Apple Struggles to Choose Between Lightning and USB-C for iPhone 15

Apple is preparing to introduce the highly anticipated iPhone 15 series in September. As always, the phone is expected to come with performance improvements and new features, but this year, it will feature a radical change. However, this year will see a significant change, as the company is compelled to adhere to European Union regulations. For the first time, Apple will release an iPhone equipped with a USB-C port, rather than the traditional Lightning port. Despite this, the company is not particularly eager to implement the change. Recent information even suggests that Apple initially considered an iPhone 15 with a Lightning port, before ultimately opting for the USB-C. Here are the details…

Apple Considered iPhone 15 With Lightning Port Before Swapping to USB-C

As you might expect, developing a flagship-level smartphone is no easy task. Companies need to start the development process well in advance. Apple is no exception in this regard. Whenever the company introduces a new iPhone, they have already begun working on the next model. This often leads to some information about the phone being leaked early on.

Some details about USB-C on the iPhone 15:

According to a researcher on Twitter by the username Unknownz21, Apple prepared the first prototype models for the iPhone 15 in January 2022. However, the decision to use USB-C wasn’t finalized until March. From that point on, work was focused exclusively on versions with USB-C, although “There was a version with a lightning port very early on, but it was quickly scrapped.”

Although the European Union forced the company to abandon the Lightning port, this development was not entirely surprising. For years, Apple has been using the USB-C port in its other products. However, the company persisted in using the Lightning port for iPhones and AirPods. This led to users within the ecosystem expressing frustration over having to use different chargers for different devices. Additionally, many people criticized the Lightning port for being slow. However, the European Union’s solution may not be permanent.

Apple, which dislikes being dependent on outside, may not need to rely on USB-C charging for too long. The company has been investing in a wireless charging technology called MagSafe for some time. If they can also enable data transfer using this feature, USB-C might remain only a temporary solution.

Apple iPhone 15’s USB-C Port May Just Be a Redesigned Lightning Port

We already know that Apple is finally shifting its iPhone lineup to USB Type C ports over from its proprietary Lightning Port design. However, this change might not actually bring many of the benefits that the former actually offers. So here are all the details.

Following the EU ruling, the Cupertino based giant was required to shift its iPhone to USB-C standards by 2024. However, various rumors have hinted that the iPhone 15 series that will launch later this year will bring this highly anticipated change. But a new rumor has suggested that it might be too soon to celebrate. Reportedly, there is a chance that the iPhone maker will bring the USB-C port with various limitations to its functionality. Meaning, it could just be another redesign version of the Lightning Port.

The rumor is based on a post on Weibo (Chinese microblogging website) that hints that the iPhone 15 models will house an authenticator chip. This chip was also foudn on the Lightning ports on the existing iPhones. In other words, you can’t just plug in just any cable with USB-C to charge or transfer data. Apart from support faster data transfer speeds and faster charging rates, the USB-C also enabled one to charge your device from any other manufacturer’s cable or allow data transfers.

However, the Weibo post suggests that Apple has design a custom IC (Integrated Circuit) that could be used on the new iPhone’s USB-C ports. Known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had also suggested that the base iPhone 15 models could also see a limit in data transfer speeds, while the 15 Pro and Pro Max models could feature Thunderbolt transfer speeds. Keep in mind that this is still unconfirmed news at the moment, so take it with a pinch of salt for now.

India May Force Apple to Adopt USB-C on iPhones

USB-C is getting more and more popular day by day. Almost all Android phones, modern laptops, charging adapters, and even game controllers use this port. While the technology world is slowly starting to use a single standard port, Apple continues to resist. The company insists on using the Lightning port on iPhone models that sell millions of units annually. But that’s changing; regulators are forcing Apple to use USB-C on the iPhone.

India May Force Apple to Ditch the Lightning Port

The European Union recently passed a law that forced Apple to use USB-C on iPhones sold in the EU. It seems that India is working on a similar law, following in the footsteps of the EU. Government officials are preparing a bill to make USB-C mandatory on all smartphones, tablets and laptops. Considering that the population of India is almost 1.4 billion, no company, including Apple, has a chance other than to comply with this rule.

In a government press release, Rohit Kumar Singh, secretary of Food and Public Distribution, Ministry of Consumer Affairs of India, said: “Broad consensus emerged among stakeholders on adoption of USB Type – C as a charging port for electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc Further, it was deliberate that a different charging port may be adopted for feature phones.”

