<p>However, with premium price tags and the ecosystem still in flux, the question remains: Is it worth investing in AR technology today?</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-2-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-674046" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-2-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-2-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-2-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-2-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-2-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-2.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3><strong>Current AR Hardware Landscape</strong></h3>

<p>The AR headset market is more competitive than ever, with tech giants and emerging players refining their offerings. Apple, Meta, Google, Samsung, and several Chinese manufacturers have established themselves as industry leaders, each taking a unique approach to AR integration.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/apple/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple</a>’s Vision Pro set a high benchmark when it launched in early 2024, and its successor, expected later this year, promises better battery life and a lighter form factor. Apple&#8217;s spatial computing ecosystem continues to expand, with more developers optimizing apps for visionOS.</p>

<p>Meta remains a dominant force with its Quest lineup, now headlined by the Quest 3 and the upgraded Quest 3s. These headsets offer improved processing power, better passthrough AR capabilities, and a growing library of mixed-reality experiences, making them appealing to both casual users and professionals.</p>

<p>Interestingly, the landscape of AR hardware is shifting, with proper headsets becoming less popular as users increasingly favor lightweight AR glasses. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/microsoft/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Microsoft</a>, once a significant player in the AR space, has discontinued its HoloLens 2 without releasing a successor, signaling a move away from bulky enterprise headsets.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="1000" height="562" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Samsung-Mobile-XR-Project-Moohan.jpg?x44794" alt="Samsung-Mobile-XR-Project-Moohan" class="wp-image-674047" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Samsung-Mobile-XR-Project-Moohan.jpg 1000w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Samsung-Mobile-XR-Project-Moohan-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Samsung-Mobile-XR-Project-Moohan-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Samsung-Mobile-XR-Project-Moohan-696x391.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Samsung-Mobile-XR-Project-Moohan-747x420.jpg 747w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure></div>

<p>Meanwhile, Meta is at the forefront of AR glasses development with its Orion project, first unveiled last year and expected to launch for consumers in the near future. Unlike traditional AR headsets, Orion glasses aim to provide a more seamless, everyday wearable experience, blurring the line between virtual and physical worlds without requiring a heavy head-mounted display.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/google/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google</a> is making a return to the AR and VR space with its Android XR platform, a dedicated ecosystem designed for next-generation immersive experiences. Built to support a wide range of devices, Android XR is expected to provide a strong foundation for developers looking to create AR applications with deep Google integration. <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/samsung/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Samsung</a>, one of Google’s key partners, is making significant strides with Project Moohan, its <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2025/01/23/galaxy-xr-headset-samsungs-project-moohan-revealed-at-unpacked-2025/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">first Android XR headset</a>.</p>

<p>Rumored to offer a premium design and high-end features, this device is expected to challenge Apple’s Vision Pro while benefiting from Google’s software expertise. If Samsung’s approach to foldables is anything to go by, Project Moohan could set a new standard for Android-powered AR headsets.</p>

<p>Chinese manufacturers like XREAL (formerly Nreal), <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/category/oppo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Oppo</a>, and TCL have gained traction with lightweight AR glasses designed for entertainment and productivity. These devices, often more affordable than their Western counterparts, rely on external processing via smartphones or dedicated computing units.</p>

<h3><strong>Software and Services</strong></h3>

<p>AR content and applications have matured significantly in 2025, making the hardware more compelling. Developers are focusing on key areas that showcase the strengths of AR. Productivity and collaboration apps like Microsoft Mesh, Zoom AR, and Apple’s Freeform AR enable seamless remote meetings, holographic presentations, and collaborative workspaces.</p>

<p>Gaming has gained momentum with titles that blend virtual elements into the real world, while platforms like Disney+ and Netflix are experimenting with immersive AR content for interactive storytelling.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-3-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="Apple Vision Pro" class="wp-image-674048" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-3-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-3-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-3-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-3-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-3-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-3-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Apple-Vision-Pro-3.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Brands are leveraging AR for virtual try-ons and 3D product visualization, making online shopping more interactive. Companies like Peloton and Apple have integrated AR-based guided workouts and fitness coaching, enhancing the at-home exercise experience.</p>

<p>Google’s Android XR platform could play a crucial role in accelerating software development for AR, offering an open ecosystem that encourages innovation and cross-device compatibility. Developers will benefit from Google&#8217;s extensive suite of tools, including AI-driven enhancements that can improve real-world object recognition, voice interactions, and spatial awareness.</p>

