The LG Wing is a unique smartphone that was released in 2020, known for its distinctive design featuring a swiveling display. It was first released in South Korea, and was the first device in LG’s newly announced Explorer Project series. It is also the last smartphone that LG produced, making this update a significant milestone for the Wing phone. The device boasts a 6.8-inch P-OLED primary screen that can rotate 90 degrees, revealing a smaller 3.9-inch secondary screen underneath. The LG Wing is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset and comes with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It also features a triple-camera setup, including a 64-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide gimbal motion camera. Unfortunately, the phone went out of production shortly after launch. Maybe the design was ahead of its time, or the company ran into production issues. Nonetheless, it was sad to see the device leave the market so soon. However, LG has announced that it will push Android 13 to the LG Wing in what seems like one last update.

IT Home reported that the Korean market has already started receiving the update, and North American and European markets are expected to follow suit in the coming months. After the update, the firmware version of the LG Wing will be upgraded to F100N40a, and the March 2023 Android security update will be integrated.

The patch package is around 1.4GB, and the update includes several new features, such as display device control shortcut icons on the lock screen, previewing, sharing and editing copied text and images, simplified multi-window functionality, and fine-grained control of notification permissions for each application. Additionally, users will now be able to check and stop the currently active application in the status notification window, and enjoy improved music and video controls.

Keeping the promise, the company has now revealed a list of smartphones that will be getting the new Android 12 update in the South Korean market.

LG has revealed that the Q92 5G, V50 ThinQ, and V50S ThinQ smartphones will receive the Android 12 update in the second quarter of this year while the LG Q52, LG Valvet, and LG Wing smartphones will get security updates.

The LG V60 smartphone is missing from the list of devices set to get the new update but since the device didn’t get released in the South Korean market, it is not included in the list for updates in South Korea.

The company is determined to not keep its customers hanging and thus, it has also revealed that the LG Wing and LG Valvet smartphones will also get the next major update for the operating system — Android 13, which is expected to release in Q3 2022.

Last month, LG had confirmed and released the Android 12 update for the Valvet smartphone, making it the first phone from the brand to run the latest Android 12 operating system. Although the company didn’t have a good track record earlier when it comes to software updates, things look different now.

A similarly quirky design is the LG Wing, the companies last major launch back in September before shutting down its smartphone division for good.
The video does not capture the complete modding process but showcases the different stages of the build. The user effectively gets rid of the swerving display along with the bottom display. He then proceeds to assemble the logic board onto the new body, which used to be the support panel for the Wings. However, that’s not the only part that the modder harvested off of the LG Wing, as it can be noticed that the bottom module of this makeshift build appears to be soldered to the main body.

Now comes the main challenge of making the so-called ‘smartphone sandwich’: the assembly of the screen, the logic board, and the battery to the smartphone’s body. Here, the modder decides to go an innovative route and places the battery directly under the display—quite a unique design, also a fire hazard. But we doubt this prototype design will be mass-produced anytime soon.

The finished product is shown to have a working screen, a pop-up camera module, working side buttons, and a custom LED strip. This build’s general smartphone functionalities are still questionable, but the mod does carry the spirit of LG phone’s crazy unique designs.

First reported by 9to5Google to be rolling out to the Verizon model in the United States, it could be possible that more variants are beginning to receive it now.

To recall, the LG Wing was released as the brand’s last major offering back in September 2020 before the company’s smartphone division shut down earlier this year for good. LG was on a streak of launching some really crazy designs, whether it was the LG G8X ThinQ’s dual-screen or the LG G5’s modular design, so seeing it call it quits was actually tragic.

Still, the company’s legacy lives on through software updates for some of its existing models, although that slowly seems to be coming to an end as well.

You see, LG’s company website had earlier specified that the LG Wing was not only eligible for Android 12 but also for Android 13. The phone was launched with Android 10 so three Android upgrades is actually quite a feat.

However, given how Android 11 for the phone has rolled out only now at a time when flagship-level phones from various OEMs are already receiving stable Android 12, it could be possible that the update is the Wing’s very last. A delay of around a year is no joke and if LG keeps up such a pace, it could mean Android 12 only by 2023 and Android 13 by 2024 – something that looks highly unlikely now for a brand that’s already shut down.

Regardless, we do hope that LG will surprise us all with Android 12.

