Taiwanese mobile phone manufacturer HTC has continued to experience a downward spiral in its market share in the past two years and that has resulted in a reduction in the number of models the tech company churns out each month. However, the month of June 2020 seems to be a good one for the company as it recorded a substantial growth in its revenue occasioned by the Desire 20 Pro released mid-June.

HTC’s revenue jumped by 63.5% last month as it reached NT$649 million. This is said to be NT$250 million more than its revenue in May. This happens to be the company’s highest revenue recorded this year.

The Desire 20 Pro responsible for the surge in revenue was launched on June 16. The phone is a 4G phone equipped with a 6.5-inch punch-hole display. It is powered by a  Snapdragon 665 processor paired with 6GB of RAM and there is 128GB of storage onboard. The phone also packs a quad-camera setup with a 48-megapixel main. It is priced at NT$ 8990 and is available in HTC’s home market.

HTC’s revenue is also expected to remain strong in the next few months as the new U20 5G is billed to go on pre-sale from July 1-31st and on sale in August. The phone which is the brand’s first 5G phone features a 6.8-inch punch-hole display with a quad-camera setup and rear-fingerprint sensor. It is powered by a Snapdragon 765G SoC with 8GB RAM and 256GB ROM. There is equally a huge 5000mAh  and support for 18W fast charging. It is priced at 18990 NTD (about 4539).

HTC launches two new smartphones in its home country Taiwan – Desire 20 Pro and U20 5G. The former handset has leaked multiple times over the past few weeks. Whereas, the latter is the first 5G mobile phone from the company.

HTC Desire 20 Pro Specifications

The Desire 20 Pro is just like any other budget smartphone in the market powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM. The storage can be further expanded via microSD card.

The phone sports a 6.5-inch FHD+ (1080 x 2340 pixels) LCD panel with 19:5:9 aspect ratio and a punch-hole for the 25MP selfie camera. The back of the handset houses a quad-camera setup consisting of a 48MP primary sensor, 8MP ultra-wide unit, 2MP macro shooter, and a 2MP depth sensor.

Other features of the device include WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, dual-frequency GPS, 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C, multifunctional NFC, rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, and Android 10.

Lastly, the handset gets is power from a 5,000 mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 3.0 fast-charging standard.

HTC U20 5G Specifications

The HTC U20 5G is the company’s first 5G smartphone. It features similar design and identical specs like the Desire 20 Pro except for some minor changes like the processor and display size to name a few.

Under the hood, it comes powered by the well-known mid-range 5G SoC, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G. Unlike the other phone, it features 8GB RAM and 256GB ROM and still can be expanded via microSD card.

The FHD+ (1080 x 2400 pixels) 20:9 LCD panel on it is slightly larger at 6.8-inch and has a punch-hole for the 32MP selfie snapper. Whereas, the rear camera setup is exactly the same as the other phone. That means it has got a 48MP (primary) + 8MP (ultra-wide) + 2MP (macro) + 2MP (depth) quad-camera setup.

Further, the handset runs Android 10 and features a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, 3.5mm headphone jack, USB Type-C, WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, dual-frequency GPS, and multifunctional NFC.

Last but not least, it has the same 5,000 mAh battery but supports slightly faster Quick Charge 4.0 fast-charging protocol.

HTC Desire 20 Pro/U20 5G Pricing and Availability

The Desire 20 Pro and U20 5G smartphones are limited to Taiwan for now. Though they have been listed on the official website, HTC is yet to reveal their price. The company might bring them to other markets in the near future.

Taiwanese phone maker HTC used to deliver good quality smartphones in the past but the company has long fallen off the pecking order. HTC is no longer a force to reckon with, as Chinese firms like Xiaomi, Realme, Vivo have pushed it off the cliff. The company is still making some attempt at grabbing a piece of the pie and will launch a new Desire 20 Pro smartphone on June 16.

Noted tipster Evan Blass has now shared the first hands-on images of the phone. The images show both the front and rear aspects and align well with the schematics which leaked back in April. the device packs a quad-camera setup at the rear as well as a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The rear panel has a glossy finish which looks like it is made from glass.

The front aspect shows a display panel slightly curved on all sides. The device also utilises a punch-hole design located at the top left corner.

The Desire 20 Pro is a mid-range smartphone which is expected to feature a 6.5-inch LCD with FHD+ resolution. GeekBench listing reveals the presence of Qualcomm chipset which is likely the Snapdragon 660 or 665 chipset paired with 6GB RAM. The phone will also run Android 10 OS out of the box, the first HTC model to do so.

HTC is no longer a big name in the smartphone market. Still, a design sketch of Desire 20 Pro emerged at the end of April courtesy of Evan Blass aka @evleaks. Now, its specifications leak as well through Google Play Console.

Going by the design, the HTC Desire 20 Pro certainly looks like any other mid-range smartphone in 2020, however, its internal specs are outdated.

As per the Google Play Console listing, the handset’s codename, as well as model number, are htc_bymdugl and HTC 2Q9J10000 respectively. But if we recall, Mr Blass claimed the codename to be Bayamo.

Further, the listing reveals the phone to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC paired with 6GB RAM, which is a bummer since the chip is over a year old and is mostly found in budget smartphones.

Whereas, the display of the phone will be fairly modern as it will be an FHD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) panel with a punch-hole at the top left corner. Lastly, like any other new Android smartphone, it will run Android 10 out of the box.

Unfortunately, the listing lacks camera specs along with the official renders of the device. Also, it is not sure when HTC will announce this handset but hopefully, the brand prices it aggressively.

Gone are the glorious old days of HTC releasing Android smartphones with unique industrial design. The company has shifted its focus to VR industry years ago leaving behind the phone business. Last year, we only go to see a handful of devices and one of them was not even developed by the company. That said, the brand may soon release a new handset called Desire 20 Pro whose design sketch has been leaked recently.

The HTC Desire 20 Pro design sketch leak comes from Evan Blass who is popularly known by his alias @evleaks on Twitter. He posted this leak on his Patreon as he no longer posts leaks on the social media platform.

The design sketch of HTC Desire 20 Pro reveals the phone to feature a display with a punch hole at the top left corner. The sketch also showcases the handset with zero bezels, which we think is just for illustration as the final product will most likely have noticeable bezels all around.

The right side of the device will come with a textured power key and volume rockers above it. Whereas, the phone’s rear will house a quad-camera setup paired with an LED flash and a circular traditional capacitive fingerprint sensor at the top centre. The back of the device will also feature HTC branding at the dead centre.

Mr Blass also confirms the codename of the handset to be Bayamo but unfortunately, he did not say anything about the specs. However, according to a recent Geekbench listing, the device is somewhat confirmed to come with Qualcomm Snapdragon 660, 6GB RAM, and Android 10.

Based on the alleged specs and design leak, the HTC Desire 20 Pro will be a phone with a modern design but with specs from 2018.