<p>The potential synergy between Android XR and Samsung’s Project Moohan suggests that AR adoption may soon become more accessible to a wider audience beyond Apple’s ecosystem.</p>

<h3><strong>What’s Next for AR?</strong></h3>

<p>While AR headsets have come a long way, they are still evolving. The next few years will likely bring major advancements in key areas. More compact and lightweight designs are in development, as bulky headsets remain a major barrier to mainstream adoption.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Meta-Orion-Glasses-1024x576.webp?x44794" alt="Meta Orion Glasses" class="wp-image-674049" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Meta-Orion-Glasses-1024x576.webp 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Meta-Orion-Glasses-300x169.webp 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Meta-Orion-Glasses-768x432.webp 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Meta-Orion-Glasses-1536x864.webp 1536w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Meta-Orion-Glasses-696x392.webp 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Meta-Orion-Glasses-1068x601.webp 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Meta-Orion-Glasses-747x420.webp 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Meta-Orion-Glasses.webp 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Advances in optics, battery technology, and micro-LED displays should help create sleeker and more comfortable wearables. Battery life remains a challenge, but manufacturers are exploring new energy-efficient chips and external battery solutions.</p>

<p>Faster connectivity and generative AI will enhance real-time interactions, making AR applications more fluid and intuitive. High costs remain a hurdle, but as production scales and competition increases, prices should gradually decrease.</p>

<h2>First Meta AR Headset Launching in 2027?</h2>

<p>The news arrives from <em><a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-01-21/meta-hardware-plans-oakley-and-ar-like-glasses-apple-watch-and-airpods-rivals?sref=10lNAhZ9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bloomberg</a></em>&#8216;s Mark Gurman (via <em><a href="https://www.engadget.com/wearables/report-meta-could-release-its-first-true-ar-headset-as-soon-as-2027-222502610.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Engadget</a></em>), who shared new information regarding Meta&#8217;s new tech products. According to sources close to the matter, the tech giant is developing three new smart glasses and even has a roadmap for the release of its true augmented reality glasses as well. That&#8217;s not all, Meta is apparently working on integrating AI powered tools in other wearable and hearable gadgets like smartwatches, smart bands, and earbuds.</p>

<p>Back in early 2024, the company even partnered up with Ray-Ban to release the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/02/07/ray-ban-meta-smart-glasses-version-2-0-software-update/">Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses Version 2.0</a> (internally dubbed Supernova). Now, it seems like a Supernova 2 model is also being developed, which is the successor to this collab. The new report adds that the existing models will be introduced in new markets as well. </p>

<p>While an exact launch date is still unclear, Gurman claims that Meta has plans to launch its true AR headset, which carries the Orion codename, as early as 2027. The company might soon collaborate with other major brands like the Luxottica Group. Furthermore, another AR headset is internally referred to as the Hypernova, which might cost over 1,000 US Dollars owing to its advanced features. This is all the information, so stay tuned for more.</p>

<p>The world of technology is is evolving at an unprecedented pace. After a decade centered on smartphones, artificial intelligence and mixed reality have captured the spotlight. Moreover, we expect these two technologies to combine in the near future, and leading to even greater results than what <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/vision-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Apple Vision Pro</a> offers today. However, how does this expectation reflects to consumer behavior? Recent IDC research suggests a highly promising outlook for AR/VR headsets in 2024. Here are the details&#8230;</p>

<h2><strong>After 2023 Dip, AR/VR <strong>Headset</strong> Market Set for Explosive Growth</strong></h2>

<p>Despite the existence of AR/VR headsets for some time, the selection of mainstream products remains limited. Until recently, <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/2024/01/02/meta-quest-2-price-drop/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Meta&#8217;s Quest models</a> dominated the field. However, 2023 signaled a shift with Apple&#8217;s announcement of its upcoming mixed reality headset, the Vision Pro. While this development promises to energize the industry, it appears to have temporarily dampened sales. In fact, global AR/VR headset sales declined by 23.5% in 2023. This drop is likely due to consumers holding off on purchases in anticipation of the Vision Pro&#8217;s release.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/ar-vr-headset-market-sales-1024x576.jpg?x44794" alt="" class="wp-image-612443" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/ar-vr-headset-market-sales-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/ar-vr-headset-market-sales-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/ar-vr-headset-market-sales-768x432.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/ar-vr-headset-market-sales-696x392.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/ar-vr-headset-market-sales-1068x601.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/ar-vr-headset-market-sales-747x420.jpg 747w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/ar-vr-headset-market-sales.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Of course it&#8217;s expected that expectations will change significantly in 2024. Following the increase in the number of people purchasing Apple Vision Pro and the mainstream adoption of this technology, it is anticipated that more people will turn to alternatives. IDC estimates that sales are expected to increase by 44.2%, reaching 9.7 million units this year. Moreover, this figure is expected to continue to grow exponentially in the coming years, potentially reaching 36 million units by the end of 2028.</p>