Coming to the Android 11 build itself, it brings along the November 2021 security patch, which is a slight bump over the current September 2021 patch. The changelog mentions a new conversation bubbles feature and some other miscellaneous changes but that’s about it. These changes include support for Focus Mode through the quick settings, expanded support for Emergency Alerts, and the apparent removal of some mobile hotspot controls.

LG Wing gets a massive price cut in India (and the US)

The LG Wing was the last major device from LG Mobile before it announced its exit from the smartphone business. This dual-screen device which launched for Rs 69,990 (~$940) in India is now available for less than half the price at Rs 29,999 (~$401). In the US, you can grab the phone for $600 (from T-Mobile) which is still a significant cut from its $999 launch price.

If you are wondering if this is a good buy, maybe the fact that there is practically no device like this will convince you. Also, even though it is no longer making phones, LG has promised that it will update the Wing through to Android 13. That is three OS upgrades in total as the phone launched with Android 10 out of the box.

ZTE Axon 30 Pro and Axon 30 Ultra are the latest Chinese flagships

ZTE announced two new flagships last week – the Axon 30 Pro and the Axon 30 Ultra. Both are powered by the Snapdragon 888 processor and run MyOS based on Android 11, and that is pretty much where their similarities end.

The Ultra has a curved display with a 144Hz refresh rate, four rear cameras with three being 64MP sensors, a 4600mAh battery, and support for 66W fast charging. The Pro model has a flat display and drops the refresh rate to 120Hz refresh rate. It also has four rear cameras but only two of them are 64MP sensors and its battery is smaller at 4200mAh and charges slower at 55W.

Sony’s new Xperia flagships bring new camera features but no price tags yet

Sony also announced two new flagship phones last week – the Xperia 1 III and the Xperia 5 III. The new phones are the first in the industry to have a telephoto camera that can switch between two focal lengths (70mm and 105mm for 2.9x and 4.4x optical zoom). They both have a MicroSD card slot and audio jack, two features you will hardly find on a flagship these days. Sony has also increased the battery capacity and charging speed in both phones when compared to their predecessors.

If you don’t want a flagship, then there is the Xperia 10 III, a Snapdragon 690-powered phone. It has an OLED display like its more powerful siblings but drops the 120Hz high refresh rate for the standard 60Hz. While its battery capacity is the same at 4500mAh, it charges slower at 18W compared to the 30W the other two support.

Currently, it is testing the software upgrade for smartphones such as LG VELVET 5G, VELVET 4G, LG G8X, LG G8S, LG Wing, LG K52, and LG K42.

The LG VELVET 5G is slated to receive the Android 11 upgrade in April. The LG G8X is the other phone from the brand that is expected to receive the software update in Q2.

In Q3, the South Korean company will be offering the Android 11 OS update to LG VELVET 4G and LG G8S. The LG Wing, LG K52, and LG K42 are slated to get the update in the last quarter of the year.

LG has been quite slow in rolling out the Android 11 upgrade as it compared to other phone brands. The company began testing the Android 11 beta edition in December and it rolled out the update for LG VELVET 5G users in South Korea in January.

The LG V60 ThinQ 5G became the first phone outside the home market to receive the update. It was treated with the latest Android version in the previous month. LG is yet to confirm the Android 11 upgrade schedule for other markets.

In related news, LG is reportedly working on a smartphone with a rollable screen. The device is speculated to arrive in the market with the LG Rollable moniker. It was reported by a South Korean publication that the company has stalled the product. However, The Verge recently reported that the company denied putting the LG Rollable on hold. Apart from this, in January LG refuted rumors that claimed that it was planning to quit the smartphone business.

While the Korean giant has posted losses for several quarters, it has continued to show with the launch of its products that it hasn’t lost its drive for innovation, a trait that we wish was common among manufacturers.

In honor of LG’s contribution to the phone industry, here are six innovative smartphones that it has made, some of them from an era when it wasn’t a struggling phone company.

LG DoublePlay

LG DoublePlay

Dual display phones are not new to LG and one can even say that only a very few manufacturers have as much experience with dual displays as LG.

One of its earliest dual-display phones was the 2011 LG DoublePlay, an Android smartphone with a horizontal slider design that opened to reveal a QWERTY keyboard with a screen in between the keys.

The main display was a 3.5-inch screen with a 320 x 480 resolution and the smaller display was a 2.0-inch screen that divided the keyboard into equal halves giving it a split design.

