7 Reasons why OxygenOS 15 is better than OxygenOS 14

OxygenOS 15

OxygenOS, based on Android 15, brings some great new features and essential improvements. From user experience to privacy, improvements have been made to almost every corner. If you’re wondering whether to upgrade to OxygenOS 15, dive into these 7 reasons to understand why it’s a far better choice than OxygenOS 14.

1. Faster, smoother, and more lightweight

OxygenOS 15 introduces parallel processing, which addresses the laggy app switching problem on smartphones. This industry-first solution dramatically improves animation interactions, though it’s only noticeable when you open and close multiple apps in quick succession.

OxygenOS 15 smoother app switching

In OxygenOS 14 or earlier, an app has to execute a series of tasks to open, causing a little lag if another app is opened quickly. The latest version handles those tasks parallely, thus reducing that lag, even under heavy workloads.

OnePlus claims a significant reduction in system storage for OxygenOS 15. The OnePlus 12 running OxygenOS 15 saves nearly 20% of system storage by identifying and removing redundant features.

2. Circle to Search

Circle to Search, introduced initially on the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, is also coming to OnePlus phones with the OxygenOS 15 feature. It’s a quick way to search anything on your screen just by drawing a circle around it.

OxygenOS 15 Circle to Search

It’s an exciting feature that you’ll likely use a lot or not at all. It works well for me, though. I often use it to search tech products showing up in reels.

3. AI upgrades

Image cleanup is now a lot easier, thanks to new AI tools in OxygenOS 15. First is the AI Detail Boost, which upscales images to 4K resolution so you can crop them without losing quality. There’s also AI Unblur (to improve blurred images) and AI Reflection Eraser (to remove all glares from your shots).

OxygenOS 15 AI Reflection Eraser

These AI features are not perfect, though. However, it’s far better than not having them.

The Notes app is also getting smarter with AI upgrades. Among those include a Cleanup tool to remove pauses from a transcript, a Format for creating clean summaries, and a Tone Adjustment to change the writing tone. Using the Continue Writing feature, you can generate new content with the help of AI.

4. Intelligent search

Unlike traditional keyword-based searches, the intelligent search feature in OxygenOS 15 leverages natural language processing, allowing users to search across system apps using everyday language. It uses both the cloud and on-device AI capabilities.

Intelligent search - OxygenOS 15

This AI-enabled search feature reduces the need to open apps to find relevant answers. For example, you can ask, “how much is the electricity bill?” or “what’s the due date for credit card bill payment?” to get the required information on the screen without even opening the Message app. The Photos app currently supports in-app keyword searches, though.

5. OnePlus OneTake

The OnePlus OneTake feature in OxygenOS 15 delivers a seamless visual experience. It ensures a seamless transition from Always-On Display to the lock screen and then to the main screen.

OnePlus OneTake - OxygenOS 15

You can choose images from the camera or album to create a multilayered effect using the “Depth” feature. You can showcase the main focus throughout multiple screens, adding a personal touch to the device.

6. Live alerts

OxygenOS 14’s Smart suggestion now has a new name: Live Alerts. Previously, you had to tap and hold the icon in the notification panel to see them in the form of a card. Now, that’s just a tap away, similar to how it works on iPhones. It has also been improved to work with more system functions like hotspots, screen recording, music playback, and more.

7. Theft protection

If privacy is a priority for you, OxygenOS 15 has another reason to grab your attention. It incorporates theft protection measures to safeguard your data in the event of theft. If someone snatches your device and runs away with it, the lock gets activated automatically to prevent unauthorized access.

If your device goes offline or the SIM card is removed, an offline lock is activated. You can also remotely lock the device using the FindMyDevice portal, even without logging into your Google account.

#Bonus

The OnePlus Easter Egg is back in the Calculator app. You’ll see the OnePlus’s Never Settle animation after tapping “1” and “+” followed by “=”. It’s a nice aesthetic element to OxygenOS 15 that old OnePlus fans would appreciate.

iQOO 13 vs. Realme GT 7 Pro: How Do the Cheapest Snapdragon 8 Elite Flagships Compare in India?

