Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6

The Huawei MatePad Pro 12.6 is the leader of the pack. It sports a 12.6-inch 2560 x 1600 OLED display with 5.6mm slim bezels that give it a 90% screen-to-body ratio. The screen has a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, DCI-P3 color gamut, and a Delta E color accuracy rating of less than 0.5. This is also the first tablet in the world to receive a TÜV Rheinland Full Care Display 2.0 certification.

Huawei has squeezed the camera into one of the side bezels, so you can have your video calls in the landscape position. This design change means that the punch hole of the 2019 model is gone.

Powering the MatePad Pro is the Kirin 9000 series. The Wi-Fi version of the tablet comes with the Kirin 9000E, a variant of the Kirin 9000 with fewer GPU cores and NPU cores. The 5G version of the tablet has a Kirin 9000 chipset. Both versions have 8GB of RAM and users will be able to pick up the Wi-Fi version in 128GB and 256GB storage variants while the 5G version is only available with 256GB of storage. There is support for storage expansion via Huawei’s proprietary NM card slot.

The MatePad Pro 12.6 has an 8MP front-facing camera, a 13MP main rear camera with an f/1.8 aperture, an 8MP f/2.4 ultrawide angle camera, and a 3D depth-sensing camera. There is also an LED flash on the back.

Huawei has packed a total of eight speakers tuned by Harman Kardon and with Histen 7.0 sound effects into the new flagship tablet. There are also four microphones that are designed to pick up your voice from several meters away and also cancel background noise when having a video call or recording.

The MatePad Pro packs a 10050mAh battery that will provide up to 14 hours of playback. It supports 40W fast wired charging, 27W wireless fast charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging. Huawei ships the tablet with a 40W SuperCharge power adapter. Other features are Bluetooth 5.2, dual-band Wi-Fi, USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 port, and OTG reverse wired charging.

Harmony OS

HarmonyOS brings new features such as a bottom dock similar to that of iPadOS that shows frequently used apps and also recently used ones. Another feature is New Service Widgets which display information in real-time and allows users to access certain features without launching the app. Two other features are a new Tablet-PC Multi-Screen Collaboration:

App Multiplier – users will be able to scroll up and down on the empty spaces on either side to navigate app content without releasing their grip on the tablet. They can also launch two instances of the same app and interact with each window separately. Huawei says there are almost 4000 apps that have been adopted for App Multiplier.

Tablet-PC Multi-Screen Collaboration – the new MatePad can double as an extended second screen for your computer. Owners can also use it as a digital pad or use it to sign and annotate documents when in mirror mode. While collaborate mode allows users to easily transfer content between the PC and tablet and vice versa with a simple drag and drop. Of course, these features work with Huawei’s own PCs.

MatePad Pro 12.6 Price and Availability

The MatePad Pro is already available for pre-order starting today and it will go on sale on June 10. The tablet will be available in three colors – Silver Frost, Matte Gray, and Olive Green which has a textured vegan leather back. Below are the prices:

8+256GB Wi-Fi = ¥5499 (~$862)

8+256GB Wi+Fi (Keyboard case and M-Pencil 2 included) = ¥6699 (~$1050)

8+256GB 5G (Keyboard case and M-Pencil 2 included) = ¥7999 (~$1254)

In Europe, the tablet will be available for €799 but we don’t know what the storage capacity is for this version.

MatePad Pro 10 10.8

if the 12.6-inch MatePad Pro is too big, then there is a 10.8-inch model. However, the screen size is not the only difference between them. This version has an LCD screen with the same 2560 x 1600 resolution, 4.9mm thin bezels, DCI-P3 color gamut, a 120hz refresh rate, and a hole punch at the top left corner.

To this end, we expect a whittled-down launch itinerary this year. The company recently launched the Mate X2 flagship and is expected to launch the P50 series in May.

