Huawei has announced that its routers will be receiving the HarmonyOS 3.0 upgrade, which aims to optimize four key performance areas. This upgrade will be available for the Huawei Router Q6 series, Huawei Router AX6, and Huawei Router AX3 Pro and will require cooperation with HarmonyOS 2.0 and above mobile phones to experience it.

One of the major new features of the upgrade is the introduction of a children’s online care service card. This allows parents to check their children’s online status in real-time on their mobile phone desktop and disconnect them from the internet with just one click. This feature is currently in the public beta stage and requires Huawei mobile phones/tablets running HarmonyOS 2.0 and above.

Another new feature is the support for one-click import of floor plans and network coverage visualization. The visual intelligent diagnosis function has also been upgraded, eliminating the need for manual editing of network coverage heat maps. These maps can now be generated automatically based on the house type and support 1 million+ real estate and 12 million+ house type data, covering 160+ cities.

The upgrade also includes triple algorithm optimization, which improves memory management and CPU scheduling for multi-device internet access scenarios. Additionally, a new self-healing algorithm has been added, which is claimed to improve network stability by 50%. Lastly, the upgrade improves the signal tracking and positioning algorithm, which can accurately guide Huawei smart home devices to connect to routers with better distance and signal. This includes Huawei HarmonyOS Connect devices such as smart door locks, cameras, and smart sockets.

In summary, the HarmonyOS 3.0 upgrade for Huawei routers brings a number of new features and improvements, including a children’s online care service card, one-click import of floor plans, visual intelligent diagnosis function, triple algorithm optimization, and improved signal tracking and positioning for smart home devices.

The announcement was made by Zhi Hao, the President of Huawei’s Consumer business IoT product line.

According to the senior executive, the tech giant had achieved the 12 million unit shipment in 2019, with products priced over 200 Yuan (roughly 28 US Dollars) having the most dominant share. Notably, online sales accounted for this and 2019 as the sales up by 139 percent over 2019. This includes the company’s routers with the latest Wi-Fi 6 standards.

For those unaware, Wi-Fi 6 is the latest generation in the standards. One of the biggest improvements it has made is the introduction of 5G technology. In other words, it has two high and two low bandwidths (high bandwidth, high concurrency, low latency, low power consumption). This also translates to an overall faster networking speed support, with better and wider coverage over the previous generations.

Editor’s Pick: Honor unveils 7nm Kirin 820 5G chipset; brings big improvements over the Kirin 810

As of right now, Huawei is one of the leading figures in Wi-Fi 6 routers and other AIoT products. 2019 saw the breakout of the technology while 2020 is already witnessing a more widespread commercial adoption. This means that 2020 may surpass even 2019 with its overall router sales figures, although thee recent coronavirus outbreak might have certain negative impacts on sales as well.

Huawei also used the press conference as a stage to talk about its new Wi-Fi 6+ technology. The new routers are based on a self developed custom chipset. It will also soon be found in Huawei smartphones, tablets, smart displays, and other terminals and routers as well. The new chipset is dubbed that Kirin W650 and takes advantage of the company’s end to end dynamic narrow bandwidth technology.

According to the Omdia report, Huawei has maintained its dominance in the router market since 2018. This marks the second year in a row that the company achieved the top spot. Similarly, in the backbone router market, Huawei has maintained the top position for three consecutive years as well. Furthermore, 2019 also marked the first time Huawei routers took to top seat in the metro router market, making Huawei the No 1 in the global carrier market in the world.

For those unaware, Huawei is a pioneering figure in the telecommunications industry. It is a leader in 5G networking and its supplementing equipment and technologies, and the continued investments in the field have been the key factor leading to this achievement. Currently, the company is also working with various governments from across the globe that is adopting the newer faster bandwidth.

Omdia’s report specifically brings up the customer centric approach Huawei has in the market. Other notable phrases used to describe the company’s success included its innovative products, next generation protocols and solutions and more. The dominance in the router field has also been accredited to various growths in the 5G networking and cloud computing fields.

