Earlier today (9th November 2021), Huawei officially announced during the Operating System Industry Summit 2021 that it will be joining hands with all of its partners in the community to formally donate its open source operating system, openEuler.

At the conference, the Chinese tech giant announced that it will be donating its openEuler operating system to the OpenAtom Foundation. For those unaware, the openEuler program was initially announced back in 2019, with the new openEuler OS being launched back in September 25. While the company’s HarmonyOS was targeted for smart terminals, IoT terminals, and industrial terminals, openEuler was aimed for servers, edge computing, and cloud infrastructure.

According to Wang Tao, Executive Director of Huawei and Director of ICT Infrastructure Business Management, stated that the company will be donating the complete source code of its open source operating system along with the brand’s trademark, community infrastructure, and other related assets to OpenAtom Foundation. As of right now, the openEuler platform’s community has brought in around 10,000 developers across nearly a hundred special interest groups, and even bringing in 300 companies.

Despite donating its open source platform, Deng Taihua, Huawei’s vice president and president of computing product line, said that the company will continue to invest in and promote the development of openEuler in five aspects. This includes, technological innovation, ecological construction, commercial promotion, open source construction, and talent development. In other words, it still aims to grow the platform.

With the world combating the Coronavirus pandemic, various sectors like work and education has had to shift to the digital realms. To aid this transition at certain regions that are more at risk, Samsung Electronics have stepped up to offer 1,000 Galaxy Tabs to help in the Refugee Youth Education program in Kenya.

As per a recent Newsroom official announcement, the South Korean tech giant is seeking to aid refuge youths by helping in providing necessary tools to study. Thus, the company has sent out 1,000 Galaxy Tabs to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, that will deliver the devices to 15 different locations, which includes schools and community centers in Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps in Kenya.

For those unaware, the refugee camps in Kakuma and Dadaab are two of the oldest ones in the world and are occupied by around 380,000 refugees. Out of this large population, around 40 percent or about 160,000 of these individuals living in these camps are school aged children. Despite these camps have schools to aid in education, the schools were closed for nine months due to lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, even after opening back in January of this year, the schools are still struggling to supply necessary necessities for learning, like stationary, textbooks, and other items.

This is where Samsung comes in, donating Galaxy Tabs that will allow refugee students to utilize the devices to participate in the school classes and even une into extensive digital learning materials as well. James Lynch, Representative of UNHCR Korea stated that “The contribution from Samsung is a good practice of how a global company can help the most vulnerable people access to education with its technology. UNHCR Korea looks forward to developing partnership with Samsung Electronics now onwards.”

Samsung becomes the next major company after Oppo, Xiaomi, TikTok, and OnePlus operating in India to contribute funds to fight the coronavirus outbreak in the country. The South Korean conglomerate has pledged ₹20 crores collectively for PM CARES Fund as well as states of Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

The company says that it will be donating ₹15 crores to the PM CARES Fund and ₹5 crores to the state governments of Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to this, Samsung employees across India are also contributing to the nation. The company says it will match the employee contribution and donate the total amount to PM CARES fund in the coming weeks.

Apart from the donation, Samsung has been also continuously helping local administration and community in Noida. So far the company has provided hospitals with thousands of Personal Preventive Equipment (PPE) kits such as surgeon gowns, face masks, gloves, preventive eye wears, hood caps, and shoe covers.

Samsung is even providing hospitals and other facilities with a large number of infra-red thermometers, public address systems, and air purifiers. The firm has also accelerated the deliveries of its digital X-ray and digital ultrasound machines that it provides to government hospitals under the Samsung Smart Healthcare citizenship program.

Additionally, it has been also helping local administration and police of Noida in providing food packed to the local communities on a daily basis.

Huawei has been continuously helping severely affected nations by COVID-19 virus around the world by donating personal protecting equipment (PPE). The latest country to receive aid from the Chinese telecom giant is Canada in the form of masks, goggles, and gloves.

Huawei has quietly donated more than a million masks, 30,000 goggles, and 50,000 pairs of gloves to Canada. The North American country is currently facing a shortage of PPE supplies like other harshly affected countries. This is mostly because a large global supply of PPE is manufactured in China and those factories were closed during the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

According to the source, Huawei has plans to donate six million masks to Canada, however, out of which, only 200,000 units will be N95 masks. As of now, over a million masks have been already received by the country as mentioned earlier. The remaining units are expected to be delivered soon.

Earlier in February, Canada donated 16 tonnes of PPE to China when the coronavirus outbreak was in its peak in the country. Now, as China is slowly recovering, it has started helping other nations in need. A number of Chinese companies like Huawei, Alibaba, Bank of China, Tencent, Trip.com, and others have been donating PPE and funds.

OnePlus becomes the next Chinese smartphone company after Xiaomi and Oppo to pledge a donation to Prime Minister Cares relief fund in India to fight the coronavirus outbreak in the country. The brand donated a total amount of ₹1 crore just like its sister brand Oppo.

Ever since the cases of COVID-19 disease started rising in India, many companies, celebrities, and even common people have come forward to contribute to various relief funds such as PM, CM and others by NGOs.

As for Chinese companies, TikTok has donated the highest-ever known amount of ₹100 crores in the form of medical equipment to India, followed by Xiaomi with its ₹15 crore pledge. As for the BBK group, Vivo has not pledged any amount so far but has announced to donate surgical and N95 masks to doctors and medical workers. However, Oppo donated ₹1 crore last week and now OnePlus too does the same.

