Mobile games are now pushing the boundaries of visual fidelity thanks to great improvements in hardware performance. With the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Ray Tracing support was a major part of the announcement with various next-gen games now bringing what initially seemed to be a PC exclusive tech. So here’s a list of 5 new mobile games that support ray tracing.

Arena Breakout Mobile

The first on the list is Arena Breakout, which is a new extraction/tactical shooter that was also released for PCs. It is available on both Android and iOS, boasting impressive visuals thanks to support for ray tracing. For those unaware, this technology makes lighting more realistic and even affects the way shadows interact with the environment and light sources. So you get an immersive experience with more realistic graphics.

CarX Street

For racing game enthusiasts, CarX Street is bringing cutting edge graphics to smartphones. Thanks to ray tracing, you can see finer details of each racing car for a fast paced and immersive experience. The light reflections on the car’s body take the cake here. Racing games usually offer gorgeous graphics and CarX Street continues this trend.

Rainbow Six Mobile

Ubisoft recently released the mobile version of Rainbow Six Siege, which is a popular tactical multiplayer shooter. Rainbow Six Mobile also follows a 5v5 format and Attack vs Defense game modes. To make the shooter even more realistic, you get great visuals thanks to ray tracing support. So there are precise light reflections on weapons and dynamic shadow effects to help raise the excitement of intense CQC gameplay (Close Quarters Combat).

Justice Mobile

Justice Mobile is a next gen MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) that is based on the Chinese fantasy world of wuxia. War Thunder Edge

We have another mobile version of a popular PC game, which is War Thunder. Just like its PC counterpart, the War Thunder Edge lets you sit in the seat of legendary tanks, aeroplanes, warships, and much more. NVIDIA has officially launched the public beta version of RTX Remix, an end-to-end platform built on NVIDIA Omniverse. This platform enables users to modify classic DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 games, providing enhancements like DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) and ray tracing.

Games such as “Call of Duty 2,” and “Garry’s Mod” can now be modified with RTX functions with a single click

The RTX Remix platform includes various tools and features to facilitate the modification process. RTX Remix’s extraction workflow allows users to convert different file formats into the Universal Scene Description (openUSD) format, making it easy to open and edit files in Omniverse-connected apps, including RTX Remix itself.

One notable feature is the ability to replace game models with new high-polygon replacement assets, matching the detail and fidelity of modern games. NVIDIA provides a substantial collection of free high-quality USD materials that users can directly use or import into their mods, enhancing the overall visual experience.

The platform supports a variety of Physically Based Rendering (PBR) material maps, including reflection, metallicity, roughness, self-illumination, normal, subsurface scattering map channels, and height maps with Parallax Occlusion Mapping (POM) technology for realistic textured surfaces.

The use of panoramic ray tracing technology enables the recreation of lighting effects, transforming basic lights into physically accurate dynamic lights that cast high-fidelity ray-traced shadows. This interaction with enhanced textures featuring PBR properties enhances the overall realism of the gaming experience.

For users involved in remastering efforts, RTX Remix provides multiple views, such as Wireframe mode to inspect polygonal details and White Mode to observe lighting in neutral conditions. The platform empowers gamers and modders to reshape and enhance classic games, bringing them closer to the visual standards of contemporary titles.

Realistic Graphics in Real-Time: Samsung Experts Explain Ray Tracing for the Galaxy S23 Series

The Samsung Galaxy S23 series, unveiled on February 1, boasts one of the best and most powerful GPUs, enhancing performance by 41% compared to the previous version and featuring Ray Tracing. This cutting-edge rendering method produces graphic effects in real time by tracing rays of light.

The Galaxy S23 series’ GPU has specialized hardware to accelerate ray tracing simulations, similar to a desktop GPU. This allows for more realistic shadows and light reflections in mobile games. Jungwoo Kim, who managed GPU development for the series, described Ray Tracing as “the ultimate graphic rendering method. Ray Tracing is a complex simulation that traces how the optic nerve of an eye receives a ray of light after being reflected, refracted, or diffracted by an object,” said Kim. “It’s very similar to how light is actually processed.”

Joonyong Park, who managed GPU technical support for the new product, explained that previous rasterization techniques were limited, resulting in awkward and inaccurate expressions. Ray Tracing, on the other hand, simulates the actual effect of how shadows are formed, creating accurate and realistic onscreen graphics.

Since 2010, Samsung has worked to break down barriers between console, desktop, and mobile graphics by expanding the performance and range of its graphics API. By partnering with major industry players, Samsung has standardized its latest technology as the common API, allowing more companies to apply the technology to games and expand their ecosystems.