What did the smaller display do? It could display music playback controls while you surfed the web on the main screen. The smaller display also served as an extension of the bigger one for certain features. For example, you could cycle through your bookmarks or open tabs on the small screen while the main browser was open on the larger display. There was also an app called Richnote that allowed you quickly jot down information or ideas without exiting the app on the main screen. There were multiple other uses too but one interesting feature LG added was the ability to push the app on the small screen to the larger display with a single button.

LG Crystal

LG Crystal

These days, we have seen companies launch phones with see-through back panels that allowed you to see their “internals”. These phones are meh when compared to the 2009 LG GD900 Crystal, a slider phone with an actual see-through part that didn’t show fake or ugly internals.

The LG Crystal’s transparent alphanumeric keypad is actually a touchscreen with alphabets and numbers etched on the surface. It had its own illumination which made it even cooler in the dark. And since it is actually a touchscreen, you could glide your finger over it and use it to navigate the device just like you would use a touchpad. It also supported multi-touch gestures such as pinch to zoom.

LG G Flex

LG G Flex

The LG G Flex was a device that packed multiple impressive technologies. From its concave curved Plastic OLED screen that made it comfortable to use, to its flexible LiPo battery, and the specially coated back panel that self-healed from scratches; the LG G Flex deserves to be in the smartphone hall of fame.

Other interesting features of the LG G Flex include its rear-mounted power and volume buttons as well as its rear-mounted IR blaster that allowed you to control electronic appliances by holding the phone upright rather than horizontally like a regular remote control.

LG G5

LG G5

The LG G5 may have been considered one of LG’s failures but it deserves to be mentioned as it is LG’s take on a modular smartphone, an area that only a few manufacturers dared to tread.

The G5 had what is called a Magic Slot that allowed you to remove the bottom part of the phone and swap it for an add-on accessory. LG called these accessories LG Friends. One of these add-ons is the LG Cam Plus which brought hardware camera controls such as a physical shutter button, a camcorder button, and a zoom dial. This add-on also had a built-in battery, thus bumping up the phone’s total battery capacity. Another add-on was the LG Hi-Fi Plus which had a Bang & Olufsen DAC for hi-res audio.

LG V10

LG V10

Remember we said earlier that LG isn’t new to dual displays, the LG V10 is another example of the Korean manufacturer’s obsession with dual screens. This flagship which launched in 2015 had two screens that sat atop each other.

The main screen was a 5.7-inch QHD screen and on top of it was a smaller 2.1-inch touchscreen next to the dual selfie cameras. By the way, LG was the first manufacturer to launch a phone with two front-facing cameras.

This second screen had its own display driver which means it worked independently of the main screen. It was always on and apart from displaying notifications, it also had shortcut icons for certain apps and toggles for features such as Wi-Fi, camera, Flashlight, and ring mode. You could also customize it to display a message of your choice. When the main display is in use, the smaller screen displayed the recent apps menu and shortcuts to features such as taking a screenshot.

LG Wing

The LG Wing is the manufacturer’s latest attempt at a dual-screen device and its approach is different from the others we have mentioned above.

This time, LG has hidden a second display behind the main one, and to access it, what you have to do is slide the 6.8-inch outer display, which is connected to a swivel mechanism, to the left. With the main display, which now sits in a landscape position, out of the way, you can now access the smaller 3.9-inch secondary display. When opened, the LG Wing looks like an upper case “T”. You can hold the phone in this mode or turn it upside down, so the larger display is at the bottom.

There are several use cases for this dual-screen design. You can watch a YouTube video on the main screen while scrolling through the comments on the second screen. Also, if you launch the camera app, the second screen will display the camera controls and you can decide to scroll through your gallery on the smaller screen and the larger display will show the current selection. A number of multimedia apps also take advantage of the second screen by displaying controls there while the content plays on the larger screen. These are a few of the use cases of the LG Wing.

So these were some of the interesting smartphones from LG over the past few years. Do you think we missed out on a particular model? Let us know down below.

In case you do not know, the company aimed to sell 2 million units in order to improve its brand image.

But unfortunately, the sales volume of LG Wing is merely 10% of that of the Galaxy Note20, a phone from Samsung Electronics that was released at around the same time.

The sales did not see momentum despite LG U+, the official telecom company of the LG corporation lowering the price of the handset by half via subsidies. Similarly, global sales also did not improve even though the firm tried to market it through advertisements and product placement in the latest Michael Bay movie called ‘Songbird’ and one of the popular American talk shows – Jimmy Kimmel Live!

In other words, the only other chance for LG Electronics to recover its brand image in the smartphone market is through the company’s second product under the ‘Explorer Project’. The firm has already confirmed that this upcoming device will be coming with a rollable display.

