PayPal, one of the pioneers in the online payment world, has finally taken the plunge to integrate its credit and debit cards with Apple Pay. This move comes years after most other financial institutions embraced Apple’s wallet system, leading many to ask, “What took PayPal so long?”

For years, PayPal users could only look on as folks with cards from other banks breezily tapped their iPhones to make purchases. But now, a new banner in the PayPal app home screen prompts users to add their PayPal cards to Apple Wallet. Users can also manually add their cards through the Wallet app if they prefer.

This integration was hinted at last year when PayPal announced a three-part plan to improve its adoption of Apple Pay. It’s a sign that PayPal is finally catching up with the current tech landscape, acknowledging that people want seamless options. But the delay suggests that PayPal, once an industry frontrunner, might be slowing down in terms of technological adaptability.

Interestingly, Venmo—PayPal’s sister service—has not yet confirmed its support for Apple Pay, even though this was expected as part of PayPal’s broader Apple Pay integration strategy. It adds a layer of curiosity about how synchronized the two services really are, and whether Venmo’s delay will further impact PayPal’s competitive edge.

Last year, Apple announced its buy now, pay later service called Apple Pay Later following the popularity of services like Affirm, Afterpay, and Klarna, among others in the US.

Now, the company has finally launched the Apple Pay Later service in the United States, which will allow users to split the payment into four installments over the course of six weeks.

With this new financing service, the Cupertino-based technology giant is promising a seamless and secure way to split the cost of a purchase without paying any interest on it. The user will be able to apply for Apple Pay Later loans of $50 to $1,000 for online and in-app purchases on the iPhone or iPad through Apple Pay.

Commenting about this, Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said, “Apple Pay Later was designed with our users’ financial health in mind, so it has no fees and no interest, and can be used and managed within Wallet, making it easier for consumers to make informed and responsible borrowing decisions.”

Currently, the service will be available only to randomly selected users who will get early access to a prerelease version. The company adds that it is planning to offer this feature to all eligible users in the coming months.

Earlier this year, in May, Google announced the new Google Wallet with a bunch of new features, including support for adding digital IDs, but the feature wasn’t supported at first and the plan was to add it at a later date.

Now, it appears that Google Wallet finally has added support for storing digital IDs and driver’s licenses on the application for selected states in the United States.

In a new update for Google Wallet, which appears to be rolling out with Google Play Services v48.22 for December, the company has suggested opening up Digital IDs as a part of the beta feature on the application.

The changelog posted to the Google System Updates support page reads: “[Phone] Beta feature to allow users from selected US state(s) to digitize their state ID/driver’s license into the Google Wallet for convenient, private and secure presentation.”

It says that the feature will be limited to selected US states, which means that most states in the US won’t be supporting this new feature, at least not initially. As of now, there are no details available about which states are included in the test or how users can enroll in the beta test when it launches. The beta version may simply be available for those enrolled in the Play Services beta via the Play Store.

Apple has also introduced support for Digital IDs on Apple Wallet, which is currently limited to three states, but nine more states have committed to supporting the feature at a future date. We expect a similar situation for Google Wallet, where it will support selected states at first and then add support for more in the future.