“In 2016, we standardized the next-generation graphics API called Vulkan released by the Khronos Group and succeeded in commercialization through the Galaxy S7,” said Kim. “But, we’ve been working on advanced GPU development with partners like Epic Games and Unity to optimize the performance of Android games since 2015, before Vulkan was integrated into Galaxy devices.”

With the rising popularity of cross-platform games, Samsung quickly applied desktop GPU technology to their mobile GPU. Park said, “With the rise in consumers demanding that the graphic quality on their mobile devices matches the quality of consoles, we’ve been preparing to offer Ray Tracing technology in mobile game engines since two years ago.”

Samsung is at the forefront of incorporating advanced technologies into their products, and their collaboration with industry leaders like Epic Games and Unity has optimized the performance of Android games. This collaboration paves the way for introducing Ray Tracing technology in mobile game engines. Park emphasized his team’s dedication and proactive efforts in adapting desktop GPU technology for mobile use, ensuring users enjoy a seamless and immersive gaming experience.

The integration of Ray Tracing technology into the Galaxy S23 series is just the beginning. Samsung plans to expand this technology across various mobile devices to enhance the gaming experience. Kim stated, “Our next goal is to find the optimal method to apply Ray Tracing in many mobile devices and provide a great gaming experience to the users.”

As more game developers adopt the new mobile GPU technology, the number of mobile games supporting Ray Tracing is expected to increase. Park mentioned they were “working very hard to apply Ray Tracing technology to more mobile games.”

Last year, Qualcomm made a noteworthy announcement by integrating hardware ray tracing support into its latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. This move was significant as it enabled flagship phone users in 2023 easier access to ray tracing technology.

Fast-forward to February 2023, we’ve got an exciting announcement from OnePlus. The brand is partnering with Perfect World Games to bring ray tracing to the gameplay of Tower of Fantasy on the OnePlus 11 5G.

Ray tracing as a technology has been around for the past few years on PCs and consoles, but it is yet to go mainstream on smartphones. Hardware-accelerated ray tracing technology, like the one inside the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 enables smartphones to deliver realistic graphics while gaming. Given how ray tracing brings dynamic in-game lighting, reflections, and shadows, the gameplay becomes a lot more immersive with significantly better visuals than traditional rendering techniques.

OnePlus Is Working Closely With Perfect World Games To Enable Ray Tracing

OnePlus explains that the two companies have co-developed a Real-time Inline Ray Tracing Pipeline and a novel Fast Temporal Convergence Algorithm for Ambient Occlusion, specifically built for the “Tower of Fantasy”. Further, the implementation utilizes Spatio-temporal Oversampling to improve the quality of the rendering.

“We’re excited to cooperate with OnePlus to apply this advanced technology that previously only be seen on PCs in mobile phones,” said Dan Xu at Perfect World Games. “As a leading game developer, our mission is to bring the best experience to gamers, and ray tracing technology will dramatically transform the in-game experience”. 

The game publisher has developed techniques such as a distance-based dynamic object frame-updating mechanism and range-based ray tracing culling based on light source perspective, enabling players to experience real-time stable frames while enjoying ray tracing effects. It further adds that ray tracing will enhance the immersive experience of open-world scenes in the Tower of Fantasy, like making the effect of flames more realistic from the surroundings and the hot sand underneath.

For example, look at the two images below, one with ray tracing enabled, and one without.

Perfect World Games’ Tower of Fantasy already supports ray tracing on PC, but we couldn’t confirm if the feature was available on its smartphone app for OnePlus 11 5G devices worldwide. That said, OnePlus will be showcasing the Tower of Fantasy gameplay with ray tracing enabled at MWC 2023.

OnePlus also announced that it will be demonstrating an AR concert using a Tower of Fantasy game character at MWC this year. The demo (Lin’s XR Stage Show) will use the OnePlus 11 5G (our review here), which is the first Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Snapdragon Spaces-ready smartphone, to showcase real-time ray tracings effects like specular reflection and shadow on the complex animated model, with interactive elements like hand tracking and plane detection.

Finally, OnePlus will be announcing its new OnePlus Concept 2023 phone at the big tech event tomorrow. More details about the phone will be available soon.

