At MWC Barcelona 2023 today, Google Cloud has announced a new product that aims to help communications service providers (CSPs) automate and optimize their network operations. The product, called Telecom Network Automation, is a cloud-based solution that leverages Google’s expertise in Kubernetes, artificial intelligence (AI) and open source software.

Telecom Network Automation is based on Nephio, an open source project that Google created and led on under the Linux Foundation. Nephio enables CSPs to use common automation templates to manage their network infrastructure and functions across multiple clouds and vendors. Nephio also uses AI-powered control loops to monitor and adjust network performance based on user-defined intents.

According to Google Cloud, Telecom Network Automation can help CSPs reduce operational costs, improve service quality and accelerate time-to-market for new services. The product can also support various use cases such as 5G radio access networks (RAN), edge computing, network slicing and private networks.

One of the early adopters of Telecom Network Automation is Bell Canada, which has used it to automate its implementation of Google Distributed Cloud Edge, a platform that delivers cloud services at the edge of the network. Bell Canada said that Telecom Network Automation has helped it simplify its network management and enhance its customer experience.

Google Cloud said that Telecom Network Automation is part of its cloud-native network modernization offering for CSPs, which also includes Anthos for Telecom, a platform that enables CSPs to run applications anywhere using containers and microservices. Google Cloud added that it is committed to collaborating with the telecom industry and supporting open standards and interoperability.

Google has been trying to catch up to Amazon Web Services for the cloud services business, and if the new report is to be believed, then the search engine giant has made significant progress.

As per the report from The Information, Google has made progress in the development of data center chips which means that the company could start using its own chips in the year 2025.

It is said that Google’s team of server chip design is currently working on the development of two ARM-based 5nm server chips. One of them, named Maple, is based on the existing design from Marvell Technology and is under trial production from TSMC. The other chip, named Cypress, is designed in-house by a team based in Israel.

Now, it is being reported that the company could start mass production of these chips in the second half of 2024, and the deployment of these new chips in the data centers could start in 2025. Do note that these are speculated timeline and has not been confirmed by the company.

Google has been chasing a bigger rival in the server rental business, Amazon Web Services (AWS), which launched its own custom server chips four years ago. The custom-made chips are optimized to consume less power and deliver higher speeds than the traditional server processors, which also results in significant savings.

Huawei, the Chinese giant which is the world’s leading telecom equipment manufacturer and the second largest smartphone maker, has been actively in the process of becoming self-sufficient and dominate various markets ever since the U.S. government put the company on Entity List last year, effectively banning it.

While Huawei already is one of the very few smartphone chipset markers, the company is now planning to enter the Graphic Processing Unit aka GPU server market which is currently being dominated by NVIDIA.

As per the report coming from Korea, Chinese giant Huawei will be setting up a Cloud and AI Business Group in South Korea in year. It also adds that the business group will later be spun off for further growth.

Huawei Korea has three different divisions: Carriers, Enterprise and Consumer. The new Cloud & AI BG in Korea will be placed under the Enterprise division. The report mentions that the company is currently recruiting experts for this new business organisation, including former and current employees, as well as executives from NVIDIA.

Huawei already has experience in developing chipsets, apart from smartphone processors. In August last year, the company unveiled Ascend 910 touting it to be the world’s most high-quality AI processor which recorded a speed of 256TeraFLOPS — twice the speed of NVidia’s GPU Tesla V100.

After that, the company announced Atlas 900 as the world’s fastest AI training cluster and Huawei claims that it will help make AI more readily available for different fields of scientific research and business innovation.

Atlas 900 combines the power of thousands of Ascend processors and takes only 59.8 seconds to train ResNet-50 for measuring AI training performance. This is 10 seconds faster than the previous world record.

Earlier this year, the Chinese company also launched Kunpeng 920 server CPU aimed at big data calculations and dispersed storage. It is based on the ARMv8 architecture, and formed of the 2.6GHz 64 Core.

This afternoon, Alibaba formally launched the new YunOS 3.0. This operating system’s biggest feature is that it includes CloudCard service where the apps are presented in the screen as a bunch of cards. You would not have to go download the apps that you need.

Also, if you want to watch a movie or eat out, you can click on the cards that say so and you may book reservations at a restaurant or buy movie tickets.

Below are photos of the new OS’ user interface. What do you think?
