Reddit, the popular online forum, recently announced a series of updates aimed at enhancing the user experience for its mobile app and website. The changes bring a new “media” tab for easier access to visual content like images and videos, along with a refreshed layout for search results.

Reddit claims an 85% improvement in search speed

The company has taken notable steps to speed up mobile web searches, claiming an 85% improvement in search speed. For users who aren’t logged in, the mobile version of Reddit will now offer additional search filters and separate tabs for comments and posts. This is a welcome change for casual users who prefer not to sign in but want to engage in community discussions.

In an attempt to be more inclusive, Reddit has modified its search feature to be compatible with screen readers. According to the company’s blog post, they’ve added labels, roles, values, and states to all elements in the search results page. The aim is to assist visually impaired users in understanding available actions and the nature of results returned.

However, while these updates appear to be a move in the right direction, they fall short of addressing some long-standing issues, especially concerning accessibility for the visually impaired. Members of the subreddit r/blind have been vocal critics of Reddit’s policies, notably the API crackdown that led to the discontinuation of many third-party accessibility apps. Reddit later exempted some apps focused on accessibility from its API fees, but this hasn’t appeased everyone. Critics argue that the platform still lacks adequate tools for blind users to moderate their own communities.

Reddit, a platform with over 50 million daily active users, has launched a Contributor Program. Now, users in the United States, including moderators, can earn real money for their content and contributions. Monthly payouts are based on the karma and gold received by the user.

Users can click on “Get Verified to Start Earning” on their profile

Here’s how it works: Users can click on “Get Verified to Start Earning” from their Reddit profile to join the program. There are two earning categories: “standard contributors” earn 90 cents per gold, while “top contributors” earn $1 per gold. To qualify as a standard contributor, you need at least 10 gold and a karma score between 100 to 4,999 from the past year. For top contributors, the requirement is 10 gold and over 5,000 karma.

In addition to this, Reddit has updated its gold system. Users can long-press the upvote icon to choose from six different gold awarding options, starting at $1.99 for one gold, all the way up to $49.00 for 25 gold.

This move aligns Reddit with other platforms like Facebook and Instagram, which have similar user monetization tactics. However, the new system might shift user focus towards content that earns gold and karma, possibly affecting the platform’s quality of discussion. By introducing this program, Reddit is changing the way we think about social media engagement and monetization.

Reddit is a vast online platform known as “the front page of the internet,” where users can share, rate, and discuss various types of content, from news articles to personal anecdotes. It’s divided into thousands of communities known as “subreddits”, each focusing on a specific topic. Recently, Reddit hasn’t really been in the good books of its users, considering the API changes occurring in the company. Now, reports are stating that Reddit is conducting an early stage trial for its own version of verification badges, called the “Official” label, to affirm the authenticity of certain brand accounts. The feature, currently limited to a select number of organizations, already in collaboration with Reddit, aims to distinguish genuine profiles with no special privileges or protections attached.

Reddit seems to be transitioning into a platform where advertisers will get priority

The “Official” label, appearing next to the username, is quite similar to the implementation of the present ‘flairs’ feature. However, Reddit has emphasized that this badge does not mean any sort of endorsement or promotion of the labelled accounts. Furthermore, it should not be confused with the “Promoted” label, indicating a paid advertisement on the platform.

This method of manually verifying brand accounts draws a parallel with Twitter’s approach, differing from platforms like Instagram, where users can purchase verification badges. While the plan to extend this program beyond businesses remains uncertain, there’s speculation about a potential shift towards Instagram’s strategy in the future. The trial follows a really harsh time for Reddit. Changes in its API rules stirred discontent among the third-party developers who relied on the Reddit API to create numerous apps integrating with the platform. The move led to widespread protest, resulting in several subreddits either restricting access or shutting down entirely.

To further complicate matters, upon reopening, certain subreddits marked all new posts as NSFW, impeding Reddit’s ability to monetize them. The platform’s introduction of the “Official” label might well be a stepping stone to regaining stability and trust within the community, though this remains to be seen. What do you guys think? Will Reddit bounce back from this? Share your views in the comments below!

