Huawei has released a new, cheaper version of the MateBook 13 laptop with the device coming with just one feature separating it from the previous model. The MateBook 13 was first launched in 2020 but this model misses out on the touch functionality on the display. This brings down the price of the laptop to 5,199 yuan ($824).

The laptop retains all other features found on the original MateBook 13 released in 2020. This includes a dazzling 2K full-screen design in a compact 13-inch body with a narrow frame design. The laptop utilizes a unique 3:2 aspect ratio and up to 88% screen-to-body ratio. The display also comes with a 100% sRGB wide color gamut, and double eye protection function.

The screen of the previous touch screen version supports ten-point touch, supports one-finger swipe to browse web pages, and a two-finger stretch action to enlarge pictures. This version which is 300 yuan cheaper is suitable for those who don’t need these touch features.

The MateBook 13 also uses a thin and light metal body, carved with greasy sandblasting technology, and has a high-quality texture. The laptop is just 14.9 mm thin and weighs just 1.3 kg.

The MateBook 13 features an Intel Core i5 chipset paired with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. The laptop comes with an Intel Iris Xe Graphics card bringing about a 160% increase in the graphics performance compared to the previous generation.

In terms of heat dissipation, the MateBook 13 is equipped with a new dual-fan and dual heat pipe “wing” arrangement. The design improves the heat dissipation efficiency and makes the cooling more balanced.

The new Huawei MateBook 13 will go on sale in China on March 4.

Ahead of the launch, Huawei Mall has listed the company’s two new upcoming laptops — MateBook 13 2020 and MateBook 14 2020. Both these devices can be pre-booked with a deposit of 100 yuan and 200 yuan.

Coming to the features, both the devices, MateBook 13 2020 and MateBook 14 2020 comes equipped with 2K resolution touchscreen display with the only difference being the screen size for both the devices.

Under the hood, the devices come powered by Intel‘s 10th generation Core processors, offering the latest in terms of chipsets. As for the camera, the MateBook 13 comes with the usual camera sensor on the bezel while the MateBook 14 has it hidden under a key. Yesterday, we reported about the leaked specifications of both the devices.

MateBook 13 2020

The MateBook 13 has a 13-inch 2160 x 1440 (2K) IPS display with a 3:2 aspect ratio and an 88% screen-to-body ratio. The spec sheet says the screen has bezels that measure just 4.4mm.

It will be available in two CPU variants – a Core i5-10210U model and a Core i7-10510U model. Both variants will have NVIDIA’s MX250 GPU. It will also come in 8GB and 16GB RAM variants with 512GB PCIe SSD.

The MateBook 13 will have a fingerprint scanner that doubles as the power button. It will also have 2 x USB Type-C ports and an audio jack. The spec sheet also mentions Shark-Fin dual cooling fans and 65W superfast charging. The notebook has a 41.7Wh battery, is 14.9 millimeters thick and weighs 1.32 kilograms.

MateBook 14 2020

The MateBook 14 will also have a 2160 x 1440 2K display with a 3:2 aspect ratio but a 90% screen-to-body ratio. It has the same CPU variants as the 13-inch model and will also be available in 8GB RAM and 16G RAM configurations with 512GB of PCIe SSD storage.

It also has a one-touch fingerprint scanner but its cooling fan is just one but bigger. For connectivity, Huawei has included 1 x USB 3.0 port, 1 x USB 2.0 port, 1 x HDMI port, 1 x “full function” USB Type-C port, and 1 x audio port. It is powered by a 56Wh battery and also supports 65W superfast charge over USB-C. It is 15.9mm thick and weighs 1.53kg.

Pricing Details

As for the pricing, the device is offered in two variants. The MateBook 13 2020 that packs Core i5 SoC, 16GB RAM and 512GB storage costs 5,999 yuan while the one with Core i7 SoC, 16GB RAM, and 512GB storage is priced at 6,999 yuan.

Huawei MateBook 14 2020, on the other hand, starts at 5,899 yuan for the Core i5, 8GB RAM, and 512GB internal storage while the one that packs Core i5, 16GB RAM, and 512GB storage costs 6,399 yuan. The top-end model which packs Core i7 SoC, 16GB RAM and 512GB storage costs 7,399 yuan.