Not much is known about this phone except for a set of alleged specs and price that may or may not be true.
LG WING Specifications

For the unware, LG WING is the first smartphone from LG that came out of it’s LG Explorer project. It has a dual-screen, but unlike the LG G8x, both are attached to the same body. A swivel holds the outer screen that rotates clockwise by 90-degrees while the secondary screen is fixed behind. It features a 6.8-inch FHD+ P-OLED rotating display with a resolution of 2460×1080 pixels. The secondary screen is a smaller 3.9-inch and has a resolution of 1240×1080 pixels. Both the screens have 395 and 419 PPI respectively.

Powering the device is Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G 5G SoC. It is paired with 8GB RAM and 128/256GB storage variants. On the back, the LG Wing has an Oppo Reno4-inspired triple-rear camera setup. It features a 64MP f/1.8 primary sensor, a 12MP f/1.9 ultra-wide with 120° FOV, and a 13MP f/1.9 sensor with 117° FOV. Further, there is a 32MP pop-up selfie camera at the front.

Besides, the camera has various features like a Gimbal mode through which users can control the angle of the lens virtually. In addition to this, Other features include a 4,000mAh battery with support for 25W wired and 10W wireless charging, a MicroSD slot for storage expansion up to 2TB.

That said let’s wait and watch if LG overcomes the lackluster pre-orders scenario after launching the device in India.

While this figure is woefully unimpressive, it is still apparently in line with the company’s expectations.

LG Wing is priced at 1.09 million Won (roughly 940 US Dollars), which is quite a bit more reasonable than other smartphones with such a unique design or any foldable handsets. It arrives with a 6.8 inch primary display and a 3.9 inch secondary screen underneath. The device is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, allowing 5G networking support as well.

Editor’s Pick: Genshin Impact has brought in $60 million in first week, becomes the world’s No. 2 grossing mobile game

According to a PhoneArena report, the South Korean company only managed to get 1,275 units in pre orders. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 saw 80,000 units for pre orders. Although, this is not surprising since the former is one of the top brands in the entire industry while the former is struggling in the market, which is also why the brand is experimenting on smartphones with a unique design.

Pre order comparison(in Korea)
Galaxy Z Fold 2 : 80,000 units
LG Wing : 1,275 units (For reference, LG’s target is 3,000 units.)

Notably, a tweet from Sleepy Kuma on Twitter revealed the information as well as the comparison. However, it also revealed that the lackluster pre orders for the LG Wing aren’t something unexpected since LG was reportedly only aiming at 3,000 units in pre orders. In other words, the figures won’t be disappointing with the company only expecting such a small number of pre orders, which the brand will likely be met.

In its bid to relaunch its smartphone business, we have seen the South Korea company release a host of new smartphones in the mid-range and budget segment. But what has caught the attention of tech enthusiasts is definitely the LG Wing.

The Wing smartphone is a dual phone with a design like we have never seen before. The top display has a swivel which can rotate to an angle of 90-degrees. This is the main highlight of the phone and it would be interesting to see how that works from the inside. Zack Nelson of the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything has given us the opportunity to see the internals of the premium smartphone.

One of the noticeable thing about the Wing is the presence of some level of water and dust protection but there is no IP rating. The phone’s pop-up camera system is basically the same as that of others.

However, the major highlight of the device is definitely the rotating screen. The swivel design brings along some unique challenges. LG utilised a kind of lubricated plastic to ensure the swivel moves smoothly. Also, the two halves are slightly concave creating a void, which prevents any dirt and sand getting caught between the halves from being dragged along and scratching the secondary display.

LG had earlier claimed that the swivel will survive at least 200,000 cycles. The mechanism itself uses an O-shaped hinge that allows a ribbon cable to pass through the middle and power the main display.

One spring helps the top half fully rotate 90° when opening, then another spring helps you close the wing. Interestingly, there’s a tiny hydraulic damper that smooths out the motion.

You can check out the teardown video from above. Zack also promised to publish a durability test video soon. Watch out for that too.

The device was launched a week ago and it is now priced at 1,098,990 won.
A report(via Korean Herald) from South Korea says the device is priced at around $940(~Rs.69,115). This is really surprising considering its a first-generation product with a rotating-screen. The report adds that the company will hold a promotion for the entirety of October. Accordingly, users have the chance to grab a 70% discount coupon for screen replacement within two years of purchase. However, it seems there will be no pre-orders for the device.

