Memory chip price surge could trigger smartphone market crisis in 2026

The smartphone market is facing mounting instability in early 2026, driven by a sharp and sustained surge in memory chip prices. According to popular tipster Digital Chat Station, the impact is already rippling across product segments, with mid-range phones on the verge of being pulled from shelves and next-gen flagships entering development limbo.

The strain isn’t limited to increased bill of materials (BOM) costs. It is disrupting brand roadmaps and forcing internal teams to rethink launch schedules. Even Apple has reportedly felt the pressure, as suppliers like Samsung and SK Hynix have raised LPDDR memory prices by up to 100%. Some value-segment devices released in late 2025 may be phased out earlier than planned, while their successors have been pushed to mid-2026 or later. When they do eventually launch, many are expected to carry higher price tags.

Digital Chat Station also says that some internal product teams now view new smartphone launches as high-risk financial liabilities. In response, several brands have already paused development of their next-generation flagship phones. There is growing concern that brands may exit certain regional markets entirely to stem losses.

In a related post from late January, the same source pointed to the mid-range segment, especially the 2,000 to 2,500 yuan tier ($275-$345), as the most vulnerable. The pressure is evident: early Snapdragon 8 Elite phones have quietly dropped launch discounts, the price difference between 512GB and 256GB models has widened to over 400 yuan ($58), and 1TB variants are practically disappearing. Some phones are slashing production volumes just weeks after launch, while others aren’t making it out of prototype stages.

As pricing volatility collides with thinning margins, it’s clear that 2026 might be less about product innovation and more about survival. What used to be a battle of specs could quickly turn into a test of who can stay afloat, and which phone brands are still standing when the dust settles.

Redmi K70 to launch in China later this year with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2: Tipster

Xiaomi is apparently planning on launching the upcoming Redmi K70 with top-notch hardware. The base model of the popular K series will be receiving an upgrade to solidify its status as a ‘vanilla flagship’ device.

The news arrives from known tipster Digital Chat Station, who shared the information on Weibo (a Chinese microblogging website). The tipster claims that the base K70 model will be equipped with the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. Furthermore, this is the same chip that powers the Redmi K60 Pro model. Although, this isn’t exactly surprising since the Redmi K60 also featured a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, which was an improvement over the Dimensity 8100 found in the vanilla K50 model before it.

On the other hand, an earlier report claimed that the K70 Pro model will feature the next-gen flagship chipset from Qualcomm. This processor will likely be the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. Digital Chat Station claims that the Redmi K70 and K70 Pro models will be launching in China sometime around the end of this year. This is probably the case since the K60 lineup had also launched in December last year.

However, this also means that the announcement will be held in December of this year, while the smartphones will go on sale early next year. The Redmi K70 series will likely take on other affordable flagship smartphones from rival brands like iQOO and Realme.

Leakster Digital Chat Station is making a foldable phone

Foldable smartphones are the hot topic in 2023, so much so that almost every brand is trying their hand at them. And it’s not just established brands; even established leaksters are tempted. Digital Chat Station, known for leaking juicy information about smartphones, recently revealed on Weibo that they have a foldable smartphone in the making. While not much information is available, the device appears to have been sent for production.

The foldable may or may not be mass produced

In a recent post on Weibo, Digital Chat Station disclosed that the foldable smartphone they have been working on has now been sent for production. Interestingly, the leakster calls the device a “flagship,” hinting at high-end specifications and possibly a durable hinge. However, these are just assumptions as DCS themselves did not reveal any details. Also, it appears that the device is currently undergoing small-scale production, and the leakster notes that mass production isn’t happening anytime soon.

For those unaware, Digital Chat Station is a popular Chinese technology leakster and blogger on Weibo. They are known for their accurate leaks and predictions about upcoming smartphones and other tech products. The leakster has a large following of over a million people on the Chinese social media platform.

Details about the DCS foldable are quite scarce. It could be a book-style foldable phone like the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Mi Mix Fold 2. Or the leakster may have a flip phone in the works resembling the Oppo Find N2 Flip or Vivo X Flip. We will have to wait for DCS to reveal more information about their foldable device, or perhaps other leaksters will come to the rescue. In any case, stay tuned for updates.

Xiaomi to soon launch new high performance phones with 512GB storage: Tipster

With sizes of pictures, applications, videos, and more, growing over the years, brands had started offering larger storage options for their smartphones. Now, a new report has revealed that Xiaomi plans on launching multiple new handset models that come with high storage options.

In today’s time, when buying a smartphone, one considers the storage offered by the company as a key factor. So, it seems that the Chinese tech giant plans to offer higher storage options from its Redmi sub brands and some of its mid range offerings in the near future. According to known tipster Digital Chat Station, the brand’s smartphones will arrive with 512GB of internal storage.

Notably, this option will be higher than some of its premium offerings at the moment. The known tipster shared this on Weibo (a Chinese microblogging website) and also state that the brand plans to announce more than one high performance smartphone with 512GB storage. He claims that these upcoming models are just around the corner, so we can expect to see teasers or other reports/rumors surface soon.

Interestingly, he stated that at least one of these new devices will feature 8GB of RAM to go along with the high storage option. As of right now, Xiaomi had previously launched the Redmi K50 Pro with 512GB of storage. However, this configuration included 12GB of RAM. So, it might be a part of the next gen K series model or another series entirely. We have no way of knowing at the moment, so stay tuned for more updates regarding this matter.

Xiaomi 12 Ultra could come with a gold-colored middle frame

The Xiaomi 12 series launch from December last year gave a miss to an Ultra model, and some even began claiming that it had been done away with. New leaks thereafter suggested otherwise though, showing that a successor to last year’s ‘superphone’ is indeed in the works. The latest now drops some new design cues of the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, with the highlight being the usage of a gold-colored middle frame.

The information comes from reliable industry insider Digital Chat Station who has also revealed that the middle frame will be paired with a white back cover. Previous leaks had suggested that the rear camera module will be huge, spanning the entire width of the phone. The tipster has now revealed that the module will house a “matrix triple camera” setup and be colored black.

Upfront, there will be a 2K curved display with a single punch hole aligned to the center. The panel can also be expected to have other top-notch specs too such as a 120Hz refresh rate, high touch sampling rate, HDR10+ support, and more.

If the Xiaomi 12 Ultra indeed comes with a triple rear camera setup, then it will be following in the footsteps of the Xiaomi 11 Ultra. A tipster had earlier claimed that the device will feature the same 50MP + 48MP + 48MP cameras from the 11 Ultra, meaning Xiaomi may be employing an already winning formula.

Lastly, the Digital Chat Station under the same post has revealed that the Xiaomi 12 Ultra will not have a unibody design. Its predecessor didn’t either, so that’s yet another similarity between the two.