A rumor has emerged in the Chinese media that Huawei’s chip-making arm HiSilicon will soon launch the Kirin 9000L mobile platform. This is the first time we are hearing about this chip but putting the name into consideration, it can be understood that the Kirin 9000L has a similar design to the Kirin 9000E and Kirin 9000 but the manufacturing process is different. The unannounced Kirin 9000L is said to be manufactured using Samsung’s 5nm EUV process. The chipset is slightly inferior to the two TSMC models manufactured earlier on, considering its setup.

The leak source also revealed the configuration of the Kirin 9000L, highlighting the difference it has with the Kirin 9000 and 9000E. The Kirin 9000L’s large CPU core will see its frequency reduced to 2.86GHz as against 3.13GHz for both the Kirin 9000 and 9000E. The GPU is an 18-core Mali-G78 while the 9000 and 9000E GPU cores are 24 cores and 22 cores respectively.

Furthermore, recall that Huawei’s flagship chipsets usually feature a dedicated NPU. In this regard, the Kirin 9000L’s NPU will use a single large core CPU only. In contrast, the Kirin 9000 features two large cores and a micro core while the Kirin 9000E has one large core and a micro core.

We can’t vouch for the authenticity of these details but on the surface, this could be Huawei’s attempt at rationing its chip inventories as the company had stacked up large orders before the US ban became absolute, affecting companies outside the US using US technology like Samsung foundries, TSMC, and others. One of the sources disclosed that the new chip may be utilized by the Huawei P50 alongside the Kirin 9000E.

Also, an earlier rumor had emerged that Samsung had collaborated with Japanese and European manufacturers to build a small production line using non-US equipment. This new chip using Samsung 5nm EUV may be the result but there is no official word on that yet.

If indeed Huawei has got a Kirin 9000L chipset in the works, we may see it get announced in no distant time. We’ll keep you update on this story if more details emerge.

It can be said based on recent reports that the Chinese brand will announce the Nova 8 and Nova 8 Pro phones through the upcoming unveil event. While the Huawei Nova 8 SE debuted last month as a budget-friendly 5G phone from the brand, the forthcoming Nova 8 could be an upper mid-range phone and the Nova 8 Pro could be a flagship device.

The poster released by the brand has a silhouette of Nova 8’s back panel. It shows that the handset is equipped with an oval-shaped camera housing. This reminds us of a leaked schematic from last month that revealed that the Nova 8’s oval-shaped camera module could be housing four or five cameras.

The front design of the Nova 8 and Nova 8 Pro is yet to be officially confirmed by the brand. There are speculations that the Nova 8 could be featuring a flat-screen with a dual punch-hole design, whereas the Nova 8 Pro’s dual punch-hole display may have curved edges. Both phones are also rumored to support high refresh rates.

Ideally, the Nova 8 Pro should be powered by a Kirin flagship such as the Kirin 9000 or Kirin 9000E. It is already known that Huawei is unable to use Kirin chipsets due to the ongoing US ban. Hence, it is unclear whether the Nova 8 and Nova 8 Pro will be equipped with Kirin or Dimensity chipset.

A recent leak had revealed that the Dec. 23 launch event will see the arrival of two other devices such as the Huawei Enjoy 20 SE and Huawei Watch Fit. The latter will be a dedicated launch for China since it has already gone official in global markets. Rumors have it that the Nova 8 may begin at 3,000 Yuan (~$459), and its Pro sibling could carry a starting price of 4,000 Yuan (~$612).

The Kirin 9000 Series is a 5G chip design with the capability to handle intensive computations and multi-tasking operations with ease. The chip is the most sophisticated 5nm 5G SoC available, delivering vastly improved performance and power efficiency over its predecessor. It takes over from the Kirin 990 5G built on a 7nm silicon.

The new processor is said to have more than 15.3 billion transistors, the first processor to break the 15 billion transistors mark. This makes it the densest and most full-featured 5G SoC to date. The powerful processor packs a three-level power efficiency architecture with cores running at clock frequencies of up to 3.13GHz. The CPU part has eight cores, including a 3.13GHz Cortex-A77 large core, three Cortex-A77 medium cores each clocked at 2.54GHz. The SoC also has four Cortex-A55 small cores clocked at 2.04GHz each. The base frequency of the chipset is slightly higher than that of the Snapdragon 865 Plus which is clocked at 3.1GHz. Thus, Kirin 9000 is currently the highest frequency mobile phone processor.

