Giant Interactive Group and Baidu’s AI team have worked together to produce China’s first AI-developed mobile game character called “Space Shark.” The AI image is created using the same technology behind the search giant’s ChatGPT alternative ERNIE Bot. Baidu’s Wenxin large model team was responsible for the training, generation, and in-depth optimization of this AI image, while Giant’s team handled the overall planning and in-game development.

The AI image is being used in the online game Super Sus: Who is the Impostor, which was developed by Giant. Super Sus allows users to create their own rules and add user-generated content, such as new skins and imagery. Genshin Impact is one of the most popular games on the Android Playstore right now and has become somewhat of a benchmarking tool for smartphone reviewers due to its high CPU and GUP demands.

Reviewers and tech enthusiasts have reported that the smartphones with the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC have not been able to run the game on desired settings due to them being locked at ‘default’ but that reportedly changes now.

According to a new report by ITHome, the game developers have released a new update for Genshin Impact that adds support for the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC and upcoming MediaTek 9000 SoC devices. The changelogs show that post update, the settings will no longer be stuck at “default” and can be changed according to the user’s needs for the best experience.

This means that owners of devices that host the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC like the Xiaomi 12, the Realme GT 2 Pro, and the Moto Edge X30 can now play the game at a higher resolution in contrast with the previously locked resolution of around 600p.

For those unaware, Genshin Impact is a free-to-play action role-playing game developed by Chinese developer miHoYo, and first published in 2020. The game features an anime-style open-world environment and an action-based battle system using elemental magic and character-switching.

The vast fantasy world features seven countries which you can freely explore, meet companions with different personalities and unique abilities and fight against powerful enemies with them.

A few days ago, on 11th November, PUBG: New State was launched for Android and iOS devices as a new battle royale game set in the future. The game has been popular as it has now crossed 10 million downloads on the Google Play Store.

This isn’t surprising as the game had over 55 million pre-registrations prior to its release. It has also claimed the #1 spot in over 165 countries, including South Korea, the United States, Germany, India, and Saudi Arabia, among others.

This new PUBG: New State game has been launched globally in around 200 countries. The game’s publisher Krafton has not yet announced the number of downloads taken place on the Apple App Store for iPhones and iPads.

The game had faced some post-launch issues including server crashes and smartphone bricking. However, the developers seem to have addressed and fixed those issues with a couple of updates. Several users had reported on the day of the game’s launch about the unresponsive loading screens, inability to join a match, and more.

Krafton has put in several new features into the game to make it more appealing and exciting for battle royale players. For starters, the storyline is based in the year 2051 and thus the players have access to futuristic weapons and vehicles.

Earlier this year, the company had launched Battlegrounds Mobile India which is available exclusively for Indian users. The game recently crossed 50 million downloads in the country before it was released on iOS.

Contra, a classic side scrolling run and gun shooter game, is making its way to smartphones soon. Konami has recently announced that it will be launching the game on iOS and Android in July 2021, even sharing a short trailer of the game on YouTube.

Notably, Konami has partnered up with Tencent to bring the game to the mobile platform. While versions of the game were seen before on Android, this is the first official release of one of the most iconic video games from Konami. For those unaware, Contra is a side scrolling game that was designed around arcades to offer a run and gun style of gameplay. Some versions of the game have even been available on PC, PlayStations, and Xbox consoles as well.

The new game has been titled “Contra Returns” and Konami has promised to offer an “authentic new take” on the series along with ” new graphics, gameplay upgrades, and more.” From what we know so far, the game will have customizable weapons and would even feature new characters and a storyline. The players will have to unlock new skills through playing the game to navigate through multiple stages.

In other words, Konami is bringing a modern touch to the game while also promising the same thrill as the original arcade versions. Contra returns will feature over 200 levels, new game modes, including a 1v1 and even 3v3 player vs player modes. Electronic Arts has just announced that it is planning on acquiring another gaming studio. With a deal of 2.4 billion US Dollars, the company aims to acquire Glu Mobile by the second quarter of this year.

As per a VentureBeat report, the new deal marks the second major acquisition from EA in recent weeks, with it previously buying out publisher Codemasters. For those unaware, Glu is best known for a Kim Kardashian Hollywood game, along with other mobile games like Tap Sports Baseball, Dine Dash Adventures, and Disney Sorcerer’s Arena. The publisher is a known for mobiles titles with big budget that often include full 3D visuals. Despite this, it still offers its games as free to play titles that run for years and generate revenue through in app microtransactions.

Notably, this business model is what Electronic Arts wishes to switch towards in the future, and has even repeatedly informed its investors as well. EA CEO Andrew Wilson said that “Our acquisition of Glu combines amazing teams and deeply-engaging products to create a mobile games leader with proven expertise across many fast-growing genres. Mobile continues to grow as the biggest gaming platform in the world, and with the addition of Glu’s games and talent, we’re doubling the size of our mobile business.”

The Apple App Store in China has removed a large number of mobile games during the month of December 2020. Around 48,000 gaming based applications had been removed from the app ecosystem, which were found breaking the local rules and regulations.

For those unaware, China’s mobile gaming regulator requires every title to receive a special license from the nation’s National Press and Publication Administration, prior to its launch. This license confirms that the game conforms to the local guidelines and rules, which are known to be strict regarding the content that is allowed to be displayed. Now, Apple is keeping the apps they include in their App Store in check as well, which is something Android stores were already enforcing. This apparently led to a massive number of titles being removed from the App Store, as per a SensorTower report.