Reddit, the popular social site known for a wide range of communities and discussions, has recently stirred up some discontent among its users. The company confirmed reports that it has removed all chats and messages before 2023 as part of a transition to a new chat architecture. While Reddit stated that this move would facilitate a smooth transition, many users were taken by surprise when they discovered their message logs had simply vanished without a trace.

There is still a chance that Users can retrieve conversations before 2023

According to Mashable, there may be a glimmer of hope for those yearning to recover their lost conversations. Reddit allows users to request their account data through an online form, and it’s possible that the archive could contain conversations from before 2023. While retrieving these chats may not be as straightforward as before, there remains a possibility that they are not lost forever. Despite this potential avenue for recovery, users are expressing their dissatisfaction with Reddit’s handling of the situation. The lack of direct notification to community members about the removal of chat history meant that some users were caught off guard, unable to back up their message logs on their own terms.

The unrest among Reddit users is not only limited to the loss of chat history. The platform has been grappling with a lot more backlash recently. Various subreddits staged a blackout to protest new policies that hindered the functionality of third-party apps like Apollo. Additionally, Reddit has announced plans to phase out its existing coin system, which is used to recognize exceptional contributors. The move to retire this system and replace it with something simpler and more direct has raised concerns among long-time users who have grown accustomed to the specific awards and medals associated with Reddit’s unique culture.

Reddit, just like Twitter, is going through a hard time right now. To address these changes and user concerns, the company will have to make some drastic changes in the near future.

Reddit, the popular social media platform, has been confronted with a new challenge as ransomware gang BlackCat, also known as ALPHV, took responsibility for a targeted phishing scheme that occurred earlier this year. The attack exposed internal documents, code, contracts, and sensitive information belonging to some advertisers, as well as current and former employees. Although the compromised data has not been made public yet, BlackCat has announced that it possesses 80GB of compressed data and is demanding a ransom of $4.5 million from Reddit. Additionally, the gang is insisting that Reddit reverses the recent API price increases that have sparked widespread discontent among users.

The responsibility was claimed at a time when Reddit is already in a state of chaos

BlackCat’s scheme involved tricking employees into visiting a website that closely resembled Reddit’s intranet gateway through plausible-sounding prompts. By stealing login credentials and second-factor tokens from an individual who fell for the trick, the hackers gained access to the sensitive information. Fortunately, Reddit has assured users that their personal data has not been compromised during this breach.

The timing of BlackCat’s announcement is significant, coinciding with widespread protests against the API price hikes that have disrupted the Reddit ecosystem. The increased costs associated with the API changes have led to the closure of popular third-party apps such as Narwhal and Apollo. Christian Selig, the creator of Apollo, estimates that it would cost him $20 million annually to continue operating under the new pricing structure. Developers fear that the loss of these third-party apps may result in increased censorship and limited opportunities for growing ad revenue.

In response to the protests, Reddit’s CEO, Steve Hoffman, has stood firm on the API price increases, arguing that users are unhappy because they are no longer receiving services for free. Furthermore, Hoffman has suggested implementing easier methods for removing moderators who make unpopular decisions. While Reddit shows no indication of reversing its decision, some advertisers have paused their activities on the platform in solidarity with the ongoing blackouts.

As Reddit grapples with the situation, it faces mounting pressure from both external threats and disgruntled users. The next moves made by the platform will undoubtedly shape its future and determine the extent of its user base and advertiser support in the coming months.

In a move that has sparked outrage among millions of users, Reddit announced a policy change on May 31, 2023, effectively rendering almost every third-party Reddit app obsolete. Popular apps like Apollo, Reddit is Fun, Narwhal, and BaconReader will no longer be viable options, leaving Reddit’s official mobile app as the sole choice. However, this move by Reddit has been widely criticized for its poor lack of foresight, leading to reduced accessibility for disabled users, and difficulties in moderation.

The 48-hour long shutdowns are being extended to maintain a state of protest

As a response to this policy change, nearly nine thousand subreddits, with a combined reach of hundreds of millions of users, joined forces to express their discontent. These subreddits staged a massive blackout, resulting in extensive media coverage and drawing attention to their concerns, much like an actual protest.

