If you’re not a student, you’re probably working or perhaps looking for a job. After years of studying, completing university, and maybe even earning a master’s degree, what kind of job would truly fulfill you? As a technology enthusiast, the answer might lie in Silicon Valley giants like Apple or Microsoft, or perhaps in China’s bustling tech production centers. But if you have even bigger dreams, there’s an opportunity that’s literally out of this world. NASA is seeking potential Mars astronauts! Here are the details…

NASA Call for Mars Astronauts and Future Explorations

NASA has announced an exciting new job opportunity for those who dream of becoming an astronaut. On the application webpage, the space agency states, “For over sixty years, NASA astronauts have ventured into space, and since 2000, they have maintained a continuous presence there.”

Furthermore, the agency highlights its ambitious future plans: “Now, NASA’s Artemis program is preparing to land the first woman and the next man on the moon. The Orion spacecraft atop the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket will carry humans farther into space than they have gone before — for missions to the moon and eventually to Mars.”

NASA has also disclosed how much an astronaut earns. According to the organization’s announcement, space explorers will receive an annual salary of $152,000. While this is a quite substantial income, for many, it’s not about the money but rather the experience of the job. Nevertheless, if you love both, there’s no reason not to apply, provided you meet the necessary qualifications, of course.

Be a U.S. citizen

Have a master’s degree* in a STEM field, including engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics, from an accredited institution

Have a minimum of three years of related professional experience obtained after degree completion (or 1,000 Pilot-in-Command hours with at least 850 of those hours in high performance jet aircraft for pilots) For medical doctors, time in residency can count towards experience and must be completed by June 2025

Be able to successfully complete the NASA long-duration flight astronaut physical

The master’s degree requirement can also be met by:

Two years of work towards a doctoral program in a related science, technology, engineering, or math field

Completed Doctor of Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, or related medical degree

Completion (or current enrollment that will result in completion by June 2025) of a nationally recognized test pilot school program

Certainly, meeting these conditions is quite challenging. Nevertheless, even for a topic that was once a dream, such as going to space, our ability to now create online announcements highlights the clear impact of technological advancements on the pace of progress.

NASA‘s recent feat in space communication has taken a whimsical yet groundbreaking turn. Earlier this month, the Psyche spacecraft, situated 19 million miles from Earth, transmitted a unique message: a 15-second ultra-high definition video of an orange cat named Taters playfully chasing a laser dot. This event marked the first time a UHD streaming video was sent from deep space to Earth using laser technology.

The spacecraft was launched recently in October

The Psyche spacecraft, launched in October, is en route to study a metal-rich asteroid located in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The mission’s success in transmitting this video is more than just a quirky space anecdote. It represents a significant leap in space communication technology.

The video was initially uploaded to the spacecraft before its departure and then beamed back to Earth on December 11. The transmission, using a flight laser transceiver aboard the spacecraft, reached Earth in just 101 seconds. To put this into perspective, Psyche was about 80 times farther from Earth than the moon is at the time of transmission. The data transfer rate achieved was an impressive 267 Mbps.

What makes this achievement particularly noteworthy is the efficiency and speed of the data transfer. According to Ryan Rogalin, the receiver electronics lead for the project at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the video was sent back to Earth faster than most broadband internet connections. In fact, after the video arrived at the Palomar Observatory, it was relayed to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory over the internet, and this terrestrial connection was actually slower than the laser signal from deep space.

This successful demonstration of laser communications from deep space opens new possibilities for future space missions. It not only offers a faster way to transmit data across vast distances but also highlights the potential for more efficient communication in space exploration. As we continue to reach further into the cosmos, advancements like these pave the way for more robust and reliable communication systems, essential for the success of long-duration space missions.

Artificial intelligence technologies are increasingly prevalent, finding applications across various industries. Many companies are incorporating AI into their products and services, enhancing overall quality and efficiency. While this trend brings about positive advancements, it also raises certain concerns.