Apart from the smartphone business, one of Huawei‘s stronghold is its laptop business. Huawei manufactures some of the best laptops worldwide, in terms of design and even the configuration (hardware and software). Until now, Huawei laptops run Microsoft Windows but the recent US trade ban is threatening to shut down the laptop business. Well. that isn’t going to happen as Huawei has started selling its latest Matebook models running Deepin Linux.

Deepin is a Chinese software brand with a beautiful and polished desktop Linux distribution. The laptop models were spotted on Huawei’s official store in China – VMall. The models listed include the Huawei Matebook X Pro, Matebook 13 and Matebook 14. On the interface, the Windows logo is ditched and replaced with a key that simply reads “Start.” The prices also vary slightly from those of the Windows version with all three models priced at 300 yuan (about $42 USD) less than the Windows 10-running models.

While we cannot say for sure why the company released these versions, it may not be unconnected to the US/China trade war in which Huawei is caught in the middle. When the trade ban goes into effect, Huawei won’t be able to install Microsoft Windows on its laptops. but with this new option, the company may just have found an easy alternative.

The Chinese tech giant had also hinted that it would launch laptops running its self-developed HarmonyOS in the future. But for now, Deepin Linux comes to the rescue and we believe the company must have worked on the software to ensure that the desktop and other aspects like battery are optimised.

Last year, Huawei had announced the first generation of MateBook X Pro laptop at the Mobile World Congress and this year, the company has introduced the second-generation of MateBook X Pro at MWC 2019 in Barcelona, Spain.

Along with the MateBook X Pro, the China-based company has introduced a new MateBook 14 and MateBook 13. All the three laptops announced at the event are running Microsoft‘s Windows 10 Home operating system.

The MateBook X Pro is similar to its predecessor in terms of design and the company says that it keeps all the good things of the previous model. It comes with a CNC machined metallic unibody with a premium sandblasted finish.

It features a 13.9-inch LTPS Ultra FullView touch screen with 3.2 aspect ratio and 3K (3000 x 2000 pixels) screen resolution. Under the hood, it packs up to 8th-generation Intel Core i7-8565U and Nvidia GeForce MX250 GPU.

For cooling, the device houses an intelligent system that switches between active and passive modes for silent cooling performance, while the two Huawei “Shark Fin Fans 2.0” feature larger fins to produce a higher air output.

The MateBook X Pro also packs four speakers (two tweeters + two woofers) with Dolby Atmos sound. As for the ports, it comes with two USB Type-C ports, one USB Type-A port, and new Thunderbolt 3 port. It supports Wi-Fi 6 and has a fingerprint power button. There’s also a 57.4 Wh (7565mAh) battery onboard that supports 13 hours of video playback or 14 hours of office work.

The Huawei MateBook 14, as the name suggests, comes with a 14-inch FullView display with 3:2 aspect ratio and 2160 x 1440 pixels screen resolution. It is powered by an 8th generation Intel Core i5 or i7 processor (8265U or 8565U respectively), an optional NVIDIA GeForce MX250 discrete GPU, up to 16GB RAM, and up to 512GB of onboard storage.

The Wi-Fi speeds can reach a maximum of 1733Mbps and the device supports Bluetooth 5.0. It has a 57.4Wh battery which offers up to 10.5 hours of web browsing, 14 hours of office work, or 15 hours of video playback, according to Huawei’s lab testing.

It also has a metal body and a full-size keyboard and Huawei’s “Shark Fin Design 2.0” for 18% cooling efficiency. There are dual speakers with Dolby Atmos support, one USB-C port, two USB-A ports (2.0 and 3.0), a 3.5mm headphone jack, and an HDMI port. The web camera is recessed in a key for privacy and there’s also a fingerprint power button.

On the other hand, the Huawei MateBook 13 has a 13-inch 3:2 FullView display with 2160 x 1440 pixels resolution, with the option to opt for a 10-point multitouch display. Under the hood, it packs up to 8th generation Intel Core i7 processor paired with up to Nvidia GeForce MX150 GPU.