Although Reddit made a small concession by reinstating moderator access to the ‘Pushshift’ data-archiving tool, the core concerns of the protesting subreddits remain unaddressed. Despite the blackout and subsequent media attention, Reddit has remained silent since the protest began. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman hosted an AMA on Reddit to address the concerns of users, however, after a few dissatisfactory replies from the team, users gave up, and the AMA was considered a failed opportunity. He downplayed the impact of the blackout, stating that it had not significantly affected revenue and that many subreddits would likely come back online by Wednesday. However, the protesting subreddits maintain that more substantial action is required to resolve their concerns.

Over 300 subreddits have pledged to remain private or inaccessible indefinitely until Reddit provides a satisfactory solution. Notable subreddits such as r/aww, r/music, r/videos, and r/futurology, with millions of subscribers each, are among those leading this effort. Their dedication and support have become the backbone of the movement, and their collective stand is definitely commendable.

While some subreddits initially planned a 48-hour shutdown, it has become evident that a more extended demonstration is required. Various methods of participation have been suggested, including weekly one-day blackouts, sticky announcements by Automod, or altered subreddit rules to encourage protest-themed participation. Each subreddit has the autonomy to choose the approach that best aligns with its community’s preferences.

The standoff between Reddit and its discontented user base will continue, with the protesting subreddits determined to persist until a satisfactory compromise is reached. It will be interesting to see how this turns out, and if the Reddit team decides to come to a reasonable agreement.

The internet is still feeling the effects of the paid API implementation that was introduced after Twitter was purchased by Elon Musk. Reddit also recently made a similar decision, announcing its new API costs for developers. These changes are having a negative impact on third-party apps. In protest of Reddit’s new API costs, the iPhone subreddit, one of the most popular Apple-related communities on the internet, is going dark indefinitely. This means that the subreddit will be closed to new posts and comments. Here are the details…

Reddit API Costs Lead to iPhone Subreddit Blackout

The iPhone subreddit, one of the most popular Apple-related communities on the internet, is going dark indefinitely in protest of Reddit’s new API costs. The change, which was announced in May, would require third-party developers to pay $20 million per year to continue using Reddit’s API. This has led to the closure of several popular apps, including Apollo.

The mods of the iPhone subreddit announced the decision to go dark in a post on the subreddit. In the post, they explained that they felt the new API costs were “unreasonable” and that they would not be able to continue operating the subreddit under the new terms.

Hi everyone,

We apologise for the back and forth messaging here, but we just wanted to update our community on our intentions to make r/iPhone private (from restricted) in the next 24 hours. This follows on from our most recent announcement made a couple hours ago where we took the subreddit restricted (meaning, the subreddit would still be visible but no new posts would come through). Please read that post too, for the full context on the situation.

This was not an easy decision to make, given a variety of factors, but it’s one we feel comfortable making. Anything that was posted before the restricted mode came into effect earlier today will essentially be the final front page of our community before we privatise the subreddit entirely. In the (somewhat unlikely) scenario that Reddit’s leadership has a change of direction that sees the reversal the recent API policy change, we will reopen the subreddit, but until this happens, r/iPhone will be unavailable for use in any capacity whatsoever. Many other subreddits are doing the same, and we support them for taking a stand.

It remains to be seen how Reddit will respond to the protests. The company has not yet commented on the issue.

Yesterday, Gizmochina posted about a Reddit AMA (Ask me Anything) that was hosted earlier today. Reddit CEO, Steve Huffman participated in the discussion to address the controversy surrounding the company’s recently announced API changes that look similar to Twitter’s API changes introduced only last month. These changes have resulted in several popular third-party Reddit apps announcing their imminent shutdown. While Huffman promised improvements to Reddit’s own app, he remained firm on pricing and other pressing issues, causing further dissatisfaction among the Reddit community. This was sort of expected since the company CEO and others clearly have the power to ignore whatever questions they want.

A clash between Huffman and Selig (Apollo CEO) also came to light during the AMA

Huffman stated that Reddit needs to be a self-sustaining business and can no longer subsidize commercial entities requiring extensive data use. As a result, some apps like Apollo, Reddit is Fun, and Sync have decided to shut down due to the unfavorable pricing structure that doesn’t align with the applications themselves. While Huffman acknowledged some missteps in the API rollout, he very clearly evaded any questions about the company’s relationship with third-party developers, frustrating a lot of redditors.