You may have come across statements predicting that “AI will take over your job.” Recently, meteorologists have joined the ranks of those potentially facing unemployment, as NASA and IBM collaborate on an AI model designed to monitor the Earth’s climate 24/7. Here are the details…

NASA and IBM AI Partnership for Climate Observation

NASA and IBM are jointly developing an AI model focused on weather and climate observation. This technology is expected to bring revolutionary changes compared to existing meteorological applications. Although AI is already in use in this field, the current models are task-specific, akin to technologies like ChatGPT, functioning as simple emulators, as per IBM’s description.

NASA and IBM, however, aspire to go beyond accurate predictions. Their collaborative effort aims to create an AI system that continuously observes the Earth’s climate and weather conditions around the clock. Anticipated features of this AI model include predicting meteorological events, extracting high-resolution information from low-resolution data, and forecasting occurrences ranging from aircraft turbulence to forest fires.

The shared objective of both institutions is to enhance the accuracy of weather predictions and mitigate potential disasters. For instance, this technology could predict forest fires caused by extreme heat, prevalent in various parts of the world, including our country, during the summer months. While achieving 100% accuracy may be challenging, the AI model is expected to be highly beneficial for implementing preventive measures.

The integration of this technology into our daily lives, drawing on data from NASA satellites and IBM technologies, remains uncertain.

NASA reported that the Hubble Space Telescope went into a safe mode on November 23rd due to an ongoing issue with its gyroscopes. The space agency is actively working to restart the telescope’s scientific operations. Despite this problem, the instruments of the Hubble remain steady, and it’s in good condition. Here are the details…

What Happen to the Hubble Telescope?

Launched in 1990, the Hubble has been exploring the universe for more than 33 years, playing a crucial role in enhancing our knowledge of space and supporting various space-related studies. According to NASA, the telescope entered safe mode automatically because one of its three gyroscopes provided inaccurate measurements. Gyroscopes are used to gauge the telescope’s rotation speed and position. During safe mode, scientific activities are paused while the telescope waits for new instructions from Earth.

Initially, the Hubble shifted to safe mode on November 19th. Although NASA’s team managed to restore operations the following day, an unstable gyroscope caused a halt in scientific activities again on November 21st. After a successful recovery, the Hubble re-entered safe mode on November 23rd.

Will the Hubble continue its mission?

NASA’s team is currently conducting tests to pinpoint the issue and find a solution. If necessary, they’ll adjust the spacecraft to function with a single gyroscope. During the final space shuttle servicing mission in 2009, six new gyroscopes were installed on the Hubble. Presently, three of these gyroscopes are still operational. While the Hubble ideally uses three gyroscopes for optimal efficiency, it can carry on with scientific observations using just one gyroscope if required.

NASA anticipates that, alongside other observatories like the James Webb Space Telescope, the Hubble will persist in making groundbreaking discoveries over the next decade and potentially longer, contributing significantly to scientific exploration during this time.

NASA has always been quite forward-thinking, always down to change the way we explore space. This time, however, it’s not about rocket launches or spacewalks. Instead, the agency is bringing space to our screens, for free, with the launch of its new streaming service, NASA+.

The service will apparently be completely free when it launches

Set to go live on November 8, NASA+ promises an ad-free experience packed with an exclusive look at NASA’s live shows, which have been recognized with Emmy Awards for their high production quality. Viewers will also be treated to a curated selection of original series that highlight the agency’s groundbreaking missions.

For a bit of context, other streaming platforms like Disney+ charge around $7.99 per month for their basic plan, while Curiosity Stream offers a selection of science and history documentaries for about $2.99 a month. In contrast, NASA+ is completely free and requires no subscription, giving everyone access to the wonders of space.

But the streaming service is just one part of NASA’s broader digital transformation. The agency is also overhauling its app and flagship and science websites to create a more cohesive and informative user experience. These updates are expected to align with the launch of NASA+ and further enhance access to NASA’s vast array of multimedia content.

NASA is currently going through digital transformation to broaden the accessibility and reach of its platforms, providing a world-class web experience for audiences worldwide. The space agency aims to modernize its primary and science websites, offer an on-demand streaming service, and enhance the NASA smartphone app, opening a new universe of content for users.