It comes with 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB SSD. Other features of the laptop include two USB Type-C ports, fingerprint power button, 3.5mm audio jack, two speakers with Dolby Atmos, and a 41.8 Wh (3,670mAh) battery. It also comes with Huawei Share 3.0 software helps users transfer data between PCs and Android smartphones.

The Huawei MateBook X Pro is priced at €1,599 for the Core i5 + 8GB RAM model and €1,999 for Core i7 + 16GB RAM model. On the other hand, the MateBook 13 starts at €999 and goes up to €1,399 and the MateBook 14 will cost €1,199 for the Core i5 model and goes up to €1,499.

All three laptops will be offered in Mystic Silver and Space Gray colors while MateBook 14 will also be available in Pink Gold color. MateBook X Pro and MateBook 14 goes on sale in April while the MateBook 13 will be available later this month.

Apart from its telecommunication equipment, Huawei is better known globally for its smartphones coming out with increasing innovative features. The Chinese company also has its tentacles spread towards the manufacture of laptops, tablets and other gadgets. At the ongoing CES 2019, the company has unveiled two of its gadgets for the US market. Huawei technically cannot sell its phones in the US so, we are not referring to its latest cool flagship phones but the MateBook 13 laptop as well as the MediaPad M5 Lite tablet.

Both the MateBook 13 laptop and MediaPad M5 Lite tablet were launched no too long ago in China and now the company is making them available in the US. Let’s take a brief look at the features of both gadgets.

Huawei MediaPad M5 Lite

The MediaPad M5 Lite comes with a similar design as the MediaPad M5 but the model is a trimmed down version just as the name suggests. The tablet features an aluminium unibody and a 10.1-inch display but this time around, the orientation of the Huawei logo is changed to a landscape direction while the physical home button is also positioned in the same direction. The display adopts a 16:9 aspect ratio and has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution. Do note that the M5 Lie resolution is slightly lower than that of the MediaPad M5. The M5 Lite also comes with a less powerful Hisilicon Kirin 659 SoC and is available in two memory variants. There is a 3GB RAM+32GB storage model as well as a 4GB RAM+64GB storage variant. The MediaPad M5 Lite also comes with four speakers crafted by Harman Kardon and they work in sync with Huawei’s Histen 5.0 sound system to deliver 3D surround sound. It is equally bundled with an M-Pen Lite stylus which offers 2,048-levels of pressure compared to the regular M5’s 4,096-levels. The stylus is only available in some region and looks like the US is inclusive.

Furthermore, the tablet packs a mammoth 7500mAh battery which should provide enough juice to power long multimedia and gaming sessions. Providing the interface is the Android 8.0 Oreo-based EMUI 8.0 OS. The tablet also comes with a dedicated “Kids Corner” interface as well as some novel behaviour-focused controls such as the ability to detect when the tablet is too close to a face, the ambient light is below a certain threshold or if the tablet’s being used from an “unhealthy” angle, such as overhead. In such circumstances, it will then pop up a little warning animation in the corner, which expands to the entire screen if not heeded.

The tablet is available in Champagne Gold and Space Grey colours. The MediaPaad M5 Lite is expected to become available at the end of January and would retail for just $299 in the US. This is a pretty good bargain at that price.

Huawei MateBook 13

Talking about the MateBook 13 laptop, it adopts Huawei’s family-style full-screen design, with narrow bezels around it. The left and right-side bezels are just 4.4 mm while the laptop has a screen ratio of 88%. As the name implies, it packs a 13-inch IPS glossy screen with a resolution of 2160×1440 pixels (3:2). The display has a 178-degree wide-angle view, 1000:1 contrast, typical brightness of 300nits and minimum of 240nit, but the screen does not support touch control. The laptop has a thin 14.9mm metal body and weighs just 1.28kg. The body is manufactured using diamond cutting technology, supplemented by delicate sandblasting technology with well-chamfered edges. 

The Matebook 13 is powered by the latest eighth-generation Intel Core i7-8568U (Whiskey Lake) processor with the lower model utilising an Intel Core i5-8265 chipset. The laptop is also equipped with an NVIDIA MX 150 discrete graphics, 2GB GDDR5 independent graphics memory, thermal design power consumption 25W, with LPDDR3 memory.