<p>Remember, this is nothing more than a prediction and focuses on the current dynamics of the market. In 2023, a staggering 1.2 billion smartphones were sold globally. This widespread adoption reflects the centrality of smartphones in our lives, from essential communication to financial transactions. If AR/VR technology experiences similar significant advancements in the coming years, achieving the transformative impact of smartphones, it&#8217;s plausible that sales figures could reach comparable levels.</p>

<p>When you splurge on the latest tech, like the <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/apple-vision-pro">Apple Vision Pro</a> headset, it&#8217;s not just about the initial price tag. Owners are quickly finding out that caring for their high-tech gear can come with a hefty cost. If you happen to drop your headset and the glass cracks, you&#8217;re looking at a repair bill of $799. But, if you&#8217;ve invested in<a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/applecare"> AppleCare+</a>, that cost drops to $299.</p>

<h3>AppleCare+ seems like a necessity for a device like this, and Apple knows this</h3>

<p>Damage beyond the glass? <a href="http://gizmochina.com/category/apple">Apple</a>&#8216;s repair estimate climbs to a whopping $2,399. Again, AppleCare+ subscribers are in luck, paying the same $299. Seems like AppleCare+ might be a wise choice for the accident-prone or just the cautious, as it also covers battery replacements when the battery dips below 80% of its original charge.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="575" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Apple-Vision-Pro-5-1024x575.jpg?x44794" alt="Apple Vision Pro" class="wp-image-591734" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Apple-Vision-Pro-5-1024x575.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Apple-Vision-Pro-5-300x169.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Apple-Vision-Pro-5-768x431.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Apple-Vision-Pro-5-696x391.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Apple-Vision-Pro-5-1068x600.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Apple-Vision-Pro-5-748x420.jpg 748w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Apple-Vision-Pro-5.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Speaking of AppleCare+, snagging this extra protection for your Vision Pro will run you $499. This package is akin to what you&#8217;d get for a high-end <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/macbook">Mac</a>, and it offers unlimited repairs for accidental damage, plus round-the-clock access to Apple experts.</p>

<p>But before you need any repairs, the initial cost of the Vision Pro, with all the bells and whistles, reaches nearly $4,800. That&#8217;s a lot of dough for a headset, even one as advanced as this. It starts at $3,499, and upgrades like 1TB of storage, prescription lenses, and a battery clip all add to the total.</p>

<p>So, if you&#8217;re thinking about joining the Vision Pro club, consider the full financial picture. Accidents happen, and the costs can stack up almost as fast as the features on this high-tech headgear.</p>

<p>Apple is gearing up to unveil its <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/mixed-reality-headset">Mixed Reality Headset</a> soon. As the rumours around the headset continue to swirl, many are wondering how this product will fit into the broader market for virtual and augmented reality devices. Some analysts predict that Apple&#8217;s entry into the space could be a &#8220;game-changer,&#8221; given the company&#8217;s history of releasing innovative and stylish products that capture the public&#8217;s imagination and interest. However, others remain skeptical that the headset will be able to overcome the barriers that have kept other mixed-reality devices from gaining traction in the consumer market. Latest reports state that Apple is integrating its other services, such as Fitness+ with its mixed reality headset, which will allow users to work out in Virtual Reality. The company might even integrate some sports applications with the VR/AR ecosystem, letting users enjoy the thrill of playing sports from the comfort of their homes. </p>

