The company entered the tech world with a pair of earphones that were pretty decent but not earth-shattering. Next in the line is the Nothing Phone (1) which, without a doubt, is the most hyped piece of hardware we’ve seen. However, it seems Nothing will not stop at smartphones and accessories and will also venture into the realm of smart home ecosystem.

According to a tweet by tipster Mukul Sharma, Nothing has registered a trademark for Ambient OS from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The tipster further adds that Nothing may launch several AIoT devices after the debut of Phone (1).

For the unversed, Ambient OS is an operating system for smart home products developed by a company called Essential. You may not have heard about the company itself but you might know its founder Andy Rubin, the guy who developed our beloved Android OS and sold it to Google.

Details about the Ambient OS are pretty short. From what we know, it is similar to the operating systems used in products like Amazon Echo and Google Nest. However, Ambient OS is claimed to be a lot better at automating tasks.

A website dedicated to smart home products describes Ambient OS as “IFTTT on steroids”. IFTT (If This Then That) is an application used to automate tasks on smartphones and other devices. You can use Ambient OS to perform automated tasks. For instance, you can command it to turn your living room smart lights on when your phone is connected to your home’s Wi-Fi network or you can have your bedroom’s lights off at a particular time.

Basically, it will make smart home devices perform like gadgets of a utopian dream. Anyways, it will be interesting to see what Carl Pei and his team do with the operating system.

The company had announced the new RK3588 series chipset back in 2020, which is a flagship grade processor for AIoT products. Notably, Rockchip has released this new chip that will be featured in 8 different fields of applications. Furthermore, the exhibition area for the chipset, showcased the RK3588 in around 200 terminal products that also feature other Rockchip solutions like security, education, office, smart home, even industrial applications, and more. The company is also joining hands with 21 other partner brands as well, which include some industry veterans and other big names.

For those unaware, Rockchip is a known Chinese fabless semiconductor based company. It has been selling its SoC for tablets, PCs, IoT based products, and more. Additionally, the new RK3588 succeeds the RK3399Pro as the flagship SoC and is also based on the ARM architecture. Although, the chipmaker also added that the semiconductor industry is still facing material shortages, which will affect the overall production capacity as well. On the other hand, the company has also announced that some of its new chips will also take on the popular Metaverse concept, with some of its products being made for VR.

Due to its growing popularity, tech companies are now focused on creating an ecosystem of products that can be interconnected and controlled right from a smartphone. However, we may have cause to change the name to “Internet of Troubles” next year.

A security researcher and consultant Scott Helme has raised an alarm about the impending issue that may plague a number of gadgets from next year. He told The Register that a lot of smart home and IoT gadgets are going to break down within the next 12 months. These gadgets range from smart TV, set-top box, smart refrigerator and even old Android phones which might lose most of its internet connections in the next year or two.

The reason for the potential failures is that the Certificate Authority root security certificates built into many smart-home and Internet of Things devices are beginning to expire. Such certificates make it possible for digital devices to establish secure online connections with servers. With a move to secure internet connections for almost all internet connections these days, the scale of potentially affected devices looks massive.

The good thing is that these root certificates can be renewed with firmware updates. Sadly, not all of these gadgets get any form of software updates after installation. Also, not all of the gadgets have a companion app or admin interface. Again, most Chinese manufacturers do not offer any form of software supports for their gadgets. So, a day might come when the gadgets may just stop working.

The security researcher also disclosed that several CA Root Certificates are expiring in the next few years. The Root CA certificates usually have a license duration of 20+ years. Thus, since it has been 20+ years since the encrypted Web really started up, it means that most of the certificates have run their full cause and needs renewal.

At this point, it becomes imperative that buyers check for the expiry date of the CA Root Certificates of any smart home/IoT gadget they are buying. Even gadgets that don’t often connect to the internet should be Vetted for expiring/ expired certificates.

It carried the model number AX3600 and offered a great value through its specifications and performance for the price it was sold at. However, since its first launch earlier this morning (28th February 2020), the device has sold out which has caused many anticipating customers to show their disappointment online.

To address the mass dissatisfaction, the General Manager of Xiaomi Group, Liu Xinyu took to Weibo to share the reason for the limited stock. On the Chinese microblogging website, the company’s senior executive stated that the reason for the limited initial stock was the recent Coronavirus outbreak. According to Liu, it is difficult to keep up with demand since the Government had enforced a factory shutdown previously, making it harder to resume work now.

As of right now, Xiaomi is facing issues with various suppliers and other outlets at different levels. The General Manager has assured that stocks will be replenished and sales will start again sometime next month. Currently, no official date for the second sale has been officially announced but Liu Xinyu mentioned that future date will be revealed soon.

For those unaware, the new AX3600 Wi-Fi router from Xiaomi is equipped with Qualcomm’s latest IPQ8071A 6-core chip. Generally, high end routers arrive with 28nm process chips, however, the new chip from Qualcomm is made from a 14nm process.

This is in line with the chipmaker’s latest generation of router chips that also support WiFi 6 standards. Notably, one of the reasons for such a massive hype was the fact that Xiaomi claimed the router provided a network coverage area about two football fields large, which technically kills any possibilities of dead zones in a typical house.

Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, has revealed that all the phones it will release next year priced above ¥2000 (~$285) will have 5G support. He also added that they plan to announce at least 10 5G smartphones next year. The information was revealed this morning at the on-going China Mobile Global Partners Conference.

While $285 does sound great for a 5G phone, we believe most of these phones will sell for at least ¥2399 (~$342). Also, 10 phones sound like a lot, but with a large product portfolio such as Xiaomi’s (including Redmi), that is just shy of half of its annual lineup.

Lei Jun also added that these affordable phones will launch in the first half of the year.

Xiaomi intends to aggressively market 5G next year as it believes it brings a number of benefits. It already launched a 5G+AIoT strategy so as to increase the development and adoption of the use of its AIoT sevices.

Mr. Lei Jun also implored China mobile to speed up the roll-out of its eSIM One Phone Number Dual Terminal service across China. This service allows you to use one phone number on two devices such as your phone and your wearable that supports eSIM. The service is currently only available in 7 cities in China – Tianjin, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, and Chengdu.

The new Xiaomi Watch has an eSIM but because the eSIM One Phone Number Dual Terminal service is available in only a few cities, it may affect the sales of the watch and the development of smartwatches in general.

The highlight of the new TV model is its super thin form factor that sticks to the wall like a painting. True to its design, Xiaomi is also offering a bunch of artworks in 22 genres and from 45 artists to be showcased on its new TV.

The Xiaomi Mi Mural TV has an overall thickness of just 13.9mm with a flat back design. This helps it stay flush to the wall, like a wall painting. Clearly, Xiaomi is looking to attract people who are fans of Samsung’s Frame and LG’s Wallpaper TVs.

Xiaomi managed to achieve this design by incorporating its power supply in the lower host. So, the speakers, motherboard, and even the power supply unit is integrated in the host at the bottom. The TV just houses a 65-inch custom Samsung 4K screen, which ensures its super thin form factor. Further, the frame gets a hint of blue enhancing the overall aesthetics.

The screen and the host are connected by a new MiPort line developed by the company.
This Mi TV is also in line with the company’s recent AIOT initiative and in this regard transforms into a smart home control center. So, you can remotely view and control all of your smart home connected devices on the large screen with ease. Further, the TV is basically a XiaoAI assistant as well and comes with far-field voice recognition support. This enables almost all of the features of the XiaoAi assistant like asking questions, controlling smart home features etc, with just voice commands. Finally, Xiaomi has teamed up with Tencent Cloud for making and receiving video calls through the TV on its large screen.