On the internals, it has a shark fin fan 2.0 smart cooling system, dual fan separation heat source, seven sensors real-time temperature control. The battery capacity is 41.838Whr (3670mAh/11.4V), the theoretical battery life is about 10 hours, and it can be used for 2.5 hours after charging for 15 minutes. The interface has only two USB-Cs with data transfer and charging on the left side, data transfer and DisplayPort output on the right side, and a 3.5mm headset. Other aspects, it packs a full-size island chocolate keyboard, power button which also doubles as a fingerprint sensor, dual-band 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0, 1MP camera, dual speaker, dual microphone, Dolby Atmos sound.

The MateBook 13 will be available at the end of January starting at $1,000 with integrated graphics and $1,300 for the model with discrete. Because of the discrete graphics option, the MateBook 13 isn’t fanless like the X models, which makes it thicker, and it scales back to two speakers from four. It will come in Space Gray for a Core i7 or silver for a Core i5 with prices starting at just under $1,000.

During the Nova 4 launch event, Huawei also officially launched a budget smartphone which goes by the moniker Enjoy 9. Details of the Huawei Enjoy 9 had first been spotted on VMall sometime last week but the pricing wasn’t disclosed. The device has now been shown to be a thousand yuan machine as its pricing starts at 999 yuan (~$145) for the base variant.

Specs wise, the Enjoy 9 features a 6.26-inch 720x1520pixel IPS LCD display. The device has a waterdrop notch design which houses the selfie camera. The device packs a Snapdragon 450 chipset onboard instead of Huawei’s custom Kirin chipset. However, the chipset is a low-end chipset that won’t offer so much in terms of firepower. The processor is paired with a 3GB of RAM and 4GB of RAM on some models. The device also comes with 32GB of internal storage while the 4GB RAM variant has a 64GB storage onboard.

On the camera end, the Enjoy 9 sports a 13MP f/1.8 + 2MP f/2.4 depth-sensing dual camera setup at the rear while for selfies, there is an 8MP f/2.0 selfie camera. The device comes with Face scanner using the front camera but there is no physical fingerprint button at the rear. One outstanding feature onboard the Huawei Enjoy 9 is the 4,000mAh battery that will definitely deliver an extended usage period. On the software aspect, the device runs Android 8.1 Oreo-based EMUI 8.2. In addition, the device comes with three slots, two SIM slots and a third one for microSD card. The Enjoy 9 comes in Black, and three gradient Aurora colors – Blue, Red and Purple.

Huawei’s notebook model is presently categorised into four series – Matebook X Pro, X, D, and E. In early November, Huawei announced the new full-screen, ultra-slim and lightweight MateBook 13 (WRT-W29E) which is a new series entirely. More details of the Matebook 13 was also revealed today during the Nova 4 launch.

Huawei is scheduled to announce the all-new Nova 4 smartphone today at an event in China. Well, as per sources it is believed that Huawei is also going to release a couple of other devices such as Huawei Enjoy 9 and Matebook 13. Both these devices have already been announced, but they will be showcased once more along with the new Huawei Nova 4. Already, Nova 4 has appeared on Geekbench and AnTuTu benchmark apps featuring its specs and some other details.

As per the recent leak, Nova 4 will carry Kirin 970 with 8 GB of RAM. It will feature the same camera sensors as like of the Huawei Mate 20. There are two different models of Nova 4 featuring different rear camera modules. One model will come with a 48 megapixels+ 16 megapixels + 20 megapixels while another one will carry 20+16+2 megapixels triple camera set. Although, it is a full proof high-end package which will compete against devices such as OnePlus 6T, Galaxy S9, and others.

Moreover, Huawei Matebook 13 will also release along with the new smartphone. It is an ultra-thin, portable notebook with a huge display. In terms of power, it hosts Intel 8th generation CPU and discrete graphics performance promising good performance.

The last but not the least, Huawei Enjoy 9 will also appear at the launch event. It is an entry-level device featuring Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC. It will come in two different variants of 3/4GB RAM and 32/64 GB internal storage.
