BOE’s Patent Prowess Grows, Surpassing LG and Closing In on Samsung

This company, which specializes in the development and production of display panels, collaborates with many manufacturers, including Apple. Who knows, maybe even the device you’re reading this on was produced by them. Considering BOE is ranked first in the world by shipments of LCD panels for smartphones, tablets, notebooks, monitors, and TVs, this possibility is quite high. Furthermore, the number of display patents BOE holds in the USA further confirms their success. Here are the details…

BOE Surpasses LG to Become Second Largest Display Patent Holder in US

We know that BOE is already a significant player in the global display market. They produce screens for a wide range of products, from entry-level to flagship devices. However, this success is no accident. According to a South Korean lawyer, BOE ranks second in the number of display panel patents registered in the US, only behind Samsung Display. This is an impressive feat, especially considering the US is a major market for display panels.

BOE’s patent portfolio includes patents on a wide range of display technologies, such as OLED displays, LCD displays, and touch displays. The company has also been granted patents for its display manufacturing processes. The companies strong patent portfolio gives it a competitive advantage in the US market. It also allows the company to license its patents to other companies, which generates additional revenue.

However, it is important to note that BOE’s patents have been challenged by other companies, such as Samsung Display. In 2020, 2021, and 2022, BOE had 280, 300, and 337 patents rejected by the US Patent and Trademark Office due to Samsung Display’s existing patents. Of course, encountering issues with new technologies is common. Even Apple sometimes faces patent lawsuits. It doesn’t seem like these challenges will stop BOE.

In fact, experts suggest that if the number of patent applications continues to increase at this rate, BOE might surpass Samsung Display in a short time. If this happens, the South Korean manufacturer would lose its leadership position to a Chinese company. Nonetheless, all we can do is wait and see how things unfold.

BOE unveils an array of new display techs; Mini-LEDs, flexible AMOLED & more

The International Display Technology and Application Innovation Exhibition (DIC EXPO 2020) opened in Shanghai, China on June 22 and will run till June 24. At the event, Chinese display manufacturer BOE Technologies has unveiled several innovative display technologies and solutions such as flexible AMOLED, Mini-LEDs, and under-screen cameras.

The most captivating products are the expected 27-inch Mini LED alongside a 15.6-inch Mini LED both of which attracted great attention. BOE’s Mini LED products can achieve a million-level ultra-high contrast ratio and provide a more pure and natural display effect.

Mini-LED is a new display technology that promises improved contrast ratios and deeper blacks compared to LCD panels that are lit with regular LEDs (light-emitting diodes). As the name suggests, mini-LEDs are a lot smaller than regular LEDs. Diodes that are smaller than 0.2 mm are generally classed as mini-LEDs.

The emerging display technology is touted to be the next-generation display technology and it is presently the focus of local manufacturers in China. There are even speculations that Apple is planning to utilise Mini LEDs on its upcoming products in order to solve the problem of OLED burn-in and improve product durability. A shift to mini LEDs will also help to reduce its dependence on Samsung, the dominant player in the OLED industry.

Also, the company unveiled a 32:9 ultra-wide OLED curved display, an outer folding screen and a flexible OLED notebook display with a narrow bezel.

Yet another innovative product showcased at the tech show is a flexible screen with under-screen camera technology. The under-screen camera technology erases the style of using a notch or hole-punch design and also delivers an immersive user experience.

Furthermore, the company took the wraps off a 3D face recognition technology implemented under the display which offers users a new, smarter and more convenient way of unlocking gadgets using face detection.

Finally, BOE also brought a 75-inch, 110-inch 8K BD Cell display, innovatively applying total reflection display technology to tablet computers, e-books, TVs, outdoor advertising machines, bus stop signs and other fields.

BOE’s 6.18-inch OLED Screen Looks Like The iPhone X’s & Is Beautiful!

When we talk of OLED displays, Samsung holds the ace and is currently the main supplier of OLED panels to other OEMs who uses OLED panels on their smartphones. Apple is one of the major clients for Samsung’s OLED panels as the U.S tech giant used OLED screen for the first time on the iPhone X. The growing popularity of Samsung’s OLED panels has precipitated companies like JDI and BOE, two leading names in LCD displays to shift towards OLED panel manufacture.

We have now spotted what are said to be photos of BOE’s latest OLED display prototype. This is coming up at a time there are speculations that more smartphone would be launched using the full-screen OLED technology. It was recently reported that BOE was eyeing a deal with Apple for OLED panels. That may not be a difficult deal to seal because Apple will no doubt like to deal with rival Samsung from a distance.

The newly leaked BOE’s OLED panels look very much like the iPhone X’s. Perhaps, BOE is trying to prove a point that it could do something better. Well, we can’t really say if it is better than Samsung’s OLED displays. As for the specification, the display comes in at 6.18 inches with a resolution of 2992 x 1440 pixels. The screen also has a PPI of 537 and 390 nits brightness and is made from AMOLED. BOE’s display would naturally be expected to be cheaper than Samsung’s.

China’s BOE Display Technology Shows Off Flexible AMOLED Displays

One of the leading names in display technology is Chinese firm – BOE display technology. The company has always dedicated itself to advancing innovation in semiconductor display technologies such as TFT-LCD and AMOLED, for the purpose of providing quality display products and services. Manufacturing LCD panels have been BOE’s stronghold where it utilises its proprietary (Advanced Super Dimension Switch (ADSDS) technology for liquid-crystal (LCD) panels. This technology is characterized by ultra-high definition, ultra-slim bezel, high contrast-ratio, ultra-thinness, integrated touch solution, great energy efficiency, and environmental friendliness but is restricted to LCD panels.

However, in an industry where there is a rapid shift to OLED displays, BOE has unveiled its sixth generation of flexible AMOLED production line in a ceremony held in Chengdu, China. The production line is the wold’s second production line for flexible AMOLED panels and China’s first. The line is expected to break the monopoly enjoyed by Korean companies Samsung, LG and others. Already, there are indications that Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and other OEMs are showing interests in patronizing the BOE AMOLED display.

The company showcased a wide variety of flexible AMOLED panel designs at the ceremony and there is even a video showing all the samples they’ve got. As you’d expected OLED panels with 18:9 aspect ratio where included, as well as thin, paper-like foldable screens. There was even a display exhibited which looked like the iPhone X display. With this development, Samsung is likely going to be the hardest hit since it enjoys a large share of patronage.