<h2>Apple&#8217;s Venture into VR &amp; AR is highly anticipated </h2>

<p>One key challenge facing the Apple mixed reality headset will be its price point. At an expected cost of $3,000, the device is significantly more expensive than other <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/virtual-reality">VR</a> and <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/augmented-reality">AR</a> headsets currently on the market. While some enthusiasts and professionals may be willing to pay a premium for Apple&#8217;s sleek design and powerful features, many consumers may simply drop the idea of the headset at such a high price tag. It remains to be seen whether Apple can convince a broad audience to invest in this new technology.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img loading="lazy" width="1024" height="571" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/gsmarena_000-1024x571.jpg?x44794" alt="Apple" class="wp-image-530994" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/gsmarena_000-1024x571.jpg 1024w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/gsmarena_000-300x167.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/gsmarena_000-768x428.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/gsmarena_000-696x388.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/gsmarena_000-1068x595.jpg 1068w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/gsmarena_000-753x420.jpg 753w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/gsmarena_000.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Another question mark hanging over the Apple mixed reality headset is the broader ecosystem of apps and services that will be available for the device. While it&#8217;s clear that the headset will have a strong focus on <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tag/gaming">gaming</a>, fitness, sports, and productivity, it&#8217;s unclear how well existing apps and services will translate to a mixed-reality environment. Apple&#8217;s track record of encouraging developers to create innovative apps for its devices is certainly promising, but it remains to be seen whether the company can create a compelling ecosystem that will entice users to keep coming back to the headset that costs a fortune.</p>

<p><a href="http://gizmochina.com/tags/apple">Apple</a> is now reportedly planning to enter the field of AR headsets soon. It has been claimed that the brand is working on its upcoming AR/VR headset and Apple will launch the gadget this spring, ahead of the WWDC 2023 event. If this comes out to be true, then Apple will surely overtake <a href="http://gizmochina.com/tags/samsung">Samsung</a> in terms of launching the AR headset. Both brands are working on their very own AR/VR headset and as of now, it seems that Apple may launch one earlier. Let&#8217;s look into the information in more detail.</p>

<p>According to well-known insider Mark Gurman of <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2023-01-08/when-will-apple-launch-the-reality-pro-mixed-reality-headset-apple-2023-devices-lcnfzkc7">Bloomberg</a>, Apple&#8217;s next AR/VR headset will go on sale sometime in the fall of this year. Another Apple expert, Ming Chi-Kuo, predicted a few days ago that the company would release its AR/VR headgear before the end of 2023. Samsung has not yet announced an AR/VR headset, despite Apple being close to doing so.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-full"><img loading="lazy" width="857" height="443" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/image-36.png?x44794" alt="Apple AR headset" class="wp-image-507700" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/image-36.png 857w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/image-36-300x155.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/image-36-768x397.png 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/image-36-696x360.png 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/image-36-813x420.png 813w" sizes="(max-width: 857px) 100vw, 857px" /></figure></div>

<p>Gurman claims that Apple has already sent a few developers the prototype hardware to test. The product, however, is far from finished, and it appears that Apple still has a lot of problems to address. According to Gurman, earlier predictions that Apple&#8217;s AR/VR headset might be unveiled in January were accurate. The company had a lot of work to do on the product and many bugs to fix, thus the schedule shifted. Apple is focusing on launching the product as soon as possible. The brand is also making sure that there won&#8217;t be any further delay in the launch.</p>

<p>That concludes our discussion of Apple&#8217;s upcoming augmented reality headset. By entering the market for AR headsets sooner than Samsung, it appears that the brand will inevitably surpass Samsung. There have been practically no leaks about Samsung&#8217;s future AR/VR headset. Samsung will, however, undoubtedly soon release its own headset as well. What do you think about this? Please let us know by leaving a comment below in your own words.</p>

<p>Now, a new report has surfaced online which claims that the upcoming Apple VR headset will come powered by the Apple Silicon&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-m1">M1 processor</a>. It also goes on to add that the device will have a micro OLED display.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-436608 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-11-124300.png?x44794" alt="Apple AR Headset" width="682" height="385" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-11-124300.png 682w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Screenshot-2022-01-11-124300-300x169.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px" /></p>
<p>Sources aware of the development in the supply chain <a href="https://english.etnews.com/20220224200001">have said</a> that Apple is entering the second round of pre-production tests on the AR headset.</p>
<p>Earlier, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had said that the Cupertino-based giant will launch the headset “with the same computing power level as the <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/apple-mac">Mac</a>,” with its chip design being the major difference between the AR headset from other brands.</p>
<p>While the launch date for the Apple <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/ar-headset">AR headset</a> isn&#8217;t known at this time, reports indicate that the device could go official sometime in the fourth quarter of this year.</p>
<p>South Korean tech giant Samsung is also working on its first AR headset and the company has reportedly formed a task force that is focused on working with <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/microsoft">Microsoft</a> to develop further AR headsets.</p>
<p>Samsung&#8217;s AR headset is said to use hologram technology and has been developed over an extended period by the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology. It is said to be based on the Exynos processor and will use Google&#8217;s <a href="https://www.gizmochina.com/tag/android">Android</a> as the operating system.</p>