The iQOO 13 has already been unveiled in China, and now it is planning on making its global debut in India soon. However, the Realme GT 7 Pro is another affordable Snapdragon 8 Elite powered flagship smartphone that is launching in India a week ahead of the iQOO 13. So let’s see how these models compare in the region.

Realme GT 7 Pro vs iQOO 13
Realme GT 7 Pro (L) vs iQOO 13 (R)

1. iQOO 13 vs Realme GT 7 Pro: When are they launching in India & What’s the price?

In an official teaser, the Realme GT 7 Pro was confirmed to launch in India on 26th November 2024. In other words, it is arriving in the country a week earlier than the iQOO 13. To recall, the latter is set to launch in the market on 3rd December 2024.

When we first compared the two devices before, the Realme GT 7 Pro was the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Elite powered smartphone. Meanwhile, the iQOO 13 was the second most affordable model in China with the same flagship chipset. The Realme GT 7 Pro was announced in China for 3,699 Yuan, or roughly around 43,716 INR (515 US Dollars). iQOO unveiled its new flagship phone for 3,999 Yuan or about 47,262 INR (roughly 561 US Dollars). Both models will likely cost more outside of China, but we can expect a similar price gap between the two in India as well.

2. What’s the difference between the iQOO 13 & Realme GT 7 Pro?

The iQOO 13 was unveiled with a taller 6.83-inch LTPO OLED display that offers a higher 2K resolution and a smoother 144Hz refresh rate. However, the Realme GT 7 Pro has a 6.78-inch LTPO Samsung Eco² OLED Plus display that has an impressive 6000 nits of peak brightness, 1.5K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 2600Hz touch sampling rate.

While both models are equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC, the iQOO 13 houses an impressive 6,150mAh battery pack, but a larger 6,500mAh cell powers the Realme GT 7 Pro. Unfortunately, Realme GT 7 Pro does not support wireless charging but offers faster 120W wired charging. On the other hand, the iQOO 13 has 100W wired fast charging and 50W wireless fast charging.

One of the biggest differences between the iQOO 13 and Realme GT 7 Pro is the camera department. You get three 50MP sensors on the iQOO flagship for its main, ultra wide, and telephoto shooter. The premium new Realme phone only offers a 50MP main sensor, which is paired with an 8MP ultra wide angle lens and a 50MP telephoto shooter. For selfies and video calls, the Realme GT 7 Pro features a 16MP selfie shooter, while the iQOO 13 packs a 32MP camera.

Tipster names six sub-flagship phones set to launch by late 2024

If you’re looking for a powerful phone without the flagship price tag, the next few months are shaping up to be a great time to upgrade. According to a recent leak from tipster Digital Chat Station, a wave of sub-flagship devices is set to hit shelves before the end of the year.

Leading this wave are brands like Redmi and iQOO. Redmi will launch two phones in its K80 series, the K80 and K80 Pro, later this month. According to reports, the Redmi K80 and Redmi K80 Pro will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Snapdragon 8 Elite chipsets, respectively.

Redmi K70 Pro
Redmi K70 Pro

The iQOO Neo 10 series is also expected to launch in November, with standard and Pro variants. The Neo 10 is likely to include the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, while the Pro model may feature the Dimensity 9400 SoC.

OnePlus, known for its flagship killers, might be joining the party with the Ace 5 series. It will be the successor to the Ace 4 series from last year and rumors suggest the Ace 5 might launch with only a standard model initially, followed by a Pro version in mid-2025.

There’s more…

In addition to familiar names, the leak suggests that Honor will also release its new GT series by year’s end. Meanwhile, Realme, known for keeping pace with competitors, may launch the GT Neo 7.

For those seeking top-notch processing power at a lower price, the Redmi Turbo 4 could be worth a look. Redmi’s Turbo series focuses on bringing flagship-level processors to more affordable devices, making it a strong choice for gamers and power users.