LG Wing is a baby born out of LG’s Explorer project. It changes the way we look at dual-screen smartphones. Right from the first leaked video, the device has turned a lot of heads towards it. As per the concept, the display on LG Wing has two displays. The outer one is a rotating screen held in place by a swivel and rotating clockwise horizontally by 90-degrees. The secondary screen is fixed and hidden inside otherwise. Additionally, the company has used dual-spring, dual-lock, and hydraulic dampers for better durability.

LG Wing Specifications

Sporting Aurora Grey and Illusion Sky colors, the LG Wing features a 6.8-inch FHD+ P-OLED rotating display with a resolution of 2460×1080 pixels. The secondary screen is a smaller 3.9-inch and has a resolution of 1240×1080 pixels. Both the screens have 395 and 419 PPI respectively.

In 2020, among the best smartphones, you do not only get those silly rectangles since a lot of new form factors started to emerge. An example is the LG Wing, with its dual rotating display and its Swivel Mode. This year Motorola even launched the Razr 5G: the evolution of its first foldable phone which is reminiscent of the iconic Razr series. Even Microsoft is back to the smartphone market and with a new form factor: the Microsoft Surface Duo is a foldable phone which is able to rotate by 360 degrees and supports the Surface Pen! Here is a comparison between three of the most innovative phones of the year.

Design

If we only consider the look, Motorola Razr 5G is definitely the best one. It is a clamshell phone with a foldable display built with premium material which reminds you of the iconic feature phones from the Motorola Razr lineup. But if you want to find the most useful form factor for multimedia and productivity, then LG Wing and Microsoft Surface Duo are more interesting options. With the Swivel Mode, the former can be used as a gimbal for better stabilization, it can split apps into two screens or even open two apps at the same time in two displays for a better multi-tasking experience. On the other hand, Microsoft Surface Duo has a dual display with a folding hinge that can turn it into a tablet. It can open two apps side-by-side for an even more amazing multi-tasking experience, it can be rotated by up to 360 degrees to reach the “phone mode” and it even supports the Surface Pen stylus!

Display

The AMOLED displays of the Microsoft Surface Duo are the most interesting panels because they come with a higher resolution and they can be positioned side-by-side in order to provide a tablet-like experience. Further, as mentioned above, you get the support to Surface Pen for handwriting and drawing, just like the Samsung Galaxy Note series! With the LG Wing, you get a rotating display with still high resolutions, while the Motorola Razr 5G offers an internal smartphone-sized foldable display and a mini external display to check notifications, shoot selfies, and a few more actions.

Hardware/Software

The most powerful hardware department belongs to the Microsoft Surface Duo which is fueled by the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform providing better CPU and GPU performance than the Snapdragon 765G. But unlike the Motorola Razr 5G and the LG Wing, Microsoft Surface Duo lacks 5G connectivity. With the LG Wing, you get 5G, up to 8 GB RAM, up to 256 GB of native storage, and even a micro SD slot to expand the internal storage. Android 10 is out of the box on each of these handsets.

Camera

LG Wing, Motorola Razr 5G, and Microsoft Surface Duo can be considered mid-range camera phones. The best one is undoubtedly the LG Wing which sports the most complete camera setup. It includes a main 64 MP sensor with OIS and two ultrawide sensors, as well as the best microphones with ASMR mode. Even the front camera is better with its 32 MP resolution. Right after, we got the Motorola Razr 5G with its 48 MP main camera and a 20 MP snapper for selfies.

Battery

The LG Wing has the biggest battery, it lasts more on a single charge and it is the only one to support wireless charging. Right after, we got the Microsoft Surface Duo with a 3577 mAh unit. The Motorola Razr 5G has a small and below-average 2800 mAh battery because it is a compact foldable phone.

Price

We still do not know the price of the LG Wing, while Motorola Razr 5G and Microsoft Surface Duo retail about €1500/$1400 and €1200/$1400 respectively. If you want the best design, the Motorola Razr 5G is definitely the best alternative, especially for nostalgic users. But if you prefer having a better user experience, then you should discard it. If we look at the specifications, the LG Wing is the most convincing one due to its better cameras, bigger battery, best audio experience, and protection against water and drops. But the Microsoft Surface Duo is the king of productivity with its dual display reaching a 8.1-inch diagonal, its advanced software offering the chance to use apps side-by-side, and the Surface Pen. Which form factor would you pick?

