Huawei MatePad Paper Receives Update with Enhanced E-Reader and Note-Taking Capabilities

Huawei has recently launched a new update for its MatePad Paper Ink Tablet, which includes an exciting e-reader app that has been developed in partnership with Palm Reading. This new app promises to provide users with the best e-book reading experience possible on the MatePad Paper tablet.

Apart from the e-reader app, the update also enhances the tablet’s note-taking feature significantly. This includes split-screen note-taking ability, making it easier for users to make changes to their notes by simply double-clicking the eraser to switch the stylus. Additionally, users can make handwritten annotations right on the PDF, and the update also introduces the ability to copy and paste across notes for enhanced convenience.

The update also introduces a new AI feature that categorizes folders and the e-book library, making it easier for users to find the e-books they want. Moreover, the e-note automatically switches between horizontal and vertical orientation depending on the way the e-note is being held and operated.

Furthermore, the e-reader app can now open e-books of up to 2 GB in size, and the search feature has been optimized to make searching for e-books more accurate and easier. Users can also jump to a particular page, and Huawei has ensured the overall stability of notes gets a boost with this update. The note sync status also gets shown, so users know how much has been synced and how much is still left. Moreover, users can customize the icons as well.

Although the update currently only applies to the MatePad Paper E Ink Tablet sold in mainland China, users worldwide can expect a wider rollout soon.

Huawei MatePad Paper e-ink tablet gets a white-coloured variant

Huawei first announced the MatePad Paper at the Mobile World Congress 2022. The e-ink tablet was later launched in China and has since gone on sale. The MatePad Paper was only available in a black-coloured variant. That has now changed as the Chinese tech giant has launched a white-coloured version of the MatePad Paper.

Compared with the black model, the white model provides a silky velvet-like warmth and mellow feeling, which is softer and brighter. The new model is now on pre-sale on Jingdong (JD.com) with a discounted price of 2899 yuan (~$455).

As a reminder, the Huawei MatePad Paper is equipped with a 10.3-inch grayscale screen with a resolution of 1872 x 1404 pixels and an aspect ratio of 227 PPI. The tablet comes with low blue light, no flicker, wide viewing angle, and sunlight-readable paper-like characteristics, which can provide a more comfortable reading experience. It is also the world’s first TÜV Rheinland paper-like paper. Shows certified ink flats.

The product provides functions such as split-screen notes, handwriting-to-text, and voice-to-text, and effectively improves the complex and slow input of text on ink screens, and the difficulty of page switching.

At the same time, Huawei MatePad Paper is equipped with the second-generation M-Pencil stylus which supports 4096 pressure sensitivity, and smooth follow-up. The optimal delay is only 26ms, and the writing is very smooth.

As an e-book reader, the device packs trimmed down bezels on the top, bottom, and right edges while the left edge is slightly wider to give the outlook of a book that is opened. As a result of the reduced bezels, the device features a screen-to-body ratio of 86.3%.

In terms of the processor, the MatePad Paper is powered by a Hexa-core processor paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The slate comes with WiFi 6+ and Bluetooth 5.2 support.

Keeping the lights on is a 3625mAh battery that is touted to deliver up to 28 days of battery life on standby. It also comes with 22.5W fast charging which Huawei claims can deliver up to 6 days of reading with just a 1.5-hour charge. It supports reverse charging. The device also features fingerprint recognition as the power button doubles as the sensor.

In Europe, the tablet is available for €499 while in China, it starts at 2999 yuan ($472) for the 4GB+64GB WiFi-only variant.

Huawei last month launched the MatePad Paper as one of its products showcased at the Mobile World Congress 2022. The tablet was tipped to hit China later in March. True to speculations, the Huawei MatePad Paper has now been officially revealed to launch in China on March 16. The product will emerge during the Huawei Whole House Smart and Full Scene New Product Spring Launch Conference billed to hold on that day.

The Huawei MatePad Paper is a tablet/ e-book reader with a 10.3-inch grayscale display screen. The display has a resolution of 1872 x 1404 pixels and an aspect ratio of 227 PPI. The e-ink display comes with added features such as an anti-glare and reflective screen that aids low-light use and 32 levels of backlighting.

In terms of the processor, the MatePad Paper is powered by a Hexa-core processor paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The device is compatible with the M-Pencil (second generation) that Huawei launched for its high-end tablets. Thus, you can take notes, annotate, edit books and other documents. The screen is well responsive to the stylus as Huawei tweaked the sensitivity of the textured screen. The M-Pencil features 4096 Levels of Pressure Sensitivity and low latency of 26ms.

The e-ink tablet boots HarmonyOS 2 bringing features such as the ability to easily establish a connection between the tablet and Huawei’s laptops, PCs, tablets, and phones. The connection takes the form of a USB drive but wirelessly, thanks to WiFi 6+ and Bluetooth 5.2 support onboard. Thus, you can easily share notes and PDFs between gadgets.

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022 was held last week in Barcelona after a two-year hiatus as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic. Although a number of Chinese OEMs like Xiaomi, Vivo, were conspicuously missing, the star of the show was a surprise Chinese company – Huawei.

Despite the U.S sanctions that have almost crippled Huawei’s smartphone business, the company mounted a solid show with the unveiling of several tablets and notebook PC. Perhaps, the most outstanding, going by ratings from the media is the Huawei MatePad Paper e-Ink tablet. This is a one-of-a-kind product that doubles as both an e-book reader and a tablet.

The MatePad Paper is ranked as one of the “Best of Mobile World Congress 2022” alongside several Huawei products including the MateBook X Pro, the all-in-one MateStation X, the 2-in-1 notebook MateBook E, the printer PixLab X1, and the portable speaker Sound Joy.