Although India’s new bill is significant, it does not seem to change Apple’s plans. According to analysts and leaksters, the tech giant is working on an iPhone with a USB-C port. Ming-Chi Kuo claims that all iPhone 15 models will abandon the Lightning port in favor of USB-C. Yet Apple, by being Apple, will only add fast data transfer to Pro and Pro Max. However, for now, this information does not go beyond the claim.

Apple AirPods Pro 2 charging case will retain Lightning port: Kuo

While we had reported on rumors Apple planning on finally shifting some of its product line to support USB Type C port, it appears that the next gen AirPods Pro 2 will not be one of them and will retain the dated Lightning port.

In a series of new tweets, known analyst Ming Chi-Kuo stated that the brand will not include a USB C port on its highly anticipated second generation AirPods Pro. Kuo had previously stated that the Cupertino based giant will be moving a number of its products like the AirPods Pro to USB Type C format. However, the upcoming model won’t be making the shift as of yet. In other words, future iterations of Apple’s hearable products might be the first to move away from the Lightning port.

As of right now, the company is believed to be testing USB C ports for its iPhone 15 lineup. Apart from smartphones, it is also planning on eventually shifting its MagSafe charger, Mac keyboards and mouse to the USB standards. All of these currently have the Lightning port. The analyst added that “I predict the charging case of ‌AirPods Pro‌ 2 will still support Lightning, not USB C.” As of right now, the entire AirPods lineup, including the top end AirPods Max, feature the Lightning port.

For those unaware, the AirPods Pro 2 will be the first successor to the popular AirPods Pro that the iPhone maker had launched back in 2019. It is rumored to get rid of the stem design, in favor of an all ear design similar to the Beats Fit Pro. The earbuds will also apparently offer various health related features as well as a new an improved charging case and enhanced audio quality.

Despite the USB Type C format being almost universally adopted for its various benefits, Apple has still stuck to its proprietary Lightning port design for sometime now. However, a new report has suggested that soon certain products will be shifting away from the company’s dated standards.

The news arrives from known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who shared the information on Twitter. Recently, we have reported on the Cupertino based giant planning on shifting its popular iPhone series of smartphones to support USB Type C port. This would mark a major shift away from its Lightning Port. In the latest tweet, the analyst shared updates to his previous tweet, adding that additional Apple products would also make the switch to support USB Type C.

The other products includes the likes of new AirPods, Magic Keyboard, trackpad, and mouse, along with a new MagSafe chargers as well. Unfortunately, we still don’t know when exactly the move will occur and Kuo also stated that the shift is “in the foreseeable future.” For those unaware, the analyst had previously predicted that iPhones won’t be dropping the Lightning port until 2023.

So, it won’t be surprising if the brand has every other product make the shift as well. Although, we can likely expect the company to make this shift slowly. Keep in mind that this is still just speculation at this point, so take this report with a pinch of salt and stick around for more updates.

Apple iPhone 14 Pro won’t sport a USB-C port, Here’s why

Back in November 2021, we had reported on Apple possibly launching its upcoming iPhone 14 Pro series with USB Type C ports instead of the usual Lightning port. But unfortunately, this might not be the case.

According to iDropNews, the Cupertino based giant might retain the dated Lightning port for its iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models this year. The report adds that the reason for the brand not shifting to USB Type C ports is profits. While some had initially claimed that the iPhone maker is waiting since it planned to eventually shift to a portless design, the latest report says that Apple is solely driven by money, which isn’t exactly surprising.

For those unaware, the brand can charge royalties to any third party manufacturer that seeks to sell any cable that has a Lighting port. In other words, shifting to the universal standard USB-C would have it lose out on a steady stream of revenue. So as it stands, it is highly likely that the company will stick to its proprietary design till the time a portless iPhone is finally released in the market. Although, it’s not all bad, as the brand at least plans on upgrading the Lightning port on the iPhone.

The Lightning port in the new iPhone 14 Pro series will feature USB 3.0 speeds rather than the aging USB 2.0 speeds that has been common in past iPhones. Meaning, the next gen iPhone will support faster data transfer speeds, which should be a big plus for creators. With the brand launching ProRes, videos quality and size have both risen on iPhones. The news arrives from sources close to the matter, who added that this feature will not be arriving on the base iPhone 14 and the new iPhone 14 Max model.