Honestly, it is. The LG Wing is the first phone (product) from LG’s Explorer Project and its unique design solves smartphone usage problems we have lived with.

LG Wing Design

The LG Wing is a different take on dual display devices. There is the main display that rotates 90° to reveal a smaller screen. Both screens work together to provide new usage scenarios and improve on existing ones.

With a design like this, durability is important. LG says the hinge which allows the main screen swivel uses a dual-spring, dual-lock, and hydraulic damper. All these work together to prevent disconnection, allows for a uniform distribution of force, and also absorbs shocks when swiveled.

LG claims the LG Wing was put through multiple durability tests including stress tests, shock tests, bending tests, and touch sensors and key press tests. The swivel was also tested over 200 thousand times.

Worried about the inner screen getting scratched by the outer one? LG says it has applied a poly-oxy-methylene (POM) coating on the second screen that prevents it from getting damaged by the larger one. Just like a lot of LG’s other phones, the Wing is also MIL-STD-810G certified.

LG also tried to cut down the weight by reducing the thickness of the alloy frame and applying a perforation technique to reduce the mass. These reductions allowed for the weight of the phone to be cut down from over 300 grams to 260 grams.

LG Wing Dual Screen Usage Scenarios

The LG Wing’s swivel dual-screen form factor allows for a variety of usage scenarios. Some apps will automatically take advantage of the second screen when in the dual-screen mode such as YouTube which can display playback controls or comments on the secondary screen while the main screen plays the video. Music apps will also do something similar. If you are scrolling o your gallery, highlighted photos will show up on the main screen while the rest of the photos will be visible on the smaller screen. Video editing also works in a similar way.

Another usage scenario is to use two apps at the same time: so you can watch a movie or live stream on the main screen while tweeting about it or taking down notes on the smaller screen. if you have frequently used apps, you can save the combination and quickly launch them whenever you want.

All these scenarios on a standard smartphone will either have you creating a split-screen or dealing with distractions while in a particular app.

LG Wing Specs

The LG Wing has a main 6.8-inch 2460 x 1080 screen that swivels up 90° to reveal a smaller 3.9-inch 1240 x 1080 screen behind it. Both screens are OLED panels. The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 765G processor and has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

The LG Wing has a 32MP pop-up selfie camera, a first for an LG phone. The manufacturer has included a fall detection feature that causes the camera to retract when you drop it. This is a feature we have seen on other phones such as the OnePlus 7 Pro.

The back of the phone is home to three rear cameras arranged vertically and rocking a design similar to that of the Reno4. The primary camera (positioned in the middle) is a 64MP sensor and above it is a 12MP 120° ultrawide angle camera for shooting in swivel mode while the third camera is another ultrawide angle camera, but a 13MP sensor with a 117° FOV, for shooting in basic mode.

LG has included a number of cool camera features such as simultaneous recording from both the rear and selfie camera. There is also a gimbal mode that allows you to use the device just as you would use a phone mounted on a gimbal. In this mode, what you are recording is displayed on the main screen while the lower screen displays a virtual control akin to that on a gimbal with buttons such as an on-screen joystick for tilting and panning, a pan following mode, and a lock mode. LG says there are six motion sensors that work with a stabilization software to keep your videos steady.

The LG Wing has an in-display fingerprint scanner, packs a 4000mAh battery, and has support for wireless charging. It is also resistant to splashes and LG says the internals have a waterproof coating.

LG Wing Price and Availability

LG didn’t reveal the price of its new dual-screen smartphone neither did it say when it will go on sale. However, it has been reported that it will be available in the US.

For those unaware, the LG Wing is the latest device from the South Korean tech giant, which features a unique rotating display. Under the hood, the device will reportedly house the Snapdragon 765G, which is built on a 7nm process and is the first in the industry to have its 5G modem (Snapdragon X52) and RF system integrated into one chip solution. Usually, 5G processors generally have their 5G modems installed separately.

Editor’s Pick: Xiaomi Mi 10 Guofeng Ya Gray model is the exclusive smartphone partner for “Mulan” in China

Notably, the chip also supports both sub 6Ghz and mmWave spectrums alongside both 5G non-standalone and standalone networks. The chipset has a maximum download and upload speed of 2.76Gbps and 464.1Mbps. It also performs about 10 percent better than the base Snapdragon 765 chip in terms of graphical performance, beating even the HiSilicon 810 and Samsung Exynos 980 SoC.