Additionally, OnePlus will also be providing medical safety gear to the government of Telangana state to protect thousands of doctors, nurses, and other paramedic staff, who are on the frontline serving the nation.

The aids provided by the above-mentioned Chinese companies are much appreciated as India is one of their important key markets. Almost all the Chinse tech brands have postponed their launches and sales of new devices in India, however, OnePlus with its ‘Never Settle’ attitude has announced to launch the OnePlus 8 series on April 14.

TikTok, the viral video-sharing platform has announced to donate medical equipment worth ₹100 crores to India. The aid will include 200,000 masks and 400,000 hazmat suits to fight the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

India is one of the latest countries to have a high rise in COVID-19 cases. As of writing this, the nation had a total of 2,567 cases with 72 deaths. This although seems to be a smaller number compared to other countries like the USA, it is enough to widespread the virus as India is a packed country with over 1.3 billion population.

But thanks to the measure taken by the government to lock down the country for 21 days has helped to contain the rise of cases that other nations. However, India is in dire need of medical equipment and funds, which thankfully are being donated by citizens as well as various companies.

TikTok is the latest firm to join this contribution as it alleges to be working with Union Ministry of Textile to provide medical equipment to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The social media company recognizing the safety of medical staff working at the front line, have announced to donate 400,000 hazmat suits to the Indian government.

The donation by the company will also include 200,000 masks to the local / state level medical workers of Delhi and Maharashtra governments. Additionally, TikTok is willing to further extend its support if there is a need in the future.

Now, once again, Manu Kumar Jain, the Managing Director of the Indian arm of the Chinese smartphone makers pledges a total amount of INR 15 crore for a couple of relief funds and NGOs to help the people in need.

India is the biggest market for Xiaomi outside its home country China and the company has been leading the smartphone market in this country for over two years now. Being a popular brand in the region, the firm has been donating to NGOs on a regular basis. Even now, when the COVID-19 virus outbreak begun in India, Xiaomi was the first smartphone brand to donate masks and hazmat suits.

Followed by that, the company now pledges a sum of INR 15 crore to fight the coronavirus in India. Out of the total amount, INR 10 crore will be donated to PM relief fund as well as CM relief funds of various states of the country.  Further, the company has partnered with an NGO called GiveIndia to raise INR 1 crore to make hygiene kits consisting of soaps, sanitizers, and masks available for 20,000 families.

Whereas, the remaining amount will be covered by donations made earlier and by 1000+ Xiaomi employees and partners who are requested to make donations to PM and CM relief funds. Also, Mr. Jain urges Mi Fans to donate for this good cause either on Mi.com or directly to the respective relief funds.

Oppo has been one of the popular smartphone brands in India since its debut in the country in early 2014. The company even has two R&D centers in the country, out of which the Hyderabad center, which is the brand’s largest such center outside mainland China has filed over 50 patents in a year. Now, as the country is facing the coronavirus outbreak, Oppo has come forward to donate a total amount of INR 1 crore to two separate government funds. Apart from this, the company also announced a new ‘Online Repair Service’ to help its customers with basic troubleshooting and software-related issues as part of its after-sales service amidst lockdown. The brand has also extended warranties of its products till May 31.

Lastly, Oppo India also postponed the launch of its Enco M31 wireless neckband earphones in the country and asked the people to stay home to maintain social distancing.

Vivo initially planned to launch its V19 smartphone in India on March 26 but the launch was later shifted to April 3. Now, the company officially announces in a statement that is delaying the launch of V19 and other new products in the country indefinitely amid the current COVID-19 situation. As per the statement given by Vivo, the company will be now focusing its time and resources towards coronavirus relief efforts in India. Additionally, the company also urges the people of India to stay indoors and follow social distancing as much as they can.

Vivo is not the only smartphone company to offer help in India due to coronavirus outbreak. Only yesterday, Xiaomi India announced its donation of lakhs of masks to state governments and hospitals across the country. Also, the company mentioned it will shut down its premises as per the orders issued by state / UT governments. On the other hand, Samsung, Oppo, LG, and even Vivo have also temporarily shut down their production sites in the country.

Huawei Technologies has pledged to donate 500,000 masks to medical institutions in Japan. As per a report by Kyodo News, the firm has already contributed the first batch of 200,000 masks to two university hospitals in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. Further, the remaining masks have been planned to be donated to other regions in the country. In other news, the company has also announced to send medical equipment to Ireland, the second European country to receive medial supplies fro them company after Italy.

The telecom giant Huawei is not the only Chinese firm to donate medical supplies to foreign countries. Previously, Lenovo, Alibaba, Xiaomi, Oppo, and others have contributed so far for the greater good. Wang Jianfeng, chairman of Huawei Japan said that he hopes to help the Japanese people get through difficult times. It is worth noting that even Japan helped China when the coronavirus outbreak began two months back.

Apart from Japan, Huawei has sent relief aids to Italy and has now even announced to donate ‘personal protective equipment’ and ‘technological equipment’ to Ireland in a statement. David Kenny, the deputy chief executive of Huawei Ireland said that COVID-19 knows no border or nationality and everyone is in this together. He further said that Huawei is operating its business in Ireland for 15 years and thus it will do everything it can do to help as it is doing in other European countries. He added that the company’s donations will help the people working on the frontline as well as in the ICT department for video conferencing.

With that being said, the precise number of units and shipping methods are yet to be determined, however, Mr. Kenny assures that his company has teams in both China and Dublin working to bring the equipment as quickly as possible.