Keep in mind that these details are still based on leaks, and manufacturers haven’t confirmed official specs or launch dates. However, with these devices expected by year’s end, keep a close eye on these upcoming sub-flagship launches. With a variety of options on the horizon, there’s likely to be a phone that meets both your needs and budget.

itel launches S25 and S25 Ultra before Samsung

Samsung’s S25 series is still a long way off. While the real deal will drop in February, itel has some interesting options for you—the S25 and S25 Ultra. Yes, you read that right. But don’t get too excited; these fall squarely in the “affordable” category.

itel launched these models in the Philippines as successors to the S24 series. itel S24 series, of course. From the name to the design, it’s clear that itel took a playful jab at the upcoming Galaxy S25 by introducing a similar squarish look, albeit with a unique ring light flash (plus a secondary one for good measure).

itel S25 / S25 Ultra Specifications

The S25 features a flat AMOLED display, while the S25 Ultra upgrades to a curved AMOLED with a two-tone color scheme.

The specs are, well, basic. The S25 boasts a 6.78-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Powering it is a yet-to-be-confirmed chipset, though rumors point to the Unisoc T612.

You get a 50MP main camera paired with a 32MP selfie camera, DTS Audio for a supposed immersive listening experience, and a decent 5000mAh battery. Disappointingly, there’s no mention of fast charging on this model. It does come with IP54 splash resistance, which is a nice touch.

The S25 Ultra offers a slightly better spec sheet. It keeps the same display size and refresh rate, but upgrades to a curved AMOLED panel protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 7i (a less robust version of the Victus glass).

Inside, you’ll find the Unisoc T620 chipset, again paired with a 50MP main and 32MP selfie camera setup. You also get an in-display fingerprint sensor for added security. Thankfully, the Ultra version bumps the water resistance rating to IP64, making it more dust and water-resistant.

Price and Availability

The Itel S25 starts at PHP 5,799 (about USD 110) for the 8GB/128GB variant, while the S25 Ultra begins at PHP 10,999 (around USD 210) for the same RAM but double the storage at 256GB. The itel S25 is already open for pre-order, with the S25 Ultra following on November 10th.

The S25 comes in three colors—Bromo Black, Mambo Mint, and Sahara Gleam. The S25 Ultra, on the other hand, offers Meteor Titanium, Bromo Black, and Komodo Ocean.

DJI Mic Mini leak reveals price and accessories details of upcoming compact microphone

DJI is expected to launch a budget-friendly wireless microphone system, the DJI Mic Mini, soon. A leak earlier this month gave us a first look at the microphone and some specs. Now, a new one has spilled the beans on the microphone’s price and its included accessories.

Twitter user and tipster @Quadro_News reports that the Mic Mini will appeal to cost-conscious creators with tiered pricing options. The most affordable choice appears to be a single Mic Mini unit at €59 (around $63.27).

Stepping up, a single unit bundled without a charging case is expected to come in at €89 (roughly $95.44). Rounding out the options, there will be a dual-transmitter package with a dedicated charging case which is tipped to carry a price tag of €169 (around $181.2).

Take a look at DJI Mic Mini accessories

The leak also includes an image showing the accessories to be included in the higher-end combo. The compact microphones sit alongside a sleek charging case, windshields for diverse recording environments, a carrying pouch, and USB-C and 3.5mm adapters—ensuring compatibility with a wide range of devices.

Weighing just 10 grams, the Mic Mini emphasizes portability. Its minimalist design, paired with a clip-on attachment as seen in previous leaks, suggests it could be a popular pick for vloggers and mobile journalists who need high-quality audio on the go.

This leak also confirms earlier details about the Mic Mini’s minimalist clip-on design and its color options: Arctic White and Infinity Black. With these specifics now revealed, an official announcement from DJI seems imminent—possibly within days. Stay tuned for any updates.

Vivo S20 Pro prepares for launch, spotted on 3C with 90W charging

Vivo’s upcoming S20 series is gaining traction in the rumor mill. After a leak that revealed the phones’ launch timeframe, reliable leaker Digital Chat Station has now seemingly revealed some key details about the upcoming Vivo S20 Pro.

The leak comes as a new Vivo phone, model number V2430A, recently passed China’s mandatory 3C quality certification. The leaker suggests this model could be the S20 Pro.

While the 3C certification itself doesn’t divulge much beyond the phone being a 5G device, Digital Chat Station sheds some light on what we can expect.

