According to details shared by Chinese tipster Hyperdimensional Realm, the Huawei Mate XT 2 could launch in October this year. The device is also said to debut alongside the upcoming Mate 90 series in China. If the launch timeline turns out to be accurate, Huawei would be following a similar release schedule to its earlier tri-fold foldable models.

The leak claims that the Mate XT 2 may feature the Kirin 9050 Pro chipset. The processor is expected to place a strong focus on on-device AI capabilities. Reports surrounding the chip have appeared multiple times in recent weeks, although Huawei has not revealed anything officially about it so far.

The upcoming tri-fold phone is tipped to pack a battery larger than 6,000mAh, which would be a noticeable jump over the 5,600mAh battery seen on the previous-generation model. The leak also suggests that the phone’s camera performance may match the capabilities of the Mate X7 series.

Another major area of improvement could be the hinge mechanism and crease management. The tipster claims Huawei has made significant advancements in hinge technology, which may help reduce the visible crease on the folding display. A previous leak revealed that the device would be available in three shades, such as Mystic Black, Auspicious Red, Crimson Purple, and Bright White.

According to tipster Fixed Focus Digital, the company’s next-generation triple-folding phone, expected to launch as the Mate XT 2, is reportedly set to be unveiled on September 10. That’s almost exactly a year after the first Mate XT tri-fold made its debut.

Mate XT 2 might launch at the same time as iPhone 17

If the date is accurate, the launch would coincide with Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 event, which is rumored to take place on September 9 or 10. 

The timing also feels deliberate enough. Huawei and Apple have been circling each other for years, especially in China, and a back-to-back reveal would be another high-profile face-off.

In the past few weeks, multiple leaks have pointed to an early-to-mid September reveal for Huawei’s next foldable flagship. It was previously rumored to launch on September 12, but Fixed Focus Digital now claims the company is targeting the 10th. It also happens to be the date Huawei used last year for the Mate XT Ultimate Design edition.

Huawei hasn’t officially confirmed anything about the Mate XT 2 yet, and we still don’t know what changes it will bring over the first-gen model. 

The original Mate XT was notable for its tri-fold design — opening up to a tablet-sized display — and it gained plenty of attention in China, even managing to steal some of the spotlight from the iPhone 16’s local debut. 

Now, with its successor rumored to drop right alongside the iPhone 17 lineup, Huawei might be setting up for a repeat performance. It is expected to come in Mystic Black, Auspicious Red, Crimson Purple, and Bright White shades.

According to known tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the Chinese tech giant is planning on releasing the Mate XT 2 in multiple color options. To recall, the original Huawei Mate XT was announced in two color variants, namely Ruihong (Red) and Dark Black. But the next gen model may debut in four variants, which includes Mystic Black, Auspicious Red, Crimson Purple, and Bright White.

Huawei’s first tri-fold phone carried an exorbitant price tag but was still received well in China, with a global release following a while later. Just recently, the Mate XT 2 was certified with support for both 5G networking and satellite communication, carrying the GRL-AL20 model number. It is also expected to get the more durable UFG glass for its tall foldable screen. Based on what we know so far, this model could be equipped with the Kirin 9020 SoC that also powers the Huawei Pura 80 lineup.

Thanks to its unique form factor, the main screen is taller than your typical notebook style folding phones and may reach 10.2 inches in size when completely unfolded. Keep in mind that this is still just an unconfirmed report, so take this news with a pinch of salt for now.

In the post, the tipster claims that the Huawei Mate XT 2 could be getting the same advanced UFG (ultra-flexible glass) technology, which is used on the Samsung W25. To recall, the W25 is a premium variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 that is exclusive to the Chinese market.

Simply put, this is a better protective display cover than the UTG (ultra-thin glass) covers that are found in most other foldable smartphones. For those unaware, the South Korean tech giant gets its UFG panels from the known glass specialist, Schott. So the latest rumor also hints that the German company is getting a new competitor from China (Via Notebookcheck).

There have been some reports that Huawei’s next triple foldable could be called the Huawei Mate XTs. Debunking these rumors, the tipster claims that the second-generation device will be called the Huawei Mate XT 2 Extraordinary Master. In the global market, this device is likely to be dubbed the Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design.

As can be seen in the Weibo post, the tipster claims that the Huawei Mate XT 2 (triple foldable) and Mate X7 (book-style foldable) will debut in the second half of this year. He added that these devices will arrive with new chipsets, cameras, and batteries. Next year, Huawei will launch foldable tablets.

Huawei Mate XT 2 specifications (rumored)

According to reports, the Huawei Mate XT 2 will continue to feature a 10.2-inch triple foldable screen like the previous generation. It is likely to feature Huawei’s in-house developed “Tian Gong” hinge mechanism, offering a slimmer yet durable construction.

Under the hood, the Mate XT 2 may feature the Kirin 9020hh chipset, which uses a 1+3+4 CPU setup consisting of a 2.5GHz prime Taishan core, three 2.15GHz middle cores, and four smaller 1.6GHz cores. For graphics, it is equipped with the Maleoon 920 GPU that works at 840MHz.

Huawei might also introduce eSIM functionality with the Mate XT 2, eliminating the need for a physical SIM card. This move could help reclaim internal space, an important advantage for foldables aiming for sleeker profiles.
