Apple continues to impress with its M series processors. At the recent WWDC 2023 event, the company introduced the Mac Pro model powered by the M2 Ultra, officially severing its last ties with Intel. Benchmarks for the new Mac Pro have now been released, and they are impressive. Here are the details…

How Powerful is the 2023 Mac Pro with M2 Ultra Chip?

The 2023 Mac Pro is a powerful computer designed for professional users who need a high-performance machine for tasks like video editing, 3D rendering, and scientific computing. It comes with the M2 Ultra chip, which is Apple’s most powerful chip to date. The M2 Ultra has 24 CPU cores, up to 76 GPU cores, and a 32-core Neural Engine. This makes the Mac Pro one of the most powerful computers on the market. But how powerful is it, really? The recently released benchmark results provide the precise answer to this question.

According to recent benchmark posted on Geekbench shows that the new Mac Pro with M2 Ultra chip scored 2,794 on the single-core test and 21,453 on the multi-core test. This is significantly faster than the previous generation of Mac Pro, which scored 1,378 on the single-core test and 10,390 on the multi-core test. This is a 20% increase in single-core performance and a 25% increase in multi-core performance over the M1 Ultra.

As you know M2 Ultra combines two M2 Max chips using its UltraFusion architecture. Bu da neden bu kadar yüksek performans sunduğunu açıklıyor. Ancak bu performans, oldukça yüksek bir fiyatla geliyor. The new Mac Pro starts at $6,999 and is available to order today. However, if you don’t need all of the power of the M2 Ultra chip, you may want to consider the Mac Studio, which starts at $3,999 and is also powered by the M2 Ultra chip.

Apple has transitioned to the Apple Silicon chips, and almost all the devices from the company come powered by its own processors, except for the Mac Pro, which was last launched in the year 2019.

The new Apple Mac Pro is expected to go official sometime next year, and it could end up being the most powerful computer ever launched by the company so far, thanks to the new M2-series processors from the brand.

According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the upcoming Apple Mac Pro will come powered by the new and powerful in-house chips named M2 Ultra and M2 Extreme with 24 CPU and 48 CPU cores, respectively. It will be coupled with a 76-core GPU or 152 cores GPU, along with up to 256GB of RAM.

It is also being reported that Apple is currently testing a Mac Pro configuration that features a 24-core CPU, 76 GPU cores, and 192GB of RAM. It runs the macOS Ventura 13.3 operating system, which is set to roll out today to eligible devices.

The new Apple Mac Pro is expected to launch next year, but no timeframe is available as of now. Ahead of the Mac Pro launch, the company will be launching new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros powered by the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, as well as a new Mac Mini powered by the M2 chip. These three devices are expected to go official in the coming month, most likely next month.

According to a Bloomberg report, developer logs showed that the Cupertino based giant is currently working on at least nine new Macs that will be equipped with four new variants of the M2 chipset. For those unaware, the M2 chip is the successor of the M1, which was the iPhone maker’s first proprietary processor that was based on the ARM architecture. And now, it seems that the brand is developing a M2 chip, the M2 Pro, the M2 Max, and possibly even a successor to the M1 Ultra as well.

Out of the nine upcoming Macs, Apple might be working on a MacBook Air with an M2 chip that features an 8 core CPU and a 10 core GPU. Apart from this, a new Mac mini is also in the works that will house a variant of the upcoming M2 Pro chipset. Furthermore, the company is also internally testing a new entry level 13 inch MacBook Pro with M2 chip, along with 14 and 16 inch MacBook Pro models that feature M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. The M2 Max CPU consists of a 12 core GPU and 38 core GPU paired with 64GB of memory.

The report adds that there is also a Mac Pro in the pipeline, which will house the successor to the M1 Ultra that made its debut in the Mac Studio. Notably, Bloomberg stated that the internal testing phase is a “key step” in the development process, so the new PCs might be released within the arriving months. Apple is due to refresh some of its Mac models, so stay tuned for more updates regarding this matter.

According to a MacRumors report, the Cupertino based giant has yet to release a new Intel based Mac. The new PC will be a Mac Pro, which is its top of the line and most powerful computer. In other words, the brand might still not be ready to transition its high end model Mac Pro to its custom Apple Silicon. As per the report, the iPhone maker is working on two new Mac Pro models, with one arriving with a major redesign while the second model will feature the current design but with refreshed specifications.

Notably, while Apple M1 series chips have proven capable in the MacBooks, it seems that the company is not completely confident enough to shift its desktop grade professional workstation to its custom silicon. For those unaware, Mac Pro’s are usually targeted towards professionals like animators, photographers, Hollywood insiders, and others. So, we can expect the upcoming Mac Pro to feature Intel’s Xeon series chipset that arrives with “advanced performance, security, efficiency, and built-in AI acceleration to handle IoT workloads and more powerful AI,” as claimed by Intel.

This also implies that Apple has yet to completely cut ties with Intel, despite its MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac series shifting to its custom chips. One reason for the Mac Pro lineup not being shifted to the new chips is likely due to their architecture, since the Apple Silicon is based on an entirely different architecture than the Intel processors.