LG Wing is expected to arrive with an OLED panel for its primary display and an LCD panel for its secondary screen. Its main display can swivel 90 degrees and reveal the second display underneath it. The wing shaped formation might be the reason behind its name. On the rear, we had reported on a triple gimbal motion camera module on the rear while the front is said to feature a popup selfie shooter. Although, we will have to wait for the 14th September 2020 launch conference to know for sure.

According to a LetsGoDigital report, renders made based on a recently published LG patent reveals that the Wing will feature what is being called a ‘Gimbal Motion Camera.’ This new module comprises a triple camera system on the top left corner of the device with sensors stacked vertically. The trademark was filed with the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) earlier this week.

We have heard of gimbal cameras recently, with Vivo grabbing a lot of attention with its X50 Pro. The device featured the world’s first smartphone with a gimbal camera which greatly improved image stabilization. For those unaware, a gimbal camera offers great stabilization, when compared to traditional OIS (optical image stabilization) solutions.

Unfortunately, finer details regarding the smartphone are still unknown. Although certain specs like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G has been rumored recently. As it known, one can rotate the main display of the LG Wing 5G at a 90-degree angle in a T-like formation. It was at the end of the previous month that Android Authority had shared a video of the device to showcase its design in real. Now, popular tipster Evan Blass has shared a press render of the LG Wing 5G to reveal its rear design and color variants.

The press render shows that the main rotating display of the LG Wing 5G has thin bezels on its left and right edges. The upper and lower bezels are slightly thick but are symmetrical in appearance. It is speculated that the device has a 4-inch secondary screen. The second screen is expected to offer an aspect ratio of 1:1. A physical fingerprint sensor cannot be seen on the device. Probably, it could be incorporated in the main screen of the device. Also, unclear is the placement of the selfie camera on the smartphone.

The LG Wing 5G will come in two colorways such as a white-blue gradient and black. It has a protruding rectangle-shaped camera module on its back. It has three lenses and an LED flash. The camera design appears similar to the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Even though the LG Wing 5G has two screens, it does not appear very thick.

A leaked video that had surfaced earlier this week revealed the presence of a USB-C port and a speaker grille on the bottom edge of the LG Wing 5G. Unfortunately, the rumor mill has not revealed any details on the specs of the LG Wing 5G. Unconfirmed rumors have claimed that it may not be a flagship device since it may feature a Snapdragon 7-series chipset.
The Explorer Project is LG’s new mobile category aimed at discovering new ways to interact with mobile devices, focusing on the evolving and ever-changing needs of today’s consumers and challenging established user norms. LG’s boldest, newest smartphone will deliver a new and different form factor and mobile experience that would be impossible to create with conventional smartphones.

Unlike LG’s own past offerings, this dual display has the display on top a swivel which can rotate to an angle of 90-degrees. When the top display slides out, it offers the utility of the second display behind it. Except for the rotating angle and the fact that both screen are full-displays, this is similar to what obtains during the flip phone era where a few devices could have their screens rotate up to reveal a keypad.

The use cases for this design are numerous but will depend on LG’s ability to provide software backing to the features. You can watch a video on the top screen in landscape mode while tweeting, chatting or perform other tasks on the bottom screen. We’ll find out more when it is officially released.

It is the first product from LG’s Explorer Project which we will learn more about next week. Ahead of the launch, a new hands-on video from Korea has surfaced on this gives us a closer look at the phone.

The LG Wing looks like a regular phone albeit a thick one but then the main display rotates on a hinge to reveal a smaller display behind the main one. This smaller display is about half the size of the larger one and is surrounded by thick bezels.

The video also shows the sides of the phone. There is a USB Type-C port at the bottom of the phone and it is flanked by a speaker grille on one side. While the video doesn’t focus on the back, we get a glimpse and can see the rear cameras are arranged vertically. It has been reported that the LG Wing will have three rear cameras.

The LG Wing is expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G processor and will command a price tag of about $1000. That price tag should not be surprising seeing as this is an unusual device and LG must have factored in the cost of having two displays on the same phone.

According to a TheElec report, the South Korean tech giant has finalized the name as LG Wing earlier today (7th September 2020). Furthermore, the company will also be choosing about 300 consumers to review the product for free for up to four weeks. The device will be launching on 14th September 2020, which was what we had previously reported on as being a possible date for the launch.

Unfortunately, not a lot about the device is currently known. We will have to wait for the launch event to obtain finer details like specifications of the device, although, rumors have pointed at the smartphone arriving with a Snapdragon 700 series chip (likely the SD765G). The unique device is garnering a lot of anticipation due to its unique design and dual display mechanism.

