The 2023 Japan Mobility Show has seen the display of an array of mobility solutions. The Honda e-MTB concept electric bike is one of the models that were showcased at the event. Honda says the e-MTB concept is a vehicle with a new riding experience that combines the fun of a motorcycle and a mountain bike. This allows the e-MTB to easily navigate uphill with electric assist.

Features

The Honda e-MTB concept e-bike frame and swingarm utilize thin-walled aluminum cast technology. The tech is similar to what is being used in high-performance motorcycles. The bike has a unique frame that combines functionality with impressive styling. The Honda e-MTB is equipped with Shimano brakes, DT Swiss XM 1700 wheels, and Maxxis Minion DHR II tires.

The Honda e-MTB concept e-bike is equipped with the new SRAM Eagle drivetrain, a Fox Float X suspension system, and Maxxis tires for balance. The thin aluminum frame means that the electric mountain bike concept is lightweight. Honda however did not specify the weight of the concept. The model is likely powered by the SRAM Eagle drivetrain. The e-MTB’s battery is likely to be stored in the downtube. The rear Fox Float X shock absorber is combined with a front suspension fork.

The 2023 Japan Mobility Show has seen the announcement of several concept electric mobility solutions from Honda. There are no official indications yet whether the Honda e-MTB will transit into a production model. If indeed it becomes a production model, the pricing and global availability details are also lacking at this time.

The Nukeproof Megawatt Carbon electric mountain bike (eMTB) has been unveiled as the first bike to feature the SRAM Eagle Powertrain. The Eagle Powertrain system is SRAM’s innovative powertrain that also controls gear activity for the bike. The Nukeproof Megawatt Carbon is an aggressive enduro bike that also comes with an improved suspension.

The Megawatt Carbon eMTB will be powered by a 250W (peak output is 680W) motor. The bike is designed to deliver pure, unadulterated fun, according to the company. The electric bike is a high-spec, full-suspension eMTB with 29-inch and 27.5-inch front and rear wheels respectively. It features the refined RockShox suspension and a 12-speed drivetrain. The cockpit has a minimalist design and the bike supports wireless shifting on SRAM X0 and GX AXS hardware.

The Megawatt Carbon’s 720Wh battery is removable and can be recharged outside the bike. The bike features Rally and Range ride modes and you can customize the pedal assist to suit your needs. The Coast Shift and Autoshift features are also exciting aspects of the Megawatt Carbon due to its Eagle Powertrain. The Nukeproof Megawatt Carbon offers more torque than what is obtained from the Shimano gear used previously.

The Nukeproof Megawatt Carbon eMTB is available in two trims – the Pro and RS versions. The Nukeproof Megawatt Carbon Pro is priced at $9,899 while the Megawatt Carbon RS is retailed for $10,899. The bike is available in small, medium, and large sizes, as well as XL and XXL sizes. Only the medium and large sizes of the Megawatt Carbon are available currently.

UPDATE: We want to clear that the engineer made this self-driving bike as a side project of his own that can be operated even when it is unmanned. We had previously stated that this prototype was a project from Huawei but have corrected the discrepancy.

An engineer from Huawei has developed an autonomous bicycle prototype. The prototype electric bicycle is quite impressive, with it being capable of maintaining its balance even on the slimmest of surfaces (demonstrated with the bike standing on a thin fence). Furthermore, the self-driving bike also arrives with a series of impressive features like the high precision sensors on its body, paired with image recognition cameras, and AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology as well, which enables it to run without the need for human interaction.

The engineer at the helm of this project is Zhihui Jun, who apparently got this idea after he faced an injury due to a bicycle accident. This injury leads him to realize that there is potential for a self-driving bike. Thus, the company’s team put together equipment such as an automatic control system along with a perception sensor network, and a chip that acts as the brain of the system and providers the required computing power.