The Space Agency will also focus on bringing more content to fans and enthusiasts

The in-progress preview of the redesigned website is currently accessible, inviting the public to explore and share feedback at beta.nasa.gov. According to Jeff Seaton, the chief information officer, the intent is to inspire humanity through a cohesive, top-tier NASA web experience. Seaton asserts that the renovation will significantly enhance the user experience by modernizing their primary websites, making it’s information more accessible, discoverable, and secure.

The upgraded web portals will serve as a continuously expanding, unified hub for the agency’s information, including mission updates, climate data, and Artemis program developments. With a shared search engine, integrated navigation, and superior publishing capabilities, the updated nasa.gov and science.nasa.gov promise to deliver an interconnected, topic-focused experience.

Following the launch of the beta site, NASA will continuously refine it based on user feedback. The revamped platform will also incorporate content from other popular sites, ensuring integrated and user-friendly access to information previously scattered across multiple websites.

Further enhancing its digital presence, NASA will launch a new streaming platform, NASA+. The ad-free, no-cost, family-friendly service will provide users access to the agency’s Emmy Award-winning live coverage and original video series. Marc Etkind, Associate Administrator, Office of Communications at NASA, highlighted that the platform will “put space on demand and at your fingertips.”

NASA+ will be accessible via the NASA App on iOS and Android devices, streaming media players like Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, and the web. The goal of this integrated digital evolution is to share NASA’s mission, discoveries, and innovation more effectively and build stronger connections with audiences worldwide.

The space race is heating up, and Canoo Technologies, a leading electric vehicle manufacturer, has successfully delivered three cutting-edge electric transport vehicles (CTVs) to NASA‘s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. These specially designed vehicles will play a crucial role in the upcoming Artemis mission, marking a significant milestone for the United States‘ manned space exploration program. Scheduled to commence service by the end of 2024, the three CTVs will support NASA’s Artemis 2 mission, which will be the nation’s first manned orbit in over half a century. With monthly missions planned thereafter, the Artemis program aims to revitalize space exploration and establish a long-term human presence on the Moon.

NASA’s Crew of Vehicles also includes Tesla Model X EVs

Canoo’s CTVs boast a multifunctional platform that prioritizes cabin space, practicality, and productivity while maintaining a compact footprint. These vehicles have been meticulously engineered to accommodate four astronauts donning Orion Crew Survival System pressure suits, alongside support staff and specialized equipment.

While the CTVs are not actual space rovers, they play a pivotal role in transporting personnel from the Neil A. Armstrong Operations and Inspection Building to the 39B Complex. This is where the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft are prepared for liftoff.

Canoo was awarded the contract for manufacturing the three vehicles in April 2022. Collaborating closely with NASA representatives, Canoo prioritizes astronaut safety and comfort during their journey to the launch pad.

Expressing his pride in the collaboration, Artemis launch director Charles Blackwell-Thompson stated, “I believe that everyone who sees these new vehicles will be as proud of this manned Artemis mission as I am.” The partnership between Canoo and NASA demonstrates a shared commitment to sustainable transportation and highlights NASA’s adventurous spirit.

In addition to Canoo’s vehicles, NASA’s transport fleet includes Tesla Model Xs, used to transport the Crew Dragon, and a custom Airstream, which transports astronauts aboard the Boeing Starliner to the launch pad. The integration of advanced electric vehicles signifies NASA’s dedication to innovative technologies that drive progress in space exploration. Canoo’s contribution to the mission represents a key step toward sustainable and efficient transportation in space exploration.

In an exciting announcement, a scientist from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) revealed that the agency is actively pursuing the development of lunar resources. The initial focus lies on extracting oxygen and water, with future plans to expand to valuable elements such as iron and rare earths. NASA’s goal is to commence excavation of lunar soil by 2032, marking a significant step towards the establishment of sustainable space exploration.