As per Sensor Tower’s report, 5,500 apps were removed in July 2020, followed by another 27,000 games in August. However, December saw the biggest purge with over 40,000 titles being removed from the App Store. At the moment, there is still a possibility for the removed games to return to the Apple App Store sometime in the future, after acquiring the license.

Previously, the Apple App Store was seen as a sort of a ‘grey market’ in China, despite strict regulations being placed on content in the region. However, publishers and studios will no longer be able to benefit from this loophole. China is one of the largest gaming markets in the world, especially for mobile gaming. So, the removal of apps from the App Store highlights the government’s message of ” follow the rules or it’s closed to you.”

A clone of the popular US game Among Us is the talk of the town in China. Known as Werewolf Among Us, it is currently topping the download charts on App Store in the country. The game has even managed to surpass giants like Peacekeeper Elite and Honour of Kings.

As per an SCMP report, the game is at the top of the Free Game download charts on Apple’s App Store. Albeit being developed by a recondite developer, it sits on the top with 116,000 downloads as of November 2. Further, App Tracking firm Qimai’s Data says the Clone has more than 478,000 total downloads so far.

That said, Tencent Holdings’ giants like Peacekeeper Elite(China’s PUBG). And Honour of Kings trail the charts with 111,000, and 112,000 downloads respectively behind Werewolf Among Us.

How did it get Popular?

However, this is not the only clone App of the American Video Game. IP(Intellectual Property) doesn’t generally protect Game Mechanics. Hence, popular games usually see a lot of rip-offs bombarding the market.

Having said that the most popular of them all, Werewolf Among us is developed by a small developer, Shenzhen Youliang Technology. And launched on October 28. Initially, it was thought of as just another version of another in-party game Werewolf that’s already popular in China. However, it has gained steam recently thanks to its OG version’s popularity that has a better-dedicated user acquisition budget.

Still, the number crunches of downloads are crazy considering it’s just been a week since launch. Anyway, the rip-off version has cloned the Map, Game Mechanics of the OG Among Us. The only difference is reportedly the setting of the game in a Medival Castle instead of Space.

For those unaware, FAU-G was announced over a month ago after the Indian government had banned PUBG Mobile alongside 118 other Chinese applications. This arrives due to rising political tensions between India and China, as well as, military clashes between the Indo-China borders. As per the report, it is also the highest earning mobile game in the RPG genre in the world this week and ranks above other known titles like Monster Strike and Fate/Grand Order, which arrive in second and third places respectively.

Genshin Impact has seen great success across the globe, especially in China, where the Chinese version of the game brought in close to $25 million in player spending so far on Apple’s App Store alone, which is close to 42 percent of its total revenue. While the game has become popular globally, its primary market is still its home country, with $35 million or about 58 percent of its revenue coming from China alone.

At the moment, Genshin Impact is also the third highest grossing mobile game title in China, during its launch week. Similarly, it also ranked third in Japan and fifth in the US in terms of revenue generating mobile games. Furthermore, the App Store brought in the majority of the revenue, accounting for $42 million or 70 percent of the total revenue. On the other hand, Google Play brought in just $17.7 or about 30 percent of the total revenue.

Earlier today (8th May 2020), Sensor Tower, a known analytics firm, published a new report, which detailed the rankings of the top Chinese mobile game publishers. The rankings also analyzed both Apple App Store and Google Play Store revenue for the month of April 2020.

In the report, the global App Store and Google Play’s mobile game revenue ranked 30 of the top Chinese game publishers. According to the data, these publishers raked in more than 1.74 billion US Dollars just in the month of April. This marks a record high increase of 14 percent over March 2020 and accounts for 27.5 percent of the total current global mobile game market’s revenue.

Looking at the list, Tencent Games leads the Chinese mobile gaming publisher rankings. Other notable names in the lists include NetEase that comes in second followed by Lilith Games and FunPlus at third and fourth spots respectively.

Call of Duty Mobile, which is popularly known as COD Mobile is one of the popular smartphone games in recent years. Life in China is gradually returning back to normal but the past few months have been a tough one for the country due to the Coronavirus epidemic. The government had to effect a lockdown which made it impossible for people to move freely and that was highly helpful in curbing the spread. Online gaming and TV came to the rescue of Chinese families who had to adjust their routine in the face of the outbreak and quarantine efforts. That has translated to huge revenue for the game developers, as per a report by Sensor Tower. Although the report is a compilation of data on ap stores globally, most of the revenue came from China.

Data collated by the firm shows that in February 2020, Tencent’s “PUBG Mobile” and “Peace Elite” attracted more than US $191 million in revenue globally, five times that of the same period last year. The two games were ranked first in the global mobile game bestseller list. 71% of the revenue came from the Chinese market while the US market accounted for just 7.3%.

King of Glory and its overseas edition ranked second with $121 million in revenue. The Chinese version contributed 92.6% of revenue, followed by the Thai version “Arena of Valor” which contributed 3.7%.

Mixi’s “Monster Strike” is ranked as the third highest-grossing game which AFK Arena is ranked at the fourth position. DBZ Dokkan Battle came in at the fifth spot and Candy Crush Saga is ranked sixth.

The rest of the top 10 list is occupied by Rise of Kingdoms in number seven spot, Gardenscapes ranked eighth, Coin Mast in ninth position and Pokemon Go complete the top 10.
