According to the latest research from Counterpoint’s IoT Service, smartwatch shipments in India tripled in Q2 2021 compared to the same period last year, with 206% YoY and 18% QoQ growth during the quarter. Affordable offerings, new players, variable customer preferences, and post lockdown demand recovery were the key factors behind the hike in numbers.

The market is getting competitive as more and more players are entering the market, smartwatches are being preferred over traditional watches for their feature-rich interface and compatibility to get paired with smartphones. This in turn has also resulted in the availability of smartwatches in lower price brackets. Indian brands continue to dominate the market, with the top three brands in the Indian smartwatch market being domestic and have over a three-fifths share of the total market.

The market is going to increase further, with more brands lined up to enter the market in the future. Around 10 brands have already entered since the beginning of 2021. The major highlight is the domestic production growth. Samsung is already producing smartwatches in India since June 2020. Other players like realme, and Timex are also exploring options for domestic production as it would help reduce the prices and dependence on imports.

A Research Associate at Counterpoint Research states, “We are witnessing many new launches in the sub-INR 5,000 segment, which saw its contribution rising to 83% in the overall market in Q2 2021, compared to 67% in Q2 2020. Due to this, the ASP (average selling price) of smartwatches decreased by 36% in Q2 2021 compared to the same period last year. We are also seeing features like Voice Assistant, Bluetooth Calling, SpO2, and Blood Pressure Monitor trickling down from high-end models to the low-end ones.”

Some key highlights are:

• boAt Storm leads the best-selling model list for the quarter.
• Marketing is dominated by Indian brands that occupy 70% of the total shipments.

A prototype image has been shared online of the Apple Watch Series 3 that sports a unique possible Smart Connector on the device. A hidden connection port is a regular feature of Apple Watches, and this enables easy internal diagnostics by Apple and other internal tests. The prototype was shared by Guilio Zompetti and indicated the presence of two other ports which were not hidden, with a close semblance to the Apple iPad’s Smart Connector, but much smaller. The Apple Watch has evolved over the years from a simple gadget to a potent smart wearable device in some cases, capable of providing an array of health and fitness advisory and data. The Apple Watch became even more poignant during the coronavirus pandemic. They were transformed into devices capable of predicting the onset of the coronavirus several days before symptoms appeared.

Apple might have experimented on some “smart bands” in earlier revisions of Apple Watch S3.

Authoritative Apple tipster, Zompetti, in his Twitter feed relating to the prototype, says that the prototype is an Apple Watch 3 prototype which the company was testing back then. From the prototype image, it seems Apple was working on including a pair of Smart Connectors which may function for blood pressure monitoring. The connectors are located where the band of the watch would sit, meaning it would work with the smart band to perform the function. However, the optics of how the blood pressure sensor will interface with the Smart Band is unknown, as the tipster did not provide any additional information in this direction.

Apple is getting set to launch the Watch Series 7 but we can’t say if this feature will make it into the model.

Apple is likely to use flexible or curved screens for iWatch as a smart watches device. Apple was said to be almost come with one of the screen supplier to manufacture these components.

According to the Korea Herald Media, LG will becoming the vendors for  flexible display supplier for Apple. For your information, the South Korean company has already released a smart phone with a flexible OLED display, LG G Flex.

Even so, LG said it will not be the main supplier. According to rumors initially, Apple has appointed Taiwanese display manufacturer, RiTDisplay to produce the flexible screen. While LG will be the second source of supply for the iWatch flexible screen.

Apple is also rumored to have talked to Samsung about this flexible display production. However, they fail to reach an agreement. It is not known which party ultimately decided to withdraw from the negotiations.

Previously, Apple is rumored to be tested for three screen size of iWatch thats the 1.4 inch, 1.5 inch and 1.6 inches. All three prototype device is made from plastic OLED screen. Apple will not release three of those products, but choose one that is considered the most appropriate screen size.

Different from its competitors, Apple seems a little late in releasing this wearable product. Sony and Samsung have released their version of smart watches and it is believed there will be more vendors soon to make smartwatch devices. While, Apple is rumored to be released smart watches in 2014.