Numerous developers voiced their frustration online, claiming that Reddit had ignored their attempts to contact the company, despite using the recommended communication channels. Huffman apologized for the oversight and assured developers that the company would respond to their inquiries.

During the AMA, Huffman also accused Christian Selig, the developer of Apollo, of threatening the company. Selig promptly debunked the claim with an audio clip of a phone call with a Reddit representative. Huffman defended the accusation, criticizing Selig’s behavior without providing any form of evidence. The situation further strained the already tense relationship between Reddit and third-party developers.

Huffman did acknowledge the need for improvement in Reddit’s own app, specifically in moderation tools and accessibility features. These areas are frequently cited by Redditors who prefer third-party apps over the native option. Huffman also explained that the restriction on sexually explicit content in third-party apps was due to evolving regulatory and legal concerns.

One significant issue that Huffman did not address was the exorbitant pricing of the API, which developers deemed unaffordable. Additionally, he remained silent on the impending blackout planned by thousands of subreddits in protest of the API changes.

The Reddit AMA concluded with Huffman responding to only 14 questions. All the responses from the Reddit team were heavily downvoted within the AMA thread. This negative reception highlighted the already-apparent dissatisfaction of the community with the company’s handling of the situation.

Do you remember when Reddit announced new API pricing plans some time back, and a lot of third-party Reddit app developers were threatened by the news? It seems that the situation has escalated, since Reddit CEO has agreed to participate in an IamA event, which is essentially an ‘Ask me Anything’ Reddit thread where users can openly ask questions and get answers in real-time. The announcement of the AMA comes in the wake of the decision by two prominent third-party Reddit clients, Apollo and RIF, to shut down their apps due to the new API pricing imposed by Reddit.

Over 3000 subreddits are expected to participate in a Planned Protest

Scheduled for 10:30 AM PT on Friday, June 9th, the AMA is strategically timed just days before a planned mass protest by thousands of Reddit users. These protesters, representing over 3,000 subreddits, including several with massive subscriber bases exceeding one million, have vowed to “go dark” for 48 hours starting June 12th.

Although Reddit’s official post about the upcoming Q&A session does not explicitly mention third-party clients, it is expected that users will heavily focus on this topic in their questions. The company instead emphasized accessibility features and moderation tools, which will also be affected by the API changes, albeit with some concessions already made by Reddit.

Since Reddit is an old platform that hasn’t gone through similar changes in a long, long time, the unrest amongst the user base is quite understandable actually. Many users have relied on these third-party clients for enhanced functionality and user experiences. As the Reddit community braces for the upcoming protests and the potential impact on their favorite apps, the CEO’s AMA presents an opportunity for open dialogue and the addressing of concerns, so that will definitely be interesting. Twitter CEO Elon Musk altered the Twitter API Pricing Plans recently as well, and the reactions were mixed, mostly negative. same Stay tuned to find out what the Reddit CEO has in mind to tackle this problem.

$20 Million would be required to maintain the app in its current form

In response to the growing use of its platform by AI companies for training large language models, Reddit decided to modify its API rules. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman highlighted the value of Reddit’s data corpus and expressed the need to limit free access for major corporations. However, it appears that independent developers will also bear the brunt of these changes, slated to take effect on June 19th.

Christian Selig, the sole developer of Apollo, revealed that complying with the new API policies would require an astronomical sum of $20 million to maintain his app in its current form. Selig’s concerns stem from the high number of API requests Apollo receives. With approximately 7 billion requests made last month alone, the cost estimation presents a daunting challenge.

Apollo, renowned for its exceptional design and functionality beyond Reddit’s native app, faces a precarious situation. Despite offering subscriptions, the app’s existing revenue falls significantly short of covering the impending API costs. Selig notes that the average user generates about 344 API calls per day, necessitating a subscription price increase to at least $2.50 per month. However, this adjustment fails to account for power users who utilize the app at even higher rates or the app’s free users. Consequently, Selig anticipates substantial financial losses each month, even with the existing subscriber base.

While Reddit maintains it provided pricing details per 1,000 API calls rather than a monthly bill, the company has not disclosed specific information. A Reddit spokesperson emphasized that the pricing structure is intended to be fair and equitable based on usage levels. The spokesperson also expressed Reddit’s commitment to supporting third-party developers and their apps, acknowledging their value to the Reddit ecosystem.