Vivo S20 Pro could with Dimensity 9300+

The S20 Pro appears to be packing a punch with a sub-flagship MediaTek Dimensity 9300+ processor. The vanilla model in the line is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3.

As for the display, the leak suggests a 1.5K resolution with an “equal-depth quad-curved screen.” This likely refers to a display with subtly curved edges on all four sides for a more immersive viewing experience. In the comments, DCS revealed the phone will have a 6.67-inches screen.

The camera department seems to be getting a decent upgrade as well. Digital Chat Station claims a 50-megapixel main sensor, possibly accompanied by a 3x optical zoom periscope lens. Its predecessor has a 2x optical zoom 50MP lens.

Another interesting tidbit is the mention of a large battery. While the exact capacity remains unknown, the 3C certification does hint at support for 90W fast charging. This aligns with the charging capabilities of Vivo’s recently launched X200 series, suggesting the S20 Pro might offer similarly speedy top-ups.

Finally, the leak mentions a “thin body” for the S20 Pro. This could be a major selling point for users who prioritize a sleek and pocketable design.

It’s important to remember that this information comes from a leak, and Vivo has yet to officially confirm the existence of the S20 Pro or its specifications. However, Digital Chat Station has a solid track record, so there’s a good chance these details are accurate.

Motorola Outsources 90% of Its Phones, Xiaomi 78%, Vivo 52%, While Apple Outsources None

Smartphone design is not always done by the brands you see on the box. A new report by Counterpoint Research sheds light on the extent of outsourcing in the industry, revealing which manufacturers rely most heavily on external design firms.

Motorola takes the crown for outsourcing, with a whopping 90% of its smartphones designed by third parties in the first half of 2024. Following closely is Xiaomi, with 78% of its designs outsourced. Vivo falls somewhere in the middle at 52%.

This trend is expected to continue, with Counterpoint predicting a 6% growth in the market for outsourced smartphone designs in the first half of 2024. The driving force behind this growth? The surging popularity of budget and mid-range phones from Chinese brands.

Looking at other major players, Huawei outsources around 44% of its designs, while Honor and the Oppo group come in at 40% and 39% respectively. Interestingly, the report reveals a distinct approach between Apple and Samsung.

Apple remain the sole outlier

Apple remains firmly committed to in-house design, controlling the entire process for all its iPhones. Samsung, on the other hand, outsources a smaller portion – 22% in the first half of 2024. This number, however, is reportedly on the decline.

Samsung Galaxy A16 5G
Samsung Galaxy A16 5G

Counterpoint attributes this shift to two key factors. Firstly, Samsung has faced declining market share in the lower and mid-range segments, areas where outsourcing is more prevalent. Secondly, the South Korean giant is increasingly relying on its own factories in India to manufacture budget devices.

Looking forward, Counterpoint predicts a 6% growth in the outsourced smartphone design market for the first half of 2024. The growth is said to be drive by the rising popularity of budget and mid-range devices from Chinese brands, which often rely on external design partners to expedite product launches and remain cost-competitive.

Bees stopped Meta from building world’s first nuclear-powered AI data center

Meta had to cancel its plans for a nuclear-powered AI data center in the US due to environmental challenges. Initially, the company intended to build a facility powered by emissions-free energy from an established nuclear plant operator, making Meta one of the first tech companies to consider nuclear energy specifically for AI processing needs.

However, a rare species of bee was found on the site chosen for the data center, presenting regulatory and environmental obstacles that ultimately led to the project’s halt.

Bees-buzzkill-big-techs-nuclear-dreams

The reason why big tech companies are increasingly exploring nuclear power as an energy source for AI development is that AI models require vast amounts of computational power, leading to the consumption of significant energy, often around-the-clock. Traditional energy sources, especially fossil fuels, struggle to provide sustainable and scalable power without increasing carbon emissions.

Nuclear energy, however, offers a stable, emissions-free power supply that aligns well with the tech industry’s environmental commitments and long-term goals.

Bees buzzkill big tech’s nuclear dreams

During an all-hands meeting, CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed disappointment, as the company had been prepared to move forward with the nuclear provider to ensure clean energy for the facility.