The upcoming headset will apparently offer a wide range of advanced AR (Augmented Reality) experiences.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-141264 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Star-Wars-AR-Headset.jpg?x44794" alt="Apple" width="680" height="442" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Star-Wars-AR-Headset.jpg 680w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Star-Wars-AR-Headset-300x195.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></p>
<p>As per the note from Kuo (Via <a href="https://appleinsider.com/articles/21/03/09/kuo-apple-ar-headset-to-feature-15-cameras-for-pass-through-vr-experience-biometrics" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><em>AppleInsider</em></a>), the Cupertino based giant will integrate a total of 15 image sensors in the AR headset, which is also rumored to launch in 2022. At the moment, the current generation of VR headsets typically features anywhere between two and five cameras for interacting with its surrounding environment or performing image pass through operations. Eight of the camera modules will be supplied primarily by Largan.</p>
<p>These sensors will be placed around the headset to facilitate a pass through VR experience. In simpler terms, the technology will allow users to &#8220;see through&#8221; the enclosed device by feeding exterior images onto the display on the inside of the headset. It is reported that the Apple AR headset will feature high resolution MicroLED display panels. Furthermore, the company is expected to bring &#8220;innovative biometrics&#8221; that will work through six additional modules.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter wp-image-357743 size-full" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/39097-74755-37323-70027-32573-55893-magic-leap-header-xl-xl-xl.jpg?x44794" alt="Apple" width="870" height="485" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/39097-74755-37323-70027-32573-55893-magic-leap-header-xl-xl-xl.jpg 870w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/39097-74755-37323-70027-32573-55893-magic-leap-header-xl-xl-xl-300x167.jpg 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/39097-74755-37323-70027-32573-55893-magic-leap-header-xl-xl-xl-768x428.jpg 768w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/39097-74755-37323-70027-32573-55893-magic-leap-header-xl-xl-xl-696x388.jpg 696w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/39097-74755-37323-70027-32573-55893-magic-leap-header-xl-xl-xl-753x420.jpg 753w" sizes="(max-width: 870px) 100vw, 870px" /></p>
<p>Unfortunately, it is unknown if this biometric system is similar to the Face ID, capturing facial data, or other forms of authentication related to facial features and their movement. Interestingly, this feature might also have other applications in VR as well. The final camera module will be installed for environmental detection. As per Kuo, the first iteration of the rumored headset will launch sometime next year and will feature a new processor and an onboard storage. This would make it portable and capable of working independently from iPhones or Macs.</p>

According to fresh reports, Google is working on a standalone AR headset which may take on Microsoft&#8217;s Hololens.</p>
<p>Google&#8217;s standalone AR headset is internally referred to as Google A65 and will be powered by a custom-chip from Qualcomm. The chipset is said to be one of the new QSC series made by Qualcomm for Internet of Things (IoT) devices.</p>
<p>The exact chipset has not been confirmed since development is still at an early stage. However, there are two main ones in consideration at the moment.</p>
<p>There is the Qualcomm QSC603 which is a quad-core ARM SoC with two Kryo 300 Gold cores and two Kryo 300 Silver cores clocked at 1.6GHz and 1.7GHz respectively. Its GPU is the Adreno 615 and it has support for Tensorflow and Android Neural Networks API.</p>
<p>There is also the QSC605 which has eight cores in a 2+6 configuration. The two cores are Kryo 300 Gold cores clocked at 2.5GHz and there are six Kryo 300 Silver cores clocked at 1.7GHz.</p>
<p><img loading="lazy" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-191734" src="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Meta-AR-Headset.png?x44794" alt="Meta AR Headset" width="856" height="462" srcset="https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Meta-AR-Headset.png 856w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Meta-AR-Headset-300x162.png 300w, https://www.gizmochina.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Meta-AR-Headset-768x415.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 856px) 100vw, 856px" /></p>
<p>Google is reported to be working together with Taiwanese manufacturer, Quanta, on the AR headset. For those who don&#8217;t know, Quanta made the Pixel C for Google. It is also making a headset for another company called Meta but which will be tethered to a PC. Above is a render of the Meta headset.</p>

<p>The specific features and design of the headset are still unknown and there is no news on when it will be launched. We also do not know if it will be available to the general public right away or developers only like the Google Glass.</p>