Lunar soil excavation is expected to scale up by the year 2032

Central to NASA’s ambitious moonshot program is the advancement of commercial opportunities in space. Gerald Sanders, a seasoned rocket scientist at NASA’s Johnston Space Center, emphasized the importance of quantifying potential resources, including energy, water, and lunar soil, to attract commercial investment. Sanders believes that developing access to lunar resources will be pivotal in reducing spaceflight costs and fostering a circular economy, ultimately facilitating the growth of the space industry.

To comprehensively understand the resource profile of the moon, NASA is planning to send a test drilling rig to the lunar surface later this month. The agency aims to scale up lunar soil excavation by 2032 and establish a pilot processing plant. Initial customers are expected to be commercial rocket companies seeking to harness lunar resources for fuel and oxygen, paving the way for a new era of space exploration and commerce.

Australia’s Space Agency is also actively contributing to this lunar endeavor. They are collaborating on the development of a semi-autonomous rover capable of collecting samples of lunar regolith during NASA’s upcoming lunar missions. By as early as 2026, this rover will gather samples containing oxide lunar soil, which will then be used by NASA to extract oxygen using a dedicated device.

NASA’s plans extend beyond the moon, as they intend to leverage the knowledge and experience gained from lunar missions to facilitate future manned missions to Mars. With their sights set on returning American astronauts to the moon by 2025, including the historic first woman and person of color, NASA is demonstrating its commitment to diversity and inclusion in space exploration.

The journey to the moon holds vast potential, not only for scientific advancements but also for the growth of a thriving commercial space industry. The future is bright, and the moon looks like it will become humanity’s stepping stone to the stars.

The groundbreaking discovery sheds light on the failed mission and raises questions about the challenges of commercial moon landings.

Contact with the lander was lost during the early stages of the Mission

Japan’s ispace company had embarked on an ambitious endeavour to achieve the nation’s first-ever commercial lunar landing. However, the attempt took a devastating turn when contact with the lunar lander was abruptly lost during the early hours of the mission.

The HAKUTO-R Mission 1, as it was known, aimed to touch down on the moon’s surface in the Atlas Crater, situated at the southeastern edge of Mare Frigoris. The mission had garnered significant attention due to its payload, which included the UAE’s pioneering lunar rover, the Rashid rover. Unfortunately, both Japan’s lunar lander and the UAE’s rover suffered from mission failures.

The crash site of the Japanese lunar lander was recently discovered through images captured by NASA’s lunar orbiter and transmitted back to Earth. The exact cause of the crash remains unknown, but the finding serves as a reminder of the immense challenges and risks involved in space exploration.

The failure of the HAKUTO-R mission is a setback for Japan’s aspirations in the commercial space sector. However, it is crucial to view such failures as learning opportunities. The data and insights gathered from this mission will undoubtedly prove invaluable for future lunar exploration endeavours.

As the global space community continues to push the boundaries of human knowledge and technology, setbacks are an inherent part of the journey. Japan’s commitment to space exploration remains resolute, and the lessons learned from the HAKUTO-R mission will guide future endeavours, inspiring innovative approaches and encouraging the pursuit of breakthroughs in lunar exploration and beyond.

The discovery of the crash site by NASA’s lunar orbiter serves as a poignant reminder of the risks and challenges that lie ahead. It underscores the importance of collaboration, continuous improvement, and determination as we strive to unlock the mysteries of the moon and the vast expanse of space.

Lockheed Martin is taking a giant leap in lunar infrastructure by launching a spinoff company called Crescent Space. Its aim is to provide reliable communication systems for the long-term presence of humans on the Moon. The company’s first project is a satellite network called Parsec, which will connect the Moon and Earth through a constellation of small lunar satellites. The network will provide a non-stop connection between astronauts, their equipment, and people back home. Furthermore, Parsec will also help with navigation, making it an essential tool for future lunar missions.

One of the most significant benefits of Parsec is its lunar equivalent to GPS, which will provide astronauts with their precise positions and directions back to base. This technology will help keep explorers in touch with Earth and assist with spacecraft course changes. Moreover, it will be crucial for those on lunar soil, helping a rover crew to return home without driving into dangerous craters.