Meta

While Meta’s nuclear ambitions for this site are now shelved, the company is not ruling out alternative avenues to secure low-carbon energy sources. This move aligns with a broader trend among tech giants, including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, which have all recently committed to nuclear power for their data centers.

Microsoft, for example, has a 20-year agreement to source energy from the historic Three Mile Island nuclear plant, now rebranded as the Crane Clean Energy Center, to power its own AI initiatives.

Google and Amazon are also investing in small modular reactors (SMRs), compact nuclear units designed for safer and flexible deployment, with Google expecting its reactors to be operational by 2030.

Meta remains committed to exploring additional sources of clean energy to support its data-intensive AI operations. The tech industry’s increasing reliance on nuclear power underscores the growing energy needs of AI and the critical role of clean energy in meeting sustainability goals. However, for now, the presence of endangered wildlife and the regulatory landscape have redirected Meta’s plans for a nuclear-powered AI future.

Oppo Find N5 aka OnePlus Open 2 launch timeframe tipped in new leak

After taking a break this year, Oppo is expected to launch its new foldable, the Find N5, in China in 2025. Globally, the device will debut as the OnePlus Open 2. Although details were scarce before, new leaks are starting to reveal more.

Similarly, in a recent leak, Weibo tipster Smart Pikachu shared some phone specs, along with its expected launch timeframe.

Oppo Find N5 / OnePlus Open 2 launches on…

The insider reports that Oppo is planning to launch the Find N5 in the first half of 2025. That is between January and June. The device will likely feature a 50MP triple rear camera setup and run on the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor.

The foldable is also expected to be slim and lightweight, with a metal frame and support for wireless magnetic charging. Oppo even hinted at this wireless charging capability for the Find N5 in a subtle video teaser for the Find X8 back in September.

Notably, the tipster claims the foldable will be compatible with Apple’s ecosystem. That likely refers to the “Share with iPhone” feature that Oppo and OnePlus introduced with their Android 15 skin.

This feature allows seamless sharing of photos, videos, and other files between an Android phone and an iPhone, though it requires an app to be installed on the iPhone.

OnePlus Open

According to a previous report, the Find N5 will feature a dual-cell battery configuration (2,460mAh + 3,105mAh), providing a rated capacity of 5,565mAh, with a typical capacity of around 5,700mAh.

The phone’s camera setup is expected to include a 50MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide lens, and a 50MP periscope telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, all within a slim 9mm body.

The Oppo Find N3 (aka the OnePlus Open) received widespread praise for its hardware and software quality, and the brands are expected to deliver similar excellence with their next foldable, especially after taking a year-long break. We’ll see what innovations they bring next.

Apple’s camera innovation for iPhone 18 series could include a variable aperture system

Apple finally included a periscope telephoto lens in its iPhone 15 Pro Max last year, later extending the upgrade to the iPhone 16 Pro. This is just one example of how the Cupertino firm has adopted technological advancements much later than its competitors.

Now, reports suggest that Apple plans to introduce a variable aperture camera to the iPhone 18 series—a feature that Samsung, introduced back in 2018 with the Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus. Since then, various smartphone makers have experimented with the new tech in their flagships and some still use it, such as the Xiaomi 14 Pro and Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

The variable aperture feature is expected to be available only on the iPhone 18 Pro models, potentially reinforcing the distinction between standard and Pro iPhone models.

The variable aperture could benefit iPhone’s imaging system significantly

While the optical upgrade didn’t secure Samsung a major advantage at the time, Apple’s approach could reportedly mark a more significant impact. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a trusted source for Apple-related news, this new feature is expected to arrive in 2026 with the iPhone 18 series.

For those unfamiliar, a variable aperture enables the camera to adapt to various lighting conditions by adjusting its lens opening, allowing more or less light into the sensor.

iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max

In essence, this upgrade for the iPhone 18 series could result in better-quality photos in low-light settings while offering more control over depth of field (when the light is sufficient). This flexibility is already present in high-end DSLR cameras and some Android phones including the two I mentioned above. Not to mention, it would be a significant addition to the iPhone’s photography capabilities, potentially giving Apple a competitive edge among those who prioritize camera quality.

