While TSMC is the largest contract chipmaker in the world, Samsung Electronics has been hard at work to topple the Taiwanese firm. Now, the South Korean tech giant has just bagged itself chip orders from big names like Cisco and Google.

According to an ETNews report, Samsung had received a Cisco contract earlier this year to design and manufacture chips. These chips will be used in Cisco’s next generation telecommunications network, as stated by a source close to the matter. Similarly, Samsung has also managed to secure orders from the search engine giant Google.

The company will be design and manufacture semiconductor chips that will be used for sensors that can monitor and track body movements. Generally, foundries manufacture chips that have already designed but these new chips will be custom made to offer specific features and technologies to both firms. In other words, these new chips are made from the ground up, tailored specifically for both Cisco and Google.

This will have Samsung both design the chip and mass produce it. Cisco is the world’s largest network equipment manufacturer in the world with sales reaching $50 billion every year and with Google aiming at expanding its IoT lineup, Samsung will likely face additional orders. Meaning, the newly acquired orders could have the South Korean brand take a step closer in also becoming the world’s largest foundry as well.

With the US cracking down hard on Huawei and pressurizing the company on multiple fronts, it seems that the smartphone vendor has started to fight back and is targetting multiple brands like HP, Verizon, and even Cisco with patent infringement.

A few recent changes in the US Government’s FRAND agreements (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory) have enabled Huawei to sue the aforementioned companies. In other words, the amendments have made it easier for Huawei to target these companies. The Chinese tech giant’s response to the US sanctions against starts from patent infringement claims Verizon for its own technology and products that it had acquired from Cisco and Hewlett-Packard.

At the moment, Huawei is demanding royalty payments for hundreds of patents. Notably, sources claimed that this event might also be leveraged by the Chinese company to compel court discovery on Verizon’s and its suppliers’ confidential information. In simplers terms, Huawei would be able to gain in-depth access to its competitor’s products and technology.

The turn of events was unexpected, to say the least, as the US Government, in particular, did not consider that Huwaei would turn the US patent law against American companies. Huawei was added to the US ‘Entity List’ last year. This forced American companies to cease their businesses with the Chinese telecom giant. Now, after a year, the ban has been further extended for another year, in addition to plans that will cut off Huawei from global chip suppliers like TSMC. To counterattack these harsh measures, China is readying its own ‘Unreliable Entity List’ according to a report by Global Times.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce’s (MOFCOM) Unreliable Entity List will include “foreign organizations, individuals and companies that block or shut supply chains, or take discriminatory measures for non-commercial reasons, whose actions endanger the business of Chinese companies as well as global consumers and companies”.

The listed companies will have to “face necessary legal and administrative measures and the Chinese public will also be warned against it to reduce risks”.

According to insiders, the Chinese government is targeting the following US companies that are largely dependent on China.

• Apple
• Qualcomm
• Cisco
• Boeing

The problem for Huawei begun to pile up in early 2018 when AT&T dropped its plans to sell the Mate 10 Pro on account of pressure from the US government. This was later followed by warnings from the FBI, CIA, NSA, and three other US intelligence agencies to stop using or buying products from Huawei and ZTE. 

Also, these companies were later banned from supplying telecom equipment for 5G infrastructure. The US officials even warned other countries to avoid using technologies from these two brands.

Then in May of 2019, Huawei was finally added to the ‘Entity List’ and this led the company to lose its GMS (Google Mobile Services) license. Since then, the sales of Huawei and Honor branded smartphones tanked globally but it surged high in China.

Huawei has developed its own HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) to fill the void left by GMS for global markets. However, the company’s AppGallery still lacks a number of most-used apps and most users depend on Google apps, which are not available on new Huawei/Honor smartphones anymore.
