A recent leak hints at a notable price hike, raising questions about whether the phone’s upgrades are enough to justify the cost.

A bigger price tag, familiar hardware

According to a listing from Italian retailer Epto, the Galaxy A17 5G is expected to launch in Europe starting at €299.90 for the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage model. That’s nearly €71 more than the base model of last year’s Galaxy A16 5G, which launched at €229. The official retail price is reportedly €319.90, though it’s possible Samsung will offer launch discounts. Even the 4G version of the A17 is listed at €289.90 for the same storage and RAM—an unusual pricing move for a non-5G model.

To be fair, Samsung is offering more storage out of the box—256GB compared to 128GB on the A16 5G. The A17 5G is also said to include a more premium build with Gorilla Glass Victus and a main camera with OIS, which should help deliver sharper photos and steadier videos.

Samsung’s next affordable smartphone, the Galaxy A17, has just surfaced in new leaked renders, giving us a solid first look at its design. This is an upcoming budget Galaxy phone with a plain yet sleek look. So let’s check it out.

Samsung Galaxy A17: A Minimalist Budget Phone?

The official looking renders were shared in the latest AndroidHeadlines report. Samsung’s new Galaxy A17 will likely be positioned as the brand’s most affordable smartphone that targets the budget segment. Despite being positioned in the budget segment, the A17 features a sleek and minimalist aesthetic with flat edges, a subtle camera layout, and a modern build that echoes Samsung’s more expensive models.

Meanwhile, the front appears to sport a water drop styled notch for the selfie camera and visible bezels on all four sides (especially the chin). Based on what we know so far, Samsung is working on two versions of the Galaxy A17, which include a 4G and 5G variant. Back in May 2025, the Galaxy A17 4G surfaced on the GeekBench platform carrying the MediaTek Helio G99 SoC, 4GB of RAM, and Android 15.

A previous sighting of the Galaxy A17 5G listed it with the Exynos 1330 SoC and 8GB of RAM, however, the latest report claims that Samsung is bumping the processor to a more powerful Exynos 1380 chipset. It adds that the rear will features a 50MP triple camera setup (5MP ultra wide + 2MP macro), while the front sports a 6.7-inch AMOLED display. A sizeable 5,000mAh battery pack is expected to power this budget phone, with support for 25W wired fast charging. Samsung will likely announce this model for under 200 US Dollars, so stick around for more, as we can expect official teasers to surface soon.

Samsung is getting ready to launch the Galaxy A17 5G later this year. The main upgrade is optical image stabilization (OIS) on the rear camera, a first for the A1x series. Samsung plans to use a spring-based OIS system that costs 20% less than regular OIS setups, making it affordable for an entry-level phone. The company is hoping this feature will help the A17 stand out from other budget phones.

While the camera gets an upgrade, the chipset stays the same. The Galaxy A17 5G has shown up on Geekbench with the Exynos 1330, the same chip used in the Galaxy A14 5G and A16 5G. It’s a 5nm chip with two Cortex-A78 cores at 2.4GHz, six Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0GHz, and a Mali-G68 MP2 GPU. This means performance will likely be similar to the last two models.

The phone supports LPDDR4X and LPDDR5 RAM. The tested unit had 6GB RAM, but other versions may offer 4GB or 8GB, like the A16 5G. It also supports both UFS 2.2 and UFS 3.1 storage. The chip can run displays at 1080p+ with up to 120Hz refresh rate, but previous A1x models have only offered up to 90Hz, and that might not change. The software is Android 15 with One UI 7.

In short, the Galaxy A17 5G brings a better camera to Samsung’s budget range, but keeps the same performance.