Apple’s decision to rely on an established Android supplier highlights a growing trend of cross-platform technology adoption in the smartphone industry.

Additionally, Apple is reportedly considering Samsung as a new supplier of camera sensors, potentially ending Sony’s exclusive role in this area.

For those unwilling to wait for the iPhone 18 series, expected in late 2027, the iPhone 17 Pro series could serve as a promising alternative – with a more capable chipset, possibly more RAM (necessary for more advanced on-device AI features), and also, a 48MP telephoto aimed at better clarity on long range zoom.

OnePlus 13’s OxygenOS 15 uses 20% less storage than OxygenOS 14 on OnePlus 12

OnePlus recently launched the OnePlus 13 in China, bringing with it several enhancements and a refined user interface with OxygenOS 15. Among the software’s latest features, storage optimization has emerged as a highlight, allowing users to unlock over 5GB of additional usable space for apps and files. This innovation exemplifies OnePlus’s commitment to maximizing user convenience.

OnePlus-13-performance

According to the company, OxygenOS 15 on the OnePlus 13 (our hands on review) uses around 20% less storage space than Oxygen OS 14 on the OnePlus 12, giving OnePlus 13 users additional room for their apps, photos, and files.

OxygenOS 15 cones with a redesigned system partition

OxygenOS 15 includes optimizations in how storage is managed and allocated. According to Android Authority, OnePlus achieves this optimization by resizing the “super” partition, which holds critical system files across various sub-partitions. Android devices use a set of dynamically resizable partitions within the “super” partition to facilitate updates and maintain system integrity. If OnePlus makes the super partition too small, the device may not support future updates. On the other hand, if it’s too large, it wastes valuable storage space for user data.

Developer MlgmXyysd, known for sharing Android system insights, revealed that while the OnePlus 12’s super partition consumed around 16GB, the OnePlus 13’s super partition is reduced to approximately 14.3GB.

OxygenOS 15 beta

This approach with the OnePlus 13 also involves minimizing superfluous files in the OS. The company also reportedly eliminated preloaded wallpapers and redundant resources, while still allowing users to download these on demand. This leaner design reduces storage consumption without compromising system performance.

Additionally, OnePlus’s use of compressed file systems, specifically EROFS (Enhanced Read-Only File System), further reduces the footprint of system files while maintaining speed and reliability.

Google’s Android update framework plays a role in OnePlus’s storage strategy, enabling a more flexible approach. When major updates roll out, the system can temporarily use storage from the user’s partition to facilitate the process. This adaptive feature means that despite reducing the super partition, updates should continue smoothly.

The Surprising Reason Why Sony PS5 Pro Won’t Launch in India Soon

Back in September 2024, Sony officially announced the PlayStation 5 Pro with enhanced performance and improved ray tracing. The brand’s latest gaming console just recently went on sale in several countries. However, it seems its Indian release might still be a while away. So here’s the surprising reason why the PS5 Pro’s launch was delayed in India.

India Misses out on Sony PS5 Pro Launch: Here’s Why

The Japanese tech giant has delayed the launch of the PS5 Pro due to a regulatory issue in India and various other countries. To recall. the PlayStation 5 Pro arrives with the latest Wi-Fi 7 standard (IEEE 802.11be). This new connectivity technology helps make download speeds faster, improving the online gaming experience overall. But this new tech operates in the 6GHz wireless band, which offers wider channels and less interference compared to its predecessors.

Unfortunately, India and certain other countries have yet to approve this new WiFi standard. Due to this minor regulatory hurdle, Sony has pushed back the PS5 Pro launch. Unlike the global market, the launch of the latest PlayStation in India is not near. So until the Indian government approves Wi-Fi 7 technology, gamers in the region might have to buy the new console from abroad. This delay has disappointed fans and those eager to buy the new console.

Oddly enough, there are various smartphones that support WiFi 7, which launched in India. Although, these models only supported Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 6. Sony could follow a similar strategy to launch the PS5 Pro in India soon. As of right now, it is still unclear when the company will launch the PS5 Pro in India. The company has yet to make any official announcement, so stick around for more as we will be providing updates when additional information is available regarding this matter.
