnePlus promised the Android Pie update previous year in summers. We hope OnePlus 3/3T users will get the due update within the next couple of months.

Although, how many of you are waiting for the Android Pie update on OnePlus 3/3T?
