New Apple AirTag Successor Reportedly in Testing Phase, Will Likely Release in 2025

Apple is set to release a new version of its popular AirTag item tracker sometime in 2025. Codenamed B589, this update to the 2021 device is currently undergoing testing with manufacturing partners in Asia according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

The new AirTag is expected to have a more powerful chip for better location tracking

Specific details about the new AirTag are not available, but Gurman anticipates a more powerful chip for improved location tracking. This aligns with analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s prediction from October 2023, who also suggested a 2025 release and potential compatibility with Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro technology.

Apple AIrtag

While official features remain under wraps, Gurman has expressed his desire for a louder speaker, longer battery life, and a wallet-friendly version of the AirTag. It’s worth noting that third-party companies already offer wallet-compatible trackers that work with Apple’s Find My network.

Apple has been at the forefront of implementing anti-stalking features in item trackers, and they’ve consistently improved these safeguards over time. This focus on user safety has prompted other manufacturers to adopt similar measures in an effort to prevent misuse of tracking devices.

AYANEO finally spills the beans on its Retro Power Bank

After a half-year wait, AYANEO has finally revealed more details about its Retro Power Bank. The accessory takes inspiration from the classic SNES controller design, offering a unique aesthetic for gamers on the go.

The power bank boasts a 12,000mAh capacity, similar to the batteries found in some of AYANEO’s handheld gaming consoles. While it won’t match the fastest charging options available, it supports USB Type-C Power Delivery (PD) with a maximum output of 45W.

Visually, the Retro Power Bank truly embraces its retro theme. It features two USB Type-C ports positioned to resemble the layout of controller ports on an SNES.

Additionally, it has buttons that appear to mimic the power and reset buttons from the classic console. However, AYANEO has yet to confirm the specific functionalities of these buttons on the power bank.

Another interesting feature is the monochrome OLED display. Though AYANEO hasn’t revealed the display specifications, they claim it can show real-time charging and discharging information for two connected devices simultaneously. It will allow you to easily monitor the charging status of both your power bank and your device.

While an official release date remains elusive, AYANEO says that the Retro Power Bank “is set to launch soon.”

All in all, the AYANEO Retro Power Bank offers a unique blend of practicality and retro aesthetics. With its decent capacity, USB-C PD support, and informative display, it could be a compelling option for gamers on the go, especially those with a fondness for classic consoles.

Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT follows Apple’s lead with internal app distribution

For years, iPhone users have relied on enterprise certificates to install apps that haven’t been blessed by Apple‘s App Store. Now, it appears Huawei‘s HarmonyOS NEXT is taking a similar path.

In a recent developer update, Huawei announced a new method for sideloading apps in its OS. The process involves developers compiling and packaging their apps with certificates and profiles issued internally by their organization.

The final package and a description file are then uploaded to a server or cloud storage for users to download and install directly.

Huawei HarmonyOS NEXT App sideloading

These apps are not intended for a wide consumer audience but rather for specific user groups, such as internal enterprise tools or programs.

According to Huawei, the feature is intended for “HarmonyOS applications that are not suitable or do not want to be publicly released on Huawei App Market.”

Developers will also have the option of leveraging Huawei’s AppGallery Connect (AGC) feature for small-scale distribution through designated channels.

While this grants developers more freedom, it does have its own set of limitations. Currently, the internal application release method only supports HarmonyOS apps built using the Stage model, and features like meta-services are not yet compatible.

Additionally, users will need to manually enable the app for it to run on the device. They can do so by navigating to Settings > System > Enterprise Device and Application Management > Enterprise Application Management and manually grant permission for the app to function.

Huawei’s move isn’t entirely unexpected. Sideloading apps offers great flexibility, especially for developers who want to bypass App Market approval for specific use cases.

However, there could also be some security concerns. Unlike the curated offerings of the App Market, sideloaded apps lack official oversight, increasing the risk of malware or compromised software.

Upcoming CMF Phone (1) could be a rebranded Nothing Phone (2a) with a different design

Nothing‘s sub-brand CMF, which stands for Color, Material, and Finish, is preparing to launch its first smartphone soon. A report from earlier this month suggested it could debut as a budget-range smartphone with a solid list of features. Now, a new leak by tipster @realMlgmXyysd on X (formerly Twitter) has revealed the upcoming CMF smartphone’s specs, indicating that it will likely be a rebranded version of the Nothing Phone (2a).

As per the post on X, the tipster claims that the engineering sample of the CMF phone with model number A015 has a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 SoC, paired with a 5,000mAh battery and 33W fast charging. The report also claims that it will feature a 6.67-inch OLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate.

The phone is said to come with 8GB LPDDR4x RAM and 128/256GB of UFS 2.2 storage. It appears to also feature a MicroSD card for storage expansion. Further, the leak claims that the phone will feature a 50MP primary camera along with another camera in a vertical arrangement on the back. The front will have a 16MP sensor.

The back of the device will feature a replaceable plastic cover, and there won’t be any Glyph lights on this model. The operating system is expected to be the Android 14-based Nothing OS 2.5, and the phone will also support Widevine L1 certification for HD streaming. The phone will be available in Black, Green Blue, and an Indian-exclusive Orange color option.

Additionally, the tipster mentions that the phone is expected to launch in July 2024 with a price range of $249 to $279 USD. This contradicts an earlier report suggesting a budget price of around Rs 12,000 (approximately $140). The specifications seem almost identical to those of the Nothing Phone (2a), suggesting that the CMF phone might be a rebranded version with some design changes. However, it’s important to note that these specs are from an engineering sample, so readers should take this information with caution and stay tuned for further updates.

Samsung Galaxy One UI 7 Android 15 update

The optimization focuses on speeding up the process of entering Doze mode. According to Google, devices running Android 15 will achieve Doze mode 50% faster compared to Android 14.

Doze mode works by restricting background activity and app access to system resources when the phone remains unused for an extended period. It translates to reduced battery drain, particularly for apps that might run unnecessary background processes.

Internal testing by Google suggests that this faster Doze mode activation can lead to up to three hours of additional standby time on certain devices. It’s important to note that the exact improvement may vary depending on the specific phone’s hardware and usage patterns.

The change will apply to all devices receiving the Android 15 update. So you can expect a general battery life improvement across the board.

Additionally, the feature is expected to be carried over to Wear OS 6, the next iteration of the smartwatch operating system based on Android 15. While a release date for Wear OS 6 is not yet confirmed, it’s expected to arrive sometime next year.

The improvements to Doze mode in Android 15 represent a practical step towards better battery management for Android users. While the exact impact on individual devices may differ, the faster transition to Doze mode offers a promising step to achieve extended standby battery life.