While the upcoming device has got us pretty excited, it appears to be the first of many more interesting projects LG is working on.

The short video teases the LG Wing and its unusual dual-screen design.

According to a press release by LG, the Korean giant is kicking off what it has called the Explorer Project which is described as both “an initiative and a category (that) will include devices that deliver distinctive and yet unexplored usability experiences”. LG also says it is “a strategy that tackles uncharted territory in the industry”.

LG explains that the Explorer Project is the beginning of a new direction in its smartphone strategy. It will still keep its new Universal Line which includes the LG VELVET while the Explorer Project will focus on “new usability discovered with innovative designs”.

LG says for the Explorer Project, it is working with a number of partners including streaming service, Tubi; Qualcomm; Rave; Ficto, and NAVER who it has partnered with previously for its Whale Browser which is designed for its LG Dual Screen.

More info about the Explorer Project will be revealed on September 14 at 10:00 AM (7:30 PM IST/2:00 PM GMT) on LG’s official YouTube channel and Facebook page.

This device is known as LG Wing and it had leaked multiple times in the past few days. Now, its price leaks as well.

The upcoming LG Wing is one of the bizarre smartphones of 2020. This is not the first time the company is doing something unique. A few years back, it tested waters with the concept of modularity. The result was half-baked “LG G5 and Friends”, which did not pan out very well.

The Wing is trying to fill the shoes left by G5 but will it succeed for the asking price of around $1,000? Yes, that’s the price tipped by the source of XDA Developers. It will be launching this fall in the US for the above-mentioned retail price.

With most flagship smartphones now starting at $1,000, there seems to be nothing wrong with the price tag of LG’s unique handset. But the question is how useful that secondary display will be? One of the leaked videos showcases the rotating screen to display the stock music app and call notification when the main screen is in use for navigation. Whereas, in the second video, we can notice the secondary panel in use for the in-game map while playing Gameloft’s Asphalt on the main screen.

These are only two examples of its use case but we are certain there could be much more. But will the developers take interest in optimizing their apps for an LG smartphone, considering the fact the company is not a major global player?

Also, it is worth noting that it is reported to feature mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G and not Snapdragon 865 like any other handsets in this range. Anyway, we will know the future of this unique LG phone when it will go official in the coming weeks.

Now, Android Authority has recently shared a new video that showcases the device live in action which offers us a first look at the upcoming smartphone.

Looking at the video, it seems that the device showcased is a near final version of the LG Wing. In other words, the launch of the handset shouldn’t be too far away. Furthermore, the video also offers us a better look at the device with both of its displays being utilized. For those unaware, LG Wing is an upcoming mid range handset from the South Korean tech giant which features a dual display with one screen swiveling sideways to reveal the secondary screen underneath.

Editor’s Pick: Realme X7 Geekbench listing emerge, Could be debuting as first Dimensity 800U powered smartphone

In the video, the primary display can be seen offering navigation to the user, while the second one offered a look at the media player, which played the music, later, a call stops the music and appears on the secondary screen. This enabled the maps to still function normally, allowing the person in the video to simply pick up the call without needing to cycle between applications.

This iteration of dual displays from LG is different from their previous launches of similar smartphones like the G8X and V60. But unlike a detachable secondary display, this dual screen is a part of the smartphone itself. Unfortunately, finer details like price and specifications are currently unknown, however, rumors have pointed at a Snapdragon 700 series chip (likely the SD765G), a triple camera module on the rear, and a price a bit higher than the LG Velvet.

The phone which the Korean blog ETNews says is codenamed “Wing” is said to have the main display which can swivel sideways to reveal a secondary screen underneath. The main display is a 6.8-inch display while the secondary screen will be a smaller 4-inch screen with a 1:1 aspect ratio. It’s expected to cost a bit more than the new Velvet phone when it arrives later this year.

According to ETNews, the LG Wing dual-screen phone will utilise its second screen for multitasking. For instance, the primary display can be used to view a photo while leaving the second screen open to access editing controls. That sounds a little different from LG’s current dual-screen devices like the G8X and V60 with their secondary screens designed mainly to run two different apps at once.

In addition, the phone is said to feature a Snapdragon 7-series processor with support for 5G jus like the Velvel. It will also sport a triple-rear camera array with a 64-megapixel main sensor.

LG is reportedly planning to release the phone in the second half of this year. The price will reportedly be in the region of 1 million won (around $817).