Notably, these API pricing changes bear resemblance to Twitter’s API policy changes under Elon Musk. Twitter banned third-party client apps while making its API quite expensive for researchers and businesses reliant on extensive access to Twitter data.

Reddit, one of the world’s largest social media platforms, recently announced updates to its API and developer terms, aimed at supporting a sustainable and healthy ecosystem around Reddit data. This is a crucial move for the platform, as it is home to one of the largest reserves of human-to-human conversations online, spanning the past 18 years. The updates include a new premium access point for third parties, who require higher usage limits and broader usage rights, while the Reddit Data API will still be open for reasonable and appropriate use cases.

The company’s goal is to enable developers to build great products for users and moderators powered by Reddit, and it has seen thousands of applications over the years, including tools that make moderation easier, and utilities that help users stay up to date on their favourite topics. As a platform with an enormous responsibility to its communities, Reddit is committed to being a steward of its content and ensuring that its data is used responsibly.

The updates also include new native moderator tools for Reddit’s iOS and Android apps. These tools will expand moderator capabilities and allow them to give context into a community member’s history within a subreddit, set expectations for community members and visitors, and view filtered versions of mod queue content. In the coming months, Reddit is also planning to prioritize building Mod Mail for native and implementing improvements to core mod action workflows. To align developers’ work with its guiding principles and community values, Reddit has updated its developer terms and made them easier to understand. The new developer terms, called Developer Terms, consolidate and clarify common provisions, rights, and restrictions from separate terms, including Reddit’s license to developers, app review process, use restrictions on developer services, IP rights in its services, disclaimers, limitations of liability, and more.

Reddit’s Massive Information Reserves will be a Gold Mine for the Company at this point

With these updates, Reddit is committed to providing clarity and trust to its users and developers. Starting today, most developers and third parties will be notified via email, and the new terms will take effect following a 60-day notice period. The company’s continued investment in its developer community and the level of its offerings to developers is vital. The updates help clarify how developers can safely and securely use Reddit’s tools and services, including its APIs and its new and improved Developer Platform.

Reddit is a social media platform where users can create communities, or “subreddits,” to share content and engage in discussions about a wide range of topics. Users can submit links, images, and text posts, and other users can upvote or downvote content to determine its popularity. Over time, Reddit has become a significant platform for news, entertainment, and discussion, with subreddits dedicated to everything from niche hobbies to global politics. Millions of users were, however, facing a lot of issues with the platform as it went through an outage yesterday.

These outages can occur due to a variety of reasons, including technical glitches, server maintenance, or even cyber-attacks. When an outage occurs, users are unable to access the platform, post new content, or interact with other users. Social media outages can have significant consequences for individuals, businesses, and organizations that rely on these platforms for communication, marketing, and networking. They can also lead to frustration and anxiety for users who feel disconnected from their online communities.

According to Reddit’s system status page, both desktop and mobile web access was offline, and the native mobile app was having a partial outage. Users were reporting that they cannot access Reddit on either the web or the mobile app. As of 3:12 PM EDT on Tuesday, Reddit was listed as “Investigating,” with a message indicating that they are working to identify the issue. By 3:56 PM, the status was updated to “Identified,” and Reddit reported that they are working to determine a fix for an internal systems issue. DownDetector, a third-party site, has shown a significant increase in reported problems around 2:50 PM.

Reddit has announced a major change to its interface by launching a TikTok-style video feed. Along with that, it will be splitting text and video posts into separate feeds, so video content will appear in a “Watch” feed view while text content will be available in a “Read” feed. Here are the details…

Reddit’s new features include a TikTok-style video feed

The move is aimed at creating a feed that is dedicated solely to video content, which will make it easier for Reddit’s 500 million monthly users to engage in the format they’re most interested in and move between formats more seamlessly. Pali Bhat, Reddit’s chief product officer, said in an interview on Decoder that this change will help users engage with the platform more easily.

New Reddit Feed

By creating separate feeds, Reddit is essentially “videofying” the platform, and this feature is a part of a larger effort to simplify the platform and make it more accessible to users. The company has acknowledged that many people find the platform complex and intimidating, with a complicated interface and distinct community norms and practices.