The NetEngine 8000 series from Huawei is the only router in the industry that supports the E2E 400GE standards. In other words, the company has launched cutting edge routers that have yet to see a viable rival competing against it. This series of routers are capable of handling ten fold increases in traffic while also maintaining affordable per bit costs for large scale businesses.

Simply put, Huawei has been a class leader in this field providing very competitive and viable products to other businesses as well. The company originally started developing routers back in 1995, and the 25 years’ worth of investment in R&D is clearly paying off now. As of right now, Huawei routers are spread across 130 different nations, providing intelligent IP networks and other solutions to various markets.

Furthermore, the company has also launched a new lineup of routing products to boost the networking capabilities of its wireless routers. This includes the Huawei A2 Wi-Fi Router that is the first in the world to feature one-touch NFC support on a network router.

According to Huawei, the inclusion of the NFC has greatly reduced the hassles that were commonly associated with network routers such as the need to scan codes to gain access. With the new A2 router, you just have to simply unlock your phone and enable NFC. Touching the top of the router will connect the device to the network without the need of any authentication or password.

Under the hood, the Huawei A2 Wi-Fi router is powered with a 1.4GHz CPU, with 3 Lingyi Wi-Fi chips (1×2.4GHz + 2x5GHz) and 6 independent signal amplifiers. It also includes 4 high-performance cores that boost signal transmission over medium to long ranges.

Before the company officially launches its first 5G smartphone, it is all set to launch a 5G router.

Huawei has today teased a 5G Wi-Fi router launch by shared a poster on Weibo. The text on the poster reads — “5+6=3.X? is the taste of new products! January 24, 2019, for you!”, confirming that it will be launching a new product on 24th January in China.

The poster doesn’t clearly state that the 5G Wi-Fi router will be launched. But looking closely at the “5+6=3.X” text in the poster, we can see that it says 5G, clearly hinting at the 5G technology. The ‘6’ could be representing Wi-Fi 6 which is the abbreviation for the Wi-Fi 802.11 ax.

The Wi-Fi 802.11 ax standard promises higher data transfer rate and larger capacity along with higher energy efficiency. Further, it’s being reported that the Wi-Fi 6 can reach the speed of up to 11Gbit/s. It is expected to be widely used in smart home devices or IoT-based devices.

This year will witness the 5G technology go mainstream and Huawei wants to be the one leading the game. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Huawei’s chairman Hu Houkun (aka Ken Hu) announced that the company has deployed 5G networks in 10 countries and will soon deploy in 20 more countries.

Huawei’s chairman Hu Houkun has also confirmed that the company will be launching its 5G smartphone in June this year. Apart from Huawei, Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, and Oppo among others are all set to launch their 5G smartphones later this year.

Like Xiaomi, Huawei also has a number of accessories in addition to its smartphone lineup. This year, the company unveiled a brand new Honor Router just after it announced the Mediapad X2 tablet at MWC. Now, the same router is available for sale on a Chinese e-commerce website for just 188 Yuan ($30).

The Honor router comes with a dual-band design (2.4G / 5G) and a dual-core Kirin processor clocked at 1GHz. The processor is based on Cortex A7 cores. The router also has its own Wi-Fi acceleration engine. The company has made sure that the Honor router is compact as it measures just 90 × 90 × 90mm.

The router comes in white color and is well designed and built to last. The company specifically focuses on its anti-brute security and Wi-fi isolation features which makes the Honor router one of the most secure routers in its price range. However, you won’t have to sacrifice on the speed, thanks to its dual-band support.

The company is directly targeting to compete with the Xiaomi router that was announced last year. Xiaomi recently said that it sold over 1 million Mi routers already, so it will be interesting to see if Huawei’s Honor routers manages to reach anywhere close to this figure.

So what do you think about the new Honor router? Is it good enough to compete with Xiaomi’s Mi router?
