POCO M6 Plus 5G Leaks Suggest Rebranded Redmi Phone with Snapdragon 4 Gen 2

Xiaomi‘s sub-brands Redmi and POCO are launching smartphones powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor, targeting global markets. Recent leaks from the Google Play Console database shed light on these upcoming devices. Interestingly, both the Redmi 13 5G and POCO M6 Plus 5G are rumored to be equipped with the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor.

The leaked specifications for both phones have strong similarities

The POCO M6 Plus 5G listing reveals more details, including 8GB of RAM, an Adreno 613 GPU, Android 14 operating system, and a Full HD+ (1080×2460) display with a 440 dpi pixel density. While specific details for the Redmi 13 5G are limited, the Google Play Console listing suggests it might share the same processor, GPU, and OS but possibly with a different RAM configuration (potentially 6GB).

The speculation suggests the POCO M6 Plus 5G might be a rebranded version of the Redmi Note 13R, recently launched in China. The leaked specifications for both phones have a lot of similarities.

It appears Xiaomi is prepping for a launch of very similar 5G smartphones under its Redmi and POCO brands, powered by the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor. We can expect some regional variations in terms of specific features or RAM configurations, but overall, these phones will likely offer comparable performance at an affordable price point. How Xiaomi differentiates these phones and which markets they target for each brand will be interesting to see in the coming months.

It also seamlessly works in both SA (standalone) and NSA (non-standalone) network environments, along with Sub-6GHz frequencies, ensuring wider compatibility and better stability.

Feimao designed the U20 with convenience in mind. The USB 3.0-C port enables high-speed wired connections, and multiple power supply options ensure you’ll never be without Wi-Fi. They even have a motto: “Wi-Fi wherever there is electricity.” The U20 supports USB 3.0/2.0 compatibility, but for power supply it requires 5V=2.0A.

In terms of compatibility, the Xiaomi 6A cable is designed to work with a wide range of devices. It supports charging for mainstream smartphones, tablets, laptops, wearables, and other electronic devices, making it a versatile option for users with various gadgets.

Additionally, Xiaomi boasts that the cable can withstand over 10,000 plugging and unplugging cycles on the phone side, ensuring long-lasting durability.

The Xiaomi 6A cable also offers 480Mbps data transmission speeds, enabling smooth file transfer between devices. With a 2-meter length, the cable provides ample reach for charging your devices from a comfortable distance, eliminating the need to be right next to a power outlet.

Should you be concerned about Microsoft Recall? Microsoft Research’s chief scientist seemed unwilling to talk about the security risks

You may have already heard about Windows 11‘s Microsoft Recall, which continuously records one’s activities in a series of screenshots and activity logs. It is aimed at helping out users by answering questions related to their recent activity. While the activity logs and screenshots might be helpful to you (probably asking for a password you’ve forgotten) it could also pose security risks.

In the latest news, Jaime Teevan, chief scientist and technical fellow at Microsoft Research, was asked to talk about the data privacy concerns surrounding Microsoft Recall at the US university’s Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence’s fifth-anniversary conference. However, she seemed to be unwilling to get to the point.

Microsoft Research chief scientist on how Microsoft is dealing with user data

Erik Brynjolfsson, director of the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, started by mentioning that there was “kind of a backlash against all the privacy challenges” around Microsoft’s new Recall feature. Brynjolfsson urged to know more about “both the pluses and minuses of using all that data and some of the risks that create and also some of the opportunities.”

Erik Brynjolfsson and Jaime Teevan on stage (Image: The Register)

“Yeah, and so it’s a great question, Erik. This has come up throughout the morning as well – the importance of data. And this AI revolution that we’re in right now is really changing the way we understand data. Microsoft generally helps large enterprises manage their data, create data, share data, and that data is really something that makes the business of work different in the context of generative AI.” the Microsoft official responded. “But of course, we are rethinking what data means and how we use it, how we value it, how it gets used.”