Also integrated into the SoC is a 24-core Mali-G78 GPU, as well as an innovative NPU featuring two big cores and one tiny core, taking on-device AI to a new level. The 24-core Mali-G78 GPU is touted to be the most powerful GPU ever seen on a Huawei device. This delivers advanced graphics performance and is complemented by an amazing audiovisual experience for immersive gaming. The architecture exceeds the Kirin 990’s Mali-G76 in that the number of cores is increased by half and the performance is upgraded by 60% over the Mali-G76.

In terms of 5G, the industry’s first four-network synergy technology can efficiently integrate Wi-Fi 2.4GHz, Wi-Fi 5Ghz, main card 5G, and secondary card 4G, bringing aggregated high network speed, stable low time under changing network conditions, network optimization or concurrent download.

On its part, the Kirin 9000E GPU cores drop to 22. In terms of CPU architecture, both Kirin 9000 and Kirin 9000E adopt 8-core designs, which are a 3.13GHz Cortex-A77 super core, three 2.54GHz Cortex-A77 large cores, and four 2.05GHz Cortex-A55 energy efficiency cores.

In terms of GPU, Kirin 9000E is a 22-core Mali-G78. In terms of NPU, Kirin 9000E has dual cores (large core and one small core). In other respects, the two chipsets seem to be the same, including the integration of Balong 5000 5G baseband, ISP 6.0, security module, etc. In addition, they are all manufactured with 5nm EUV process, support LPDDR5/4X memory and UFS flash memory, support HiFi sound quality, 4K HDR video, etc.

At the recently held Huawei Developers Conference (HDC) in China, the Consumer Business Group head for Huawei, Richard Yu confirmed that the Mate 40 series will be debuting soon. Also, the UK wing of the company has confirmed through a tweet that the next generation Huawei Mate will break cover soon. As reliable tipster Evan Blass had revealed earlier, the Mate 40 series may release in the international markets in the coming year.

Apple recently unveiled the Apple A14 Bionic as the world’s first 5nm chipset. The publication revealed that Huawei will be the first brand to launch a 5nm chipset with a built-in 5G modem. The 5nm Kirin 9000 with 5G support is expected to power the Huawei Mate 40 Pro and Mate 40 Pro+.

Apple’s 5nm A14 SoC requires an external modem for LTE connectivity. As far as the Mate 40 is concerned, it is likely to feature the Kirin 9000E which is said to be an enhanced version of the Kirin 990 5G chipset. The report also states that the Mate 40 series will offer faster charging capabilities than the predecessor series.

While the Mate 40 series will come with beefed up cameras, it will not feature Google Mobile Services due to the U.S. sanctions. Earlier this month, it was reported that Huawei has reduced component orders for the Mate 40 series by 30 percent as its likely expected a dip in interest and shipments.

Up until now, we have thought there will be just one processor but a new leak says that there will be two versions of the Kirin 9000.

As revealed in a tweet by the leaker Teme (@RODENT950), the Kirin 9000 series will include two processors – the Kirin 9000 and the Kirin 9000E.

The Kirin 9000E appears to be the less-powerful version of the series as seen in the tweet above while the Kirin 9000 is the high-end version. However, since he isn’t sure, we will advise you to take it with a pinch of salt until more details surface.

Last year, Huawei announced two flagship chipsets too – the Kirin 990 and the more powerful Kirin 990 5G. While the main difference between the two chipsets was the addition of a built-in 5G modem in the latter, the Kirin 990 5G also offered better performance thanks to its higher-clocked CPU cores.

It has been reported that the Mate 40 series may be the last set of flagship phones to be powered by a Kirin processor. There is no news yet as to when Huawei will unveil the new processors but with the Mate 40 series expected to launch in October, Huawei should unveil the new processor in the coming weeks.