Lockheed Martin plans to have Crescent’s first Parsec nodes operational by 2025, with the company providing the satellites. While the startup may seem premature, with NASA‘s Artemis program not conducting a lunar flyby until late 2024 and a landing at the end of 2025, the company is well-positioned to support NASA’s Artemis Moon landings and other exploratory missions. CEO Joe Landon, formerly a Lockheed Martin Space VP, is optimistic about the future of the startup, hoping to profit from the increasing interest in lunar missions.

Lockheed Martin’s move to create Crescent Space and the launch of Parsec marks a significant advancement in lunar infrastructure. The company’s involvement in the space race is likely to benefit both private and national efforts to explore the Moon, with the technology providing reliable communication and navigation systems for lunar missions.

Alexa will be used in NASA’s Orion spacecraft and will have access to real-time telemetry data through which it will be able to respond to thousands of mission-specific questions such as “Alexa, how fast is Orion traveling?” The virtual assistant will even process requests to control connected devices on board the Orion, starting with in-cabin lighting.

Using NASA’s Deep Space Network, Alexa can also retrieve all sorts of information from Earth for astronauts in space, whether it’s news briefings or sports scores, helping astronauts stay connected to home.

Artemis I will be an uncrewed mission because of which Amazon had to depend on a virtual crew experience at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. It has been developed jointly with Lockheed Martin and Cisco. The experience will provide remote access to Callisto and simulate interactions between Alexa and future astronauts.

But it’s not just the crew and scientists that will be benefitting from the initiative, as back home, users with Alexa-compatible devices will be able to browse info on the mission. Access to Orion’s telemetry data as well as videos and photos from the mission will be granted.

Amazon will be launching the new Alexa features “closer to the mission”, but a preview is already available now available across Alexa-enabled devices. To access it, all you have say is “Alexa, take me to the Moon.”

Fitbit has announced a pilot scheme with the US space agency that involves the distribution of 1,000 Fitbit smart wearable devices to the staff of the agency including about 150 astronauts. The goal of the program is to establish whether indeed these devices significantly contribute to keeping personnel safe and healthy in the face of the novel coronavirus pandemic.

It is very important that the team who make up the agency are kept safe and healthy, especially mission-critical personnel. The selected crew members will have a Fitbit smart wearable device on them, while a daily check-in app will assist them to record vital data that could indicate potential symptoms of COVID-19, as well as several other health and fitness metrics. The trajectory of these vital daily readings could help to identify a potential coronavirus case and mitigate the impact through isolation and rapid treatment.

The data generated from the device, in addition to data logged by users will help the app to identify minute changes in your body system that could be an early warning sign of COVID-19. Under such circumstances, users will be notified by the app to either isolate or go to work. It can also advise on getting tested to have a definitive status of the virus.

It is expected that the Fitbit pilot program will further enhance safety protocols already put in place to ensure that employees are kept safe and healthy and astronauts are guaranteed as healthy prior to any space mission, so as not to jeopardize the mission.

In the height of the pandemic, smartwatches are increasingly becoming important devices that could help to identify a potential case of Covid-19 even several days before observable symptoms become visible. A recent study using Apple smartwatches revealed an ability to identify a patient who is likely to develop. Fitbit has also done similar work, in collaboration with others and hopes the results from the pilot program will help in fighting and preventing covid-19.

The $14.1 million contract was given to Nokia’s US subsidiary and is a small part of the $370 million total awarded to companies such as SpaceX. The cellular service will allow astronauts, rovers, lunar landers, and habitats to communicate with one another according to Jim Reuter, the Associate Administrator for NASA’s Space.

The 4G network that Nokia will build will be miles superior to the form of communication that was used during the early missions to the moon.

This is not Nokia’s first attempt to launch an LTE network on the moon. It planned to do so in 2018 in collaboration with PTScientists, a German space firm, and Vodafone UK to launch an LTE network at the site of the Apollo 17 landing but the plan never came to fruition.