Observing her unwillingness to get to the point, Brynjolfsson further asked “Is it stored locally?” He shared his concerns about data privacy. “So suppose I activate Recall, and I don’t know if I can, but when you have something like that available, I would be worried about all my personal files going up into the cloud, Microsoft, or whatever. Do you have it kept locally?”

Teevan finally confirmed that the screenshots and activity logs are stored locally. “So Recall is a feature that captures information. It’s a local Windows functionality, nothing goes into the cloud, everything’s stored locally.”

While the information is stored locally, it might not be a complete solution to the problem. The saved files could also come in handy for a system intruder. The files stored in Recall’s unencrypted SQLite database can still be extracted and accessed, which might not be ideal for certain scenarios.

Microsoft Recall is turned on by default in Windows 11 Copilot + PCs. However, you can disable the functionality from Settings.

Samsung starts testing foldable exclusive OneUI 6.1.1 for Z Fold 6 and Flip 6

Samsung has been busy rolling out the One UI 6.1 update to Galaxy phones in the first half of 2024. Now that most of the compatible models have received the update, the company is shifting its focus to One UI 6.1.1, another major software update that will exclusively target Galaxy Fold and Flip phones and S-series tablets.

New details from tipster Tarun Vats suggest that Samsung has already started internal testing of One UI 6.1.1 for both the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5.

The tipster spotted two new firmware versions of One UI 6.1.1 on Samsung’s servers: F946BXXU2DXF1 and F731BXXU2DXF1 which reportedly correspond to the Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 respectively. It’s important to note that these are internal builds, and Samsung may test several iterations of One UI 6.1.1 before a public beta is available.

Considering this internal testing phase, users will likely have to wait for several weeks to get their hands on the beta version of One UI 6.1.1.

The official release of a stable One UI 6.1.1 update is expected to coincide with the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6, which is rumored to take place at Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event on July 10, 2024.

Although the specific features of One UI 6.1.1 are still unknown, more information about the OS is likely to emerge closer to its release. The update could introduce functionalities that specifically cater to the unique form factors of Samsung’s foldable smartphones.

Apple won’t offer iOS 18’s advanced AI features to previous iPhones except the iPhone 15 Pro models

Apple has been working on several AI features for the iPhone 16 series and above, which were also expected to reach older models with the iOS 18 update. However, Mark Gurman has recently revealed that more advanced AI features will only be rolled out to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

iOS 18 AI Features

Only basic features could be rolled out to older iPhones

According to Mark Gurman, the basic AI functions in iOS 18 will run on-device, while more advanced features require more processing capability and will rely on Apple’s servers.

According to previous reports, Apple is also developing chips to deploy on its servers to run the advanced AI features. Reports have also mentioned that the company plans to use its M series chips in its servers to handle the AI processing.

Not offering the cloud-based AI features to more iPhones could be due to the limited infrastructure at present. Samsung and Google have also kept many of their cutting-edge AI features exclusive to newer models.

iOS 18 will reportedly include AI features like notification summarization (called Greymatter Catch Up), object removal from images, a revamped notes app with speech-to-text conversion and summarization capability, and more. The development also adds new capabilities to Siri, such as the ability to open a specific document, delete an email, summarize an article etc.

Older iPhone models may get some text-based AI features

Notably, most of the text-based features should be classified as the basic features that can also run on-device. So, recent iPhone models that are eligible for iOS 18 (iPhone 11 series and above, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPhone SE (3rd generation)) could get those features. However, it’s not clear yet which exact features will run on-device.

Additionally, Mark Gurman says there could also be some on-device AI-based functionality that the iPhone 15 Pro models and later can handle but not the older models and the non-Pro iPhone 15 models with A16 Bionic. Those features could also remain exclusive to the latest models.

iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 will also get some of the AI features. According to Gurman, the requirement for macOS and iPadOS devices will be at least an M1 chip or a later version. So, Intel-powered Mac devices won’t get the features either. It’s reasonable as the Intel chips and the Bionic chips in older iPhone models lack the capable NPU that’s necessary to run the on-device LLMs.
