The iPhone 18 is still months away, but surprise, surprise, we may already have our first look at iPhone 20.

A newly released render video claiming to show the so-called “iPhone 20” suggests the line could introduce one of the biggest design changes in iPhone history.

The video was published by the YouTube channel fpt., which claims the device is already in the early stages of production. While Apple has not confirmed anything, the render combines many rumors that have been circulating for months, from supply chain reports and analysts such as Mark Gurman.

iPhone 20 is almost bezel-less

The renders in the video show iPhone 20 as an almost bezel-free device with glass flowing across all four edges. The backplate is all-glass, the front has under-display Face ID, and the sides have no physical buttons at all. 

One thing that may confuse is the name itself. If Apple is releasing the iPhone 18 this year, it’s expected that the 2027 model will be called the iPhone 19. But according to the rumors, Apple could skip directly to iPhone 20 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone.

Apple did something similar before. In 2017, the company celebrated the iPhone’s tenth anniversary by skipping the iPhone 9 and launching the iPhone X instead. It introduced major changes such as Face ID and a nearly edge-to-edge display, setting the direction for future iPhones.

The rumored iPhone 20 could be following the same strategy.

Three major design changes in iPhone 20

The video claims the iPhone 20 series will introduce three major design changes:

• The first is the introduction of a quad-curved screen. Apple is reportedly working with Samsung on a custom OLED panel that curves slightly on all four sides. 
• The second major change could be the removal of the Dynamic Island. According to the leaks, both the front camera and the Face ID system may sit completely under the display. 
• The third change involves the removal of physical buttons. Instead of traditional power and volume keys, Apple may use solid-state touch controls with vibration feedback. 

The redesign may also come with major hardware upgrades.

The phone is expected to use Apple’s new 2nm A21 chip. And the iPhone 20 could also include a 200-megapixel main sensor with improved HDR technology. Apple is also claimed to be using silicon-carbon battery technology in the iPhone 20. 

According to reports, Apple is currently working with both Samsung and LG to solve technical issues related to the quad-curved display. One major problem is brightness reduction around the curved edges of the screen.

Under-display Face ID is another challenge for the brand. Apple will need to make sure the sensor works while maintaining fast unlocking speeds and good selfie camera quality.

A recent leak from tipster Setsuna Digital (via Weibo) offers an early glimpse at what could be a major shift in how Apple’s devices are controlled.

According to the post, Apple is preparing to move beyond the familiar click-mechanical buttons and into a new era of solid-state controls with haptic feedback, not just for iPhones, but also for its other devices.

Solid-state buttons with ultrasonic feedback

According to the source, by the time the iPhone 20 debuts in 2027, Apple intends to mass-produce solid-state buttons for the power key, volume controls, operational buttons and camera control buttons. Rather than moving parts, these buttons would rely on pressure sensing and “local vibration” feedback to give a button-like feel.

Prior to that, the leak says the camera control button will be simplified on the 2026-era “iPhone 18”, dropping its capacitive layer and retaining only a pressure-sensing mechanism. Following that, Apple plans to adopt piezoelectric ceramic components to provide the haptic sensation in later models.

The broader initiative is expected to replace mechanical keys across Apple’s entire ecosystem, including future iPad and Apple Watch models. Internally linked to the long-rumoured “Project Bongo”, the effort reportedly focuses on eliminating accidental inputs while ensuring a consistent and reliable tactile experience for users at scale.

As these kinds of interface changes tend to require significant validation, the leak suggests this transition is still in the research and refinement phase. The promise is durability (fewer moving parts to break) and new gesture possibilities (firm press, long hold, swipe) but the challenge is getting the tactile feedback and responsiveness right before rollout. Until then, mechanical buttons will likely remain in place while Apple works behind the scenes.

Apple could be planning one of its biggest marketing shake-ups in years as the iPhone nears its 20th anniversary in 2027. According to new industry chatter, the company might skip “iPhone 19” entirely and jump straight to the iPhone 20, marking two decades since the first iPhone changed the tech world back in 2007.

The rumor comes from Omdia analyst Heo Moo-yeol, who believes Apple’s 2027 flagship will bring more than just a name change. If true, this would be the biggest visual overhaul since the iPhone X — when Apple famously skipped “9” to launch the Roman numeral “10,” introducing Face ID and the edge-to-edge design that still defines modern iPhones.

Leaked details point to a bezel-free front, possibly achieved with under-display sensors and cameras. In fact, the company has been exploring Under-Display Camera tech for quite a while. If pulled off, it would finally enable a truly full-screen design, much like the just-released Nubia Z80 Ultra.

Before then, Apple’s roadmap could take an unusual turn. Alongside the book-style foldable, which is said to be delayed to 2027, the development of a clamshell model also seems to be in progress.

By 2027, Apple may split its launches across the year — with a base “iPhone 20” and a budget “iPhone 18e” in the spring, followed by the Pro, Air, and Fold models in the fall.

“Apple will release the iPhone 18e and iPhone 20 in the first half of 2027, and the iPhone 20 Air, Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone Fold 2 in the second half.” noted Heo Moo-yeol.

Skipping numbers isn’t new for Apple — it’s a way to signal something big. If the leaks hold up, the iPhone 20 won’t just celebrate 20 years of iPhone history; it could mark the start of a completely new chapter in Apple’s design story.