The engineer first began modeling the bicycle on CAD, and then added two large brushless motors and steering gear on the physical prototype. After this, Zhihui Jun equipped the bike with an RGBD depth camera, an accelerometer, gyroscope, and even a LiDAR sensor. The bike is powered by a lithium-based battery that can last for up to 2 to 3 hours, while the main control module is housed right below the seat.

The engineer outfitted the bicycle with a control module that works similarly to the systems used in artificial satellites to maintain its balance. In other words, it is equipped with small but high precision sensors that can detect even the slightest of tilts and immediately sends data to the control module so that it can make changes that ensure that it can stand on its own. The motor also helps run the rear wheel, which enables it to move without pedaling.

There has been a rise in electric bikes as an alternative transportation mode across the world. The rising demand for e-bikes in the European market has led Indian company Hero Cycles to deliver its first batch of made-in-India e-bike dubbed Hero Lectro to Germany as it targets the EU market.

The delivery of the first made-in-India electric bikes to Europe is a milestone for Hero. It is pursuing its investment and expansion plans to get up to half a billion Euros from its Europe adventures by 2025. Chinese manufacturers and local European companies are dominating the European fast-growing two-wheeler electric vehicle (EV) turf. But Indian companies could be seeking a piece of the European pie as competitors to Chinese manufacturers. India has seen a rapid increase in the number of startups producing e-bikes, while some established manufacturers like Hero are shifting attention to this area.

India is fast rising in the development of small electric vehicles and systems. As a result, it can indeed leverage its development strides that had seen the country dominate the global motorcycle and tricycle market with some heavy-hitting companies. In addition, the policy climate in India is encouraging the blossoming and production of electric vehicles as a solution to the transportation challenges.

The coronavirus pandemic could be viewed as a proximate factor that contributed to the growth of the two-wheeler EV industry, as demand for such products grew during the pandemic. Many persons preferred to avoid crowded vehicles and sought the individuality of commuting within their cities using e-bikes. Their affordability and compact nature also endeared the e-bikes to many across the world.

To advance its European aspirations, Hero Cycles will pursue its quest to become a new leader in the European market, thus squaring up with leading Chinese manufacturers. The absence of a stringent tariff regime for Indian bikes could give Hero Cycles a competitive edge over its Chinese counterparts. Hero also hopes to leverage its massive manufacturing capacity and resources as the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer.

Hero Cycles will hope to scale up its manufacturing capacity and exports to Europe over the next few years for it to get close to the leading Chinese manufacturers. Innovation will undoubtedly drive this pursuit, and Hero is already focused on that aspect. Hero recently partnered with Gogoro to deploy Gogoro’s innovative battery swapping system and infrastructure that could expand the range and versatility of Hero’s e-bikes.

Xiaomi, while known for its smartphone business, has also established its presence in the lifestyle products markets. The company has launched more than 44 products this year that are not part of its smartphone lineup.

Now, today, the company has unveiled yet another product — Mi HIMO Electric Bicycle T1, which is now being crowdfunded by the company in China. At the moment, the bicycle is priced at 2,999 Yuan (~$447) and will start shipping from 4th June.

The company says that the Xiaomi HIMO Electric Bicycle T1 is based on a patented design and the parts are carefully selected based on the fire-resistant materials and paint. As for the meter, it comes with a high-sensitive digital display that adopts based on the light.

As for the headlight, the company says that it is derived from the HIMO English Logo element and offers up to 18,000cd brightness. The company says that the distance between far and near lights is 15 meters for the high beam and 5 meters for the low beam.

It is powered by a 350W brushless permanent magnet motor which is claimed to offer high-end performance. Further, there are 90mm wide tire and 8mm thick high-elastic rubber as well as the front and back dual brake system. While the front has hydraulic disc brake, the rear wheel adopts safe and durable drum brake system.

The bike comes with a one-touch start button as well as a multi-function combination switch and a touch button to control the bicycle while driving. As for the battery life, it comes with a 14,000mAh battery which is claimed to offer a travel range of 120 kilometers on a single charge.