Snapchat is revolutionizing augmented reality with its introduction of ray tracing technology to the AR Lens Studio for developers. Snapchat has been working hard to improve its technology in the shopping Lens creation area, given that 250 million Snapchat users engaged with its AR Shopping Lenses more than 5 billion times in 2022. The introduction of ray tracing technology to its app could also help the company better compete with larger social media companies, such as Instagram and Messenger. Additionally, Snap has recently partnered with Amazon for its augmented reality-powered Virtual Try-On shopping experience, starting with eyewear but with plans to expand into other categories in the months ahead. With these new AR improvements, Lenses featuring AR diamond jewelry, clothing, and much more can now reach ultra-realistic quality, making the shopping experience personal, accessible, and fun for Snapchatters worldwide.

Earlier today (6th January 2023), Vivo announced that it is rolling out support for next gen Ray Tracing technology for its latest flagship series, the Vivo X90, which would offer an improved gaming experience on these devices. So here are all the details.

The Chinese smartphone maker is bringing the support for the Ray Tracing technology on a hardware flagship chip level, thanks to the X90 series featuring MediaTek Dimensity 9200 SoC and Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. For those unaware, Ray Tracing is basically a new lighting and shading tech for games. While games typically employed pre-rendered shadows and lighting in their games, Ray Tracing turns this process into a real time function. Meaning, a light source can dynamically affect the environment around the user.

In simpler terms, this makes games run at a higher graphical fidelity, which improves the overall immersion of the game itself since simulated light sources improves reflections, refraction, and shadow effects. Under the hood, the Vivo X90 and X90 Pro pack the Dimensitu 9200 SoC while the X90 Pro+ variant houses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Both of these chipset support ray tracing tech on smartphones for certain applications.

Meaning, the whole series will be able to offer its users an improved gaming experience. This technology is further supplemented with the inclusing of a chip level optical tracing computing tech that was self developed by the brand. It is called the FALCON graphics engine that is paired with AI algorithms to help offer immersive lighting and shadow effects.

Earlier today, Qualcomm announced its latest and greatest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC during its Snapdragon Summit 2022 conference. In the same event, Oppo also took the stage to announce its new Ray Tracing solution, which will be offered to smartphone powered by the new flagship grade processor. So here are all the details.

The Chinese smartphone maker has already announced ray tracing for smartphones last year, but it was limited to MediaTek Dimensity powered devices. Now, the brand has unveiled its latest ray tracing tech, but this time, it is supported on the latest Snapdragon platform. Previously, we have also seen Samsung debut its Exynos chips with hardware accelerated ray tracing support. Now, Oppo has demoed its latest open ray tracing solution that will allow developers and creators to offer improved ray tracing experiences on smartphones with Qualcomm’s latest chipset.

The company’s new ray tracing technique uses a modified version of its proprietary PhysRay SDK that enables ray tracing “to be applied to complex, large scale game scenes on mobile devices.” Furthermore, Oppo also demoed this technology using a first-person shooter game called “Camp Guard,” that had more than 2000 physical models, 800,000 triangles, and close to 100 textures at Snapdragon Summit 2022. This was an interactive demonstration that showcased the improved shadows, reflections, and lightings thanks to the new technology.

Oppo claimed that the first person game can run at 720p resolution at 60fps for half an hour on a smartphone that is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. The new ray tracing tech was developed by the smartphone maker in partnership with Qualcomm for “driver testing, shader optimization, and compiler tool development over the game scene.” Interestingly, this announcement also arrives a few days after the company unveiled its partnership with Unity, the company behind the popular Unity game engine to offer better gaming performance.

Earlier today, OPPO held its annual developer conference in Shanghai. This year’s event was called OPPO Developers Conference 2021 (ODC21). At the event, the company showcased many new developments. One of the most interesting ones was ray tracing on smartphones.

For years, ray tracing had been exclusive to computers. This feature enables the physical behavior of light in a digital environment to produce life-like content.

Ray tracing made its debut on gaming consoles with the release of Sony PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X/S in late 2020. Now, it is expected to trickle down to mobile devices like smartphones as early as 2021.

Ahead of that, OPPO demoed ray tracing on one of its current-gen OPPO Reno6 series phones at the OPPO Developers Conference 2021. Although the company did not mention the handset used, it appears to be an OPPO Reno6 Pro 5G as the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset present inside the device has support for ray tracing.

OPPO stated that its ray tracing technology is based on Vulkan API and it is part of ColorOS. The firm also revealed that its tech can not only be used in games but also in live wallpapers, image filters, AR applications, and more.

Ray tracing on OPPO smartphones is expected to debut in 2022. The Chinese company will not be the only one to offer this tech next year. Samsung has also confirmed to debut ray tracing-supported new Exynos chipset with AMD mRDNA GPU. The new silicon will likely power the upcoming Galaxy S22 series.