The new features will include a combination of posts from subreddits that users are subscribed to, along with recommendations. The company will test how users respond to the split views over the next few weeks. Reddit has also indicated that it may experiment with features like video reactions in the future. The company’s efforts to simplify and streamline the platform experience also include improvements to search functionality. In February, Reddit announced that users would be able to search for keywords within posts.

It will be interesting to see how Reddit users react to the new features, and whether it attracts new users to the platform. With video content becoming more and more popular on social media, this move could be a significant step for Reddit in staying relevant in an ever-evolving digital landscape. We’ll have to wait and see how these new features are received by the community.

But the latest report talks about how the smartwatch helped a woman discover her pregnancy even before clinical tests.

This story was shared by a 34 year old woman who shared her story on Reddit. The Redditor claimed that the smart wearable product began alerting her about the increase in heart rate in the past 15 days. The warning message stated that her resting heart rate is about 57, however, it has since risen to 72 in the past couple of weeks. While this jump in heart rate isn’t immediately alarming, she began looking for the reason behind this noticeable change.

She first thought it was due to COVID-19. However, the test came back negative. Following this, she even found an online article that stated that female heartbeats usually increase in the first trimester of pregnancy. Thus, she got a pregnancy test done, which came back positive. So, the woman went to a clinic to get a proper confirmation, with the doctors there also confirming that she was four weeks pregnant.

This came as a surprise since the woman said that she did not experience any pregnancy related symptoms because her pregnancy was still in its early stages. However, the Apple Watch managed to find that her elevated heart rate was being caused by another entity within her body. She credited her smartwatch for the discovery and urged Apple Watch users to pay attention to the heart rate notifications.

Looking at the online post, the Redditor stated that he did unbox the smartwatch but did not turn it on as he didn’t want to get caught. In other words, it is clear that the user is not supposed to have the Pixel Watch, although, we have no idea how he got his hands on the new device. Notably, he also took pictures of the smartwatch with his Pixel 6 smartphone. During the unboxing, he noted that the retail box carries the Pixel Watch, an Active band, and the USB type C magnetic charge case.

Furthermore, the small band fits wrists around 130 to 175mm while the large band is compatible with wrists that measure around 165 and 210mm. The Pixel Watch model that was unboxed was the “Polished Silver Stainless Steel” variant with the “Charcoal Active band.” The box also states that the Pixel Watch supports WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC, and GPS. This new smartwatch will also run on Wear OS 3.5 and sports a 1.18 inch display and is powered by an Exynos 9118 chip.

The tech giant had hinted that it would take the wraps off its Galaxy S9 flagships on February 26.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 details have again got some confirmation from a Reddit user (also called Redditor) who claims to have spent about 20 minutes toying around with the phone. The thread turns out to be a very long and expository “Ask Me Anything” (Reddit AMA) session and is full of first-look impressions about the S9. The Reddit user hinted that indeed the Galaxy S9 is close in design to the S8 but the S9 doesn’t have a thicker side bezel just as seen on leaked renders. The major difference between both models is that this time around the fingerprint sensor is mounted underneath the rear camera and according to the dude, this still made him hit the rear camera a few times while trying to unlock the phone.

Another feature that got confirmed by the Redditor is the dual stereo speakers and a 3.5mm audio jack. One of the speakers would be located at the bottom, while a second one will be at the top, doubling as an earpiece. The sound output from the dual stereo speakers were said to have seen a major improvement compared to the Galaxy S8. Yet another major feature of the Galaxy S9 which could be its biggest selling point, apart from the chipset (Exynos 9810/SD 845) would be the cameras. The rear camera is earlier tipped as coming with variable aperture and the source claims the camera can now do “4k60fps and higher framerates at 720p480 and 1080p240.” Looks like there is no 1000fps slow-mo, but the model which he had access to was the Snapdragon 845 model for the US, and the device in question was not a finalized retail version, so we could still get the slow mo.

Furthermore, the Redditor revealed that one feature that will be heavily promoted after the Galaxy S9 hits the market is the new 3D Emoji which allows users to create an avatar and control its facial features, similar to Apple’s animoji. The guy didn’t disclose the pricing, claiming they aren’t allowed to discuss that but he just mentioned that the freebies that Samsung throws with the Galaxy S9 may take a different dimension compared to previous Galaxy S-series launches in the US.
